ShorngirlParticipantLately, I’ve been seeing an uptick in the number of people using this site as a vehicle for profit. I’ve always considered this place a free haven for those who enjoy hair fetishism in all its varied forms, donations to the moderators aside. The idea of posting the second half of a story on this site to coerce a reader to join a Patreon or read the rest on Amazon seems to run contrary to the intentions of the site. Now, I’m all for writers making money, it’s how I make my living, but I keep it well away from here. I welcome the opinion of others.

ParticipantIt’s not against the stated rules of the site. 🤷♀️

ModeratorAnything you feel is inappropriate, please, go ahead and report it in the report a story forum, and feel free to email HSNadmin and/or me.
I suspect I know the current issue you are talking about, and I have been playing whack-a-mole all weekend. I’m not ignoring it, it’s just that there are only two of us, and this isn’t our full time jobs for either of us. I had several other obligations this weekend.

KeymasterHi, just an update to say that I’m looking at this, it’s not being ignored.
The “rules” of the site were very loosely defined when I started it and maybe something more robust needs to be put together.
This site relies on talented people posting their work and I’m not 100% against people using the site to promote something. However as ever there’s a grey area that’s hard to define in terms of what’s acceptable. If something makes this site less fun to use for the majority then that’s the tipping point.

ParticipantI’m torn about it — I don’t mind a short plug of a patreon at the end of a story, and if someone wants to put continuations behind a paywall, that’s their call. But if the first thing I see is a suggestion I go read something else I have to pay for first? That just make it most likely that I’ll go back to the main page and read something else.
And then seeing multiple versions of that tact in short order just makes me even less likely to open the author’s future stories at all. At that point, their stuff basically becomes spam.
The one thing I really don’t like? How an author name can link to a patreon site instead of the list of stories they submitted here. That, to me, is what really makes the submission look like nothing more than an advertisement.

ParticipantFor me, posting a story, and giving a patreon (or whatever) link at the end seesm fine. Putting the link *before* the story seems a bit in-your-face and irritataing, but I don’t really have a problem with it.
Posting *half* a story and saying ‘come read the other half, but you have to pay’ feels to me like exploiting this site.
I realise that this isn’t as hard and fast as it might be, there’s a slightly blurry line between what’s the second half of a story, and what’s a follow up / separate story, but I guess Admin(/mods) would just have to make that call.
As for the author name linking off the site, that is (I think) just how wordpress works – if you go to set up your wordpress profile, then there’s a box for your website address. If you fill that in, then it links your name to that web address instead of the story list here. (At least, that’s what I think – I did it accidentally a long time ago!)
I don’t particularly like that behaviour either, and it may be that HSN can change it.

InactiveHeh, it seems I became one but not the first reason of this discussion. So I feel I also must left some comment on this.
First of all I want to say that external links don`t contradict to site rules. Second thing to mention is that patreon in any way is not (and it actually can not be) the main source of profit. I post not only haircut stories, but illustrations and haircut videos as well.
Now to the probably main part^: I posted few stories without introduction, they were given exclusively on my patreon page. The problem is that most introductions were not a full value stories. In some actually there may be no haircut at all. Parts2 can be read as single proper stories; introduction just allows to better see the character, etc. That doesnt differ from storys illustrations.
That would have been crazy to post here only part with no or little haircut. P.s.(I have not much stories with lots of parts, but some sequels are okay)
And some stories, I agree, is only patreon exclusive, but I think that is the choice of the author. Every one want to say “thank you” to people who support them, and getting more content, as for me, is the best way for that.As for some formats, I have read your opinions and suggestions, and for sure I will take all into account.
P.s.s.: (Don`t forget to inspect my works on HairStoryNetwork, flickr and patreon ahahah 🙂 )

ParticipantSome of the stories in question (“Eliza’s Haircut” and “The Edgy Barbershop”) were written by HaircutStories on DeviantArt circa 2019 (and are still on his page), and have subsequently been posted here by “JennyMiller” (with the accompanying Patreon link) and to a very recent DeviantArt profile JennyMiller13. So I suspect this is not only an instance of trying to monetize via this site, but also plagiarizing someone else’s work.

Apologies for not posting the links in the first message–I had some trouble in the past getting forum posts with links to actually post. Hopefully this works.

ShorngirlParticipantHaving opened this proverbial can of worms, I felt it my responsibility to chime in, now that more voices have been heard. I agree with most opinions here, that posting a story, and detracting from that posting by prefacing it with an advertisement to go elsewhere to read the other half, or a prequal to what was posted, is a bit in your face. It may not break any rules, but it flies in the face of the spirit of this site. Posting a link at the end of a story, saying, ‘if you want to read more, go here’, seems just fine to me. I’m not against people making a little scratch with their writing, it is , after all, my profession.
I am sad that anyone needed to be banned, as that was never my intention. Freedom of expression is a wonderful thing, and this site provides a unique opportunity to explore this subject without any real impingement or censorship. If you are smart about how you place your links, so that it doesn’t detract from what you made available here, I can’t imagine that would be an issue.
I am not a moderator here, so I don’t make the rules. Abide by whatever is in them, and carry on posting. I write because I am compelled to do so, just as an artist paints, or a musician plays. If this is how you feel, then there is room to keep your professional and avocational works separate. Above all, have fun with what you do. It will show in your creations.
All the best,
