So, because I’m crazy or something, I had 6 stories all going at the same time when an idea for a 7th story just goes and pops into my head. Anyway, I typed out a few paragraphs just to get it out of my brain so I could try to actually finish some of my other stories, but had a vague idea of maybe handing it off to someone be a collaboration.
I realized as I was beginning the story, that it also just happens to be really timely, which I shall explain in just a moment. In the meantimes, I fell into watching a bunch of youtubers all making the same vintage dress as part of a challenge, and then it hit me this would be a fun challenge for HSN writers to do.
The story is a variation on the “Groundhog Day” premiss. In case you’re not familiar, “Groundhog Day” is a 1990s film staring Bill Murray. In it Bill Murray’s character has to relive the same day, over and over till he figures out how to do it correctly. The day he relives happens to be groundhog day, which is a minor north american holiday where a native rodent predicts the weather.
Anyway, it’s a premise that has been a popular one since the movie came out. Both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Star Trek TNG” did variations on it, just to name a few.
What makes this the perfect time to do this as a challenge is that the 30th anniversary of the movie is coming up in a couple of months. Though this is making me feel old, it’s also just going to be a fun moment to mark in our own way.
So here’s the challenge:
-Write your story and publish it here on hairstorynetwork between February 2, 2023, which is actual groundhog day, and February 12, 2023, which is the 30th anniversary of the film’s release date.
-The story must involve reliving the same day at least 3 times, though you don’t have to go over all the same nitty gritty details each day.
-A main character should have some have some level of personal growth between the first time they live the day and the last.
-Though it can take place on Groundhog Day it doesn’t have to.
-You can title your story anything, but should be tagged and labelled as part of the Groundhog Day Challenge. So, anyone with me? Anything I left out that should be said?

26th November 2022 at 10:21 pm #45720klaatu48ParticipantI’ll pop this in my ol’ backbrain and see what comes of it… I like the idea!
13th December 2022 at 6:01 pm #46515Ginger HertenParticipantSo far, it looks like it might just be the 3 of us. And I’m nervous I might fail. I have the plot line of mine worked out, but of course getting it to gel into a fully formed story is another matter.
I’m resisting the impulse to spam comments on stories I like to suggest they consider participating. I just wish the forum got more traffic.
14th December 2022 at 6:23 am #46528SmartandShortParticipantI plan on writting a story for the challenge. Multiple haircut stories are always fun. Thanks for coming up with a fun challenge for the community.
14th December 2022 at 10:43 am #46534f35hParticipantMine’s coming along. Should be done in time, though as ever, it’s growing as I write….
Ginger, could you ask Admin to put something about this on the front page? It would get a lot more visibility that way.
16th December 2022 at 4:57 pm #46571GabrielParticipantIt is a wonderful idea, wonderful to experience as participant… Long hair cut to pieces and the next day you can do it better / different. Just who dreaming works… 🙂
I’m gonna think about it… and read your instructions carefully.
17th December 2022 at 11:05 pm #46595Ginger HertenParticipantGlad to see more participants and hear that progress is being made.
18th January 2023 at 10:59 pm #47431ABParticipantJust seeing this now but I love the idea. I’ll see what I can come up with!
2nd February 2023 at 10:05 am #47716f35hParticipantIt’s Feruary 2nd, at least where I am, so mine is up. Thanks for the concept, Ginger, and I hope you all enjoy it.
2nd February 2023 at 12:59 pm #47718Ginger HertenParticipantWell, I waited till after dawn here when the groundhogs actually start waking up from winter hibernation and decide if they are done hibernating and are ready to start foraging for food, or if they just want to sleep for another 6 weeks. According to the famous one in PA, it’s six more weeks, but I don’t particularly trust that one since he lives in a library and gets fed by a bunch of guys in top hats.
2nd February 2023 at 4:41 pm #47728klaatu48ParticipantMine is still very much under construction, but I can’t wait to read all of yours! (I may wait until I’m done though just to prevent subconscious influencing!)
2nd March 2023 at 6:11 pm #48305ABParticipantI was very, very late to getting this finished, but mine is up now.
4th March 2023 at 3:49 am #48318Ginger HertenParticipantAB, it was worth the wait.
5th March 2023 at 5:12 am #48346ABParticipantYou’re too kind, Ginger!
