🎵 [Bouncy morning jingle fades out]
RJ Tania (bright, cheeky, over-the-top):

“Good morning, city! It’s your girl Tania back with your daily dose of caffeine and chaos—and today, we’re turning this studio into a full-blown beauty parlour! Yes, scissors, capes, and questionable life decisions—all happening LIVE!”

“Now, you all know we’ve been talking about our Makeover Madness contest—send us a voice note, tell us your sob story, and win a chance to get your hair chopped by the best stylist in town… or at least the most dramatic one.”

🎧 [Audience giggle SFX]
Tania’s voice drops into an exaggerated whisper: “And guess what? Someone actually did. Someone really out there, emotionally unstable—just the way we like it!” “So please, put your freshly-manicured hands together for the very brave, very… let’s say unpolished… Manisha!”

🎧 [Cue applause SFX]
Manisha steps into the studio—her breath catching slightly as she sees the mic, the soundboard, the stylist’s chair with its giant mirror, and RJ Tania with a grin that could slice marble. She hadn’t thought they’d actually call her. She had sent the voice note late one night, on impulse, curled up in bed with swollen eyes and a bowl of instant noodles. Now she was here. Somehow. Tania gestures flamboyantly.

“Come, come, don’t hide near the door. This is not a police station, Manisha—it’s just a radio show with tens of thousands of listeners judging you in real time!” Manisha tries to smile, stepping forward slowly. She’s wearing a faded blue kurta, her hair tied into a slightly frizzy ponytail, glasses slipping low on her nose. She feels like she’s walked into the wrong room. Tania looks her up and down—not meanly, just… loudly.

“Oh wow, you came dressed just like I imagined! Modest. Traditional. And entirely underwhelmed by fashion. Is this a makeover or an exorcism?” Manisha manages a faint laugh, though her face is warming up. Her voice barely makes it to the mic.

Manisha: “Hi… thanks for having me.” “Aww, she’s so polite. You must’ve been a school prefect or something. Very morally sound vibes. But tell me honestly—did you genuinely think we’d pick your entry? Be honest. You sound shocked.” Manisha stammers slightly. She hadn’t. Not really. It had felt like sending a message in a bottle.

Manisha (quietly): “I didn’t think I’d get called.” “And yet—here she is! From heartbreak to hair breakage, in under two weeks!”

🎧 [Cue drumroll SFX]

“For all our listeners out there who missed her message, let me paint the tragic scene: she recently went through a breakup. Yup. Man walked out, shampoo bottle stayed behind. Classic.”

“She said—and I quote—‘I want to let go of the past. I want to feel like myself again.’ Which is cute, really. So we thought: why not? Let’s bring her in and see what Vivek can do with… this.” Tania waves her hand vaguely toward Manisha’s hair, which is dry, slightly uneven, and clearly hasn’t seen a salon in months. Manisha instinctively touches her ponytail, suddenly aware of every strand. “Now tell me, Manisha—were you just emotionally overwhelmed when you sent us that message? Or… were you just low on cash and needed a free haircut?”

🎧 [Audience “Oooooh” SFX]
Manisha’s smile falters. She knows Tania is joking. Everyone knows. But the words sting a little more than expected. She tries to play along.
Manisha: “It was… a bit of both, maybe.” “Ahh, honesty. We love it. Vivek, did you hear that? We’ve got a budget beauty on our hands!”

🎧 [Cue salon scissors snipping sound]
Tania swivels dramatically to the stylist, a suave man in black named Vivek, who stands calmly beside the chair, arms crossed, looking amused. “This is Vivek, our in-house hair wizard. Now don’t be fooled by his calm exterior—he once gave a mohawk to a bride-to-be by accident. And he’s feeling creative today.” Manisha looks at the empty salon chair, gleaming under the soft ring light, the bright cobalt cape folded neatly beside it. Her stomach tightens. She had expected warmth, support, maybe some girl talk. Instead, she feels a little like she’s being led to a stage where the curtains might never close. Tania chirps again, oblivious—or pretending to be.

“Alright, listeners, don’t go anywhere. The cape’s coming out, the scissors are getting warm, and Manisha’s transformation from ‘meh’ to maybe-marriage-material is just moments away!”
🎧 [Upbeat jingle fades in]
“Stay tuned. We’ll be right back—with the first snip!”

🎵 [Music fades out, mic crackles]
RJ Tania (excitedly): “Alright, my lovely listeners—we’ve got our brave girl Manisha here in the studio, and now… entering from the shadows with scissors in one hand and a mysterious twinkle in his eye… it’s the man, the myth, the master of makeovers… VIVEK!”

🎧 [Applause + snipping sound effects]
Vivek (coolly): “Namaste, doston. I’m here to snip, shape, and slay. Let’s make some hair history.” Tania bursts into laughter. “Hair history, he says! Vivek, I don’t know if this is going to be a makeover or a murder scene!” Vivek grins, arms folded, eyeing Manisha with a smirk. “I’ve seen some heads walk into my salon crying and leave… still crying. But better groomed.”

“Tell us, Vivek,” Tania leans in dramatically, “What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you look at Manisha’s hair?”
Manisha stiffens slightly. She’s trying to smile, to keep up with the banter, but her fingers are twisting the hem of her kurta now.
Vivek (mock thoughtfully): “Hmm… it’s giving… ‘locked indoors since 2020.’ Bit dry. Bit confused. No shape. No story. Just… hair existing in survival mode.”

🎧 [Laughter SFX]
Tania claps her hands. “Exactly! Hair in distress. But lucky for her, we have you. She didn’t get this opportunity at some overpriced spa in the mall. She came straight to us.” “Manisha, come on, say thank you. Say, ‘thank you for rescuing my hair’s reputation.’” Manisha (softly, smiling awkwardly): “Thank you…” “There we go! Grateful and humble. We love it.” “So Vivek, what’s the plan? Chop it all off? Give her a pixie? Or just burn it down and start over?”

Vivek shrugs playfully.
“Let’s see what we’re dealing with. But definitely taking off some emotional baggage today—one strand at a time.” “Wah! Emotional baggage removal services, only on Morning Madness Radio!” “Manisha, should we do it? Should we fix this mop?” “Oh wait, too late—you’re here!”
Tania laughs loudly at her own joke. Manisha chuckles faintly, but she’s already regretting sitting so close to the mic. Her voice feels small in this big, echoing studio. Tania suddenly stands. “Okay, enough foreplay. It’s TIME!”

🎧 [Cue drumroll]
“Manisha, go take your throne. That chair in the center—it’s tall, dramatic, and just slightly uncomfortable. Like all great transformations.”
Manisha walks slowly toward the big salon chair placed under the studio lights. The cushion is high, her knees barely reach the edge. As she climbs in, her feet dangle above the ground, swinging like a child’s.
Manisha (nervously chuckling): “My feet aren’t touching the ground… I feel like a kid about to get scolded.”
Vivek is already beside her, flicking open a folded cape. It’s a deep charcoal grey, made of thick, slick synthetic fabric with a slight sheen—like a waterproof curtain at a carwash. The edges are frayed from years of use, and there’s a quiet gravity to it.
The cape has a history. A hundred heads. A thousand fallen strands. It’s seen brides, breakups, reinventions, and regrets. Today, it gets Manisha.
Vivek swings it around her with a flourish, lets it settle heavy on her shoulders, and pulls it snug around her neck—almost too snug. The cape closes in, like a cocoon. Manisha inhales lightly—but the pressure of the cape makes it feel shallower. She can’t move her arms now. Her breath is tight. She suddenly feels sealed in. Tania raises her voice with delight.

“And there she is—wrapped, trapped, and ready to be clipped!” “How’re you feeling, Manisha? You’ve got a stylist in black, scissors in hand, and a mic next to your mouth. How nervous are you getting a haircut from a nai live on FM radio?”
Manisha opens her mouth to speak, but—Tania turns straight to the listeners: “WAIT! Don’t answer yet! Listeners—do you think Manisha is nervous? Look at her feet dangling! Look at her eyes darting! Text us your answer RIGHT now—‘Yes’ or ‘Absolutely Yes!’”

🎧 [Sound effect: buzzing clippers powering on]
“Because folks, the cape is on, the clock is ticking… and the scissors are just a breath away.”

🎵 [Background track fades to a hush]
RJ Tania (excitedly):
“Alright, the cape is ON, the stylist is ready, and our brave—or possibly very confused—participant Manisha is seated in the transformation chair.” “But before we snip, clip, and flip… let’s hear from YOU. Yes, we’ve got live callers ready to weigh in on what should happen to Manisha’s… let’s call it situation.”

🎧 [Studio line rings – beep – click]
Tania (grinning): “Hello hello, you’re on air with RJ Tania! Who’s this?”
Caller 1 (laughing): “Hi, I’m Neha from Karol Bagh!” “Nehaaaa! Welcome to the madness. Now tell me, did you hear our girl Manisha’s story? The heartbreak, the hair, the hope?”
Neha: “Yeah, poor girl. But honestly… her hair sounds like it’s seen better decades.”

🎧 [Audience laughter SFX]
Tania (mock gasping): “Neha! SAVAGE! Manisha is right here. You should see her face—it’s gone from soft beige to mild panic in seconds!”
Neha: “Give her something bold, Tania. Like… a sharp bob. Something to scream ‘I’m single and dangerous’.” “Ooooh! I love that energy. Bob cut—Manisha, what do you think?”
Manisha (quietly): “Um… maybe not too short…”
“Aww, did you hear that? She squeaked. Neha, you’ve made her nervous and I love it! Thanks for calling in, darling!”
🎧 [Call ends – next line rings]
Tania: “Line two—who’s with us?”

Caller 2 (male voice, teasing): “Hi, this is Rahul from Gurgaon. Just give her a buzz cut and get it over with!”
🎧 [LOUD laughter SFX]
Tania (laughing hysterically): “A BUZZ CUT! Rahuuul, you’re evil! A full-on military academy look—straight into heartbreak bootcamp!”
Rahul: “Just imagine the reaction if she walks into her office on Monday with a shaved head.”
“Honestly? She might end up walking out instead. Manisha, you okay? Your eyes say ‘no,’ your soul says ‘RUN.’”
🎧 [Call ends]
Manisha is stiff in the chair now. Her face is pale, her fingers are tightly curled under the cape, invisible to everyone—but she’s clenching. Her feet are still dangling. And the buzzing in her ears is no longer from the radio.
Tania leans toward her mic again, still smiling but with that sly bite in her voice.
“Listeners, you should SEE her face. She’s gone quiet like a student before a board exam. Should’ve thought this through before participating, sweetie. Now the scissors are in the room.”
RJ Tania swivels back to stylist Vivek, who is already cracking his knuckles dramatically.
“Okay, Captain Vivek, enough fun. Let’s talk business. What’s the strategy here?”
Vivek (picking up the spray bottle):
“First, let’s tame this frizz jungle.”
He raises the water spray bottle and, with little warning, starts misting Manisha’s hair. The cool water hits her scalp sharply. He sprays fast, almost rough, flattening the top of her head, then runs his fingers through, tugging slightly.
“Head down, please.”
He presses her head forward—not cruelly, but firmly. She bends. Her neck stiffens under the pressure. Her breath tightens under the snug cape again.
Vivek grabs the shears—large, shiny—and without further warning, lifts a section from the back and—
✂️ SNIP SNIP SNIP
Three thick inches fall in one quick motion. The damp hair lands with a thud on the cape, curling slightly before resting.
Manisha stays frozen, head bowed. It’s real now.
Tania jumps in immediately.
“WHOA! There it is! The first cut of the day—three inches gone just like her ex! But honestly, Vivek…”
She leans closer, eyes narrowing.
“…this doesn’t even feel like anything’s been chopped. Her hair’s so dry, it might grow back out of spite.”
Vivek (calmly):
“That was just the start. A rough clean-up. But you’re right—it’s barely made a dent.”
“Exactly! You need to BUTCH it. Like, full ten-inch trauma therapy. Give her hair a proper heartbreak lesson.”
🎧 [Gasps + drumroll SFX]
“Manisha, are you ready? Because I don’t think we are. But someone’s gotta do it!”

🎧 [Snipping fades out. A beat of silence follows, filled only by the hum of studio equipment.]
Vivek (coolly):
“You know what, Tania? You’re way too excited sitting over there making commentary. Why don’t you make the next chop?”
Tania’s eyes light up like a kid in a candy store.
“What?! ME? Don’t play with me, Vivek.”
Vivek, already holding the scissors, turns to her with a smirk.
“No jokes. Come on. You look scissor-hungry. Like a villain in a beauty pageant.”
🎧 [Sound effect: ting of metal scissors handed over]
Tania jumps up, practically bouncing toward the chair.
“Okay LISTENERS, HISTORY is about to be made! RJ Tania is picking up the scissors for the first time ever on air—and someone’s hair is about to pay the price.”
She holds the scissors up proudly like a trophy, waving them in front of the mic.
“I feel so powerful. Like a goddess of change. Or a very fashionable serial killer.”
🎧 [Audience laugh SFX]
She looks at Manisha, who’s still bent forward, still silent, still stunned from the first cut. A few stray damp strands stick to her cheek.
Tania grins wickedly.
“Manisha… you’ve officially become my canvas. And sweetie, if I mess this up, just tell people it’s abstract art.”
Manisha forces a small laugh, but the color has drained slightly from her face. There’s no mirror in front of her. She can’t see what’s happening. Only feel it. Only hear them. And the scissors now in Tania’s hand.
Tania steps behind her, giddy, trying to position her fingers. But the hair slips. Vivek calmly intervenes.
“Wait—Tania, hold the scissors like this. And grip the hair, not like you’re holding a flower bouquet. Be firm.”
Tania rolls her eyes playfully.
“Fine, Mr. Perfectionist.”
She slides her hand under the damp section of Manisha’s hair, then wraps her fingers tight around it. Her grip is rougher than expected. Her nails press against Manisha’s scalp as she yanks the section taut.
Manisha’s head jerks slightly—Tania doesn’t notice. Or maybe she does. She leans forward and whispers, half-laughing.
“Look down.”
Manisha lowers her head again. The cape shifts slightly around her neck, stiff from damp hair and pressure.
“No no, look fully down. Eyes on the floor. And listen carefully, Manisha—if you look up… I swear… I’ll cut more.”
🎧 [Gasp SFX]
“In fact, our listeners would love that, wouldn’t you? Should we take off another inch if she dares to peek?”
She turns to the mic: “Text us now—Should we chop more if she blinks wrong? Type ‘More’ and hit send!” Vivek chuckles behind them, arms folded.
“I think you missed your calling, Tania. You don’t want to host shows—you want to run a barbershop interrogation room.”
Tania laughs, still gripping Manisha’s wet hair.
“I just like results, Vivek. And this girl right here? She’s gonna walk out lighter. In hair, in heartbreak, and possibly dignity.”
Manisha’s breath is tight. Her head is bowed low, the cape wrapped tight across her chest. Her heart is racing. The scissors are hovering. She doesn’t speak. She doesn’t dare.

🎧 [Light static, then silence. The kind that feels heavy. Anticipation buzzes in the room.]
Tania, scissors in hand, leans over Manisha’s bowed head. The section of hair in her grip is damp, tightly pulled, trembling slightly.
RJ Tania (grinning):
“Okay… here we go… for all the people listening in their cars, on their coffee breaks, hiding from their bosses—this one’s for you.”
The blades open. Slide in. Press.
✂️ SNAP.
A solid chunk of Manisha’s hair—almost five inches—comes away in Tania’s hand. The cut is uneven. The ends frayed from the rushed grip. But it’s gone. That section of her hair… gone.
Tania holds it up like a trophy. A thick, wet bundle of dark hair dangling between her fingers. The transformation has truly begun.
Tania bursts into laughter.
“OH. MY. GOD!”
🎧 [Crowd cheer SFX]
“LISTENERS. It’s DONE. I have actual Manisha hair in my hand!”
She turns to Manisha’s bowed head and waves the cut strand near her face.
“This was attached to you just 10 seconds ago. And now… it’s mine.”
Manisha doesn’t move. She can’t. She hears the crowd effect, the buzz of the mic, the sounds of celebration—but her shoulders are tense. Her chest feels tighter under the cape.
She isn’t sure whether to laugh or cry. So she does neither. She just blinks, eyes fixed on the studio floor.
Tania raises the cut hair up once more—then theatrically lets it fall.
🎧 [Soft sound of damp hair hitting the floor]
“There it goes! Goodbye sadness, goodbye split ends, goodbye… whatever that phase of life was!”
She brushes her hands off like she’s finished some exhausting art project.
“Whew! That felt amazing. I’m telling you, this is better than retail therapy.”
Meanwhile, Manisha stares down, lips pressed together. That was her hair. She remembers the last time she had cut it that short—years ago. And now it’s on the studio floor, swept into showbiz.
Why did I come? Why did I send that message? Why does it feel like I’m disappearing in front of everyone, one inch at a time? She doesn’t say a word. But she doesn’t have to.

Tania turns back to the mic, still laughing, unaware—or perhaps half-aware—of what she’s just stirred.
“Okay Vivek, your turn again. But I’m telling you, next breakup, I’m opening a salon. This feeling is addictive.”

🎧 [Scissors click softly as Vivek takes them back from Tania, eyes focused, posture relaxed—like an artist ready to continue what someone else started.]
Vivek (dryly): “Okay, enough amateur hour. Time to clean this mess up.” He parts another thick section, lifts it, and without hesitation—
✂️ SNIP SNIP SNIP.
Three more inches fall. Then five. Then another. The sound is crisp, quick, cold. Strands tumble like autumn leaves—some landing on the floor, others sliding down the heavy grey cape and settling in folds around Manisha’s lap like fallen feathers. One thick piece clings to the edge of her shoulder, just in view.

Tania leans in dramatically and picks it up between two fingers. “What’s this? Another piece of your past, Manisha? Looks like it just gave up and jumped.”
🎧 [Audience laughter SFX]
She gently places it back onto the cape, arranging it with theatrical flair like setting a table.
“There. Let’s decorate this cloth coffin of yours properly.”
Manisha shifts slightly beneath the cape, uncomfortable. She’s trying not to react, but the weight of her own hair collecting around her… the sensation of strands falling against her arms, her shoulders, even the back of her neck… it’s beginning to make her heart race.
Vivek presses her head down again.
Tania, cheerful as ever, leans into the mic.
“Listeners, her head is almost in her lap. At this point, it’s less a haircut, more a humble apology to her follicles!”
“Manisha, sweetheart, what’s going on in that little head of yours? Say something to the world. How are you feeling right now?”
There’s a pause. Manisha exhales and gathers her voice. It’s small, but sincere.
Manisha (softly):
“It’s… strange. I feel like… I’m watching something end.”
Tania raises an eyebrow and immediately pounces.
“Watching something end? Girl, it’s YOUR hair. You’re not the audience—you’re the VICTIM.”
🎧 [Laughter SFX]
“Also, who says that on the radio? You sound like you’re narrating a funeral documentary!”
Manisha blushes under the weight of the cape, the scissors, the lights. She tries to smile, to make it all okay—but her jaw tightens again.
Another large chunk drops to the floor. Vivek is moving fast now, slicing layer after layer. Hair is gathering all over—the cape now looks like a rug in progress, and the floor beneath the chair is littered with wet, chopped strands.
Tania crouches down, picks up a particularly long piece, holds it up to the mic like a prize.
“This one? Probably from when she still had hope in that relationship. Say goodbye, listeners! Bye-bye unresolved emotional dependency!”
🎧 [Wave SFX]
She plops it onto the heap already on the cape, patting it gently.
“You’re really wearing your past now, Manisha. And it’s not flattering.”
Vivek pauses and brushes her shoulder clean with his hand. More hair falls. Manisha bites her lip. She’s surrounded—cocooned in the cape, silenced by the mic, dismantled by the scissors.
She can feel the cape tightening with every snip—not physically, but emotionally. The more hair that lands, the heavier it feels.
Tania leans into her one last time, smiling sweetly.
“So, Manisha… any regrets yet?”
Manisha (barely audible): “…Maybe.” Tania gasps. “Maybe?! Oof, imagine how your ex feels then. He probably dodged a bullet.”
🎧 [Studio laughter SFX. Manisha’s silence speaks louder now.]

🎧 [Low background beat plays — dramatic, building up like the final lap of a race]
RJ Tania (into the mic): “Alright, folks. You heard the scissors, you felt the tension—we are officially more than halfway through Manisha’s transformation.” “Let me tell you, her hair is now sitting right below the shoulders, and honestly… this is the best it’s looked since she walked in looking like a lost library intern.”

She turns dramatically toward the camera for the livestream.
“The floor is carpeted with hair, the cape is buried in layers of emotional residue, and her expression is… well, somewhere between shocked silence and internal screaming.”
Vivek, still working swiftly, runs a comb through the front of Manisha’s damp hair. He pauses, looks at the mirror—not to check with her, but to check the symmetry. Then—he tilts her chin upward. “Look up.” Before she can ask why— ✂️ SNIP SNIP SNIP.

A large, blunt chunk of hair falls forward and lands directly in her lap. Short. Thick. Uneven. Cut straight across her forehead.
Bangs. Just like that. No warning. No permission. Manisha’s eyes widen. But she says nothing. She only stares at the thick strands sitting lifeless in her lap. It feels like someone just edited her face without asking. Tania gasps, then claps. “WHOA! Vivek just went for it! Listeners—she has BANGS now. Just like that. He didn’t even ask. This is straight-up emotional assault with scissors!”
🎧 [Laughter SFX]
Vivek (nonchalantly): “I mean… what was I gonna do? Leave that forehead exposed to the public?”
Tania chuckles hard, leaning into the mic again.
“He’s doing charity work at this point. Honestly, Manisha should be paying us for saving her face.”
Manisha blinks rapidly, trying not to let anything fall from her eyes—but something already has. A tiny clump of freshly chopped fringe lands on her nose, another on her cheek. She closes her eyes as more fine strands tickle her skin.

Vivek grabs a smaller comb and starts brushing the bangs downward and out. His movements are quick, mechanical.
“Close your eyes. You don’t want the mess in them too.” She already has. She’s frozen behind her lids. The cape now feels heavier than ever, like a trap. The short, itchy bits of fringe cling to her skin, and she has no way to brush them off. Her hands are buried under the cloth, helpless. Tania tilts her head, observing with mock concern. “Manisha, you okay? You’ve gone quiet. This silence is giving… shock absorption mode.” Vivek smirks. “She’s processing the new version of herself. Might take a while.” “Or maybe she’s thinking about how she’ll explain this to her mother,” Tania adds, laughing.

🎧 [Cue exaggerated “DUN DUN DUUUN” SFX]
A few final snips. The bangs are cleaned. Manisha still hasn’t spoken. Her lashes flutter, and she exhales slowly—but her heart is pounding.

Tania leans into the mic again, voice hushed now, almost conspiratorial.
🎧 [Soft static fade-in, like the calm after chaos]
“Listeners… we are witnessing the rebirth of a woman live on air. Manisha 2.0 has officially downloaded.”
Vivek spins the chair ever so slightly, angling her toward the mirror, but not fully. He doesn’t want her to see everything just yet. With a flourish, he dusts the tiny clippings off her forehead, the comb tapping lightly against her temple like a gavel sealing the verdict.
“Done.” His tone is flat, but final.
Manisha opens her eyes slowly, lashes trembling, and catches only fragments of her reflection between the studio lights—her fringe, shorter than she’s ever dared, framing her face with an authority she didn’t ask for. Her lips part, but no sound escapes.
Tania, still half-playing to the listeners, half-reading the rawness in Manisha’s expression, softens her tone:
“Breathe, babe. It’s only hair… and maybe a new personality you weren’t planning on.”
🎧 [Cue light chuckle track, fading quickly into silence]
Vivek rests his scissors on the counter with a casual clink. “She’ll thank me in a month. Or ten years. Either way, I did her a favor.”
The silence after that stretches—long enough for the faint hum of the soundboard to creep into awareness. Manisha finally exhales, a sound that’s almost a laugh, almost a sob.
Tania taps her pen against the desk, giving the listeners the line they’re waiting for:
“And that, ladies and gentlemen, concludes today’s on-air transformation. One woman, one pair of scissors, zero consent forms.”
🎧 [Applause SFX, fading into the outro music]
The red ON AIR sign dims. Manisha sits perfectly still, cape heavy, bangs grazing her lashes. She hasn’t said a word yet. Vivek leans closer, voice dropping so only she can hear: “You’ll get used to it. They always do.” Tania straightens in her chair, flipping her cue cards with a grin.
“Listeners, if you loved this chaos—guess what? We’re making it a thing. Starting next week, we’ll launch a weekly haircut-on-air series. Random brave souls from our audience, live in this very studio. And if you want to actually watch the madness, we might even go live on Instagram. Snips, screams, and split ends—all yours to witness.”

🎧 [Upbeat sting music]
Vivek smirks, already cleaning his scissors.
“Yeah. Let’s see who’s next to sit in the hot seat. Applications open now.”
The red ON AIR light clicks off. A silence follows that isn’t for the listeners—it’s only for the room.
Manisha exhales at last, a tremor escaping with it. The cape feels suffocating, her arms numb under its weight. Her new bangs itch against her skin, taunting her each time she blinks. She finally whispers to herself, so low neither Tania nor Vivek catch it:
“Why did I let them do this? Why didn’t I speak? … What am I going to tell Ma?”
Her thoughts spiral, unspooling faster than she can contain them:
They were laughing… everyone was laughing… and I just sat here. Like a prop. Like a joke.
What if they never take me seriously again? What if this haircut isn’t just hair, but the start of people deciding who I am for me?
I should’ve stopped him. I should’ve said something. But the cape… the scissors… the microphone… it all pinned me down. I froze. And now it’s too late. Her eyes flicker back to the floor, where strands of her old self lie scattered like secrets exposed. She swallows hard, the studio air too thick to breathe. “Maybe it’ll grow out. Maybe I’ll grow out of this too. But right now… I feel like I’ve lost more than hair.”
