Later that evening, the apartment had become unusually quiet. The excitement of Anjali’s first full day with a shaved head had finally tired her out, and while the two women were sitting together on the sofa talking, Anjali gradually stretched herself across it until her head came to rest comfortably on Maya’s lap. Within a few minutes her eyes were closed. Maya looked down at her best friend and smiled faintly. Only a day earlier, Anjali’s hair would have been spread across Maya’s lap and over the cushion. Now there was nothing there except the clean, rounded shape of her freshly shaved head. Almost without thinking, Maya rested her palm gently on Anjali’s crown.
The smoothness surprised her again. Maya slowly moved her palm from the front of Anjali’s head across the crown and toward the back, feeling the curve of the scalp directly beneath her hand. “How can this still feel so smooth?” she murmured. Anjali kept her eyes closed but smiled and said, “I thought I was sleeping.” Maya replied, “You are. I’m not disturbing you.” Anjali laughed softly. “You’re rubbing my head. That’s generally considered disturbing.” Maya smiled but didn’t remove her hand. Instead, she let the tips of her fingers travel lightly over the smooth scalp, following the curve from the crown toward one side.
Maya found the sensation strangely pleasant. There was no hair between her fingertips and Anjali’s skin, so she could feel every gentle change in the shape of her head. Out of curiosity she lightly drew the tip of one fingernail across the crown. Anjali immediately scrunched her shoulders and laughed. “Maya! That tickles.” Maya grinned and asked, “Really?” before lightly repeating it near the side. Anjali laughed again and tried to move her head away without actually getting up. “Stop! Your nail feels completely different when there’s no hair.” Maya returned to using the soft pads of her fingers and said, “I’m conducting research.” Still lying on her lap, Anjali asked, “Research for what?” Maya placed her palm over the crown again and answered simply, “For my turn.”
That made Anjali open her eyes. She remained with her head on Maya’s lap and looked upward at her. “You’re still serious about shaving?” Maya nodded. “Completely serious.” Anjali looked genuinely surprised. “I thought you’d wake up today, think about what you said and quietly forget the whole idea.” Maya slowly stroked her palm over Anjali’s head again and replied, “Actually, this is making me more curious. It’s such a lovely feeling touching your scalp. It’s incredibly smooth, and I can feel the entire curve of your head directly. I want to know what my own head feels like without hair.”
Anjali finally sat up and rubbed the place Maya had been touching. “This is funny. Yesterday you were spending all your energy convincing me. Now you’re convincing yourself.” Maya laughed, but there was another thought beneath her amusement that she wasn’t prepared to share. Her first idea had backfired spectacularly. Some jealous part of her had hoped that taking away Anjali’s hair might weaken Rohan’s attraction. Instead, Rohan had stared at Anjali as though Maya had somehow improved her for him. He had called her beautiful, admired the shape of her head, touched the smooth scalp and even kissed her crown. Maya knew perfectly well that shaving herself couldn’t magically change his feelings, but jealousy had planted another question in her mind anyway: what would Rohan think when he saw her bald?
Anjali interrupted her thoughts by asking, “So when are you actually planning to do it?” Maya answered, “Tomorrow.” Anjali’s eyebrows rose. “Tomorrow?” Maya shrugged. “Why wait?” Anjali immediately burst out laughing. “Listen to you! Yesterday I was saying I’d shave someday and you were the one saying, ‘Why someday? Let’s do it now.'” Maya smiled. “Exactly. I’m following my own excellent advice.” Anjali shook her head and said, “You created a monster.” Maya pointed toward Anjali’s bald head. “Actually, I created that first.”
Curious now, Anjali moved behind Maya and gathered Maya’s hair tightly away from her face, recreating the same trick Maya had used on her before the first shave. She pulled it firmly backward so Maya’s forehead, temples and ears were exposed as much as possible, then studied her reflection. Maya looked at herself and asked, “Well?” Anjali tilted her head thoughtfully and said, “Now I understand why you kept doing this to me. I’m trying to imagine what your face will look like with absolutely nothing around it.” Maya asked, “And what is the verdict?” Anjali smiled. “I think you’ll look good.” Maya immediately replied, “Only good?” Anjali laughed. “Don’t become demanding before you’ve even sat in the chair.”
Maya reached across and rubbed Anjali’s crown again. “I want exactly this, though. Not just short. Clippers first and then razor. Completely smooth.” Anjali grinned. “Definitely. I’m not allowing you into the bald club with rough zero stubble.” Maya looked at her incredulously. “Yesterday you didn’t even know zero would feel rough.” Anjali proudly ran a hand over her scalp. “Yesterday I was a beginner. Today I have experience.” Maya laughed. “One day without hair and suddenly you’re a consultant.”
The next evening they set off for the same barbershop. Maya drove the bike while Anjali sat behind her wearing a cap, although by now she wasn’t particularly interested in hiding her baldness. During the short ride Anjali kept teasing Maya whenever they stopped, asking, “Still brave?” Each time Maya replied, “Keep talking. You’re only making me more determined.” Yet as they got closer to the barbershop, Maya became increasingly aware of her own hair moving in the wind. By the time they reached the familiar shop, she knew that if she went through with this, the ride home would feel completely different.
Maya stopped outside and began parking the bike properly while Anjali climbed off first. “I’ll go inside,” Anjali said. Maya immediately warned her, “Don’t tell him anything yet.” Anjali gave her an innocent expression and asked, “Why would I?” Maya narrowed her eyes. “Because I know you.” Anjali laughed and disappeared through the door while Maya remained outside securing the bike.
Inside, the barber looked up and recognized Anjali almost immediately, although the cap briefly confused him. He smiled and asked, “Madam, again?” Anjali walked toward the chair and said very seriously, “Yes. I need a haircut.” The barber looked at her cap and seemed puzzled. “Haircut?” Anjali nodded. “Yes.” He stared at her for another second and then laughed. “Where is the hair to give haircut?” Anjali couldn’t maintain the serious expression any longer. She burst out laughing and pulled off her cap, revealing the completely shaved head beneath it. “You remembered!”
The barber laughed when he saw the smooth scalp. “Yesterday madam! Already back?” Anjali proudly rubbed the top of her head and replied, “Yes, but today I’m not the customer.” The barber looked toward the entrance just as Maya walked in after parking the bike. His eyes moved from Maya’s full head of hair to Anjali’s completely bare scalp and then back again. Before Maya could say anything, Anjali pointed toward her and announced, “Today she needs the haircut.”
The barber looked at Maya and asked, “What haircut, madam?” Anjali immediately placed both hands over her own bald head and answered for her, “Same like me. Shave her.” The barber paused, looked at Anjali’s completely smooth scalp and then at Maya’s hair again. “Same?” he asked with an amused smile. Anjali nodded enthusiastically. “Exactly the same. Machine first and then razor. Completely clean.”
Maya shook her head and laughed. “Look at her. Yesterday she was nervous when you switched on the clippers. Today she’s giving you instructions.” Anjali rubbed her scalp proudly and replied, “Experience changes people.” The barber laughed with them but then looked directly at Maya, making sure the decision was hers. “Full head shave, madam?” Maya nodded. “Yes.” He asked, “Razor also?” Maya glanced at Anjali’s gleaming scalp and smiled. “Yes. If you’re making mine like hers, then properly like hers. I don’t want her spending the next week telling me her head is smoother.”
Anjali laughed. “Oh, I absolutely would.”
The barber pointed toward the empty chair. “Okay, madam. Sit.”
For the first time since suggesting the idea, Maya hesitated. Yesterday she had stood beside this exact chair holding a phone while Anjali’s ponytail disappeared. She had watched the clippers travel across Anjali’s head and had observed every stage of the razor shave with the comfortable knowledge that none of it was happening to her. Now she was standing in front of the same chair with all of her own hair still intact.
Anjali noticed immediately. She walked behind Maya, put both hands on her shoulders and gently pushed her toward the chair. “What happened to all that confidence?” Maya laughed and replied, “Nothing happened.” Anjali said, “Good. Then sit.” Maya lowered herself into the barber chair, and the barber turned it toward the large illuminated mirror.
Maya stared at herself. Her hair was still completely intact. Standing immediately behind her was Anjali, completely bald and smiling broadly. The contrast between them was almost comical. Maya raised a hand and slowly touched her own hair, suddenly conscious of its texture and weight because she knew she was about to lose it.
Anjali leaned closer until both of them were visible together in the mirror and said, “Now you know exactly how I felt yesterday.” Maya looked from her own hair to Anjali’s perfectly smooth scalp. She remembered Rohan’s reaction to Anjali that morning, and the jealousy behind her decision surfaced once more. But alongside it was something genuine: she really did want to know what her own bare scalp looked and felt like.
Maya smiled at Anjali’s reflection and said, “Okay. Let’s make it two.”
The barber reached for the cape and unfolded it behind Maya. At exactly the same moment, Anjali took out her phone and started recording. Maya saw the phone appear in the mirror and laughed. “Of course you’re recording this.” Anjali grinned and replied, “You recorded mine. Now it’s my turn.”
The barber brought the cape around Maya’s shoulders.
For Anjali, it was simply the beginning of another exciting adventure with her best friend.
For Maya, it was something more complicated. Curiosity had brought her back to the barbershop, friendship had made the idea seem fun, and jealousy had quietly given her the final push.
Now there was only one thing left to discover.
What would Maya look like when every strand was gone?
The barber fastened the cape securely around Maya’s neck and spread it smoothly across her chest and lap. Anjali immediately moved beside the mirror with her phone ready, already looking far too pleased with herself. Maya glanced at Anjali’s completely bare head and then at her own long hair in the mirror. The contrast was almost comical. “Enjoy looking at this,” Maya said, touching her hair. “It isn’t going to last much longer.” Anjali slowly polished her own smooth crown with her palm and replied, “Yesterday you stood there recording every second of my shave. Today I’m going to enjoy being on this side of the chair.”
The barber combed through Maya’s hair and studied its length before looking at her through the mirror. “Madam, since you want a complete clean shave, instead of using the trimmer first, I can go directly with the razor. I’ll wet the hair properly and remove it gradually with the razor itself. After the hair is gone, I’ll lather the whole scalp and shave it again closely.” Maya looked surprised. “Direct razor? No trimmer at all?” The barber nodded. “No trimmer. Direct razor, slowly.” Anjali’s face immediately brightened. “Do that! Mine was machine first and then razor. Yours will be different.” Maya looked at Anjali’s gleaming scalp for a moment and smiled. “Fine. Direct razor. But when you’re finished, I want mine as smooth as hers.”
The barber began by combing Maya’s hair completely backward from the forehead. He sprayed warm water over it, first dampening the surface and then lifting the strands so the moisture could penetrate to the roots. Maya felt the water gradually reach her scalp. Her hair became heavier and darker as it absorbed the moisture, losing its volume and settling against the shape of her head. The barber worked the water through with his fingertips, massaging across the top, around the crown, down the back and along both sides. Maya closed her eyes and smiled. “This is actually very relaxing.” Anjali laughed. “Enjoy your last massage with hair.” Maya opened one eye and warned, “If you say ‘last’ before everything tonight, I’m switching off that phone.”
Once the hair was thoroughly damp, the barber combed it backward again until it lay neatly against Maya’s scalp. He explained that the first razor work would remove and progressively shorten the bulk of the hair; afterward, fresh lather and a second shave would create the truly smooth finish. Maya nodded. She had already made her decision and now found herself strangely eager to experience every stage of it.
The barber lowered Maya’s chin slightly and positioned the razor near her crown. Maya became quiet as soon as she felt the first cool contact against her scalp. His free hand steadied the section, and the razor began its first slow movement toward the back. A soft scraping sound reached Maya’s ears. When the blade lifted, a small pale path had appeared through the dark wet hair. Several damp strands dropped onto the cape while a few slid down toward her lap.
Anjali immediately whispered, “There. Your first bald patch.” Maya stared at it in the mirror. “That looks so strange.” The barber cleaned the razor and placed it immediately beside the first path. Another controlled stroke widened the exposed area. More wet hair released and landed softly on the cape. The blade returned again, and another strip appeared. The little patch at Maya’s crown slowly became a broader area of exposed scalp.
What fascinated Maya most was how clearly she could distinguish each newly shaved section. The razor would settle against the wet hair, move with a faint scraping sound and lift. Then, almost immediately, the exposed skin felt cooler. “I can feel the air exactly where you’ve shaved,” she said. Anjali grinned. “That’s the bald-head breeze. Yesterday I was trying to explain it to you.” Maya smiled. “Fine. You were right about one thing.”
The barber continued down the centre of the back. He worked patiently rather than trying to remove too much at once. Stroke after stroke, the bare path extended farther from the crown toward the nape. Damp strands accumulated across Maya’s cape. Every so often she heard the tiny sound of another section landing in her lap and looked down to see pieces of the hair that had surrounded her face only minutes earlier lying loose across the fabric.
As the central back became increasingly bare, the breeze from the shop fan reached a larger portion of Maya’s scalp. She smiled at the peculiar mixture of sensations: wet hair still hanging heavily around the sides while the middle of her head felt cool and exposed. When the barber finally cleared the centre almost to the nape, Anjali looked at the unusual half-finished style and burst out laughing. “Maya, this is magnificent.” Maya looked at her suspiciously. “Meaning terrible?” Anjali nodded. “Completely terrible. Bald through the middle with all that hair hanging on the sides.” Maya started laughing too. “Make sure you save this video. Nobody else is ever seeing me like this again.”
The barber moved to Maya’s left side next. He combed the remaining damp hair downward and backward, carefully controlling it around her ear. Maya felt the razor settle where the exposed crown met the remaining hair. The next slow stroke released another section, and several damp strands dropped directly onto her shoulder before sliding down the cape. A second stroke widened the bare area. A third brought it closer toward her ear.
Because the razor was now working beside her ear, Maya could hear the faint scraping sound much more clearly. She closed her eyes and concentrated on it. There was the gentle contact of the blade, the controlled movement, the quiet scrape, then the lift and a brief pause while the barber cleared it. Afterward came that familiar little wash of coolness over the newly exposed skin. “I can tell exactly where he’s shaving without looking,” Maya told Anjali. Anjali laughed. “You’re enjoying this far more than I did.” Maya smiled with her eyes still closed. “I think I am.”
The barber carefully repositioned Maya’s ear where necessary and worked around its upper edge and behind it. Gradually the remaining hair on the left side disappeared until the complete curve from Maya’s crown down toward her ear was visible. When Maya opened her eyes and saw herself, she stared for several seconds. “So that’s actually the shape of my head.” Anjali studied her reflection and replied, “I told you. You’ve got a nice shape.” Maya smiled. Hearing it made another thought appear almost automatically: If Anjali thinks so, maybe Rohan will too.
The right side came next. Once again the barber combed the remaining wet hair into position and began adjoining the already bare crown. Each slow razor movement created another clean path. More damp strands dropped onto Maya’s cape and lap, and she found herself enjoying even that—the quiet evidence of the transformation accumulating in front of her. When Anjali asked, “Any regret yet?” Maya answered immediately, “None. I actually love this.”
The barber continued carefully around the right ear until the last substantial curtain of hair along the side disappeared. Both sides and the entire back were now exposed, leaving only the shortened damp hair across the upper part of Maya’s head and toward her forehead.
Maya looked at it and smiled. “Top now?”
“Yes, madam,” the barber replied.
Anjali moved closer with her phone. “This is the part you’ve been waiting for.”
The barber combed the shortened top hair into position. Because the earlier work around the crown had already reduced some of its length, uneven damp strands now rested across the upper scalp. Maya watched in the mirror as he positioned the razor at the crown. The blade touched down gently, and then he began a slow, controlled movement forward toward her forehead.
The sensation made Maya’s smile widen almost immediately. She could mentally follow the razor as it travelled over the rounded crown and along the top of her head. Short damp hairs collected ahead of the blade before releasing and falling. Several landed directly in Maya’s lap with tiny soft taps. When the razor finally lifted near the front, a long clean path had appeared through the remaining hair.
Maya laughed softly. “Oh, I really liked that.”
Anjali laughed with her. “You liked having a razor run over your head?”
“That crown-to-forehead stroke. Yes. It’s strangely soothing.”
The barber cleaned the razor and positioned it beside the first path. Again it rested against Maya’s crown, and again the controlled stroke travelled forward. The quiet scrape seemed to follow the exact curve of her head. Another collection of shortened hair slipped down onto the cape, and the clean bald area across the top became wider.
“Again,” Maya said with a grin.
Anjali laughed. “Listen to her! Yesterday you were the one telling me I was getting too comfortable with being bald.”
“I withdraw all previous criticism.”
The barber continued methodically. Crown to forehead, lift, clean the blade, return to the crown. Each pass narrowed the remaining strip of hair. Maya sometimes watched in the mirror and sometimes closed her eyes so she could concentrate entirely on the sensation. Without looking, she could still tell where the razor was. She felt its careful contact at the crown, its gradual progress over the top and the release near the forehead. Then cool air reached the newly cleared path.
The repeated strokes became the part Maya enjoyed most. There was something calming about the predictability of them. The barber never rushed. Each pass removed only what he could control safely. The remaining hair became a smaller and smaller island surrounded by bare scalp.
Anjali pointed dramatically at the last narrow section. “That’s it. Last hair.”
Maya looked at herself carefully. “Okay. I’m watching this one.”
The barber positioned the razor at the crown again and made the final controlled stroke toward the front. The remaining short hair gathered ahead of the blade and then released, falling onto the cape among everything that had already been removed.
When the razor lifted, there was no visible hairstyle left.
Maya was bald.
For several seconds she simply stared at her reflection. Her ears seemed more noticeable, her forehead flowed directly into the curve of her scalp, and for the first time she could see the complete outline of her head. Then she broke into a broad smile. “I actually love it.”
Anjali rubbed her own scalp proudly. “Welcome to the club.”
The barber ran his fingertips across Maya’s newly exposed head and explained, “Hair is gone, but this isn’t the final smooth shave. There is still fine roughness. Now I’ll lather and shave everything closely.” Maya immediately replied, “Yes. Completely smooth. I don’t want Anjali winning.”
Anjali laughed. “You’re already competitive about baldness.”
Without hair framing her face, Maya also noticed the fine facial hair more clearly under the bright mirror lights. She touched one cheek and asked the barber, “Can you shave my face too?” He confirmed, “Full face?” Maya nodded. “Yes. Head and face both. Make everything clean together.” Anjali burst out laughing. “Now who is turning a head shave into a complete package?” Maya looked at her. “Apparently you started a tradition.”
The barber wet Maya’s bare scalp again. Maya immediately noticed how different water felt without hair. It touched the skin directly and travelled quickly down the sides and back. “That is such a strange feeling,” she said. The barber then worked a generous layer of shaving lather over the entire scalp, from the forehead across the crown, around both sides and down to the nape. After slightly reclining the chair, he lathered Maya’s face as well. Maya looked at the white foam covering both her head and face and started laughing. “I look ridiculous.” Anjali replied, “You look exactly like somebody who’s about to become ridiculously smooth.”
The second head shave felt entirely different from the first. There was no longer substantial hair for the razor to work through. The barber started near the nape and moved upward. Maya heard a much finer rasp as the blade removed the minute remaining stubble. After each pass, the barber’s fingertips checked the skin. If he detected resistance, he adjusted the direction and shaved the area again.
Up the back toward the crown, then from the crown downward. Around the left side, upward from near the ear. Across the right side from another direction. Over the crown, where the growth changed direction, the barber used several overlapping controlled passes. Maya relaxed farther into the chair as the process settled into a quiet rhythm: razor, faint scrape, wipe, fingertips checking the finish, then razor again.
When he returned to the crown and began working toward Maya’s forehead, she smiled again. Anjali noticed immediately. “Favourite part?” Maya kept her eyes closed and replied, “Definitely.” The razor travelled slowly over the lathered crown toward the front. Without longer hair, the sensation was much lighter now—a close, gentle glide over the scalp, followed by an immediate feeling of smoothness. The barber returned to the crown and repeated the stroke beside it, then changed direction and worked from near the forehead backward.
Maya became aware that she was imagining Rohan again. She remembered how naturally his palm had travelled across Anjali’s smooth head and how sincerely he had told her she looked beautiful. Maya pictured him seeing her tomorrow, staring in surprise and perhaps asking if he could touch her head too. She imagined his palm moving from her forehead over the crown and finding exactly the smooth surface the barber was creating now. He liked hers, Maya thought. Maybe he’ll like mine just as much.
After completing the scalp, the barber moved to Maya’s lathered face. He worked carefully with short, controlled strokes, gently keeping the skin taut with one hand while guiding the razor with the other. Maya remained completely relaxed. Around the more delicate contours, the barber shortened his movements and repositioned her face as necessary. Anjali watched through her phone and said, “You’re looking far too comfortable.” Maya smiled without moving. “Because I am comfortable. This turned out much more relaxing than I expected.”
Once the face shave was complete, the barber returned to Maya’s scalp for his final inspection. His fingertips travelled from the nape upward, across the crown, around both ears and over the top in several directions. A couple of tiny areas still produced faint resistance, so he reapplied a little lather and gave them short finishing passes. He checked again, reversed his palm over the crown and appeared satisfied.
The barber opened the cape. Maya looked down as the collection of wet and shortened hair that had accumulated across her chest and lap slid away. Some fell softly onto the floor while he brushed the remaining loose strands from her shoulders and neck. When he casually asked whether she wanted her underarms shaved as well, Maya immediately laughed. “No need. Already clean-shaved.” Anjali burst out laughing. “Finally, one service you don’t need.”
Cool water was sprayed over Maya’s freshly shaved scalp and face. Maya closed her eyes and smiled at the sudden chill. The barber wiped her clean with fresh tissue and applied a small amount of cooling gel. His broad palm then travelled over the scalp one final time, forehead to crown, crown to nape, back in the opposite direction and sideways across the top. His fingertips checked carefully behind both ears and along the nape.
“Finished, madam.”
Maya immediately raised one hand and lightly tapped the crown with her fingertips. The unfamiliar direct contact made her laugh. Then she flattened her palm against the top and slowly rubbed backward.
Her expression changed.
“Wow.”
Anjali started laughing because she recognized the reaction immediately. “There it is.”
Maya rubbed from her forehead over the crown and all the way down the back. Then she reversed direction, nape to crown. Her palm moved sideways across the top, down one side and then the other. There was virtually nothing for her skin to catch against. She could feel the exact rounded contour of her skull directly beneath the soft freshly shaved scalp.
“This is unbelievably smooth,” Maya said. “I understood yours was smooth when I touched it, but feeling your own head like this is completely different.”
Anjali stepped beside the chair. “Move. Official inspection.”
She placed her palm on Maya’s crown and slowly rubbed backward. Then she reversed direction, crossed the top sideways and deliberately pretended to consider the result. Maya waited impatiently. “Well?”
Anjali finally smiled. “Extremely smooth.”
Maya grinned. “Smoother than yours?”
Anjali immediately rubbed her own scalp and then Maya’s again. “Mine has a little growth already. So right now… yours might actually win.”
Maya lifted both eyebrows triumphantly. “The student has defeated the teacher.”
“Only until I shave again.”
Maya stood from the chair, and for a moment the two women simply looked at each other. Without the chair separating them, the similarity was even more striking. Anjali’s scalp had the faintest beginning of new growth from the previous day’s shave, while Maya’s was freshly razor-smooth and bright beneath the shop lights.
Anjali reached up and ran her palm affectionately across Maya’s crown. “I can’t believe you actually did it.”
Maya smiled and placed her own palm over Anjali’s head. “I can’t believe you made me want to do it.”
“I made you?”
“You started this.”
Anjali laughed. “Excuse me? You practically ran a campaign to get me shaved.”
Maya couldn’t argue with that. She laughed, then gently pulled Anjali closer. The two friends hugged tightly, their laughter becoming softer as the excitement of the evening finally settled.
When they separated, Anjali playfully rubbed Maya’s smooth head once more. Maya immediately returned the gesture, sweeping her palm across Anjali’s crown. “Still rougher than mine,” Maya teased. Anjali narrowed her eyes. “Enjoy your victory while it lasts.”
Then, in the easy affection that had always existed between them, Anjali leaned forward and gave Maya a quick kiss on the top of her freshly shaved head. Maya froze for half a second before laughing. “What was that?”
“Bald-club initiation.”
“Rohan already invented that.”
“Then I’m stealing it.”
Maya smiled, placed one hand gently behind Anjali’s head and returned the gesture with a quick affectionate kiss on her crown. “There. Now you’re reinitiated.”
Anjali laughed and hugged her again.
Finally they turned toward the barber. Maya ran her palm over her head yet again and said, “Thank you. You did it really well. I didn’t expect the direct razor shave to feel so relaxing.” Anjali added with a grin, “And now you’ve created another customer who will keep coming back asking for a smooth head.” The barber laughed and told them they were welcome anytime.
Maya thanked him once more, while Anjali collected her cap but deliberately didn’t put it on. Maya had no cap at all, and she didn’t ask for one.
They stepped toward the door together.
The moment Maya crossed outside, the evening breeze touched her bare scalp from forehead to nape.
She stopped.
“Ohhh.”
Anjali knew immediately. “The wind?”
Maya slowly rubbed her crown and laughed. “The whole head. I can feel it everywhere.”
Anjali stood beside her with her own bald head uncovered. “Told you.”
Maya looked at her best friend beneath the streetlights. Twenty-four hours earlier, Anjali had been the only bald woman riding home from this shop. Now there were two of them.
Maya slipped an arm around Anjali’s shoulders, and Anjali put hers around Maya’s waist as they walked toward the parked bike. Halfway there, Anjali reached up and rubbed Maya’s crown once more. Maya immediately retaliated by rubbing Anjali’s.
“Stop checking mine,” Maya said.
“I’m comparing.”
“Mine is smoother.”
“For tonight.”
They laughed as they reached the bike, both completely bald and neither making the slightest attempt to hide it.
Maya ran her palm over her freshly shaved crown once more before taking the keys from her pocket. She loved the strange new smoothness. She loved the cool air touching her head. She had even loved the slow rhythm of the razor removing her hair.
But beneath all that genuine enjoyment remained one private anticipation.
Tomorrow, Rohan would see her.
Maya smiled as she started the bike.
Her first plan had made Anjali even more attractive to him.
Now she couldn’t wait to discover what happened when he saw that Maya had gone bald too.
By the time Maya and Anjali reached their apartment, neither woman had managed to keep her hands away from her head for more than a few minutes. Maya parked the bike, removed the keys and immediately ran her palm from her forehead over her freshly shaved crown and down toward the nape. The perfectly smooth surface still surprised her every time she touched it. Anjali caught her doing it and laughed, “Again?” Maya rubbed the crown once more and replied, “You did exactly the same thing yesterday.” Anjali passed her own palm over her bald head and said, “Yes, but I had a legitimate reason. I was discovering baldness.” Maya grinned. “And what do you think I’m doing?” They walked upstairs laughing, and halfway up Anjali mischievously rubbed Maya’s crown as she passed her. Maya immediately reached back and rubbed Anjali’s head in return. “Mine is smoother,” Maya announced. Anjali rolled her eyes. “Only because yours is fresh. Give it until tomorrow morning.”
Inside the apartment, Maya went almost directly to the largest mirror. Under the brighter light she could finally study the transformation properly. She turned her head slowly from left to right, examining the curve above her ears and the smooth transition toward the back. Then she lowered her chin slightly, turned sideways and tried to see as much of the crown as possible. Finally both palms went against the sides of her head and travelled upward until they met at the top. “It’s still strange seeing myself without any hair,” she admitted. Anjali walked up behind her so that their two bald heads appeared side by side in the mirror. “Strange good or strange bad?” Maya slowly rubbed the crown. “Very good. I didn’t expect to enjoy this so much.” Anjali smiled. “That’s exactly what happened to me. First you keep looking at it, then you keep touching it, and after that you wonder why you needed hair in the first place.”
Maya reached over and ran her palm across Anjali’s head, deliberately moving against the faint growth. “Yours is getting rough.” Anjali immediately inspected Maya’s freshly shaved crown in return. Her palm travelled forward, backward and then sideways. “And yours is annoyingly smooth.” Maya smiled triumphantly. “So we agree mine is better.” Anjali laughed. “For tonight.” Maya tilted her head toward her. “Check again.” Anjali rubbed it once more with exaggerated seriousness before saying, “Fine. Extremely smooth.” Maya laughed and then touched it herself again, unable to resist. “I loved the razor part more than I expected. Especially when he was shaving from the crown toward the forehead. You could actually feel the blade travelling across the whole curve of the head.” Anjali smiled knowingly. “Now you understand why I kept talking about my shave.” Maya nodded. “Completely.”
For several minutes they remained in front of the mirror comparing their heads like two children with new toys. Anjali would rub Maya’s crown, Maya would retaliate by rubbing hers, and then one of them would invent another joke about belonging to the bald club. Eventually Anjali looked at their reflections and said, “You know what’s missing?” Maya asked, “What?” Anjali tapped her own scalp, pointed at Maya’s and then held up three fingers. “Member number three.” Maya immediately understood. “Rohan.” Anjali smiled. “Exactly. It’s the weekend. Why don’t we call him here tonight? All three bald members together.”
Maya’s interest sharpened instantly. She had been thinking about Rohan’s reaction from the moment the barber had placed the razor against her crown. Waiting until the following morning suddenly seemed unnecessary. “Call him,” she said almost too quickly. Anjali looked at her and laughed. “That eager?” Maya tried to sound casual. “I just want to see his reaction.” What she kept to herself was how badly she wanted that reaction. During the shave she had repeatedly imagined Rohan seeing her bald, admiring her head shape and perhaps asking to touch the freshly shaved scalp just as he had with Anjali. Now she could find out tonight.
They had already picked up chilled beers, cigarettes and snacks on the way home, so they quickly turned the apartment into an informal weekend party space. The beers went into the refrigerator, snacks were arranged across the table, ashtrays were placed near the balcony, and Anjali connected her phone to the speaker. She sent Rohan a message telling him to come over because they had a surprise. When he immediately asked what it was, Anjali replied only, “Come and find out.” Maya laughed. “He’s going to know something is wrong.” Anjali shook her head. “He knows I’m already bald. He’ll think I’m doing some stupid joke. He won’t expect you.”
That gave Anjali another idea. She disappeared into the bedroom and returned holding two bandanas. “Wear this.” Maya laughed. “Why?” Anjali tied one over her own bald head. “Because we’re doing the reveal together.” Maya pointed at her. “But he already knows you’re bald.” Anjali replied, “Exactly. That makes yours less obvious.” Maya accepted the second bandana and carefully tied it over her freshly shaved scalp. The fabric itself felt strange because there was no hair underneath it. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled. Somewhere beneath her amusement was nervous anticipation. In a few minutes she would finally see whether the transformation affected Rohan the way she hoped.
The doorbell rang later that evening, and both women looked at each other immediately. Anjali whispered, “Ready?” Maya touched the bandana covering her smooth head and nodded. When Anjali opened the door, Rohan walked in carrying some additional snacks. He looked at Anjali first, then Maya, and immediately became suspicious. “Why are both of you wearing matching bandanas? You look like you’re planning something.” Anjali laughed and told him, “Come inside.” Rohan pointed toward her covered head. “I already know you’re bald. What’s the secret?” Then his eyes shifted toward Maya. “Wait. Why is she wearing one?”
Maya’s smile widened. Anjali looked at her and began counting, “Three… two… one.” At the same moment both women pulled away their bandanas. Anjali’s familiar bald head appeared first, but Rohan’s attention immediately jumped to Maya. For a couple of seconds he simply stared. “No way.” Maya slowly rubbed her freshly shaved crown and smiled. “Surprise.” Rohan stepped closer, genuinely astonished. “You actually shaved your head too?” Maya nodded. “Completely. Direct razor.” Anjali proudly added, “And hers is smoother than mine right now.” Rohan laughed. “What happened to you two? Is baldness contagious?”
He gave Maya a warm hug, and when they separated he looked carefully at her new appearance. “It really suits you too, Maya. Seriously. You look beautiful.” Maya felt an immediate rush of happiness. It was exactly the kind of reaction she had imagined while sitting in the barber chair. She smiled and asked, “Really?” Rohan nodded. “Definitely. Your head shape works with it.” Then he looked from Maya to Anjali and rubbed his own clean-shaven scalp. “This is unbelievable. All three of us are bald now.” Anjali stood beside him and announced, “The bald club is complete.” Rohan laughed. “We look ridiculous.” Maya corrected him, “Beautifully ridiculous.” Rohan looked at all three of them in the mirror and agreed, “Fine. Beautiful bald gang.”
The phrase stayed with them for the rest of the evening. They opened the beers, started the music and settled naturally into the easy friendship they had always shared. The only difference was that bald jokes now appeared every few minutes. Rohan announced that shampoo was officially prohibited in the apartment. Anjali calculated how much money all three could save on hair products. Maya suggested they should take a photograph from directly above so the ceiling light would reflect from three heads at once. Rohan declared them the most aerodynamic friendship group in the city. Every so often one of the women would casually rub his head, and Rohan would retaliate by briefly rubbing theirs.
As the night continued and everyone became more relaxed, Maya finally asked the question she had been carrying since the salon. Holding her beer in one hand, she rubbed her scalp with the other and looked at Rohan. “Okay, I want an answer. Who actually suits the bald look better—me or Anjali?” Anjali immediately turned toward her. “Maya, why does that question even need to exist?” Maya laughed as though it were nothing more than drunken competitiveness. “Because now there are two bald women. Obviously we need rankings.” Anjali shook her head. “After a few drinks you’ve decided baldness needs a competition?” Rohan looked between them and smiled awkwardly. “This sounds like a question where every possible answer gets me into trouble.”
Maya insisted, “Just answer.” Rohan thought for a moment and said, “Both of you genuinely look beautiful bald.” Maya waited. She could tell he hadn’t finished. Finally he added, “But if you’re forcing me to say who the look seems to suit most naturally, I’d probably say Anjali.” Something sank quietly inside Maya. She kept her smile in place, lifted her beer and took a long drink. Anjali looked uncomfortable and said, “See? That’s why the question wasn’t necessary.” Maya shrugged. “Relax. I asked him. He answered.” Outwardly she laughed and changed the subject. Inside, however, she felt the second beautiful backfire taking shape. Rohan liked her bald. He genuinely thought she looked beautiful. But even after Maya had removed every strand of her own hair, his attention still returned naturally to Anjali.
Maya refused to let the disappointment destroy the evening. The music became louder, another round of drinks was opened, and before long all three were dancing around the living room. They smoked occasionally near the open balcony, returned inside, laughed at one another’s terrible dance moves and invented increasingly ridiculous bald-club rules. At one point Anjali placed one palm on Maya’s head and another on Rohan’s and announced, “Quality inspection. Both acceptable.” Maya immediately grabbed Anjali’s crown and replied, “Inspector also requires inspection.” Rohan laughed as the three of them stood together rubbing one another’s heads like an absurd secret society.
Eventually the party exhausted them. The music became quieter, half-finished snacks covered the table, and conversation slowed until all three fell asleep around the living room. Anjali woke first the next morning and instinctively ran a palm across her scalp before even fully opening her eyes. The faint overnight growth had returned. She looked toward Maya, whose own freshly shaved scalp was also beginning to develop the slightest texture, and then toward Rohan, still asleep nearby. Smiling at the sight of all three bald heads in the same room, Anjali quietly ordered breakfast.
By the time Maya and Rohan woke, morning had almost become afternoon. They ate together, laughed about the previous night’s dancing and decided they didn’t want to waste the weekend sitting inside. After discussing several possibilities, they chose a movie. None of them covered their heads when they left. Maya considered wearing a cap for perhaps two seconds before deciding against it. She had deliberately shaved her head and now wanted to experience being outside with it completely visible.
Walking through the shopping centre as three bald friends attracted occasional glances. Maya noticed people looking from Rohan to Anjali and then to her, but instead of becoming embarrassed she found herself enjoying the attention. The cool air-conditioning moved directly across her scalp, and she loved the simplicity of having nothing to adjust, comb or move away from her face. Anjali leaned toward her and whispered, “People are definitely looking.” Maya smiled confidently. “Let them.” Rohan overheard and rubbed his own head. “That’s the correct bald-club attitude.”
Inside the cinema they took three seats near the back, with Rohan sitting between them. Once the lights dimmed and the film started, all three gradually relaxed. Some time into the movie, Anjali mischievously reached across and placed her palm on Rohan’s smooth head. Almost at the same moment Maya reached from the opposite side and did the same. Rohan turned slightly and whispered, “Seriously?” Both women suppressed their laughter while their hands briefly travelled over opposite sides of his crown. Anjali whispered, “Quality inspection.” Maya added, “Your shave isn’t as smooth as mine.” Rohan gently caught both their wrists and moved their hands away. “I have somehow become communal bald-club property.”
He smiled, but then his expression became more thoughtful. Looking from Anjali to Maya, he quietly asked whether they were simply teasing him or whether something more complicated was happening between the three of them. Maya looked toward Anjali. Anjali looked back at her. Neither answered immediately, and the silence itself told Rohan enough to know that the feelings involved were no longer merely playful. Rather than assuming what either woman wanted, he quietly made sure they were comfortable before anything changed between them.
Later, in the darkness of the cinema and after that mutual understanding had been established, Rohan shared a brief kiss with Anjali and, separately, with Maya. Neither moment was dramatic, but afterward the three became unusually quiet. The film continued on the screen while each of them privately tried to understand what had just happened. Maya had wanted Rohan’s attention for so long that finally receiving it didn’t produce the simple victory she had imagined. She was suddenly conscious of Anjali sitting on his other side, and Anjali was equally aware that her best friend clearly felt something deeper for him.
After the movie they walked out together, but the bald jokes temporarily disappeared. The journey back to the apartment was quieter than the journey there. Once inside, Anjali finally said, “We need to talk about what happened.” Rohan nodded immediately. Maya sat down opposite them and unconsciously rubbed her crown. For months she had hidden behind jokes, comparisons and small manipulations, but now there seemed little point pretending. She looked directly at Rohan and said, “I like you. I’ve liked you for much longer than I’ve admitted.”
Anjali stared at her. “Maya?” Maya looked toward her best friend and quietly said, “I know. I should have told you.” Anjali remained silent for several seconds before saying, “I love him too.” For the first time the truth existed openly between them. Maya could no longer pretend her jealousy was simply protectiveness, and Anjali could finally understand why some of Maya’s comments about Rohan had occasionally felt strange.
Rohan listened before answering. He told them he cared deeply about both of them, but he didn’t want either woman competing for him or agreeing to something simply because she feared losing him or losing their friendship. Maya looked down for a moment. That was precisely what she had been doing. First she had tried to alter Anjali’s appearance, secretly hoping Rohan would become less interested. When that failed, she had altered her own appearance and hoped he would become more interested in her. Neither strategy had changed the fundamental connection between Rohan and Anjali.
The conversation continued for a long time. Maya admitted that she had been comparing herself with Anjali far more than Anjali realized, although she didn’t explain every private thought that had originally motivated the first shave. Anjali admitted she was hurt that Maya hadn’t trusted her enough to say she liked Rohan too. Rohan made it clear that if the three of them were going to explore a relationship together, it couldn’t be treated as a competition or as a convenient solution to jealousy. Each connection had to be genuine, boundaries had to be discussed openly, and anyone had to be free to say that something wasn’t working.
Eventually Maya looked at Anjali. Anjali reached across and took her hand. That simple gesture loosened something inside Maya. She smiled faintly and asked, “So what you’re saying is that we’ve somehow turned the bald club into the world’s most complicated relationship?” Anjali laughed first, and Rohan followed. “Apparently,” he said. Anjali rubbed her scalp and looked between them. “Three members. Extremely strict entry requirements.” Maya finally laughed too. “Good thing we’re all qualified.”
They didn’t pretend that one conversation solved everything. Instead, the three agreed to explore their feelings honestly and slowly, without forcing anyone into a permanent arrangement and without allowing Maya and Anjali to turn affection into a contest. Rohan extended one hand toward each of them. Anjali took one and Maya took the other. For a moment all three simply stood together in the apartment, the strange journey from ordinary gym friends to three bald friends with openly complicated feelings finally catching up with them.
Anjali looked at the three smooth heads and started laughing again. “Whatever happens, we really do look ridiculous.” Rohan immediately corrected her. “Beautifully ridiculous.” Maya smiled at the phrase. This time it didn’t hurt. Her first plan had been to change Anjali so Rohan might look away from her. Her second had been to change herself so he might finally look toward Maya instead. Both plans had backfired, but Maya slowly ran her palm across her bald crown and realized that she didn’t regret shaving it. The experience had become hers independently of Rohan. She genuinely loved the look, the smoothness and the confidence it gave her.
The beautiful backfire had therefore become larger than Maya’s failed jealous plan. Anjali had discovered a version of herself she loved. Maya had unexpectedly discovered one too. Rohan had forced neither transformation, and copying Anjali hadn’t magically copied the connection Rohan felt with her. What finally changed things wasn’t a haircut, a razor or three matching bald heads. It was the moment Maya stopped trying to manipulate where Rohan looked and finally told the truth about where her own heart had been looking all along.
