By the third year of Navratri, Meera was no longer the only bald woman in the temple courtyard.
At first, she had drawn curious eyes — a lone mother, coming again and again with her scalp gleaming, sandalwood paste cooling her skin. Some whispered she had gone mad, others that she was cursed. But when people saw her confidence, her peace, and the blessings that seemed to follow her family, the whispers slowly changed.
One evening, as the drums echoed through the village, Radha, a young widow, came to Meera in secret.
“Your head is always shining, sister,” she said shyly. “I, too, want to feel that freedom. Will you sit with me if I take the razor?”
Meera agreed. The following dawn, Radha sat on the temple steps while the priest’s hand guided the blade over her oiled hair. Locks fell around her like black clouds until her head was bare, glowing under the rising sun. Radha touched it with trembling fingers, and tears of relief streamed down her face.
The next Navratri, two more women joined them. Then five. By the fifth year, an entire row of women sat in the courtyard, one after another offering their hair, their heads gleaming smooth in the lamp glow. Some were mothers, some widows, some young girls making vows.
Together they formed a circle, their shaven scalps shining with sandalwood and turmeric paste. The villagers, once skeptical, now bowed to them with respect — seeing not shame but strength, not loss but devotion.
Meera, sitting at the center, felt her heart swell. She had started with a vow to save her daughter. Now, she realized, her choice had given birth to a new sisterhood — women unafraid to surrender, unafraid to shine.
That night, as conch shells blew and the temple bells rang, the Goddess seemed to gaze down upon them with pride.
