The Cost of the Multiverse
The mission briefing at UHT Sector 4 Headquarters was steeped in an atmosphere of quiet desperation. High above the command deck, a sprawling holographic projection bathed the room in a cold, artificial blue light. The projection displayed a myriad of collapsing timelines, jagged red lines eating away at the fabric of reality itself. At the center of the console stood three temporal operatives, their faces pale under the glow of the data streams.
“The location is confirmed,” the lead operative stated, her voice tight with tension. “An illegal underground fighting ring. That is where the final piece of the Trinity Artifact is being held.”
The stakes could not be higher. If the artifact was not recovered, the cascading failure of the multiverse would become absolute. The artifact had slipped through dimensional rifts, ending up in the grimy, corrupt underbelly of a world far removed from the pristine halls of the UHT.
“I suggest Yang Xiao Long,” one of the operatives offered, pulling up a holographic dossier of the blonde huntress. “She is an exceptional brawler. She could tear through an underground ring in minutes.”
The commander shook her head, dismissing the file with a swipe of her hand. “Denied. The target environment is highly volatile and the parameters are too specific. If her hair is touched, she enters an uncontrollable berserker rage. This requires a delicate retrieval.”
Instead, a different dossier materialized on the table. Tifa Lockhart. “We send Tifa Lockhart,” the commander decided. “She is highly disciplined and experienced in navigating corrupt underground sectors.”
Tifa, standing in the shadows of the briefing room, stepped forward into the blue light. She had been listening quietly, adjusting the crimson leather gloves that covered her knuckles. She looked at the projection of the seedy arena. “A fighting ring holding a reality-saving artifact? Sounds like my usual Tuesday. I’m in.”
“Initiating spatial extraction,” the computer chimed. “Prepare for descent.”
A swirling vortex of blue energy tore open the fabric of the room. Tifa didn’t hesitate. She stepped through the portal, leaving the sterile environment of the UHT behind, plunging into the dark, rain-slicked alleyways of Sector 7.
The Silken Baron’s Arena
The portal deposited her in a narrow, trash-strewn alleyway. Neon signs advertising illicit goods and cheap entertainment buzzed erratically overhead, casting long, colored shadows across the wet pavement. “Coordinates reached,” Tifa muttered into her comms.
Before her stood a heavy, reinforced steel door—the entrance to The Silken Baron’s Arena.
A female security guard stood watch by the entrance, her arms wrapped around a heavy assault rifle. Tifa’s trained eyes immediately noticed something unusual about the guard: her head was completely, smoothly shaven. Security is tight, Tifa thought to herself. And… why is she bald?. It was an odd detail, but Tifa had no time to ponder it. She bypassed the exterior watch and slipped inside.
The interior of the arena hit her senses like a physical blow. The air was thick with the suffocating stench of cheap cigar smoke, spilled alcohol, and metallic sweat. Hundreds of men in tailored suits stood shoulder-to-shoulder, cheering with a predatory fervor. Above them, a massive fighting cage dominated the center of the room.
As Tifa pushed her way through the throng of rowdy spectators, a massive wall of muscle in a black suit blocked her path. He looked down at her, a sleazy, wide grin stretching across his scarred face. “Well, well. You look like a fighter, sweetheart,” the thug sneered, reaching out to try and touch her long, flowing dark hair. “With hair like that, you should really sign up for a match.”
Tifa batted his hand away, her eyes narrowing.
The man leaned in closer, his breath reeking of liquor. “The Boss pays top dollar to see hair like yours hit the floor. Honestly? A tight, shiny buzzcut would look absolutely fantastic on you.”
Tifa didn’t blink. She merely raised her right fist, the leather of her glove letting out an audible, threatening CRACK as she tightened her grip. “Get out of my way before I break your jaw.”
The thug’s confident smirk vanished instantly. He took a hasty, terrified step back, holding his hands up in surrender. Disgusted, Tifa pushed past him. This place is sick, she thought, her stomach turning. I need to find the ring.
The Price of Defeat
She broke through the crowd just in time to witness the brutal conclusion of a bout. The crowd was in a frenzy, roaring with bloodlust. In the center of the brightly lit ring, a young woman with vibrant pink hair was kneeling on the blood-stained canvas. She was beaten, bruised, and weeping softly.
Standing over her was a sharply dressed man in a purple suit, his hair slicked back with meticulous care. This was the Silken Baron. In his hand, he held a pair of heavy-duty electric clippers.
“You fought poorly,” the Baron announced, his voice amplified over the roar of the crowd. “Now, pay the toll!”
The buzzing of the clippers cut through the cheers. “Please… no…” the defeated fighter begged, her voice cracking with despair.
But there was no mercy in this arena. In a matter of moments, the Baron ruthlessly sheared the long pink locks from the weeping girl’s head. When he was finished, he held the severed ponytail high in the air, presenting it to the jeering audience like a prized hunting trophy. “Magnificent, isn’t it?” he boasted. The defeated, freshly bald fighter stumbled out of the ring, hiding her face in her hands as the crowd snickered and muttered insults, breaking her spirit entirely.
The Baron tossed the pink hair aside and raised a microphone. “Another masterpiece for the collection! Who will be the next to challenge my Champion?”
Tifa had seen enough. The mission was about the artifact, but she couldn’t stand by and watch this sadistic ritual continue. She vaulted over the top rope, landing lightly on the canvas. She locked eyes with the Baron, her stance wide and challenging.
“I’m taking the prize,” Tifa declared, her voice ringing out clear and cold. “And nobody else is losing their hair tonight.”
From the opposite corner of the ring, the reigning Champion stepped forward. She was a towering, heavily muscled woman with a fiery mane of thick red hair that cascaded down past her waist. “I will!” the Champion roared, pounding her fists together.
The bell rang. The redhead charged forward with a deafening war cry, throwing a massive, looping right hook. Tifa didn’t even flinch. She slipped under the blow with effortless grace.
She’s strong, but too slow, Tifa analyzed in a fraction of a second. Telegraphing every punch.
Pivoting on her heel, Tifa drove a devastating, glowing red fist directly into the Champion’s solar plexus. The impact echoed with a sickening CRACK!. Before the larger woman could recover, Tifa unleashed a blinding flurry of strikes. “BEAT RUSH!” she yelled, culminating in an explosive uppercut that sent the Champion flying backward.
“KABOOM!” the impact registered. The redhead hit the mat hard, her long hair fanning out around her motionless body.
“Knockout,” the announcer declared. The crowd erupted into a deafening cheer. “YEAHHH! WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!”
The Canvas of Victory
The Silken Baron stepped back into the ring, a sickeningly polite smile plastered on his face. He extended a pair of humming clippers toward Tifa. “To the victor goes the spoils. It is the unbreakable rule of my arena. Claim her crown!”
Tifa slapped the Baron’s hand away, sending the clippers clattering to the hard canvas. “I’m not playing your sick games. Keep your clippers.”
The atmosphere in the arena instantly soured. The crowd, deprived of their favorite cruel spectacle, began to riot. “BOOOOO! FOLLOW THE RULES! SHAVE HER!” they chanted, slamming their fists against the ring apron in a deafening, rhythmic demand.
The fallen Champion groaned, pushing herself up onto her hands and knees. She looked up at Tifa, her eyes wide with genuine terror. With a trembling hand, she picked up the clippers and offered them to Tifa. “Please. Take them,” the redhead pleaded, her voice a desperate whisper. “If you don’t do it, he’ll take me to the back room. He will do much much worse than just shave my head.”
Tifa looked from the terrified Champion to the furious, bloodthirsty crowd, and finally to the Baron, who was watching with cold, calculating amusement. She felt a deep, twisting pit of disgust in her stomach. I hate this place, she thought. But I can spare her the worst of it.
With a heavy sigh, Tifa braced herself and accepted the clippers. She knelt behind the trembling redhead. “Hold still,” Tifa whispered gently. “I’ll make it as quick as I can.”
Tifa pressed the humming blades to the front of the Champion’s scalp and pushed backward. The sheer volume and density of the vibrant red hair fought against the machine. It’s so thick. The clippers are practically choking on it, Tifa realized as she carved the first wide, pale strip down the center of the woman’s head.
The redhead squeezed her eyes shut, a single tear escaping to roll down her cheek as she let out a quiet sniff.
Tifa adjusted her grip, the clippers letting out a strained BZZ-CHUNK-BZZZZ as she worked. She sheared the right side, letting the heavy red locks fall to the canvas. But as she moved to the left, she stopped. She pulled the clippers away and brushed the remaining hair over the woman’s face.
I can’t save it all, Tifa thought, stepping back to view her work. But I can leave her something. She had left the redhead with a stark Chelsea cut—shaved over the crown and the right side, but preserving a long fringe and the left lengths. It was a compromise, but it satisfied the bloodlust of the crowd while leaving the fighter with a shred of her identity.
The Baron clapped his hands slowly. “Excellent work, my dear,” he purred, eyeing the pile of red hair on the floor. “Now, follow me for your real prize. The artifact awaits.”
The Ultimate Trade
Tifa followed the Baron out of the roaring arena and into his private wing. The noise of the crowd vanished, replaced by the humming of climate-controlled air and the soft classical music piping through hidden speakers. They walked down a long, immaculate hallway lined with brightly lit, glass-encased pedestals.
“What… what is this sick place?” Tifa asked, feeling a chill run down her spine.
“My gallery,” the Baron replied, gesturing grandly to the exhibits. “I don’t just take their pride, my dear. I preserve it. Hair is the ultimate canvas of victory!”
Tifa looked closely at the glass cases. Inside each one rested a perfectly preserved ponytail, braid, or shock of hair, each bathed in spotlight.
“I’ll tell you another time about the elite quality of hair,” the Baron continued, pointing to a particularly prominent display. “See that blonde ponytail there. That belonged to Sailor Moon.”
Tifa’s jaw tightened. Who’s Sailor Moon? she wondered, though it hardly mattered. He’s not just a crime boss. He’s an obsessed lunatic. At the end of the gallery, they reached a massive, heavy steel vault door. The Baron punched a code into the keypad. With a heavy groan of shifting gears, the door swung open, revealing the prize. Sitting atop a sleek pedestal, crackling with raw, purple multidimensional energy, was the Trinity Artifact.
There it is, Tifa thought, her muscles tensing, ready to spring into action. I just need to grab it and call for the extraction.
“Behold. The artifact you seek,” the Baron said, stepping aside.
Tifa lunged forward, but the Baron raised his right hand. Clutched in his palm was a heavy, industrial remote control with a glowing red button. His thumb rested dangerously over it. “Ah, ah, ah. I wouldn’t move so quickly, my dear.”
Tifa stopped dead in her tracks. “What do you want?”.
“I saw your speed in the ring,” the Baron said, his eyes gleaming with greedy obsession. “I want you to be my new Champion. Fight for me, and I will give you wealth beyond measure.” He gestured to the remote. “This sphere is rigged to a highly volatile explosive. It is a dead-man’s switch. If you attack me, or if my thumb slips… the artifact is vaporized permanently.”
Tifa crossed her arms, standing her ground. “I don’t fight for sick criminals. Keep your money.”
The Baron’s face twisted in sudden, violent rage. “You dare refuse? Then you leave with nothing! The timelines you spoke of will burn!”
Time seemed to slow down for Tifa. She calculated the distance. I can knock him out in half a second, she thought, tracing the trajectory of a potential strike. But I can’t guarantee his thumb won’t press the button as he falls. The image of the UHT holographic maps collapsing flashed in her mind. I can’t risk the multiverse.
Sensing her hesitation, the Baron’s angry expression melted back into a sinister, predatory smile. He reached out with his free hand and gently caught a long strand of Tifa’s hair, rubbing it between his fingers. “Unless… you offer a trade,” he whispered. “The artifact, in exchange for the iconic, pristine dark hair of Avalanche’s finest.”
Tifa closed her eyes. Her hair had been a part of her identity for as long as she could remember. It was a symbol of her resilience, flowing behind her through every battle she had fought for the planet. But the weight of countless realities pressed upon her shoulders. There was no other choice.
She opened her eyes, blazing with defiance, and slowly walked toward the steel barber chair sitting inexplicably in the corner of the vault. She sat down, keeping her eyes fixed on him. “Do it,” she growled. “But if you damage that artifact, I will break every bone in your body.”
The Avalanche Brawler, Rebranded
“A signature look… but it must come undone,” the Baron murmured, setting his detonator down on a nearby table just out of reach. He stood behind the chair, his hands surprisingly gentle as he gathered her long, dark locks together. “Traditional methods, remember?”
Tifa kept her eyes forward, her knuckles white as she gripped the armrests of the chair. “…Get it over with,” she commanded.
“Remarkable texture,” the Baron praised, pulling her hair back into a tight, heavy ponytail at the nape of her neck. “Almost a shame to let it fall, isn’t it? Such a masterpiece of discipline.”
If this detente holds… everyone is safe. Just focus, Tifa reminded herself, swallowing the lump of anxiety forming in her throat.
“Patience, my dear. Victory isn’t claimed in an instant. Though, I do wonder how long that discipline holds…” the Baron taunted. He produced a pair of large, heavy steel shears. He wrapped his fingers around the thick base of her ponytail. “A flawless specimen.”
Tifa let out a sharp, involuntary gasp—”Grk.”—as the cold steel of the blades pressed tightly against her neck.
CRUNCH.
The sound of the shears biting through the thick bundle of hair was deafening in the quiet vault. In a single, violent motion, the weight vanished. The heavy, dark ponytail fell to the polished floor with a soft thud, instantly severing Tifa from the image she had carried for years.
“Now, for the canvas,” the Baron smiled, kicking the severed ponytail aside. He picked up the electric clippers. The loud, angry buzzing filled the room.
He started on the left side of her head. Tifa clenched her jaw as the vibrating metal teeth dug into her scalp, pushing through the remaining short hairs. He didn’t just trim it; he stripped the left side completely, down to the bare skin, leaving only a harsh, bristly stubble in its wake. She felt the cool air of the vault hit her newly exposed scalp, sending a shiver down her spine.
“Just one final touch to make it truly mine,” the Baron said, the scraping sound of a mixing bowl echoing behind her. He returned with a brush dripping with a thick, pungent chemical paste. “A signature brand for a signature fighter. Now, we wait.”
He applied the thick bleach to the remaining lengths of her hair on the right side. The moment the chemicals touched her scalp, a fierce, stinging heat bloomed across her skin. What is that smell? Chemicals? Tifa winced, her eyes watering slightly from the fumes. The paste bit into her skin with a fiery intensity. It burns. It itches like crazy. Just focus on the mission, she commanded her trembling body.
A digital timer on the wall began to tick down from 30:00. For half an hour, Tifa sat in agonizing stillness, the chemicals cooking the dark pigment from her remaining hair, transforming it fundamentally.
When the timer finally zeroed out, the Baron tilted her head back into a steel washbasin. He rigorously scrubbed the burning paste from her scalp with ice-cold water, sending shocks of relief and numbness through her skin. He massaged a dark purple toner into the freshly bleached strands, letting it sit for a few moments before rinsing it clear. Finally, he aggressively towel-dried her remaining hair, tossing the damp towel aside.
“My masterpiece is complete,” the Baron declared proudly, stepping back to admire his work. “Look upon your new crown.”
He spun her chair around to face a mirrored panel on the vault wall. Tifa barely recognized the woman staring back at her. The left side of her head was shaved down to the skin, raw and aggressive. The right side fell in a sleek, chin-length, asymmetrical swoop of icy, platinum blonde.
“The Avalanche Brawler, rebranded,” the Baron laughed softly.
Tifa reached up slowly, her gloved fingers lightly touching the shaved stubble, then running through the unfamiliar blonde strands. It’s… all gone. And the color…. A wave of profound loss washed over her, quickly replaced by a surging, icy anger. She stood up abruptly, shrugging off the salon cape.
“We had a deal,” Tifa demanded, her voice dripping with venom. “Give me the stone.”
The Baron smirked, stepping aside to allow her access to the pedestal. “A pleasure doing business with you, Champion.”
Tifa grabbed the glowing purple Trinity Artifact, securing it in her pouch. She didn’t look back at the Baron, nor did she look down at the massive, tragic pile of her own pristine dark hair sweeping across the floor of the vault. She tapped her earpiece. “Sector 4 Headquarters. Extract me. Now.”
The Promise
The blue spatial portal deposited her back in the center of the UHT briefing room. The three operatives stood around the console, their eyes widening in shock as they took in Tifa’s radical, asymmetrical blonde appearance.
Before any of them could speak, Tifa held up a hand. “I did what I had to do.” She tossed the crackling Trinity Artifact onto the holographic table. “I got the stone. Don’t ask about the hair. Just send me home.”
As the technicians scrambled to secure the artifact and stabilize the collapsing timelines, Tifa turned back to the commander. Her platinum fringe fell over her eye, making her glare look even more piercing. “Wait. Before you send me back,” she said, pointing a finger at the readouts. “The man who had the stone. The Silken Baron.”
The commander looked up. “What about him?”
“He runs an underground arena, but worse… he is hoarding the hair of the fighters he defeats. He has a whole gallery of preserved ponytails and braids locked in glass cases. It’s sick. We have to do something about him.”
The commander sighed, adjusting her glasses. “We do not usually interfere directly with the internal affairs and criminals of other dimensions. Our mandate is strictly multiversal preservation.” She paused, looking closely at the sacrifice Tifa had made to ensure that preservation. The stark, shaved side of her head spoke volumes of the ordeal she had just endured.
“But,” the commander relented, “since you secured the artifact for us at such a great personal cost, we will launch an investigation into his gallery. However, first we must stabilize the timelines and bring down the H.M.I. crisis. Once the multiverse is saved, we will deal with the Collector.”
Tifa nodded slowly. It wasn’t immediate justice, but it was a promise. She ran a hand through her newly shortened, blonde hair, feeling the strange, light emptiness where her heavy ponytail used to be. The multiverse was safe, but the Silken Baron’s days were numbered.
