Newest stories not always appearing at the top?

It looks like the newest stories don’t always appear at the top of the front page and can show up a few or even several stories down. I thought maybe it was just me not noticing particular stories before, but I know for a fact I just hit publish on one and it’s fourth in the list after stories I know were there this morning. Is this intentional? I just wanted to point it out if not.

This is just a quirk with how the home page works. Rather than ordering exactly by upload time it orders by day and then alphabetically, It is ordered exactly by time on all stories so I’m not entirely sure why the homepage does this.

Does it order alphabetically within a day though? Currently “Anjana Ambadi Hair Play And Haircut Story” is appearing below “The Plump Chap II – Influencing the Tennis Academy” despite coming first alphabetically of the stories posted on the 7th of september.

Even if it is alphabetical, I’m not sure this is entirely desirable behaviour for the front page, but if it’s how it works I guess it’s how it works.

It might have something to do with the meta data of the timezones. I’ll have a look when I get some time. Presumably there’s something if the all stories page has it that way.

It has nothing to do with the Alphabet & everything to do with when the story is posted. The first story of the calendar day gets posted at the top. Each subsequent story post that day gets posted underneath in order. Then when it’s a new day that story goes to the top. So if you want you story at the top, post it early in the calendar day. You can also set a time you want the story to be published, it does not have to post “immediately.” For example if it’s 23:50 on a give day, it may be worth it to wait 15 minutes before posting, so you story moves to the top & stays there for at least the day, as opposed to posting it at that time where it may be 4 or 5 stories down & then slip further as the next day hits.

I’ll take a look at ordering by date and time rather than just date, I’d honestly never noticed this!
