Mumbai’s blistering heat is at its peak, In a typical middle-class house, Anika (18) and her brother Rohit (20) are stuck in the thick of it. Anika, drenched in sweat, nervously glances at the mirror. Her thick, long hair clings to her neck, making her feel even hotter. “Yaar, this heat is killing me! I wish I could just get rid of all this hair,” she says, but deep inside, she knows her conservative parents would never approve of such an idea. In their traditional mindset, women’s long hair is sacred, a sign of beauty and respect. Short hair is something only men can have.
The oppressive heat becomes unbearable, and Anika begins feeling desperate. Her long hair, once a pride, has become a burden. She wishes for a solution but is trapped by her family’s rigid views. Rohit, ever the problem-solver, notices his sister’s frustration and hatches a plan. Rohit knows well that their parents, especially their mother, Suja, would never let Anika get a head shave, no matter how much she pleaded. But Rohit knows he needs to get creative if he wants to help Anika.
“I have a plan,” Rohit tells Anika, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “We’ll make it look like you need a head shave for a medical reason. It’ll seem like a necessity, and they’ll have no choice but to agree.” Anika raises an eyebrow. “But how?” Rohit carefully crafted a fake prescription, selecting some scalp condition that sounded serious but not alarming. He printed it on a doctored letterhead, adding a fake doctor’s signature and a firm recommendation: “complete head shave for scalp healing or else it may worsen the infection ”
That evening, he placed the paper in front of their parents. “Mom, Dad, Anika has a scalp issue. The doctor says she needs to shave her head.” Vikas barely glanced at it. “Nonsense. Girls don’t shave their heads for this. Just use oil.” Suja nodded. “Yes, neem water and thrice-a-week washes will fix it.” Anika looked at Rohit, unsure. He simply smirked. “If they won’t take this seriously, I’ll make sure they do.”. Rohit smirks and pulls out a bottle of hair fall solution he bought from a local shop.
“This will make your hair thinner over the next few days. It’ll make it look like you have some scalp issue, and they’ll think you need to shave it to fix it.” Anika, though hesitant… Rohit reassures her, “Trust me, it will be safe and will work perfectly” . Over the next few days, Anika starts applying the hair fall solution ever night. Initially, nothing seems to happen, but by the third day, she notices strands of hair falling when she brushes it. The anxiety creeps in, but Rohit remains confident.
As days pass, Anika’s thick hair starts to thin. Her once voluminous hairline begins receding slightly, making her forehead more prominent. “I look so strange,” she thinks, staring at her reflection. Yet, she keeps applying the solution. Rohit, too, grows more confidence .Each morning, Suja’s heart sank as she combed Anika’s hair, watching clumps detach effortlessly. One evening, Vikas paused mid-sentence as Anika walked past. His eyes widened—her hairline had noticeably receded, exposing a broader forehead.
Suja gasped, fingers trembling as she touched Anika’s scalp. “Beta… your hair…” she whispered, panic creeping into her voice. Vikas, for the first time, looked genuinely worried. “This… this isn’t normal,”. The realization hit—this wasn’t something oil or neem water could fix. Anika looked at her father with pleading eyes, her hands gripping her thinning hair. The sight shook Vikas. Reluctant, he finally said, “If this is the only way… then fine.” The decision was made that Anika was getting her head shaved the next day.

The salon was tucked away in a quiet lane in their neighborhood, As rohit explains the matter he starts by cutting Anika’s long hair with scissors, reducing it to a manageable length. Anika watches the long strands fall to the floor, feeling an odd sense of relief. The heat is already starting to feel better on her bare neck. Once the scissors work is done, the stylist switches to clippers, buzzing the remaining hair down. Anika’s heart races as the clippers make a loud, buzzing sound, signaling the gradual disappearance of her thick hair. She can’t help but notice how much cooler it feels.
“This might be the best decision I’ve made in weeks,” Anika thinks. Rohit stands close by, giving the stylist the signal for the final step. The stylist applied foam to her scalp, preparing it for the straight razor shave. Anika’s scalp is now bare, and she feels a strange mix of freedom and vulnerability as the razor glides smoothly over her skin. The stylist works quickly and efficiently, removing the last bits of hair. As Anika stepped into the house, the soft glow of the evening light reflected off her freshly shaven scalp.
Suja, rushed forward and placed her trembling hands on Anika’s head. “My poor girl,” she whispered, gently stroking the smooth surface. “We’ll take care of you. We’ll fix this.” After that incident Suja became obsessively attentive to her daughter’s scalp. Every morning and evening, she gently massaged herbal oils and cooling balms onto Anika’s smooth head, hoping to restore her lost hair. At times, vikas would sit beside Anika, reassuring her, “Don’t worry, beta. It’s just a matter of time, your thick hair will be back.” Unaware of the secret Rohit and Anika were keeping.
Rohit handed anika the hair removal oil again. “Apply it for a few more days. That way, the slow regrowth will seem natural.” Anika hesitated but nodded as she knew Rohit’s plan had worked so far, and this was necessary to keep up the illusion. As she continued using the solution, her scalp remained bare, further convincing their parents that the hair loss was more severe than they had imagined. As the weeks pass, Anika’s scalp begins to show slight hair growth.
Anika had enjoyed the freedom from the heat and the pressure of long hair. Hnow, this victory gives her a new idea. “Rohit,” Anika says one evening, “we did this for me, but now it’s Mom’s turn. She needs to feel what it’s like to have short hair too.” Rohit looks at her, intrigued. “You want Mom to shave her head too?” he asks, slightly surprised. Anika nods, a determined look in her eyes. “Yes. She needs to understand what it’s like to break free from the stereotypes of long hair. We’ll do it just like we did with me.”
Rohit grins, knowing that his sister’s plan for the future will be just as bold as the one they executed together. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in their family’s journey—a journey where Anika and Rohit are ready to challenge traditions, one step at a time.
