It was a windy, but warm morning in Mooresville, North Carolina. 14 year old Mariana was getting ready for school in a few days, so she needed to be sure everything was set.
Mariana knew that everything was ready, but couldn’t shake the feeling of something that she was missing. She passed her mirror and noticed what she needed: a haircut! Mariana’s hair was dragging along her wooden floor. Her 3A curly hair needed to be taken care of, but since she was worrying so much lately, she didn’t have time.
Later that day, she decided to call the salon that was half a mile away to schedule her appointment. To her surprise, her usual stylist had to be let go, due to complaints from various customers. Mariana asked if anyone else could take her, only to hear that the salon was completely booked for days.
The next day, she combed her hair and styled it into two long braids, before going for a walk. On the way home, she saw a spinning pole with red and white stripes next to a neon sign. The sign said “Tom and Vinnie’s Unisex Barbershop”. When Mariana read the sign, she touched her long braids and thought of trying something new.
She entered the barbershop. It was an old-school, three-chair barbershop. The ceiling and walls were white, with the floor in checkerboard black-and-white tiles. The seating area was a couple of black sofas. However, what scared Mariana was the barber chairs. While the salon chairs were smaller, less bulky and made of leather and metal, the barber chairs were much different. The chairs were bigger, had a linoleum exterior and leather padding, as well as a headrest. The barber’s station was different with a wash basin in front of the chair. There were many barbering tools on the top of the station.
She sat down and noticed two barbers with no barber in the third chair. The first barber has in his early-to-mid 60s with glasses, crewcut hair, and wore an old barbers uniform with a name tag that said “William. The second barber was in his early 30s and had a Short Back-and-Sides haircut. He had the same uniform on, but had a different name tag that said “Johnny” . As bth were cutting the hair of two businessman. The third barber came out, to Mariana’s surprise, was a woman! She noticed that the female looked to be at least 19 or 20 years old with a Bob and a Shaved Nape, as well as wearing a name tag that said “Jessica”.
Mariana heard Jessica ask if she’s next to which she entered the chair. Mariana’s braids dangled over the back of the chair, as she was capped. She felt Jessica’s slender, but strong fingers unbraid her hair and gasped at it. Mariana wanted her hair to be manageable for school. Jessica nodded and showed her some pictures of “manageable haircuts”. Mariana selected the Pixie, which Jessica pinned up the Top of her hair and took the clippers with the #8 guard on them, as well as a large comb.
Mariana’s hands clenched the chairs’ armrests and closed her eyes, when Jessica started to use the clippers on her left side. She never had clippers used on her before, which felt weird to her. Before long, the back of her head was exposed, as well as her right side. Mariana took the #8 guard off the clippers and put on the #6 to even it out. Long strands and short clumps of dark-brown hair piled on the cape and floor. Jessica then started to fade Mariana’s hair.
After the Back and Sides were done, Jessica unclipped the Top of Mariana’s hair and took off the #6 guard to use the “Clipper-over-Comb” method. Large pieces of Mariana’s hair were on her capped lap or on the floor. Jessica then switched to scissors and used the “Scissors-over-Comb” method on Top to nearly an Inch and a Half. Jessica then did the same for the fade. Jessica then took out a straight razor and shaving cream for the nape. After finishing the nape, Jessica showed Mariana her new haircut, as well as the Back.
Mariana looked in silence for a few seconds, thinking that it would’ve been much shorter. However, it looked good on her and thanked Jessica. She paid Jessica and then walked out of the barbershop, unable to stop touching her new hair.
