Prologue: The day after
The light of dawn crept timidly through the curtains, marking the start of a new day. Madison was the first to open her eyes, still disoriented from sleep, until a blast of cold air on her scalp jolted her awake. She ran her hand over her head, feeling the soft, exposed skin where her abundant brown hair used to be. A knot formed in her stomach as memories of the night before invaded her mind.
As she sat up in bed, she saw her two friends still asleep. Lilith, with her hair shaved short, and Taylor, without her trademark pink locks, looked so different. What had started as a sleepover joke had escalated to the point where all three were completely bald.
Madison sighed deeply, feeling guilty. She stood up, walking to the bathroom mirror, where she looked at her reflection. The lack of her long hair made her feel vulnerable, but also somewhat liberated. However, she knew the situation would not be so easy for the others.
When she came out of the bathroom, Lilith was already awake, sitting on the bed, touching her bald head with a serious expression. There was no trace of her typical Vinotinto braid.
-Well? -Lilith asked without looking up, her voice low and resigned. I guess this is the price of jokes, isn’t it?
Madison swallowed saliva, slowly approaching.
-Lilith, I’m sorry… I didn’t know things were going to turn out like this. I just wanted to do something fun, but…” her voice trailed off, unable to find the right words.
Lilith looked up, her expression hard but calm.
-Madison, this was more than a joke. You took something important from us, and even though I got even, it doesn’t mean the problem is solved.
-I know…” Madison whispered, feeling the guilt growing.
At that moment, Taylor also woke up, her fingers gently touching her own scalp, her face showing a mixture of sadness and surprise.
-I can’t believe I’m completely bald…” she muttered, her voice cracking in disbelief. Madison, how could you really do this to us, we’re your friends, I never thought you’d do this to us!
Madison bit her lip, looking at her two friends. She knew things wouldn’t be fixed with apologies alone.
-I know I made a mistake,” he said, his tone firmer. And I’ll do whatever it takes to fix it. But we can’t spend the day arguing. We have to face the world today, and I know it’s going to be hard. But I want you to know that I’m here for you.
Lilith watched her for a moment, then nodded.
-It’s okay. I accept your apology, Madison, but I’m not ready to forget yet. Let’s see how we handle this at the salon. It won’t be easy to explain this to the clients.
Taylor nodded as well, though her sad smile didn’t reach her eyes.
-I guess I’ll have to show my face at work too. I just hope they don’t ask me too many questions.
The three shared a silent look, knowing that the day ahead would be a challenge for all three. The sleepover was over, but its consequences were just beginning.
Combined perspective of Madison and Lilith: The Hair Salon
The doorbell rang as Madison turned the “Open” sign at the entrance to her hair salon. The echoing sound seemed louder than normal to her, or maybe it was her imagination. She was nervous. The salon, which had always been her pride and joy, now felt like a stage where she would have to give unwanted explanations.
Lilith arrived shortly after, her gait steady as always, but there was something different about her presence. Without her trademark braid, Lilith seemed more serious, colder, and Madison could feel the tension emanating from her.
-Well, here we are,” Lilith said with a sigh, adjusting her lab coat and looking at her own station. Ready to explain this to the clients?
-As much as you can be,” Madison replied, trying to sound upbeat, though her voice was shaking a little.
The first clients began to arrive. There were murmurs and curious glances, but no one dared to ask directly. An older woman, who used to be Lilith’s client, watched her with eyes full of astonishment.
-Lilith, honey… what happened to you? -asked the woman, her tone mixed with concern.
Lilith remained impassive, as if she had already anticipated the question.
-I decided to try something new,” he said without batting an eye, adjusting the cape on the client. Change is important in this industry, you know.
The response silenced any further comment, and the client insisted no more. But Madison, as she attended to her own clients, couldn’t help but feel guilty. Lilith had been very professional, but the reality was that her friend was still hurting. The tension between them was in the air.
In between trims and blow-dries, there were furtive glances between the two, and although they worked as a well-coordinated team, the weight of the previous night’s haircut was still present.
At the end of the day, when the last customer left and the salon was silent, Lilith turned to Madison.
-Today wasn’t so bad,” he said, almost as a reflection. But it can’t go on like this. We need a solution.
Madison nodded slowly, shaking her head.
-You’re right… And I think I do. But I need to tell Taylor too.
Lilith looked at her, arching an eyebrow, intrigued but keeping her emotional distance.
-What are you talking about?
-There’s something I haven’t told you,” Madison began, as she gathered the towels and cleaned the stations. Something my family has kept secret for years. It’s a special formula… something that can help us get our hair back quickly.
Lilith watched her carefully, but said no more. She knew they would need to discuss it at length, but that would be later, when Taylor was also present.
Taylor’s perspective: The office
Meanwhile, Taylor walked the long halls of Lindholm Industries, trying not to draw attention to herself. Her hair, or lack thereof, was what worried her most. She knew her colleagues would look at her with curiosity or questions. It felt like all eyes were on her.
In her office, as she tried to concentrate on the designs and plans in front of her, she heard her colleagues murmuring around her. Finally, one of her closest colleagues, Stephanie, approached with a nervous smile.
-Taylor… what did you do to your hair?
Taylor smiled sheepishly, reaching up to touch his bald head.
-Oh, I just… I decided to try something different. You know, a radical change.
Stephanie watched her for a few seconds before nodding slowly.
-Well, you look… different. But if anyone can carry it off well, it’s you.
Taylor nodded, grateful, although the comment didn’t entirely relieve her. For the rest of the day, she tried to concentrate on her work, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the strange feeling of being exposed. Although she had always been creative with her image, the shaved hair made her feel more vulnerable than she had anticipated.
When the clock struck the end of the day, Taylor let out a sigh of relief. It was time to meet Madison and Lilith at the café. She hoped that together they could find a solution, something that would help them get through this uncomfortable episode.
Reunion at the cafeteria
The small café where they usually met was cozy, with warm lights and a quiet atmosphere. Madison arrived first, sitting at her usual table, drumming her fingers nervously on her coffee cup. Lilith was not long in arriving, her gait steady but her face serious, and Taylor appeared soon after, a mixture of exhaustion and relief on her face.
-Well… what now? -Taylor asked as he slumped back in his chair.
Lilith looked at Madison, knowing the answer would come from her.
-There’s something I haven’t told you,” Madison began, her voice soft but determined. And I think it’s time you knew it. My family… has a secret formula. One that makes hair grow faster.
Both friends looked at her in disbelief. Taylor was the first to speak.
-Really? Why didn’t you say so before?
-I wasn’t sure if I should,” Madison admitted. It’s something my grandmother always told me to keep secret, but after everything that happened…I want you to use it. To fix what I did.
Lilith frowned thoughtfully.
-And will it work?
Madison smiled with a small hint of confidence.
-Just a few drops and we’ll have our scalps back in no time. But I ask one thing of you: that we keep it a secret.
The three looked at each other for a few seconds, and then Lilith nodded slowly.
-All right. But this time, no more surprises, okay?
Taylor smiled, relieved.
-Yes, please. I’ve had enough adventures for one week.
Madison smiled as well, feeling that, although the problem was not yet completely solved, at least they had a plan. And more importantly, they had their friendship.
