 Welcome Back

One by one, the cheer team started to return from their break.  For many of them, a visit with Heather was near the top of the list of things they needed to do upon their return.

“My folks were shocked!” Janie exclaimed, “So were all my friends.”

“Well, it is a pretty big change.”

“Even my previous cut probably would have been a big adjustment.  This was almost too much to handle.”  Janie continued.

“You know, I ended up wearing a wig during the entire break last year.” Katie reminded everyone. Her head was already freshly shaved by Evan, as it had been nearly every day during the break.

“Yeah, I should have eased everyone into it.”  Janie admitted.  “Honestly, I never even thought of it.”

“Our parents freaked out.” Jenny stated.

“But it helped that we both did it.”  Jessie finished.  They both turned towards each other and giggled while rubbing each other’s heads.

“So, are you two doing the twin thing again?” Katie inquired.

“Well…” Jenny started.

“Not completely.” Jessie added.

“We are twins, and nothing will ever change that.”

“Even though right now, we’re back to looking the same again.”

“We’re also happy.”

“And our boyfriends like it.”

“They especially like that we look the same again.”

“And we want to please them.”

“Since they will be around the team a lot.”

“But we also enjoyed out independence.”

“And want that to continue.”

“So, we have a plan.”

“If we dress the same.”

“We still want to be a little different.”

“Like a color or style or whatever.”

“But we also won’t worry about changing anything, if we happen to end up dressing the same.”

“Sorry, Katie.  We know how much you loved that trick.” They both said in unison.  When they first cut their hair and initially strived to be different, their twin brains kept having them dress the same. It was Katie that suggested they each change a different part of their clothing to differentiate themselves, and that was something they employed regularly.

“Oh, don’t worry about that.  I’m just glad you seem to have things figured out.” Katie addressed them both.

Praise and Progress

Elsa had used the break to self-reflect.  It had been a little over a month since she lost her bangs, her security blanket.  While she was horrified, initially, she had adapted and adjusted.  When she met with Heather earlier, she let Heather know what she had decided.

“Thank you, Heather.” Elsa began.

“Oh, I haven’t done anything yet.”  Heather responded.

“No, not for now.  I wanted to thank you for shaving my bangs.”  Elsa replied.

“That was a total accident!”  Heather apologized.  “I promise I’m getting better.”

“No, you don’t understand.  My bangs were holding me back.  I was very attached to them.  I have had them all my life.  Did you know that my hair used to be down to my waist?”

“Yeah.  Everyone’s hair used to be long.”  Heather rubbed her stubbly head in reflection.  “Everyone looks so much better now, though.”

“I agree.”  Elsa smiled. “I would have shaved my head a lot sooner, if it wasn’t for my bangs.  And if it wasn’t for you, I’d still have them.”

“I feel bad enough…” Heather said softly.

“But Heather, it’s a good thing.”  Elsa explained.  “I was very upset at first, but I’ve had time to reflect.  I went home and tried to figure out what to do.  It took some time, but this may have been the best thing to happen to me.”  She continued, “I called the modeling agency, the one that Jenny’s friend set me up with after the calendar photo shoot.  I met with them last week.  They loved my look and signed me on the spot.”  Elsa informed, trying to contain her excitement.

“That’s great, Elsa!” Heather exclaimed.

“Yeah, so, obviously, I’m keeping this up.  Do you mind adding me to your daily shave list?”  Elsa pleaded.

“Of course I will take care of you!  I would love to!”  Heather was excited.  She picked up the cream, sprayed it onto Elsa’s head, and got to work.

Down to Business
Later that evening, everyone was gathered in the living room for a team meeting.  For now, it was just the girls and Coach Beth, but the boys would be joining the team soon.

Heather had cycled through the entire team, and everyone seemed genuinely happy.  Shandra, however, had accepted her bald fate.  Since the rest of the team was bald as well, it didn’t seem like that big of a deal anymore. She had plopped down in her usual chair, wearing an open vest over her sports bra and a pair of capris.  In fact, she now considered herself a trend setter and insisted that everyone was set on copying her.

Elsa was on the couch, in a bright green camisole and plaid pajama pants.  She was seated next to Jenny, who she owed a great deal of thanks to for the modeling contract.  Jenny was in a blue T-shirt and red athletic shorts, and she sat in between Elsa and her twin, Jessie.  Jessie was dressed in exact opposite of Jenny, in a red T-shirt and blue athletic shorts.

Annie, in a dark blue button-down crop top and jeans, was on the recliner.  She felt self-conscious about her bald head and the trip home did not help matters.  She felt secure around the team, she was glad that she took part in the fundraiser, but she did not see herself sticking with the look long term.  She was happy for her fellow seniors, Emma and Elsa, who had both adapted well.  They had secured jobs post-graduation that would allow them to maintain the freedom of expression with their lack of hair, but she might not be as lucky.

Anna, Janie, and Heather were on another couch.  Heather was now fully comfortable in her new look.  She was proud of how she looked, gained more confidence daily, and wore a dark orange bandeau top and denim short shorts.  Anna was in a yellow blouse and yoga pants.  Janie, who was sandwiched between the two, dressed identical to Anna and tried to match her in every way.

“Alright, everyone welcome back.”  Emma stood in the front of the room, in a tie-dyed sports bra and bike shorts.  “I hope you all had a chance to recharge, and you are ready to get to work.”  She scanned the room and smiled at all the freshly shaved heads in front of her.  To think a year ago, this group looked like any other typical group of collage age girls.  Outside of Katie, who already had her mohawk, not one of the cheerleaders could have anticipated how they’d all look now.  For the most part, they all enjoyed it.  Of course, there was still Melissa, who stuck out with her blonde lob.  While the rest of the team, well, there wasn’t a trace of hair anywhere on their heads.  “The boys will be joining us next week, but before they do, we have a few minor points of business to attend to.”

“I’m sure you all know about the big captain vote coming up, but that won’t be the only vote to take place.”  Emma continued, then smiled at Heather.  “If you didn’t know, Heather and I didn’t go home.  We both ended up staying here the entire break.  We had some good conversations and there have been some developments.”

Everyone turned towards Heather, who blushed at the attention.  However, she was ready to campaign for her ideas and smiled back at the thought of how much things had changed for her.

“I also don’t want to spoil anyone else’s announcement, but I believe our fundraisers have been hugely successful.”  Emma continued.  “Jenny?  Anna? Is there anything that either of you want to add?”

“There are a few calendars left, if any of you know anyone that’s interested.”  Jenny informed the group.  “I have heard that people are very pleased!”

“How about the fact that almost none of the photos are accurate anymore?”  Annie piped in.

“Yeah, well, we did know that it could be the case.  Maybe next year we’ll plan a bit differently.”  Jenny responded.

“So, on that note… You guys are all amazing!  And I REALLY hope that you all are enjoying your new looks because they aren’t going anywhere.  At least not until after the competition.”  Anna cut in.

“Does that mean…?” Jenny started to ask.

“Yup!”  Anna confirmed.  “Get used to those daily shaves, ladies!”  Anna turned towards Heather. “I guess you’re going to be very busy.  Do you think you’ll need any help?”  Anna looked towards the rest of the room.

“No, that’s okay.”  Heather grinned.  “I don’t mind at all.  In fact, I am always available.  Just let me know and I’m happy to clean up anyone who asks.”

“Of course, this is mainly for those who participated.  Everyone else is free to do as they choose.”  Anna admitted.

“I already informed Heather that I’ll be joining in on the daily shaves.”  Elsa told the group.

“I’m sticking it out as long as my sister, and everyone else, is.  Team unity and all.”  Jessie added.

“Ugh, can we please just get on with it?!”  Melissa shouted out.  Ever averse to clothing, she was in a tiny bralette and booty shorts.  “Surely there’s more to discuss than everyone’s hair, or rather lack thereof.”  Melissa whined.  “You’re all just waiting until I shave my head too, aren’t you?”  She stood up.  “Aren’t you!”  Just before she could run off, Coach Beth intervened.

“Okay, Melissa. Please relax.  Nobody is putting ANY pressure on you.”  Coach Beth assured her.  “Don’t worry, your hair is safe.  I will personally make sure of it.”  Coach Beth subconsciously reached for her own long hair, which was in its usual ponytail.

“But Coach…” Melissa trailed off.

“That’s enough, Melissa.”  Coach Beth stood firm and pointed back towards Melissa’s seat, then turned towards Emma.  “Let’s move on.”

Emma turned her attention back towards the group.  “So, like Coach said, you all still have free will and the choice to do as you wish with your hair… but most of you chose this and many of you made a commitment.”  Shandra raised her hand, without looking up from her phone, and Emma addressed her situation without pausing for any other input.  “Shandra, you made your own choices as well, and you WERE given a choice on this.  So yes, this applies to you, too.”  Shandra dropped her hand.  “Now, I have an announcement that is related to this, but I think we’ll save it for later.”  Emma looked towards Heather, “As long as that’s ok with you?”

“Um, yeah, sure.”  Heather looked at Emma and then glanced at the rest of the room.  “Well, which thing are you referring to?  We discussed a lot.”

Emma winked at Heather, and then smiled as she addressed the group, “How would you all like new uniforms?”  The group murmured and discussed quickly amongst themselves.  “As I started to say before, our fundraisers were hugely successful.  Not only do we already have most of our expenses covered, but there’s some extra left over.  Heather, is there anything you wanted to add?”

“Wait, this was Heather’s idea?”  Melissa questioned, as she rolled her eyes, “Oh, God…”

Heather stood up and walked towards the front of the room.  “Um, I wasn’t really expecting this…”

“It’s okay, I’ll help you.”  Emma wrapped her arm around Heather’s shoulder.  “So, we got to talking and thought that maybe our uniforms could use an upgrade.  We’ll be able to debut them at the competition and then they would continue to be our uniforms going forward.”

“What exactly are these new uniforms going to look like?”  Melissa challenged.

“Well, we’re still figuring that out.  But if you have any ideas, we’ll certainly listen.”  Emma answered.  “I think you and Heather are on the same page with this though, at least in terms of style.”

“So, um, I know how this sounds coming from me… But we all look so good, and work hard, and I think that should be on display.  Let’s be honest, none of us…” she paused, looking over at Melissa, “Well, most of us, don’t have hair to whip and toss around anymore.  But we have other assets that are just as valuable.”  Heather grew more confident with each word she spoke.  As if for emphasis, she stood in superhero pose, with her legs spread and her hands on her hips.  She puffed her chest out, highlighting the abs that were emerging.  As if she didn’t already have half of the team jealous of her good looks, this certainly emphasized it more.

“Wow! She looks amazing.” Katie whispered to Betty, gently elbowing her in the ribs.

“Yeah…” Betty replied distracted.

“I don’t think we need to vote on this right now.  I know we need some time to research and find the right style, but if anyone has any objections, I’ll certainly take those now.”  Emma scanned the room to gauge the interest, but everyone seemed to be on board.  “Alright, Thanks Heather.” Heather headed back to her seat on the couch.  “We can’t wait too long though, as it will take some time to order the new uniforms, and we want to make sure we get them in time.”

“Psst! I need to talk with you later.”  Anna whispered to Heather as she sat back down.

A Big Announcement

“Should we have the vote now?” Emma queried.  “I know I mentioned before everyone left for break that we’d need a new captain for next season.  I’ll still be here and will see us through the competition, but I think it’s important that we get a head start on things.”

“I’d like to nominate Katie!”  Betty’s hand shot up almost immediately after Emma finished.

“Thanks, Betty.”  Emma replied.  “Is there a second?”

“Wait.” Katie stood up.  “Hold on.”  Katie took a deep breath.  “I wasn’t planning on saying this just yet, but I guess I have no choice.”  Everyone looked at Katie, wondering what she was about to say.  “You know that I love you guys.  This team is amazing and you’re all like my second family.  The past two and a half years have been the best of my life.  Particularly this past year.”  She smiled as she rubbed her bald head and looked at everyone else’s as well.  “I am so honored by the nomination, but I can’t be your captain next year.”  Katie started to tear up.  “This is so hard…”  She managed to squeak out as her voice cracked.

“Katie, what’s wrong?”  Betty asked, genuinely concerned for her friend.

“I… I’m not going to be here next year.”  Katie continued, as the entire team gasped.  “I’m not even going to finish out the semester.  I’ll be leaving right after the competition is over.”

“What’s going on Katie?  Why are you leaving?”  Emma inquired.

“Evan is moving, and I’ll be going with him.”  Katie took a deep breath and decided to just get it all out.  “He’s actually leaving a lot sooner than I am.  He’s just back to wrap up things at the shop and get everything in order.  I was all set to leave with him, but we both agreed I should stay and help you guys win that competition.  It’s actually the only reason I came back after the break.  As soon as the competition is over, I’ll be leaving.  I’m sorry, I know you all have a lot of questions, and I’ll try to answer as many as I can, but not right now…”  She paused.  “I didn’t want this to come out this way, but I felt that I owed you all an explanation as to why I can’t be your captain.  I am truly honored though.”  Afterwards, she stood still for a moment to let it all soak in.  Then she started to sit back down but thought of something else to add and continued to speak.  “I’m not going to vote or participate, because honestly it wouldn’t be fair.  However, I will say that I would recommend Betty because I think she’d do a fabulous job.”  She finally sat back down and smiled at Betty, who stared at her with her mouth wide open.

There was a stunned silence in the room, as everyone processed all the things Katie had just said.  After what felt like an eternity Heather spoke up.  “I’ll second the nomination for Betty.”

“Um, thanks.” Betty slowly responded.  “I, uh, I’m honored, but I can’t accept…”  Then Betty rounded on Katie, “You’re leaving!?”

“Yeah, I’m sorry.  This isn’t how I wanted everyone to find out.”  Katie confessed.

Betty continued to stare at Katie, but then she remembered the team needed the rest of her answer, and she snapped out of it.  “Yeah, so I’m really not a leader.  I love this team, but I don’t think that I would be a good captain.  I’ll support and help whoever is captain though, as best as I am able, anyway.”

“Okaaaay…” Emma interjected, “So, is there anyone who does want to be captain?”

“I’ll do it.” Shandra said nonchalantly.

“Thanks, Shandra, but you’re still ineligible.”  Emma scolded.

“Well, someone needs to do it.”  Shandra huffed as she went back to her phone.  “Just tell me when it’s time to vote.”

“Okay, Shandra.”  Emma grimaced, while turning her attention back towards the group.  Janie’s hand slowly went up.  “Yes, Janie?”

“Well, I’d like to nominate Anna.”  Janie said timidly, as she lowered her hand.

“I’ll second!” Heather shouted enthusiastically, grinning at her couch mates.

“Anna, do you accept?”  Emma looked over at the potential triumvirate.  “You’ve certainly proven your leadership recently with this fundraiser.”

“Well, okay.”  Anna agreed reluctantly.  “As long as I can have help.”

“Great!” Emma declared.  “I’m sure you’ll get plenty of help.  In fact, I’m certain that Heather and Janie will gladly assist.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll help you, too.”  Betty reassured Anna.

“Well, just to be sure we don’t leave anyone out.  Does anyone else want to throw their hat in the ring?”  Emma glanced around the room, and no one budged.  “Okay, then. Since it seems Anna is running unopposed, I’ll cast one ceremonial vote.”  She headed over towards Anna.  “Congratulations, to our new Captain, ANNA!”  The entire team clapped as Anna stood up.  Emma hugged her and then took Anna’s seat on the couch.  Janie and Heather both hugged Anna and congratulated her, as did the rest of the room.

After a few minutes of congratulatory hugs, Anna headed towards the front of the room.  “I, um, I guess you guys are all looking for some kind of speech.” Anna began.  “I really don’t know what to say.  This is all a bit unexpected.  I honestly was not looking to be captain, but I promise, I will give this my all and I won’t let you down.”  Anna paused.  “Honestly, I think we’ve had a pretty good year so far, so let’s just stick with what works.  I will be relying on all of you to deliver, since we know that there’s no “I” in team.  I’m sure I’ll have more to say later, but for now, I’m sorry, I’m still processing!”  Anna headed back towards the couch and switched spots again with Emma.

“Alright, Anna.  Congratulations, and I look forward to working with you going forward.”  Emma reiterated as she stepped back to the front of the room.  “So, last thing I’ll say for tonight is that going forward we will be a team of 15.  Jenny’s and Jessie’s boyfriends, Tim and Tate, will be joining us.  I think most of you are familiar with them.  They’ve been to the house a few times.  Girls, is there anything you want to add?  Do you know anything about our third guy?  I think is his name is Franklin?”

“Yeah, our boyfriends are super excited to join the team.”  Jenny began.

“Plus, it’s a great way for us to keep an eye on them and make sure they stay out of trouble.”  Jessie added.  They both turned towards each other and giggled.  “And all you girls better keep your hands off them.  They’re all ours.”  They smiled as they mock-glared at their teammates.

“But Franklin’s available.” Jenny added.  “As far as I know anyway.”

“Yeah, he’s tall, muscular…” Jessie described.

“And crazy rich.” Jenny continued.

“Oh my God! I think I know him.  I’ve seen him around campus.  He’s SOOOO HOT!”  Melissa swooned.  “He’s joining our team, too?  That’s awesome!”  Suddenly, she was very interested in everything that was happening.

“That’s great, girls, but this is going to be a lot of hard work.  This isn’t a dating service.”

“Yeah, but a lot of time together, in close quarters…  Working out, sweat dripping everywhere…”  Melissa trailed off.

“Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.”  Emma looked over at Couch Beth who simply shrugged.  “Well, I guess we’ll see how this goes.  Just promise me you’ll behave and not let this be a distraction.”

“Don’t worry about me.  I’ll be good.  Promise.”  Melissa grinned in a way that suggested her words didn’t match her thoughts.

“Oh boy…”  Emma just shook her head.

A Challenge Accepted

Later in the evening, there was a knock on Heather’s door.  “Come in.  It’s open.”  Heather shouted from her bed, while she was laying down relaxing after a busy day.  She sat up as Anna came into the room.  “Oh, hey Anna.  What’s up?  And congrats again!  I think you’ll make a great captain.”

“Thanks.  It really was unexpected.  I hadn’t even thought of running until Janie said my name…”  Anna replied as she sat down in the chair across from Heather.  “So, what’s been going on with you?  Any new developments?”  Anna was curious about something specific but wanted to see what Heather volunteered.

“Oh, nothing major.  I mainly hung around the house over break and spent a lot of time with Emma.”  Heather began.  “Well, you heard about the uniform idea.  There was that, and then there was Emma’s pitch to turn the coach’s cottage into a barbershop.  Oh, you haven’t heard about that yet.  I think that was the other idea that she held off on because of Melissa.”

“A barbershop, huh?  That’s interesting…”  Anna was intrigued but hadn’t received the response she wanted.  “Anything else?”

“Nah, that was pretty much it.”  Heather genuinely didn’t think anything else of importance took place.  “How was your break?”

“Oh, it was good.”  Anna patronized.  “I spent a lot of time on social media.”

“Well, that’s no surprise.  You’re always on social media.”

“Heather.”

“Yes, Anna?”

“I know.”

“You know what?”

“Come on, Heather!”  Anna cut to the chase.  “I know you’ve been posting on your social accounts, and I know you’re blowing up.”  Anna smiled.  “Exactly like I said you would.”

“Oh, well, it was Emma mostly.  I started working out a bit, and Emma decided to film some of them and post them.”

“A bit?”  Anna challenged.  “I’d say it’s more than just a bit.  Plus, I know you posted yourself a few times.”

“Once.”  Heather corrected.  “It was one time.  I was bored and I was curious.  I posted it but haven’t looked at it since.”

“Yeah, well, it might be worth checking out.”  Anna informed.  “You’re gaining followers like crazy.  Just keep posting like you have been.”  She chuckled.  “And occasionally, you should showcase the goods and film more confessionals like you did.  Then I’ll really need to watch my back.”

“Watch your back? Why?”  Heather asked innocently.

“You might end up with more followers than me!”

“Oh, I’m sorry.  I’m not even trying.”

“Yeah, I’m not sure that makes it better.”  Suddenly, Anna had an idea.  “Imagine if you were?”

“I’ve told you Anna, I don’t care about any of that.  Nothing has changed.”

“I know, but Heather, you love this team, right?”

“Of course.”

“And you’d do anything to help and support the team, right?”

“Right…” Heather answered tentatively, unsure where Anna was going.

“So, I have big plans for this team, and part of that is increasing our social media presence.  I can’t do it alone and I think you’re best equipped to help with this aspect of it.”

“I’m not sure I like where this is going…”

“Trust me.  It’s going to be great!”  Anna bounded up and headed for the door.  “We’ll be in touch about this.  Just promise you’ll do whatever I ask.”

“I’m really not sure about all this…” Heather hesitated.

“It’s nothing bad!” Anna scolded.

“Fine!”  Heather had no idea what Anna had in mind, but she was sure she wouldn’t like it.

Great Expectations

“So, I already have a job for you, and I really hope you’ll accept.”  Anna informed Janie.  It was the next morning, and the two young co-eds were in the kitchen having breakfast.

“Sure, Cap, whatever you want.”  Janie giggled at the new nickname that she addressed her best friend by.

“Janie! I told you, I’m still Anna.  Nothing has changed.”  Anna scolded.

“Oh, Anna, I’m just having fun.” Janie ribbed.  “Besides, you earned it.”

“Not yet I haven’t, and frankly, I have a lot to live up to.”  Anna confessed.

At that moment, as if on cue, the front door to the house opened and Emma and Heather entered back from their morning run.  Less than a minute later, the sound of footsteps running up the stairs could be heard.  Soon after that, Emma entered the kitchen and opened the fridge.  She took out the orange juice and poured herself a glass.  She gulped it down and refilled her glass.

“That girl is fast.”  Emma managed to get out between breaths, while pointing off in Heather’s general direction.  “You two are up early.  Is everything okay?”

“Yup.  Everything is great.”  Janie grinned.  “Anna was just about to tell me the new job she has for me.”

“Starting in already, eh?”  Emma smirked.  “I like it.  Glad to see the initiative.  This team is in great hands.”

“I still can’t believe it.  I just never expected any of it.  Especially not yet.”  Anna said.

“Well, I guess you can thank Katie for that.”  Emma started.  “We do need to talk later, so find me some time.” She turned to leave. “I don’t want to keep Heather waiting.”

“Can you check with her about getting us in next?  We’ll both be in my room when we finish eating.”  Anna asked, looking towards Janie who nodded in agreement.

“Sure thing!” Emma replied, already halfway down the hall.

“So, what’s my job gonna be?”  Janie asked eagerly.

“Well, it’s two jobs.  I need you to take over for me.”  Anna started.  “I’m putting you in charge of the team’s social media.  I’m still going to maintain my own pages, but I want to promote the team better and create separate content just for that.  You’ve helped with my account the past few weeks, so I know you’re the perfect person to take this on.”

“Thank you.  I promise not to let you down.”  Janie smiled at the trust her teammate had in her.

“Also, I’m putting you in charge of fundraising.”  Anna continued.  “Not necessarily the fundraising itself, but I want you to oversee everything.”

Janie dropped her jaw in shock.  “Wow.  That’s a huge responsibility.”

“I know, but I think you can handle it.  To be clear, I don’t expect you to run all of the fundraising, just oversee it.  I think the calendar was a really fun idea and I’d like to do it again.  Jenny did a good job with it and hopefully with a little more time it can be even better.  And this,” she rubbed each of their bald heads.  “I think this is sticking around and will officially replace our previous salon day.  We pulled it off, but I expect it to be even bigger and better next year.  But I don’t expect you to take it all on by yourself.”

“So, I guess I shouldn’t plan on growing my hair back out any time soon?”  Janie laughed.

“Were you?”  Anna looked at Janie.

“Nope.” Janie smiled, “But that wasn’t really my point.”  She rubbed her own head.  “Maybe we’ll all end up bald for next year’s calendar.  That would be interesting.”

“We’ll see.”  Anna winked as they both laughed and finished their breakfast.

All Work and No Play

Since the team had come back early and classes had not resumed yet, the team did not have a lot of things going on and they had full access to most of the campus.  So, Emma took full advantage of this.  After having the morning off to finish settling in, the entire team was at the gym for an afternoon of practice.  There was a lot of choreography and most of it was new.  The team was up to the challenge and worked very hard.  It was just the girls, as the guys were not expected to join until the following week.

When the team wasn’t practicing together, they were training on their own or in small groups. Jenny and Jessie were back to working out together.  Heather continued to join them, as she had really gotten into the routine and now enjoyed the gym.  She continued to push them harder than they were used to, but they went along with it.  All the time in the gym, in addition to her daily runs with Emma, and at least 8 head shaves every day, left Heather quite busy. But she loved every minute of her new life.

Heather was also still apprenticing with Evan and taking on an even larger responsibility than she could have imagined.  With Evan leaving soon, he wanted to make sure that all his clients were well taken care of.  He wanted to at least introduce them to Heather and let them decide what they wanted to do.  Heather had already agreed and was all too eager to take on any of Evan’s clients that were interested.

Katie managed to find time to sneak off and see Evan.  Any time she came back to the house she was always freshly shaven, but on especially busy days or when her and Evan’s schedule didn’t line up, Heather was always more than happy to fill in.

Anna spent a lot of time shadowing Emma.  She had her own ideas and was getting more comfortable with the idea of her new role for the next school year.  She was in a unique position, even though she was taking over for Emma, Emma would be moving into the coach role and therefore not actually going anywhere.  Anna was expected to lead the team and make all the major decisions, but Emma would also be right down the path.  Emma expected to be around and way more active than their current coach, Beth, ever was.

Introductions and Rules

Everyone kept busy and the week flew by.  Before long the entire team was once again gathered in the living room.  The room was a little more crowded than usual, as the guys were now officially part of the team.

Jenny and Jessie were on one couch joined by their boyfriends, Tate and Tim.  Janie and Heather were on another couch with Melissa and Elsa.  Annie sat on the third couch with Katie and Betty.  Shandra was in her usual spot, and as typical, she seemed uninterested in anything that was going on.  Franklin made his way to the recliner where he seemed quite comfortable.  Emma was joined at the front of the room by Anna, who was basically there to shadow Emma.  Coach Beth sat off to the side in another chair.

“I’d like to start off by welcoming our newest teammates.  We are happy to have you and thank you for joining us.”  Emma addressed the group.  “If you wouldn’t mind taking a minute, to introduce yourselves.”

Tate and Tim both stood up and started talking in tandem, which the team was already used to as they had all been around the pair enough to understand them, plus they weren’t much different from how Jenny and Jessie acted.

“Hey, so, we’re Tate and Tim, most of you probably know us, as we date Jenny and Jessie.”  They paused to look at their girlfriends seated between them, who were giggling and looking up at them adoringly.

“Um, yeah, so they are why we are here.  They told us you were looking for some guys to join the team.  And we’re happy to do anything that lets us spend more time with them.  Plus, you ladies were there for us all season, so we are happy to repay the favor.”  They sat back down and wrapped their arms around Jenny and Jessie, respectively.

Everyone then turned towards the more mysterious man who had joined their ranks.  Franklin looked at everyone and then slowly got up and stood in front of the group.  His muscles bulged from his almost too tight T-shirt as he took his hand and brushed back his lengthy locks out of his face.  “Hi, my name is Franklin, but please never Frank or Frankie. I’m a Junior.  My buddy Tate over there said you needed strong men to help with your competition coming up.  I’ve never cheered before, but I’m a quick study and I’m only too happy to help out this amazing team.”  He paused as he survived the room.  “I love ya’ll’s looks and there’s no place I’d rather be.”  He then sat back down and reclined in the chair as he looked towards Emma and Anna at the front of the room.

“Well, thanks for that.  We are happy to have you on board.”  Emma praised the boys and then laid out what they could expect.  “So, right off the bat let’s be clear.  You are all full members of the team.  Unfortunately, our house is full, so we can’t give you rooms here.  But you have full access to this house and everything in it.  You are welcome here any time and are expected to attend all meetings, events and practices from this point forward.  Any questions?”

The meeting was quick, as its main purpose was to incorporate the new guys into the team and get everyone comfortable with the new dynamic.  The girls were still expected to do most of the routine and the boys were there mainly to provide extra support and help with the lifting.  Unlike when they were on the sidelines for games where they performed a few quick cheers with an occasional toss, for this competition there would be a lot more acrobatics and a much longer routine than they were used to.  Everyone was expected at the gym early the next morning for the first full practice.  Emma adjourned the meeting, and the team started to disperse, but not everyone was so quick to leave.

“He’s so dreamy…”  Melissa stated to no one in particular.  “He’s even hotter close up.”

“You should totally go over and introduce yourself.”  Janie encouraged.

“Oh, I could never.”  Melissa shirked in embarrassment.  “Not now, at least.”

“If not now, then when?  You’re gonna be working a lot together.  I’m sure he’d be happy to know you.”  Janie continued.

“You think?” Melissa blushed.

“Sure, what’s the worst that can happen?”  Janie persuaded.

“I don’t know maybe later.”  Melissa scurried off.

Power Hungry

It was still another week until classes started, so Emma took full advantage of the free time that the team had.  Emma worked closely with Coach Beth and Anna on the new routines.  There were three-hour practices scheduled twice a day, and the team was exhausted.  Endurance was important and everyone needed to improve their stamina.  The rest of the time was theirs to use as they wished, but they were still expected to keep up their fitness on their own.

Ever since she shaved off all her hair a few months back, Heather had transformed.  It started off slowly and she wasn’t entirely sure about it at first, but she had since fully embraced every aspect of her new life.  She could never imagine how much her life would change.  Ever since the girl’s trip she went on with Emma, Betty and Katie, her interest in hair had only grown.  What started off as a passing interest that turned into a hobby, had blown into an obsessive passion, and she had the skills to back it up.

Besides her interest in hair, she also embraced her new love of fitness.  When Emma first approached her about joining her for a run every morning, she truly despised the idea and had trouble with it.  When Jessie and Jenny each looked for a new workout partner, they looked at Heather.  At that point, Heather had reluctantly tagged along.  Now, her day felt incomplete without those things.  She would be considered a full-blown gym rat, and easily became the workout junkie on the team.

When she wasn’t taking care of the daily shaves or at the gym, she spent as much time as possible at Evan’s salon.  She embraced this time and often considered it the highlight of her day.  Evan was an amazing mentor and teacher, and Heather soaked it all up like a sponge.

As Evan’s departure date got closer.  Heather took on more responsibility.  As Evan met with his clients, Heather tried to be there as much as possible.  Every client was told that Evan was leaving, and they were given an option to continue.  Some clients gravitated to Heather right away, others were a bit more hesitant.  For those making the switch, a lot of time was spent on the transition.  Heather performed most of the tasks, with Evan there to talk her through every step along the way, and the clients chiming in with their own feedback.

By far the most energetic and enthusiastic of Evan’s clients was Nicole.  It had been a couple of months since her initial makeover and since then she had fully embraced her new look.  She previously had long, virgin blonde hair that hung just above the small of her back, and she would have thought anything above mid-back to be extremely short.  Now, she was one of Evan’s regulars, and she had become a true chameleon.  Nicole was there every two weeks, like clockwork.  Her main request was to walk out with a different look.  Once she sat down, she was a blank canvas and was game for anything.  Her hair was always a different color and was always disappointed whenever Heather wasn’t there.  Currently, she had very short, spiky, bright lime green hair.  She sat down in the chair after an excited hug with Heather.

“Oh, Heather!  I’m so happy you’re here today.”  Nicole grinned.

“Hi, Nikki.  I try to be here as much as possible.”  Heather greeted her friend back.

“Heather’s going to be here even more going forward.”  Evan chimed in.  “Unfortunately, I’ll be moving away soon, and Heather will be taking over any of my clients that are willing.”

“You’re leaving!” Nicole got wide-eyed and her jaw dropped.  “I’m sorry to see you go.  I’m not sure I would have done this without your encouragement.”   She rubbed her head.  “In fact, I know I wouldn’t have.”  She paused a moment.  “But I also wouldn’t have met this wonderful person.”  She turned towards Heather.  “Consider me, officially, your client, and hopefully a friend.”

Heather looked over and smiled.  “Of course.  I’m honored.  Are you sure?”

Nicole gave Heather a stern look.  “Seriously?  As if there should be any doubt.  Didn’t I already promise you this?”  She made a fist and ran it back across her head.  “I wasn’t kidding.”  She turned to Evan.  “Evan, you know I love you, and I’ll never be able to thank you enough for everything.  But is it okay if Heather takes over now?”

Heather got wide eyed and looked over at Evan, who only smiled.  “Sure, Nicole, I had a feeling this might be coming.”

“Now Heather, just relax.” Nicole explained.  “No shave…yet.  Right now, I’m still having too much fun experimenting, and there’s a few more colors I have yet to try.  But I promise that day is coming.  It seems every time I leave here, my hair ends up just a touch shorter.  Eventually, I will run out of hair, but we’re not there yet.”

“Okay, that’s fine.”  Heather got soft.  “I’m still learning about color, and the other aspects beyond cutting.  Anything that doesn’t involve clippers or a razor is still rather new to me.”

“Isn’t all of this still new for you?”  Nicole mused before getting silent.  After a moment, she continued.  “Okay, so buzz me.”  Evan and Heather both exchanged glances and then looked back at Nicole, who chuckled.

“Does that surprise you?”  She grasped at her already short hair.  “Seems like the next logical step, does it not?”  She then sighed, “As for the color, well, I guess you need to practice on someone, don’t you?”  She winked at Heather.  “I trust you.”  She turned to Evan.  “Hey, Ev, I know this may be a big ask, but would you mind leaving and letting Heather and I have some fun for a bit?”

Evan looked over to Heather, who had a bit of a horrified look on her face.  “I’m not sure, if –”

“Please.”  Nicole put up her hand cutting him off.  “If you trust Heather to take over for you, and I trust her as much as I trusted you…”

“It’s okay,” Heather spoke up.  “As long as you’re sure it’s what you want.”

“I promise, you can’t screw it up.   I trust you completely.”

Evan signaled Heather over towards him.  He gave a quick tutorial on mixing color and asked Heather what her plan was.  After she thought for a moment, he helped her mix the solution and gathered everything he thought she might need.  Then, they covered the mirror with the big sheet, which had become standard for all of Nicole’s visits.  He also showed Heather the call button and said if she ran into trouble or needed anything, all she needed to do was hit that button and he would come back in.  After Heather thanked him and assured him that she would be okay, Evan made his way over to Nicole.  And after a quick exchange he left his room and Nicole and Heather were alone.

“In the future, if it’s easier, I can just come to you.”  Nikki began, as Heather started mixing the solution and brushing it onto Nikki’s head.

“Well, I’m still spending most of my time here, when I can, but I’m not sure what happens when Evan leaves.”  Heather admitted.  “I already take care of the rest of my team, at our house on campus, but those are all head shaves.”

“I still think it’s pretty crazy there’s a team of cheerleaders who are completely bald and it’s all by choice.”  Nikki clarified.  “Like, no one is sick or anything.”

“Well, not all of us are bald, but yeah.  I know what you mean.”  Heather agreed.  “Also, nothing is official yet, but there’s been a discussion about starting our own barbershop.”

“Oh, wow.  Really?”  Nikki seemed shocked.  “I didn’t realize that the rest of your team are into this as well.”

“Well, they aren’t, but Emma thinks it’s a good opportunity and doesn’t want us constantly taking over the living room.”  Heather explained.  “I think it’s mainly for the team, but, I guess, with me taking on some of Evan’s clientele, it gives everyone a place to go.”

“Make me a promise then.”  Nikki began.  Heather stopped and looked at her.  “I want to be your first client.  Whenever it’s ready to open, let me know.  I want to be the first one in your chair.”

“Okay.  I don’t think it will be ready right away.  It might not be until the fall, when we start the next semester.”  Heather resumed brushing the color mixture into Nikki’s hair.

“That’s okay.  But it’ll be the same deal as always.  I sit down, and you can do whatever you feel is best.”  Nikki paused for emphasis.  “WHATEVER.  You.  Feel.  Is.  Best.”  She then winked and smiled at Heather, hoping that her young friend would read between the lines.

Attention Seeker

When on the sidelines, the main job of a cheerleader is to look good and encourage the team they are supporting.  While some routines are more involved than others, overall, they generally try not to pull too much focus from the main event.  When in a competition, however, they ARE the main event.

Emma was a talented choreographer, and this competition was a great opportunity to show that off.  Her goal with the routine was to give everyone a moment to shine.  They were a team and each member was important, but she made sure to spread the wealth around and make everyone feel important.  She took advantage of the extra guys added to the team and really put a lot on the flyers.

The guys quickly made their presence felt and were a huge asset to the team.  While Shandra, Elsa, and Janie were all admirable in their base roles, the guys brought things to a whole other level.  When the girls and guys paired up with Heather, Anna, and Melissa, the flyers achieved even greater height and were more acrobatic than ever.  All was going well, and team unity was at an all-time high.  Except for one person.

“Why won’t he acknowledge me?”  Melissa whined to anyone who would listen.  “What else do I need to do?  I’m practically throwing myself at him.”

“What are you talking about?”  Anna, who happened to overhear, checked in.

“Franklin!”  Melissa moaned.  “I’m doing all I can, but he pays me no attention.  Meanwhile, he keeps fawning all over Heather.”

“Well, they are paired up together.”  Anna confirmed.  “But is Tim really that bad?”

“No, it’s not that.” Melissa confessed.  “I have no issue with Tim.  With him and Janie, I’m doing more than I ever thought possible.  I just wish…”  Melissa trailed off.

Anna sat down next to Melissa.  “Yeah, I feel the same about Tate.  The boys really are amazing.  Jessie and Jenny are really lucky.  I mean I knew them, we all did, but not really.  It’s been really cool getting to know them better these past few days.”

“I know, but Franklin doesn’t even acknowledge me.  I see him interacting with EVERYONE else on the team but ME.”  Melissa buried her face in her hands and tried to hold back from crying.  “Why me?  Anna, he’s soooo freakin’ hot!  I’d do anything, even to just be acknowledged.”

“I don’t know, Melissa.  I mean, I suppose I could talk to him.  I don’t know if it will do anything, but if it makes you feel better…”  Anna tried to comfort.

Melissa looked up, her eyes red.  “Oh, Anna, that would be great.  I just want to know.”  She let out a sigh.  “I just hope it’s not because I don’t have boobs.”  Melissa stood up, “I know I’m flatter than the kitchen counter, but I can’t control that.  I make up for it in other ways.”  She pouted.  “I’M A GOOD PERSON!”

“Oh, Melissa.  You’re a great person!”  Anna stood up.  “I’m sure it’s not that.”

“Yeah, well… what else would it be?  It’s the one thing that separates me from the rest of you.”  Melissa stated.

“Um, yeah, well, I suppose that’s true.”  Anna hesitated.  “It definitely is ONE thing, but, ah,” she casually rubbed her freshly shaved head, “It’s not the ONLY thing.”  She smiled, trying not to upset Melissa further but also pointing out the obvious.

Melissa stared at Anna for a moment, then gasped.  “MY HAIR!”  She reached up and scratched her hair, which was in her best attempt at pigtails, which were two tiny little nubs on each side of her head.  “Seriously?  No, it can’t be.  Seriously?”  She continued to stare in disbelief.

“I’m not saying that it is.” Anna explained.  “I mean it could be.  I really have no idea.  Heather might know, but honestly, I wasn’t even suggesting it.  I just wanted to point out that there was a difference, if that’s what you’re highlighting or wondering about.”

“Oh, Anna.  I hope that’s not it.  I really hope it’s not that.”

A New Arrangement

“So, do you have any plans for after you leave here?”  Nikki inquired, as Heather rinsed out her hair.

“Um, well, I was going to ask Evan to drop me off at the gym.  I haven’t gotten a full workout in yet.”  Heather still thought the words seemed a bit foreign to her, and sometimes she had trouble believing she was saying them, but also knew it was genuinely how she felt.

“How long does that usually take?”  Nikki asked.

“I don’t know.  It varies.  It depends on the day, if anyone else is there, and what my schedule looks like.  There are a lot of factors.”  Heather answered as she finished the rinse.

“What would happen if you didn’t work out?”  Nikki continued to inquire, as Heather grabbed a towel and started to dry her hair.

“Nothing.”  Heather continued drying Nikki’s hair and then started to guide her back to the chair.  “Honestly, I only just started to get into it.  I stayed on campus during the holiday break, so it gave me something to do and helped pass the time.”  As Nikki sat down, Heather removed the towel and started to walk towards the counter.  “I kinda got hooked though, and now I really enjoy it.”

“Well, I have to say, it’s working for you.  You look amazing.  I mean you always have.” Nikki paused for a moment.  “Well, at least for as long as I’ve known you, but you’re REALLY looking good now.  I definitely notice a change.”

Heather turned back towards Nikki, with clippers in her hand and smiled.  “Thanks, Nikki, that really means a lot.  You should have seen me a few months ago, I look and feel completely different now.”  She stood behind Nikki and mused over what to do with Nikki’s hair.  “Are you sure you want a buzzcut?”

“That’s up to you.”  Nikki smiled.  “Whatever you decide.  I told you I trust you completely and I don’t want to know until it’s done.”

Heather thought for a minute.  “Be right back.”  Heather put the clippers back down and ran out of the room.  After a minute or two, she came back in.  “Okay, I have an idea.  Close your eyes and hold out your hand.”

Nikki happily obliged and giggled while she did so.  “Sure thing, this sounds fun.  What have you got in mind?”

“I thought you wanted it to be a surprise.”  Heather placed a die in Nikki’s hand.  “Roll.”

“Fair point.”  Nikki shook her hand a bit and then dropped the die on the ground.

Heather looked at the die and quickly scooped it up.  She placed the die back in Nikki’s hand.  “Roll again.”

Nikki once again shook the die a bit and dropped it.  Heather then picked up the die and went back over to the counter and picked up the clippers.  “Okay, you can open your eyes.”  Heather quickly put on an attachment and walked back over towards Nikki.

“By the way, I’m glad we only met when we did.  I have this image of you, and I don’t want it altered in any way.”  Nikki responded, as she opened her eyes.  “Any chance that you would grow your hair again?”

“Nope.”  Heather turned on the clippers and plunged them into Nikki’s hair.  “At least not as long as it was.  Or even anywhere close.”

“Good.”  Nikki grinned as she felt the clippers make their way through her hair.  “Me neither.”  Heather finished the first swipe and began the second.  “You came into my life at the exact right moment.  I’m glad you got to be a part of the shedding of my old self and I’m glad this is how you’ll know me.”

“I’m really glad I was a part of that as well.  Thank you.” Heather finished her second swipe and began her third.  “I think you spoiled me a bit.  It was my first day working with Evan, so you were the first real experience I had with this.”  Heather continued passing the clippers over and through Nikki’s head as they talked.

“My sister is SOO jealous.”  Nikki laughed, while also trying to keep her head still.  “She’s had short hair forever.  She’s been a client of Evan’s for a long time, but she hasn’t really done much else with it.  Neither had I.  But now I feel like I’m making up for lost time.”

“I admire you.”  Heather praised.  “I went from super long hair, that was well past my bum, to practically nothing.  There was no in between.  I never could have known things would turn out this way, but in hindsight, I wonder what some of those middle stages would have been like.”  Heather finished passing the clippers over Nikki’s head.

“Well, I skipped most of those in between stages as well, you know.”  Nikki reminded Heather.  “But you’ve probably had more influence over me then you realize.”

“How so?”  Heather switched out the guard for a much shorter one.

“Well, I was pretty locked in and thought I knew exactly what I wanted.  Evan and I had had long discussions.  Believe me, that haircut was well-planned, and I was very ready for it.” Nikki admitted, as Heather began sculpting the bottom of her hair.  “But while I did walk into this salon fully knowing what to expect, I didn’t plan on meeting you.”  Nikki sighed.  “What I didn’t know was what would happen after.  I was fairly confident, after all the discussions and prep work Evan had done, that my hair would be staying short.  I kind of knew and expected once he made those initial cuts, my long hair days would be over.  However, we had spent so much time discussing my options, I figured I’d stick with that style for a bit longer than I did.”

“I’m sorry.”  Heather apologized, while she continued to work her magic on Nikki’s hair.

“Hey, you have NOTHING to feel sorry for.  Quite the opposite in fact.  I made you a promise that first day and believe me it’s just as much a promise to myself as it is to you.”  Nikki beamed.  “I can tell you that I thought I was making a huge change, and it’s nothing I had ever thought of, but while I was having my hair cut by you and Evan and hearing all about you, suddenly I couldn’t imagine NOT doing it.  I just want to have a bit of fun with my hair first.”

“So, do you plan on keeping it that way?”  Heather asked with genuine interest.  This was the first person outside her teammates who was so into her style and the first time she really got to talk with anyone about it.

“Honestly, I can’t say.”  Nikki began, “Here’s what I know… the past couple months have been so much fun.  I never thought I’d be this person, but I really enjoy all these changes.  I love the idea of coming here one way and walking out with a totally different style.  I haven’t been disappointed yet.  I’m actually looking forward to the day you shave my head.”  Nikki paused for a moment to let her words sink in, as Heather continued sculpting her hair.

“But I’m in no hurry.  With you and your confidence, I have no doubt I’ll love it just the same as everything else I’ve done, and I theoretically could see myself staying that way.  And even just letting those words leave my mouth, seems weird and yet totally right at the same time.  However, I think I could end up getting bored of it.”

“I can’t imagine you ever being boring.  You’re often the highlight of my day or even my week, every time I’ve seen you.”  Heather praised.

“Well, thank you, but that’s exactly my point.  In my previous life, I never did ANYTHING with my hair.  Not bangs, or anything with color.  I barely ever did much more than a trim.  A few years ago, I got about three inches cut off and nearly had a panic attack.  So, yeah, the very definition of boring.”  Nikki explained.

“I can relate to that.  I was the same way.”  Heather stopped for a minute and rubbed her own head.  “I suppose I still am, then in a different way.”

“No, it’s different.”  Nikki sighed.  “Anyway, so I guess I’m making up for lost time.  At some point, I’m sure I’ll end up growing it out and starting over.”

“Oh.” Heather couldn’t help but be a little disappointed.

“But, no, it’s okay.  When I say, ‘grow out,’ I don’t mean like it used to be.  I mean like what I have now or what I had a couple months back.  I mean I would grow back some hair, but not anywhere close to where it used to be.”  Nikki smiled for a moment and chuckled.  “Heck, even my sister’s hair seems long to me now.  I never would have thought that possible.”

This made Heather happy to hear, and she renewed her enthusiasm.  She resumed sculpting Nikki’s hair and after another couple of minutes, she turned the clippers off and put them down.

“Ok, um, I’m done.  I’ll go get Evan, so you can see.”  Heather started towards the door.

“No, wait.”  Nikki stopped Heather.  “Hold on.  You did this.  This is our private moment.  I just want you here when I see it.”  She stood up.  “I know you need help pulling the sheet down.”  She began to walk towards the mirror.  “I’ll close my eyes, and you can help guide me.”

Nikki closed her eyes and reached up and together with Heather pulled the sheet down to reveal the mirror.  Heather quickly made her way over to Nikki and guided her in front of the mirror.  She then turned Nikki to face the mirror and backed away.  After a few moments, Nikki fluttered her eyes open and turned her head in all directions.  She reached her hands up and touched her head as a giant smile cracked her face.  Nikki now had bright flaming red hair.  The length had been reduced to a #1 in the back and sides with clear sharp lines.  On top her hair still had some length and the contrast was stark, but Nikki managed to pull it off.  Without saying a word, she walked over to Heather and gave her a huge hug.

“I let you roll the die to determine what attachment I used.”  Heather began.  “You rolled a one.  I know what that looks like.  My teammate, Anna, wore a #1 buzz the entire time I’ve known her.  Until I shaved her last month.  I knew it wouldn’t leave you with much left and might push what you were willing to do.  So, I had you roll again.”  Heather sighed.  “But then you rolled a six.  So, I honored both rolls of the die.  The top is a six and the bottom is a one.  There’s a bit of an extreme difference in length, but I can always take the top shorter if you prefer.”

“No, I LOVE it.”  Nikki squealed.  “It’s perfect.  Honestly, I was a bit hesitant.  I had no intent or idea I’d be getting a buzzcut when I walked in here.”  She rubbed the back of her head and closed her eyes.  “But I’m glad you did.  Your response and reasoning were perfect.  This only reinforces that I made the right call to trust you.”  She squeezed Heather even tighter and gave her a quick peck on the check.  “My hair is yours.  Forever and always.”

Heather blushed.  “Thank you.  I promise to do my best not to let you down.  But I already do have some ideas for the future, so probably no more dice rolls.”

“That’s okay.  It was fun.”  Nikki grinned, “And it worked out well.”  Nikki started to leave, catching herself in the mirror again, she stopped and admired herself again.  “This hair color is amazing as well.  Let me guess, Katie…”

‘Yeah,” Heather nodded in agreement.  “Well, she’s bald now, too.  So, it’s not exactly a copy, but I also tried to pick something different from what you’ve had before.  You might run out of colors soon, though.”

“That’s when we shave it!”  Nikki winked at Heather.  “But maybe I’ll stick with this a bit.”  Nikki headed for the door before turning around.  “If it’s okay with you, of course.”  She headed out the door and towards the lobby.  Heather quickly followed.
