A Barberette claims her man.

The afternoon sun hung low and heavy over Fort Worth, baking the concrete walkways of the open-air mall in a shimmering wave of 1980s Texas heat. To twenty-three-year-old Leo, however, the temperature had very little to do with the weather.

For the past three weeks, Leo’s weekly errand run had featured a very deliberate detour. Tucked between a record store and a boutique sat The Golden Shear, a classic neighborhood barbershop with bright red-and-white striped poles flanking the glass door. Inside worked a barberette named Roxanne.

Roxanne was breathtaking—all high cheekbones, heavy dark eyeliner, a mischievous laugh, and a confident swagger that made Leo’s pulse hammer against his ribs every time he got within fifty yards of the place. Crowned above her stunning face was a colossal mane of dark brown hair, teased high toward the heavens, feathered at the sides, and held in an impenetrable, gravity-defying cloud by an industrial dose of Aqua Net hairspray. She possessed the kind of effortless magnetism that rendered him completely tongue-tied. His routine was simple, cowardly, and entirely consistent: walk past the front window, pretend to check his watch, sneak a breathless glance at her silhouette through the glass, and keep walking before she ever noticed him.

Except today, the routine broke.

As Leo rounded the corner, eyes fixed modestly on his sneakers, a familiar voice called out, rich with amusement.

“You know, walking past a place five times in twenty minutes usually means you’re lost, cher. Or you’re just chicken.”

Leo froze. He looked up, his face burning instantly hot. Roxanne was leaning against the brick doorframe just outside the shop. She wore a fitted denim vest over a black tank top, a gold chain resting against her collarbone, and a lit cigarette pinched between two fingers. As she leaned there, her huge, stiffly teased hair caught the afternoon sunlight like an aura. She took a slow drag, exhaled a thin stream of gray smoke into the Texas air, and eyed him with a wicked, knowing grin.

“I—uh. Not lost,” Leo stammered, his voice cracking slightly. “Just… stretching my legs.”

“Well, your legs look like they’re working overtime,” Roxanne purred, dropping her cigarette into a metal ash urn and pushing off the wall. “Come here often?”

“Every Tuesday,” Leo blurted out before his brain could stop him.

Roxanne laughed, a warm, melodic sound that melted what little resolve he had left. “I know. I see you pacing back and forth like a stray hound. Get in here before I die of heatstroke.”

Before he could protest, she grabbed him gently by the elbow and towed him inside the cool, air-conditioned sanctuary of the shop. As she pulled him close, her distinct, intoxicating scent enveloped him—an unforgettable blend of sweet French perfume, rich tobacco smoke, and the chemical, vanilla-scented sting of aerosol Aqua Net.

“Sit,” she commanded, patting the worn leather and chrome of the main barber’s chair.

Leo sank into it, feeling completely out of his depth as Roxanne snapped a heavy, slick black nylon cape around his neck, cinching it snugly at his throat. In the mirror, he looked wide-eyed and utterly defenseless.

Roxanne moved behind him, her fingers immediately sinking into his hair as she tilted his head back to check the length. The casual, intimate brush of her body against the back of the chair sent a jolt straight down his spine. He was instantly, hopelessly mesmerized. Her nearness and the close proximity was like a dream.

“So, what are we doing today?” she asked, her breath warm against his ear as she unclipped a pair of heavy silver shears. “Just a little trim off the neck and ears?”

“Yeah,” Leo managed to breathe. “Just a trim, please.”

“A trim it is,” she whispered, her voice a low purr.

Scissors flashed in the mirror. As she worked, Roxanne leaned in close, her arm brushing his shoulder, talking a mile a minute about the weekend heat, the local scene, and laughing at his halting, nervous responses. But as the conversation flowed, Leo noticed something else. The snip of the scissors was becoming uncomfortably steady. Clumps of his medium-length brown hair began cascading down his chest and onto the floor.

“Roxanne,” Leo started, peering into the mirror. “That feels… a little short on the sides.”

“Hush, let me work,” she chuckled, spinning the chair slightly so he had to look at her instead of the mirror. “Trust me. You have great bone structure, sweetheart. You’re hiding it under all that mop.”

Before he could argue, she swapped the scissors for a pair of electric clippers. Bzzzz.

Leo swallowed hard as the metal guard bit into the sides of his head. He watched in a hypnotic daze as she buzzed the sides clean, seamlessly transitioning into a sharp, crisp regulation military cut. It was dramatic, clean-cut, and entirely unexpected—yet framed his face in a way that made him look older, sharper, and undeniably striking.

“See?” she murmured, leaning her hip against the arm of the chair, her face inches from his. “Handsome. But we’re not done yet.”

“We’re… we’re not?” Leo whispered.

Her eyes danced with mischief. “Not by a long shot.”

Before he could utter another word, she switched off the clippers, removed the guard entirely, and set the bare blade against the nape of his neck. Bzzzz. Higher and higher the clippers went, clearing away the bulk of the top, sculpting his hair down into an aggressive, ultra-short high and tight.

Leo sat frozen, his mind spinning in a haze of panic and pure, unadulterated attraction. He opened his mouth to say something—anything—about how short it was getting, but Roxanne cut him off with a dazzling, triumphant grin.

“Shh. Close your eyes, Leo.”

Mesmerized and powerless to resist, Leo closed his eyes.

Roxanne reached for the lather machine, which hummed to life with a low, cozy vibration. She pumped a generous, warm mound of thick, luxurious shaving cream into her palm. Stepping up behind the chair, she didn’t just apply it; she took her time, sexually aggressively rubbing the warm, rich lather all over his scalp. Her small, firm hands worked in slow, heavy, circular strokes, massaging the warm foam into his bare skin, up over the crown, down the sides, and along the back of his neck.

Leo’s breath hitched in his chest. With every drag of her hands across his sensitive scalp, her body pressed firmly against the arm and back of his chair, wrapping him entirely in her aroma of expensive perfume, stale cigarette smoke, and stiff hairspray. The sensational rhythm of her hands working the lather into his scalp sent deep, tingling waves down his neck and straight down his spine. He was floating, completely paralyzed by the sensory overload.

“Mmm, feels good, doesn’t it?” she murmured softly near his ear, her voice dripping with playful power.

She retrieved a heavy, silver straight razor, snapping open the handle with a practiced flourish. Leo opened his eyes just enough to see her leaning over him, her giant, teased hair framing her wicked smile. Her cleavage, seen through her open buttoned Barber smock made Leo’s pulse race to the point that he felt faint.

She set the flat, ice-cold steel blade against the center of his forehead. Swwiiiitch.

The first long, deliberate stroke dragged straight back across his crown, clearing a path of thick foam and revealing a gleaming, completely hairless strip of scalp beneath. The intense temperature contrast—hot, thick lather against the chilling drag of the razor blade—made Leo gasp softly.

Roxanne chuckled, stepping around the side of the chair. She rested her hip heavily against his arm, pinning him in place as she began shaving the left side of his head. Swish. Swish. Short, meticulous strokes cleared away the stubble down to the bare skin, leaving behind a sensation so raw and exposed it made his skin prickle. She wiped the razor clean on a towel draped over her shoulder, her eyes locked on his in the mirror, watching him squirm under her complete control.

She switched to the other side, leaning so close over him that her chest brushed his shoulder, her massive hair almost grazing his cheek. Her thumb stroked along his freshly smoothed temple to stretch the skin tight before dragging the steel down over his ear and along the sensitive nape of his neck. Swish… swish. Every pass of the razor was agonizingly slow, calculated, and intensely intimate. She took her time, carefully feeling over every inch of his scalp with her fingers to check for any missed spots, smoothing more warm lather over a tiny rough patch on the crown before gently gliding the razor over it once more.

By the time she wiped his head clean with a damp, warm towel and dusted him with a splash of stinging, fragrant aftershave, his head was completely, impeccably bald. The cool air of the air-conditioned shop kissed his bare skin, sending shivers cascading through his entire body. He was completely at her mercy, and he had never wanted anything less to end.

“There,” Roxanne whispered, brushing a stray bit of foam from his cheek with her thumb. “Perfection.”

She unclipped the cape, shaking it out with a snap. Leo sat up slowly, running a tentative hand over his smooth, completely bare head. He stared at his reflection in the mirror—unrecognizable, completely altered, and utterly spellbound.

He stumbled out of the chair, digging into his wallet in a daze, and handed her the money. Roxanne took it, letting out a rich, silvery laugh that echoed off the tile floor as she watched him sway slightly on his feet.

She walked him to the door, leaning her frame against the jamb. She reached up, gently tapping him on the chin with one manicured finger, tilting his face up to hers.

“You look gorgeous, Cowtown,” she purred softly, a slow, knowing smile spreading across her lips. “Don’t wash that head yet. Pick me up right here in an hour when we lock up. We’re hitting the roadhouse down on Seventh Street.”

Before Leo could form a coherent sentence, she leaned in and pressed a lingering, sweet-tasting kiss to his cheek, leaving him standing completely paralyzed.

She stepped back, pulled a fresh cigarette from a pack, and lit it. With a wink, she blew a perfect, curling smoke ring straight toward him.

Still caught deep in her orbit, Leo turned on his heel and wandered off down the blistering mall walkway in a total, hypnotic daze, completely forgetting which direction his car was parked.
