Any real non-AI writers out there any more?

A year has passed since we put the AI written filter in but it looks like many people are choosing not to tag their work. Are there any writers out there who aren’t using AI to write for them or to add images? The thrill of this website used to be that the stories came from our fetish and our imaginations, but now it seems like slop is the main creator. Please let me know if you don’t use any AI so I can give comments to real writers rather than ChatGPT.

We’re here, it’s just hard to compete with the volume, so we get a bit lost in the fray.

Maybe we could start tagging ourselves. “Human written” or some such. Then people could search by that to sort faster.

Funny thing, I wrote a story about a story a while back about a youtuber who gave into the temptation of letting AI write her videos, “AI Temptation“, and very few people read it, I think because they thought I let AI write it. I did admittedly use AI to help write the parts that I needed to sound like AI, because it’s hard for me a human to imitate AI, but everything else was 100% me.

I’ll admit my drive to write and share has been dampened *a lot* by the tendency of new stories to disappear under the constant volume of output by the mediocrity machine known as AI.

Ideas keep coming, but it’s hard convincing myself to spend a few hours releasing them from my head knowing not many people may see them.

I’m around every so often, I just only make progress on my stories when I feel like it. As a writer, the best thing you can do on your work is take your time on it!

There is no AI problem — there is a bad writing problem.

My stories wouldn’t exist without AI — at the very least, I use it to translate them into English, and in general, I try to make things better with its help. AI can write some things very well on its own, but it struggles with more complex aspects like plot or subtle stylistic choices. But readers don’t really need that. That’s not a criticism, just a statement of reality. The reader came for quick gratification. They want a fetish trigger, not a plot. Even very bad AI is good enough for that.

A subscriber who recently supported me on Patreon praised an AI slop story with no plot, no logic, stretched over tens of thousands of words, but packed with fetish triggers from the very first line. I couldn’t even finish reading that “story” myself and fed it to ChatGPT. The AI complained that it found such awful generations unpleasant to read.

At first, I honestly tagged everything with “AI,” but now I’ll probably remove that tag everywhere.

I don’t think there’s any harm in using AI in the way you have described, as that’s exactly what it was meant for. It was always intended to be a bolster for human creativity and ingenuity, not a replacement.
You just know if you’re reading an AI generated story or a human generate story. It’s like like listening to a cassette. You just know it’s a cassette and not a CD, or driving a diesel car vs a petrol car. You can instinctively tell which it is.

Personally, I have used AI to help back me out a corner when writing or to give me ideas of where to take something, but I have never just let it write the entire thing. What’s the point?
None of us are getting paid, we’re all in it for the love of the game, so why give the task to a computer?

I do get paid something, but I consider the amounts symbolic. What interests me more is the quality of the product, which may well be paid.

As both a reader and an author, I honestly don’t care who wrote something or how it was written.

Yesterday I was describing a musical number through the rhythm of language — AI simply can’t do that yet. Though with a clear task in translation, I hope it managed fine.

And today, without touching the text at all, I’m only telling the AI the plot and what exactly needs to be rewritten and how, and I’m satisfied with the result — although writing it myself would probably have been faster.

A graphomaniac with AI is, of course, worse than a graphomaniac with a keyboard — they can generate garbage much faster — but the problem isn’t the AI.

I asked for writers who don’t use AI to come forward. I didn’t ask for anyone to defend their use of AI, as you continue to do. Make your own topic in the forum about the philosophical use of AI if that’s what interests you, because it isn’t needed or appropriate here. It’s just derailing the topic away from my original request for non-AI writers.

I’m used to the idea that in a discussion, you can reply not only to the original poster’s question but also to individual comments. I guess I may have been wrong.

In some of my stories, I don’t use AI until the proofreading, formatting, and translation stages. The last one, of course, has a major impact on the text, so I’m not sure whether that would count as not using AI.

My stories are 100% organic intelligence generated. They do however take a while.

It’s important to make the distinction between AI authors creating AI written stories (AI slop) and authors who use AI to assist them. I have no interest in writing, reading or defending the former.

I don’t think it’s fair to call somebody who uses AI to proofread an AI author. Anybody using Microsoft Word as far back as the 90s was using a form of AI – it was called spellcheck.
Equally, bouncing ideas off it at the draught stage does not qualify as AI written. In the past, with my old account, I did that because I can’t really ask my writing group to hear me out about ideas where a woman is paraded around naked on stage and has her head shaved because I would be ostracised very quickly. And rightly so (know your audience).
It would give me ideas, sometimes I would run with them, and often I would go in a completely different direction to what AI suggested. If you’re in a rut, you haven’t written for a while and want to free of the creative wheels, it’s a great tool.

If you’re the one putting your words on paper (or screen) which have come from your brain, you’re not an AI writer. You’re still doing the work, you’re still putting in the time, you’re just using a tool to make getting there a little more painless.
I SUCK at proofreading my own work. Would we have an issue with writers using Grammerley? Spellcheck?

For what’s it worth I’ve not been using AI to help me write on this account, only as an assistant on my old one before I deleted it.
Anybody familiar with what I did would know there was no way AI could write stories that were as unhinged, un politically correct and downright bad in places.

Producing AI slop and passing it off as your own is something very, very different, and should have no place on this site.
