First Barbershop Straight Razor Head Shave

Last night, I was lying in my hotel bed thinking about the partying I’d been doing that night. I’d gotten to spend some time with friends I don’t get to see often, and we’d had a great time. Unfortunately, the plans I had for the next day had fallen through, which left me with an open day—or, more accurately, an open morning before I had to travel back home that afternoon.

So I started trying to figure out how to fill the time.

Maybe I’d find a restaurant. Maybe I’d go shopping. I wasn’t really sure.

Then I started thinking about getting a haircut. My hair had gotten pretty long for me, and my beard was getting pretty unruly. I thought, You know what? This would actually be a pretty good time to go to a proper barber and get all of this taken care of.

And then I remembered a barber shop I’d seen on social media.

I remembered seeing this particular barber doing straight-razor head shaves. I was a little different in how I kept my hair. I never liked having long hair, even though I wasn’t balding and had a pretty thick head of hair. I just liked how it looked buzzed or even shaved.

So I found the social media account again, tracked down the barber’s website, and that’s when I discovered I could actually book an appointment online.

That was pretty exciting.

I was maybe a little drunk at this point, which probably contributed to how enthusiastic I was about the whole idea, but I went ahead and booked it. I was finally going to see what it was like to experience a barbershop head shave. Since it’s a straightforward haircut, I normally take care of it myself. But I wanted some pampering on this trip, and this was it.

Head shave. Beard trim. Scalp massage.

I picked the earliest appointment time, hit the button, and that was that.

Appointment booked.

So, with the appointment made, I went to sleep.

The next morning, I woke up, checked out of the hotel, and made sure I had everything packed up. I filled up my pickup with gas, found a good restaurant that served breakfast, and had an excellent breakfast before heading across town to the barber shop.

I got there a little early, so I sat in the parking lot for a while, messing around on my phone and waiting for the appointment time to get closer.

About ten minutes before the appointment, I finally walked into the shop.

The barber was already there, working on a client in her chair. I took a seat and waited my turn.

She seemed a little surprised when she realized I was her next appointment. I had a full, thick head of hair, so I didn’t look like someone who typically books a head shave.

She looked at me and said, “You’re my head shave, aren’t you?”

I said, “Yep, that’s right.”

She paused for a second.

“Okay. Not what I was expecting, but it doesn’t matter to me.”

Then she turned back toward the guy in her chair and said, “Yeah, that guy booked a head shave.”

He looked over at me.

“Oh, wow.”

And I just sat there, waiting for my turn.

A moment later, she looked back at me and said, “Man, you got my juices flowing, thinking about shaving all that hair off.”

That made me laugh, and it also made me a little nervous.

Definitely no backing out now.

While I was still waiting, she asked me if I’d ever shaved my head before.

I told her, “Yeah. I usually just shave it myself in the shower.”

So I wasn’t a stranger to having a shaved head.

Then she asked if I’d ever had a straight-razor head shave before.

“Nope.”

That was the new experience for me.

And I think that probably explained some of the curiosity I’d noticed from her when I first walked in. I had a full, thick head of hair, and I think she was wondering whether I actually understood what I had signed up for.

As I sat there waiting, I also couldn’t help but notice the way she talked about shaving my head.

She was still working on the client in her chair, giving him some sort of taper, and the conversation had steered toward her straight-razor head shaves. She explained that they take a little bit longer, but that she could get someone’s head “baby-butt smooth,” and that her clients really liked that.

She was surprisingly descriptive about the whole process.

And then she made it clear that shaving someone’s head was actually her favorite haircut to do.

That caught my attention.

There was something exciting about realizing that the person who was about to shave my head wasn’t just someone who happened to offer the service. She genuinely enjoyed doing it. She was enthusiastic about it, she clearly took pride in getting a head perfectly smooth, and she seemed very excited about the prospect of getting started.

So as I sat there waiting for my turn, I found myself getting more and more excited about it.

I’d gone in expecting a haircut.

Now I was sitting in a barber shop listening to a barber talk enthusiastically about how much she loved shaving heads, knowing that in just a few minutes, my full head of hair was going to be coming off.

Eventually, she finished with her current client. She kept me in the waiting chair while she cleaned up her station, and then she finally invited me up into the chair.

“Okay,” she said. “I’m going to lather you up and put a hot towel on you and the steamer on you. While that gets you loosened up, I’m going to go to the bathroom, come back, and then we’ll get started.”

“Okay,” I said.

There was no “Are you sure?” or “We could buzz it down first.”

As soon as I hit the chair, I was going to be shaved as smooth as she could get it.

She started working the lather into my hair, and she worked it in very, very thoroughly. What surprised me was that she didn’t use clippers first.

I had assumed she would buzz all the hair down before getting out the straight razor, but she left my hair at its full length and went straight into the lather.

It took quite a bit of it, too. I had a lot of hair at this time.

Once she had worked the lather completely through it, she wrapped my head in a hot towel and turned on the steamer.

Then she stepped away to use the bathroom.

So there I sat.

Wrapped in a hot towel, steam rolling over me, just relaxing in the barber chair.

She came back after a few minutes, took the towel off, turned the steamer off, and came back with even more lather. She worked it thoroughly over my head again.

Then she said, “We’re going to start with chroming the dome, get the dome nice and shiny and smooth. Then we’ll do the beard, and then the massage.”

“Sounds good to me.”

There it was again—the descriptive language.

“Chroming the dome.”

“Get the dome nice and smooth.”

It was funny to me because you could tell she genuinely enjoyed this. Shaving heads clearly wasn’t just another service on her menu. This was something she liked doing.

She put another layer of lather over my head, picked up the straight razor, and started.

And I remember thinking, Okay. Here we go.

There wasn’t any big dramatic moment. She just put the razor to my head and started working.

I could feel a gentle tug as she pulled the razor through my hair. Since I still had all of my hair at full length, there was quite a bit for the razor to take off. The hair would stick to the razor, and she’d simply wipe it off and keep going.

There wasn’t hair flying everywhere or piling up on the cape. It was almost strangely clean. She just kept working methodically around my head.

The first pass took a little while. It wasn’t a quick buzz-and-shave kind of thing. She was taking her time and working through the bulk of my hair.

Once she’d gotten most of it off, she re-lathered my head and started a second pass.

This time, I could tell the razor was moving much more easily. There was still that faint tugging sensation, but it was becoming less and less noticeable. What stood out more was the sound—the scratch of the straight razor moving across my scalp.

She was also extremely thorough.

She’d shave an area, move on, then feel over it with her hand to check for anything she’d missed. If she found a rough spot or a stray patch of hair, she’d go back over it.

She kept working her way around my head like that.

Pass after pass.

She got into a good rhythm, and I eventually closed my eyes and just relaxed. She would tilt my head where she needed it and keep going over it from multiple angles and passes.

I think she went over my entire head about three times, making sure she got everything. There was no rushing through it. She was checking her work constantly, feeling for missed hairs and making sure the whole thing was completely smooth.

By the end, there was barely any tugging or scratching sound at all.

Finally, she finished the shave and put a cool towel over my head. She wiped everything down and massaged in a balm. My head had a slick feeling as she massaged it in.

Then she spun the chair around toward the mirror.

“There you go. Your head is shaved.”

And boy, was it.

I looked at myself in the mirror and immediately noticed how much the lights were reflecting off my head.

It was shiny.

Really shiny.

And honestly, it looked good.

Very good.

I could see her relax a little, too.

I think when I first walked into the shop and sat down in the waiting chair, there was a part of her that was wondering whether I really knew what I was getting myself into. But now she was looking at the finished product, and you could tell she was pleased.

Then she moved on to my beard.

“What would you like done with your beard?”

I told her, “I just generally want it trimmed up. I don’t want a lot of length taken off. I just want it cleaned up, lined up, and, you know, do your thing.”

“Okay, perfect.”

And that’s exactly what she did.

She trimmed it up without taking much length off, cleaned up the mustache so it wasn’t hanging over my lips, and then got out the straight razor again.

She cleaned up my neck, sharpened up the cheek lines, and cleaned everything up around the edges. She also faded my sideburns into the shaved head so the transition from beard to bare scalp looked natural.

It was a pretty simple beard trim, but she did an excellent job with it.

And at the end, she even trimmed my eyebrows. It was the first time I’d ever had that done. It was nice having someone look out for little things like that. This was a great service.

When she finished, she turned me toward the mirror again.

And I could immediately tell from her reaction that she liked the result.

“Yeah,” she said, “that looks good on you.”

You could tell she’d been a little skeptical when I’d first walked through the door with a full head of hair and announced that I wanted it all shaved off.

But now that she was looking at the finished product, she seemed genuinely pleased with it.

And honestly, that boosted my confidence too.

I looked at myself and thought, Man.

That beard trim.

That smooth head shave.

That looks good on me.

I was starting to feel pretty damn good about the decision I’d made the night before.

Then came the final part of the appointment: the scalp massage.

She put a cover over my eyes to block out the light, and I leaned back in the chair.

Then she started massaging my scalp.

She had a pretty light touch, but somehow she knew exactly where to work. Whenever she hit the right spots, a shiver went down my spine. The whole thing was relaxing in a way I hadn’t really expected.

After everything—the shave, the beard trim, the hot towel, the steam, and then the massage—it was a pretty great way to finish the appointment.

Eventually, the massage ended and I was sat back up in the chair. She gave me a final look in the mirror and asked me to feel my head myself.

I brought my arm out from under the cape and gave my head a rub.

It was definitely smooth.

I had heard of guys getting shaved at the barber and being disappointed by the result. But this woman could back up her talk.

Baby-butt smooth indeed.

I got up and paid, gave her a good tip, thanked her, and walked out the door.

And there I was, stepping out into the sunlight with my freshly shaved head practically glowing.

Then I got back in my pickup and started the trip home. I kept feeling my head, still impressed by how slick and smooth it was.

And just like that, the vacation was over.
