Call it a mid-winter funk, but I was just sick of everything. Sick of my clothes, my job, my car, and my lovable but clueless boyfriend of 2 years. I stood there in front of the mirror trying to make my shoulder length mousy brown hair look like anything but plain. I just wanted for my life to shake up a bit. I’m sure a lot of these feelings came from binge watching television about people traveling the world, marrying princes, or getting an extreme makeover. Tyler was a great boyfriend, but his idea of shaking life up is going out to dinner and seeing a movie. I was craving some spice, and I was scared that at 35 years old, my moments of having a wild and crazy life were passing me by. Cutting the pity party short, I finished getting ready for work, kissed Tyler goodbye and started my commute in to the city.

When I got to my office, there were whispers that it was someone’s birthday that day, which meant that cake would be available in the break room. I remember a time where I was once excited about the prospect of getting free cake at work, but not today. Today I was going to sit at my desk, keep my head down, and finish my accounts payable.

“Why so glum chum?” I heard a voice call out to me from the other side of my cubicle.

I looked up to see Veronica, a fellow accountant, and close work-friend of mine. She led just as boring of a life as me, but she still seemed pretty content by it all. She had the most beautiful red hair, but she kept it tightly in a bun just about every day that I’ve known her. Most of the men in the office had a thing for her, but she made it quite clear from day one that she did not sleep with co-workers. So she remained a mystery to the male gender amongst the cubicle jungle.

“Not glum, just blah.” I responded not looking away from my monitor.

“Come on Kat, whats eating you?” She asked with a smile, “Anything I could do to cheer you up?”

“Not unless you have a magic wand that could make my life more exciting overnight.” I said looking up to meet Veronica’s eyes as she playfully hung over the top of the cubicle.

“Well, why don’t we do something fun tonight?” She responded “I have a hair appointment afterwork, but we could go to a dance club afterwards.”

“Gee, watching you get a haircut, and then having strange men grind up against me in a sweaty club?” I said sarcastically, “Going to have to think about that.”

“Come on, I don’t think my haircut will take too long, I’m just getting a trim. Plus, we could make up fake names and just be spontaneous tonight.” Veronica said with a wink, before retreating to her cubicle. “Just think about it and let me know.

The work day dragged on until I got a text from Tyler wanting to know what kind of Chinese food I wanted tonight. After thinking for a moment and tentatively typing in Kung Pow Chicken, I deleted my text and sent him a message informing him of my plans to hang out with Veronica after work. After I hit send, I did feel a bit better. I broke from my normal routine, finally. Watching Veronica getting a trim surely wasn’t going to be the spice I was craving, but the simple act of doing something different did feel liberating.

“I’m in for tonight.” I said peeking around the cubicle wall. “Just don’t take forever at the hair salon. I want to have an adventure tonight.”

“Like I said, I’m just going in for a trim.” Veronica responded back with a smile. “Glad you’re coming along.”

After work we jumped into Veronica’s car and drove to the other side of the city to a Salon called “The Razor’s Edge.” I had never noticed the salon before, but Veronica said that it has been there for a long time. We walked in to a brightly lit and welcoming salon. From the looks of it, there were four stylist stations and a receptionist desk. Only one stylist was present at the moment, sitting in her chair and looking at her smart phone.

“I’m here for my 5:30 appointment” Veronica told the receptionist.

“Finally decided to take the leap V?” The receptionist responded, “And I see you brought a guest.”

“Yep, it is about time.” Veronica said as she touched her bun. “This is my friend from work Kat. We’re going to go to the club after my trim.”

“Welcome to the salon Kat.” The receptionist looked at me. “My name is Jennifer and I handle the scheduling and management of Razor’s Edge. If you need anything at all, just ask.”

Veronica was ushered back to her stylist’s station and I was seated in the waiting area close by.

“So, is today the day Veronica?” Her stylist asked as she took her hair down from the bun.

“I’ve thought about it a lot, and I know that this is as good of a time as any, so let’s do it.” Veronica responded with resolve.

This seemed like a very serious conversation for a trim. I figured she was just nervous about cutting and wanted me here for emotional support. With her hair out of the bun, it was easily lower back length. Veronica looked back at me and smiled, looking for encouragement. I looked back and gave her a thumbs up before retreating my gaze to my phone as I checked my email. All of a sudden my attention was drawn to the very chair where Veronica was seated when I heard a loud popping sound. I looked up to see Veronica’s stylist holding a pair of bright red clippers poised at Veronica’s forehead hairline.

“Last chance to save your hair V.” Her stylist stated. “There’s no turning back once I start. These will take you down to the skin.”

Veronica looked at me once more and said, “Do it.”

Her stylist plunged the clippers into the hairline, leaving a patch of white scalp in its wake. Strip by strip, Veronica’s gorgeous red hair was being removed. I couldn’t stop staring. Why was she doing this to herself? What was she thinking? What will she look like with no hair? In the blink of an eye, the stylist made the final pass of the clippers, severing the last red locks from Veronica’s head.

“Want me to take it the rest of the way.” The stylist asked as she ran her hands over my friends head. “The balding clippers to a good job of getting it as close as possible, but nothing beats a razor shave.”

“As long as it doesn’t take too long.” Veronica said looking at me with a smile. “I promised my friend that my trim would be quick so that we could go to the club afterwards.”

“I’ll be quick. I promise” The stylist responded as she lathered Veronica’s head.

I was stunned by the whole process. I don’t think I took my eyes off of Veronica the entire time. All of a sudden I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see Jennifer holding a cup of coffee.

“I think you could use something to drink.” Jennifer said as she handed the cup to me. “By your stunned expression, I’m guessing V didn’t tell you much about our salon.

“Not really” I said taking a sip of coffee. “She said she was getting a trim.”

“We specialize in transforming women into beautiful bald women.” Jennifer said with a smile.

“So all of your clients get their heads shaved?” I asked in disbelief.

“Usually they come to us as curious or wanting a radical change, but yes, our clients tend to leave here bald and beautiful.” Jennifer responded. “V has been coming here for a month or two now. She was very curious at first, and watched several transformations before decided to take the leap.

“So why aren’t you and the stylists bald?” I asked as I watched intently as Veronica’s stylist dragged a razor over her scalp. She looked like she was in ecstasy.

“We are.” Jennifer retorted. I looked up to see Jennifer holding a blonde wig on her index finger. “We all wear wigs. We found that it was less of a shock to new customers.”

I couldn’t take my eyes off of Veronica as her stylist scraped the last remaining remnants of hair from her head. Even the shock of the receptionist removing a wig in front of me was paled by watching my friend being shaved bald.

“She looks amazing.” I finally said, as the stylist washed the remaining shaving cream from Veronica’s head.

“She sure does. All of that red hair was weighing her down.” Jennifer said taking a seat next to me. “She’s always been a bald girl, she just didn’t know it until today.”

Veronica’s stylist ran a finger over Veronica’s scalp looking for missed spots. Pleased with the result, she uncapped Veronica and gave her a hug. “Welcome to the club.”

Veronica stood up and stepped over the mound of red hair on the floor that was once connected to her head.

“Sorry my trim too longer than expected.” She said with a smirk. “You ready to go to the club and have some fun?

“Um, I guess” I stammered. “Aren’t you afraid of what people will say?”

“Honestly, no. I feel amazing and I want to show the world.” Veronica responded. “Let me settle up my bill, and we’ll get going.”

I stood up, and my legs felt like jelly as I walked behind my now bald friend. Her head looked perfectly smooth, like she had never had a single hair before. She looked gorgeous.

“I think your friend had a stroke during your haircut V.” Jennifer said as she swiped her credit card. “I can’t tell if she’s interested or disgusted.”

“She was saying she wanted some excitement in her life, so I figured I’d invite her along for my transformation.” Veronica responded to Jennifer while looking at me. “You can touch it if you want.”

Instinctively I reach up and ran my hand over Veronica’s barren scalp. “If feels as smooth as it looks.” I said

“It feels even better as Julie shaves it. I was in heaven during the whole process.” Veronica responded. “I should have done it months ago.”

“We’re all set here V.” Jennifer said handing back her credit card and an appointment slip. “We’ll see you back here next week.”

“Thanks so much Jennifer!” Veronica responded “I’ll see you then.”

Jennifer held out a hand for me to shake. “It was nice meeting you Kat.” As I pulled back my hand, I noticed that Jennifer had subtlety snuck an appointment slip into my palm. “You can keep it or not, but I can tell from the way you were watching your friend, you’re ready for a change.”

With that, we walked to Veronica’s car and drove to the club. The next few hours were a blur of drinking, dancing, and staring at Veronica’s head. Every man on the dance floor was all over Veronica. There was something so mysterious about this beautiful bald women dancing seductively on the floor. By the time we left, Veronica had 10 phone numbers of men much younger than her. The only number I had in my pocket was given to me by Jennifer at the salon. As we drove back to the office to get my car I turned the appointment slip over in my hand. The date on the slip was for next Friday at 6:00.

“What are you thinking Kat?” Veronica asked me pulling into our parking garage. “You seem to be lost in thought.”

“Nothing really.” I replied “Just digesting all of the events from tonight to try and make sense of it.”

“I should have told you what I was planning, but I was afraid you would think I was insane and try and talk me out of it.” Veronica replied. “Plus I figured this was the kind of excitement you would like to be a part of.”

“You look great Veronica,” I said, “but you’re, right. I probably would have tried to talk you out of it.”

“So do you think I made the right choice?” She asked as she pulled up along side of my car.

“You really do look beautiful bald.” I replied. “I’m totally jealous. I wish I was as brave as you.”

“Well by the way you’re turning that appointment slip over in your hands, I have a feeling you’re contemplating keeping the appointment.” Veronica said with a smile. “I know you would look fantastic with just a trim.”

“I’m thinking” I said smiling back. “But how would Tyler react? And what about work? Everyone in the office would have a field day with this.”

“Oh I’m not too worried about the office. I plan on wearing a wig for the first little bit until I feel comfortable telling everyone.” Veronica replied reassuringly. “As for your boyfriend, he should support you in everything that you do, or it’s time for someone new.”

“Goodnight Veronica.” I said getting out of her car. “You’ve definitely spiced up my mundane life tonight.”

“You’re welcome Kat. Stay safe on the way home and I’ll see you Monday.” Veronica replied. “Hold on to that appointment slip though and think about it.

My drive home was filled with images of Veronica’s head being shaved. I kept imaging myself taking her spot as Julie ran the clippers over her head. By the time I pulled into my driveway, I was ready to drive back to the city and have my head shaved right then and there. I slipped my appointment card into my purse and walked into my house. Tyler had already gone to bed so I decided to take a shower. As I reached up to wash my hair I was disappointed to not feel the smooth scalp that Veronica had received tonight. Instead my hands met a soggy mess of hair as I lathered up. I kept thinking about everything Veronica must have experienced tonight. After I got out of the shower, I stood in front of the mirror, pulling my hair as tight to my head as possible. I was trying to imagine what I would look like bald. Could I pull off the look as well as Veronica did? What would Tyler think about dating a bald woman? Is this the kind of excitement I was craving?

I decided to table the thought until the morning as I crawled in to bed.

In the morning I woke up to the smell of breakfast. Tyler had gotten up early and cooked.

“How was your night on the town with Veronica?” Tyler asked as he plated up the eggs.

“It was interesting.” I replied with a smirk. “I had to wait for her to get a trim at a salon before we went dancing.”

“That’s nice” Tyler responded.

“Yep. I may go next week for a trim as well.” I said as the memories of last night filled my head. “They made me an appointment for Friday.”

“That’s nice” Tyler replied. “Just a trim?”

“Yep. Just a trim.”

To be Continued.
