Here’s the next chapter:

RECOVERY

Spring Break was fast approaching.  Normally, it was a time that they looked forward to and were excited about.  However, it seemed that there was a black cloud over the cheer house, with many of the team in an inescapable funk.

“Come on, Anna!  It’s been three weeks.  No one blames you.  It was an amazing routine.”  Janie pleaded.  “I want my friend back!”

Janie sat on the bed in Anna’s room while Anna hid under her sheets.  She had barely left her room since the team returned from the competition.  She was inconsolable.  The team had flamed out hard.  Most of the team took the loss pretty hard, but many of them slowly got over it as the days and weeks passed.

“We didn’t even get past the preliminary round.”  Anna muffled through her blanket.  “It’s not like we even had to win.  I knew that was a long shot given the circumstances, but I expected to make it to the second day…”

“I know and it sucks.  We probably won’t get to go back next year, but we did our best and that’s all anyone can ask.”  Janie was doing her best to console her friend and rally her out of her funk.  It was the same thing she had done every day for the past two weeks.  Nothing seemed to work.

Melissa wasn’t doing much better.  Her arm was taking a long time to heal, and she was in immense pain.  The fact that the team did so poorly in the competition only made things worse.  Maybe if she had been able to compete, they would have done better.  Maybe if she hadn’t broken up with that scum Franklin, the team would have been stronger.

“I’ve never seen the team like this, Emma…”  Betty confided in her coach and friend.  “I wish there was something I could do.”

“Maybe there is…”  Emma sat back as she thought things through for a minute.  “Got any plans for Spring Break?”

“I was going to go away with Heather for a few days.  She REALLY needs a vacation.”  Betty grew concerned.  “Why? Did you have something in mind?”

“Just that the team could use some positive vibes.  I know we had our girls weekend last year, and I asked you to continue with what I hope will become an annual tradition, but –”

“Emma, that house isn’t big enough for the whole team.”  Betty pointed out.

“There are other houses in the area.”

“But –”

“Don’t worry about the cost.   Jackie wants to put her expense account to good use.”

Betty sighed, “I guess it’s already been decided…”

“We’ll be having a team meeting later to discuss it.”  Emma confirmed.

ANNOUNCEMENT

It was the first time the entire team had gathered since they returned from the competition.  All twelve girls sat in the living room.  Coaches Emma and Jackie stood at the front of the room.

“Alright, everyone.  The mourning period ends now.”  Coach Emma declared.  “Yes, we lost the competition.  Yes, it ended badly.  But there’s nothing to be done about it and I won’t let this team continue to mope around.  It’s like a funeral in here.”

“I’m so proud of this team.  I’m proud of how we all came together and support each other.”  Coach Jackie added.  “We’re a family, and I won’t let anything get in the way of that.”

“Spring Break is next week, and you all deserve a vacation.  So, we put together a little retreat for those who want it.”

“It won’t be for the full week, but it will be for several days.  I encourage you all to attend.”

“Are there any questions?”  Emma surveyed the room.  Jessie’s hand shot up.  “The trip is just for the girls.  Sorry, no guys this time.  Does that answer your question?”  Jessie nodded and put her hand down.

“Is this mandatory?” Shandra asked from her chair without bothering to look up from her phone.

“No, it’s your break.  We wouldn’t take that away from you.  But we did want to give you all an opportunity to have something to do.”  Emma answered.

“Then I’m out.”  Shandra declared.

“Okay.  We don’t have to discuss all of this now.  We just wanted to let you know that the option existed.”

“If it helps to put anyone’s mind at ease, my company is going to take care of the expenses.  So, you can all just relax and have a good time.”  Jackie noted.

“That’s all for now.  If anyone has any questions, we’re happy to answer them.  Otherwise, you’re all free to go.  But please, no more pouting or dwelling on the competition.”  Emma declared.

With that, the team dispersed.

BARBER’S CHOICE

Helen was excited to go to the barbershop.  It was a reflection on just how much her life had changed.  It was not that long ago that this long hair girl feared any kind of haircut and avoided anything but the slightest of trims.  Even an inch seemed like a lot.  But the life of a poor college student has dictated quite a few changes recently.  It wasn’t always how she would have preferred it, but she had accepted it.

Helen’s hair was short now.  It’s not something she would have willingly chosen, but she loved it.  Her hair had never had so much personality before.  Now, she expected a new look every time she went to the barbershop.  Her nerves had been replaced by anxious anticipation.  The best part, and her favorite part, was that she didn’t have to decide anything.  She could just sit back and let Heather do whatever she pleased.  Helen always left more than satisfied.  Plus, last time she was there, Heather started to tell Helen about her particularly interesting origin story.  Now Helen couldn’t wait to get back to hear the rest of it.  She made sure to stop by shortly before she left for Spring Break.

The door to the barbershop opened and Helen entered.  “Hi Nikki, I’m here to see Heather.”  Helen said to the multi-colored liberty spiked receptionist.  This was the same person who freaked Helen out the first time she laid eyes on Nikki, but Helen had since gotten used to the look.

“Welcome back, Helen.  Heather’s ready for you.  Feel free to head straight back, if you’re ready.”  Nikki informed the pleasant freshman.

“Oh, okay.  Thanks.”  Helen smiled.  She didn’t even have to sit in the waiting area and just headed straight towards the back room.

As Helen entered the back room, she headed straight to the barber chair.  Heather was off in the corner, hanging upside down from her pull-up bar.  Helen eagerly sat down as she waited for Heather to finish.

“So, what’s the plan, today?”  Heather asked as she hopped off the bar a few minutes later.  “Sorry, to keep you waiting.  It’s been a rough few weeks.”

“It’s okay, I don’t mind.”  Helen answered.  “There isn’t a plan, or at least I don’t have one.  I never have one.  Maybe I can help you feel better.”

“Oh?  How’s that?”

“Let’s just skip the die roll.  Barber’s choice.  Absolutely ANYTHING you want.  I’m up for whatever.  No restrictions.”  Helen laid it all out.  “Just one request.  Will you please finish your story?”

“So, you have two requests.”  Heather corrected.

“Two?”

“I assume you want this done for free?”  Heather clarified.  “Even though we aren’t using the dice roll.”

“Oh,” Helen blushed, slightly embarrassed.  “Yeah, I guess I thought that would be okay…  But I can roll the die if I need to.”

“No, it’s fine.  I’ve already got something in mind for you.”  Heather replied.  “You’re sure you want this?  Any style I pick?  Any color?”

Helen grinned.  “There’s nothing I would like more.”  She lacked the ability to make decisions, yet, on this she had no doubt.  “But I want to hear the rest of your story.”

“I was a shy girl.  Very timid, very insecure.  Quiet.  I kept to myself and didn’t like to cause a ruckus.”  Heather walked over to the mirror and pulled the curtain over it.  I had crazy long hair that varied a bit between mid-thigh and slightly above my ankles.  I also was completely covered up.  Typically, only my hands and face would be exposed.  Even in summer, I’d rarely wear anything that exposed any skin.”

“So, basically the exact opposite of what you are now.”  Helen replied.

“Pretty much.”  Heather confirmed, as she combed through Helen’s hair and sectioned it off.  “Between my hair and clothes, it was almost half my body weight.  I used to be so tiny.  I mean, I still am, but I’ve actually bulked up quite a bit the past couple of years.  So, anyway, for whatever reason I took to cheer.  It was like my one activity.  I liked the uniform, but I’d always wear leggings and a body suit underneath.  Again, always fully covered up.”

“Hiding that amazing, flawless body…”

“And it was like a double cover up, because besides my clothes, don’t forget I had all that hair as well.”  Heather continued to prep Helen’s hair. “I was nervous to go to college.  It’s the first time I had ever been away from home, and it was a totally new beginning.  Which had its advantages and disadvantages.”  Heather sighed.  “But admittedly, I was a bit naive and sheltered.  I lacked a LOT of life experience.  When I finished high school, my hair was down to my knees.  By the time I started college, it fell a bit past my butt.  Which was the shortest it had ever been to that point.”

“That’s still really long, though.”

“It is.  Many would say it was too long.  This team definitely took notice of it as well.  At the time most of the team, still had “long hair” by most people’s standards. Nowhere close to as long as mine was, but then the cutting began.  Still, I hung onto my long hair and never had any thoughts of cutting it even a little.”  Heather picked up her scissors and cut a large chuck of Helen’s hair on her left side.  “I was paired off with a Junior, Shandra, for all the lifts and aerials.  I was super light and she was so strong, so she could toss me like I was nothing.  I’ve never been higher.  I idolized her.  She was everything I wasn’t.  We bonded, or so I thought.”  Heather cut another chunk of Helen’s hair on her right side.

Helen hung on to every word.  She had just lost a significant amount of hair and she barely even noticed.  She expected to lose a lot more and she hardly cared.  It would still be less than Heather had, and she seemingly turned out great.

“Everything probably would have been fine, and the trajectory of this team might have been completely different if it wasn’t for one act.  Shandra slept with the boyfriend of another teammate, Betty.”  Heather smiled as she said her name.  “Betty didn’t take it well and cut off all her hair in response.  As a disciplinary action, and if she wanted to stay on the team, Shandra had to cut hers as well.  This opened the floodgates as the rest of the team followed suit.  And then there was me.  I still probably wouldn’t have done anything if not for one comment.”  Heather walked over to the counter and picked up her clippers.  She checked the guard and walked back towards Helen.

“Was it something Shandra said?”  Helen guessed.  With how she felt right now, if Heather suggested something, she would do it.  If Heather had said she wanted to shave Helen’s head, Helen would have handed her the razor.

“Well, I overheard, or thought I heard, a comment Shandra made to another teammate.  The rest of the team had cut their hair and Shandra mentioned how epic it would be if I did.  Given how long it was, I could cut a lot off and still have a lot left.  I don’t think she knew I heard it.  But I did, and it was all I could think about.”  Heather turned on the clippers and thrust them up through Helen’s hair.  As the clippers ran up Helen’s neck, piles of hair fell to the ground.  This action was repeated several times, and it left about a half inch of hair in its wake.  “Never would I have even thought about doing something so drastic, but Shandra seemingly had this power over me.  Suddenly, I couldn’t not do it.”

Helen understood exactly what Heather meant.  She couldn’t help but draw a parallel as she thought back to the beginning of the semester.  The idea of even having an inch cut off her hair terrified her, and now here she was getting most of her hair buzzed off and not even flinching.

“But if I was going to do it, then I might as well really go for it.  This wasn’t going to be a simple haircut.  I decided that if I made this sacrifice, it ALL needed to go.  I thought it would impress Shandra more than just cutting my hair short.  I agonized over my decision, and it pained me for days, but I knew it was going to happen.”  Heather turned off the clippers as she surveyed Helen’s head.  “It wasn’t just a haircut either.  My hair was my life, and I had never done anything like what was about to happen.  I knew I would feel exposed and I wouldn’t be able to hide behind my hair anymore.  So, this change would apply to my clothes as well.”

“You were basically naked!”  Helen exclaimed.  This story was getting even better than she imagined.

“No, not quite.”  Heather laughed at the thought, “Although, I might as well have been.  I just wore a sports bra instead of a shirt or a bodysuit, and it did not go unnoticed by the team.”  She chuckled again.  “It was a big deal at the time, and now I rarely wear more than that.”  Heather walked over to the counter and mixed some colors together.  “I’m going to do your color now.  Then when it’s done, I’ll finish your cut and send you on your way.”

“You’ll finish the story while we’re waiting on my color, though, right?”  Helen was eager to hear the rest and couldn’t imagine if Heather had her wait again for the conclusion of the story.

“I wanted to get a little workout in.  I didn’t think there was much more left to tell.  You can see what happened since then.”  Heather walked back to Helen and started to apply the color solution to Helen’s hair.

“Oh, go ahead.  I would never want to interfere with your workout.  But this story seems far from over.  You’ve just gotten to the best part.”  Helen gushed.

Heather smirked.  It fascinated her that someone could be so interested in her life.  This NEVER would have happened to her a year and a half ago, but then there’s a lot that never would have happened a year and a half ago.

RESIGNATION

“Anna, I won’t accept this.”  Emma told her protégé.  “And you’re going on the trip.  For you, it’s mandatory.”

Anna had asked for a private meeting with Coach Emma.  She took the team’s competition loss hard.  She was ready to resign as captain and contemplated whether she should quit the team altogether.  Additionally, she also had no desire to go on the spring break trip as she felt she didn’t deserve it.  Emma was doing her best to talk her out of it.

“But Emma… I let this team down.  I don’t deserve this team.  Please just let me resign and move on.”  Anna pleaded.

“Why exactly do you feel you let the team down?  Who says you don’t deserve this team?”  Emma leaned forward.  “Anna, can I ask you a question?  Let’s say you weren’t captain.  I know you kind of fell into the role by default.  Suppose Katie never left and she was the captain, but everything else is the same.  The team is the same, and the results are the same.  And in this situation, Katie feels the same way you do.  Would you blame her for the team’s loss?”

“Of course not, it’s not her…”  Anna trailed off, as she realized what she was about to say.  She looked up at Emma, “fault.”  She paused for a moment, then sighed.  “Okay, I see your point.”

“Anna, we had an amazing season.  You did a great job as captain.  You had so much thrown at you, and you handled it all.  I’m proud of you and I know for a fact the rest of the team is as well.  Please go enjoy yourself.  You deserve the break and we’ll rebound next season.”

“Okay, Emma.”  Anna smiled for the first time in weeks.  “I promise I’ll do better and not sulk anymore.  You can count on me.”

“That’s what I want to hear.”  Emma smiled as she ripped up Anna’s resignation letter.

CLIENT’S COMMITTMENT

The timer went off and Heather finished her set.  She dismounted off her bar and headed back towards Helen.  Helen got up from her chair, and they both made their way over to the sink.

“So, Betty and I bonded over our mutual hatred for Shandra.”  Heather continued her story, as she had given Helen some of the other details during her set breaks.  “Betty’s my girlfriend now.  She’s the one who encouraged me to go for the complete shave.  She helped me pick out and paid for some of my brand-new clothes.  Even Betty’s impressed with how far I’ve come.”

“I guess, ultimately, you should thank Shandra?”  Helen observed.  “It seems like she was the catalyst for all of this.  If it wasn’t for her, your hair might still be long, and you’d still be all covered up.”

“I suppose you’re right.”  Heather admitted.  “I love the person I’ve become.  I love what I do.  If I was given an opportunity to go back and reset everything, as long as I knew what I know now, I wouldn’t want to change things.  In the moment, I’m sure there was so much doubt.  But now, I don’t have much negative to say about what happened.”

Heather helped Helen up and they made their way back to the barber chair, where Helen sat back down.  Heather combed out the top layers of Helen’s very short hair.  With each successive cut, Helen’s wavy hair had gotten more voluminous.  Now, with almost no length left to speak of, what little hair Helen did have was out of control.  Heather spent a lot of time working the hair, trying to get it to lay flat.  She combed it, brushed it, and thinned it out.  Eventually she got it close to what she was going for.  With a final few snips, Heather stepped back.

“Alright, you’re done.”  Heather declared.

Helen squealed in delight as she finally got to see what style Heather chose.  She was excited.  She knew she would love her new look no matter what it was.  She couldn’t believe the transformation that had taken place, but after Heather’s story, she was even more confident that she was on the right path.  If Heather’s life as a sheltered, influenced, college student turned out as well as it did, then surely her own life as a poor college student could go just as well.  Right?

As Helen stood in front of the mirror, the anticipation started to build.  “I’ve got some kind of a pixie cut, don’t I?”  she inquired.

“Close, but not exactly.”  Heather answered without giving anything else away.  Then she pulled away the curtain and revealed the mirror.

Helen gasped at the image before her.  It was unexpected.  Her former self would be shocked, but she had changed and she liked it.

“I don’t know what to say…  I don’t even know where to start.”  Helen struggled to get the words out.

“Well, my original plan was for a bowl cut.  Your hair had other plans.”  Heather explained.

“So, even my hair rejected the bowl cut.”  Helen chuckled, as she referred to how she previously discarded the style as an option when she drew cards.

“Yeah, so I figured that since you’ve basically committed to short hair at this point, and you seemed game for anything, so I wasn’t that worried about it.  I just kept cutting.  Hopefully, you approve.”

“Of the cut or the color?”  Helen grimaced.  The color was certainly different.  “I guess as long as I avoid painting my face white, I won’t get mistaken for the Joker.”

“I wouldn’t worry about it.  Doesn’t the Joker have lime green hair?  Yours is much darker.”  Heather pointed out.

Well, Helen hadn’t given Heather any guidelines or boundaries.  At least she ended up with something close to what she wanted even if she didn’t express it.  She’d still be back again soon.

“Just so you know…  If you come back again soon and we play the game again, I want you to be prepared because you’ll probably end up with a buzzcut.  You can roll the dice to see what the length ends up being.”  Heather cautioned.  It really depended on how Helen felt.

“Oh, I’ll be back.  You can count on that.”  Helen smiled as she hugged Heather.  She skipped out of the room.  Strangely enough, she even looked forward to the idea of a buzzcut.  The life of a poor college student meant she was no longer a long-haired girl.  She really wanted to know how short her hair would end up.  The idea of ending up bald no longer terrified her.  After all, if Heather could pull it off, why couldn’t she?

RUNNING MATES

As they prepared for their cheer competition, Heather and Tabitha had increased their morning run.  Now that the competition was over, Tabitha wondered whether they would go back to their original route.  However, Heather wasn’t about to change anything, so that doubled distance became her new route.  Tabitha didn’t want to end their runs and she enjoyed Heather’s company, so Tabitha reluctantly agreed to keep the increased distance.  She hated to admit it, but she felt more energetic and revitalized than she ever imagined.

“Are we doing this during our vacation as well?”  Tabitha asked as they approached the Cheer house after their run.

“I will be.  You can do whatever you choose.  I have come to enjoy your company and the challenge you provide.”  Heather answered.  “I told you, I run every day, no matter what.  My day doesn’t feel complete without it.”

“No, I’m in.  I just wanted to check.  I’m so excited about this trip.  I can’t imagine a better way to relax than just lounging by the pool all day.”  Tabitha gushed.  “Looks like I get an early start on my tan.”  She paused as a thought occurred to her.  “Do I need to pack anything else besides my bikinis?”

“Well, I suppose not.”  Heather chuckled, “During the day, you’ll be fine with just bikinis as we tend to just chill around the house, lounge by the pool, or swim in it.  We do tend to get dressed up and go out at night, so one or two ‘fancier’ outfits would be a good idea.”

“Done!”  Tabitha excitedly headed to her room to get ready and finish packing.

Heather also was excited to pack and really looked forward to a few days away.  However, she also knew there were a few headshaves that she needed to take care of before they left.

VACATION MODE ACTIVATED

Betty wasn’t typically a leader, yet she found herself taking charge once again.  It was because she had been there before and Emma trusted her.  As she entered the final weeks of her senior year, she was excited to get away.  She didn’t look forward to the responsibility that came with the trip, though.  Nevertheless, she drove away with Heather, Madison, and Tabitha in tow.  Right behind them, Anna had Janie, Jenny and Jessie in her car.

A few hours later, Betty drove past a familiar sight.

“Hey, that’s the place we stayed last time!”  Madison declared.

“It’s where we would have stayed this time too, but we’re a bigger group so we got a bigger place.  Amber helped me find it.”  Betty remarked.  She looked over at her girlfriend, who had fallen asleep.  It was a much needed and deserved nap.  She wanted Heather to take a break and enjoy a few days off, though she had promised Amber that Heather would be able to deal with her and Chloe’s hair while they were there.

It was only a few minutes later when Betty pulled into the driveway of a similar, but slightly larger, house.  Shortly afterwards, another car pulled into the driveway then Anna and her passengers piled out.

The group made their way inside and spent some time exploring the house. There were six bedrooms in total.  Betty and Heather would share the master bedroom, while Anna and Janie would also share a bedroom.  Everyone else got their own room, with Jenny and Jessie each grabbing the first-floor rooms while Madison and Tabitha occupied the other two on the second floor.  Once that was settled, everyone changed into their bikinis and made their way outside to the pool.  Anna, Heather and Janie quickly dove in and splashed around, while the others weren’t quite as fast to get in the water.  Jenny, Jessie and Tabitha all wanted to take advantage of the late afternoon sun and get a start on their tan.  Anna and Jenny were in bandeaus, while Heather, Janie and Jessie wore halter string bikinis.  Tabitha went with a micro bikini, as she wanted to avoid tan lines.

Madison had truly become a long-haired girl.  She had gotten past the hard part and was more dedicated than ever.  She was proud of her hair, and with the rest of the team happy with their bald and buzzed heads, she began to flaunt it.  Once they came back from the competition, Madison wore her hair down more often than not.  She even surprised herself.  However, she spent more time on her hair than ever before.  So, while she started the day with her hair down, the wind on the drive became too much to handle so it quickly ended up in a low ponytail.  Now that it was time to head out back and join the rest of her team at the pool, she was determined to avoid the drama and tension from the last time.

“Madison!  Come join us!”  Anna shouted from the pool.

“I’m planning on it!”  Madison smiled, excitedly making her way towards the pool.  The young freshman showed off her figure in a lime green bandeau top and side tie bottoms.  Her long hair piled high on top of her head in a giant messy bun.  As she slowly entered the pool, she kept her sunglasses on and her head above the water.  But at least she was willingly in the water.

This was how they spent their afternoon, with Betty popping outside occasionally to visit.  Betty may have happily kept a bald head, but she was still technically a red head, and her fair skin did not do well in the blazing hot sun.  On one of her visits outside, Betty called Anna and Heather over.

“What do we want to do about dinner tonight?”  Betty asked.  “I spoke with Amber.  She and Chloe can’t wait to see us, especially Heather.  Amber said Chloe got really excited when she found out we planned to visit.  They are both working tonight, but Amber said it would be okay if we went to the restaurant, but we didn’t have to.  I let her know we were a larger group this time, and she said she’d work it out.”

“Honestly, I want to see them, but I’m just as happy to have a quiet night in.  I think we let everyone just chill tonight and go out tomorrow.”  Anna weighed in.

“I’ll do whatever.”  Heather added.

“Well, they are both off all day tomorrow and I think they wanted to stop by.  They might even spend the entire day with us.”  Betty mentioned.  “As long as we didn’t have any objections, of course.”

“I’m good with that.”  Anna confirmed.  She turned to Heather.  “I’m sure you’ll be the major draw.”

“Chloe has really embraced her new identity.”  Betty added.  “She’s been anxious for Heather to come back.  She’s ready for the next step – whatever it is.”

“I’m glad to hear she’s adapted so well.”  Heather remarked.

The girls all had a quiet evening together, as they enjoyed the company and the surroundings.  Some enjoyed a midnight swim, a few called it an early night, while others just stayed in and played games.  Eventually morning came, and they leisurely spent their time however they wanted.  Only Anna, Betty, and Heather knew their friends would come by, although Madison did inquire if they would get together at some point.  So, Madison was beyond thrilled when she got to greet Amber and Chloe when they showed up later that morning.

“Chloe!”  Madison, clad in a red string-bikini top and shorts with her hair in two braids, perfectly divided between the two colors, reached out to hug the waitress.  “I’m so happy to see you.”  As she pulled away, she acknowledged Chloe’s companion.  “Hi, Amber.”

Amber smirked as she made her way inside.  “Hello, Madison.  Nice to see you again.”  She was in a brown tank top and ripped jeans.  Her blonde pixie was overgrown.

“Hey, Madison.”  Chloe wore a bright green tank top and jean shorts.  “Your hair looks amazing.”

“Thanks.”  Madison blushed.  “So does yours.”

“Nah, it’s absolute trash.”  Chloe chuckled.  “It’s too long and unruly.”  She reached up and grabbed at her wavy hair, which nearly reached her shoulders.  “And no, the irony of that statement is not lost on me.”

“Well, I’m sure Heather will help with that.”  Madison assured her older friend as they made their way inside.

“Oh, I’ve been looking forward to it.”

They caught up to Amber as they made their way into the main part of the house, where the others were finishing up a late breakfast.

“Hey everyone.  This is Chloe and that’s Amber.”  Madison introduced the pair to her teammates who were there for the first time.  “They’re local friends of ours.  Amber, Chloe, meet more of the team.”

The next few minutes were spent on introductions.  Anna and Betty reacquainted themselves, and of course Heather was the target of everyone’s praise.  Amber and Chloe had the entire day free and told the girls that they planned to take everyone out to a local hotspot for an evening of fun.  Heather would take care of their hair at some point that day, but there was no rush.  Chloe eagerly awaited Heather’s magic, and she made it clear that she was ready for ANYTHING.  Heather would have free reign, with no restrictions or stipulations.  Chloe was excited to see what she would end up with and was ready for something different.

As the girls cleaned up and got ready to head out to the backyard, Chloe looked around and sighed.  After a moment, she reached down to the bottom of her tank top and pulled it off.  She had on a brown sports bra bikini top underneath,

“Wow, Chloe.  You really look great.”  Anna, clad in a blue and yellow bandeau, made her way over.

“Oh, thanks.”  Chloe nervously crossed her arms in front of her exposed body.  “It’s new.  This is totally new for me.”

“And what’s that?”  Anna gasped and swatted at Chole’s arm.  “Is that a tattoo?”  Anna successfully managed to lift Chloe’s arm away, exposing a small butterfly near her ribcage on her left side.

“Oh, yeah.  That’s new, too.”  Chloe confessed.  “I just got it a few weeks ago.  Amber took me to her guy.  It hurt a lot, but I like it.”

They quickly caught up with the rest of the group, who had made their way outside.  While everyone was in various forms of bikinis, they all had different goals.  Janie and Heather were the swimmers.  They always wanted to be IN the pool whenever one was available.  Jenny, Jessie, and Tabitha were the tanners and preferred to lay out instead of in the water.  Madison ended up with a combination of both.  Madison always loved the water.  She previously loved to be in it and around it, but that was back when she had shorter hair.  Now that it was long, she discovered the amount of work that was needed to maintain her hair made the pool less appealing.

Betty also found herself between both groups.  Her fair skin made it difficult to stay out in the sun for long periods, and her bald head made her even more exposed.  Their other trips were in the fall, so she had a little more leeway to be outside, but the hot sun played a much more important role at this time of year.  As a result, Betty tended to stay inside or in the shade a bit more.

Amber wasn’t sure what her hair would look like in a few hours so she might as well take advantage of the pool while she could.  It wasn’t every day that she had this kind of access.

Before Anna went into the pool with her fellow swimmers, Chloe needed to determine where she wanted to go.  It was all so new for her.  This was not an area she had previously given a lot of thought to.  But Chloe adapted quickly and decided that she wanted to spend the time with her new friends.  She quizzed Heather on what she had in mind for her hair.  Heather asked if she REALLY wanted to know and Chloe had to admit that there was a certain excitement in the unknown.  Last time she was so nervous and scared to truly enjoy the experience.  This time would be much different, and she really looked forward to whatever Heather had planned.

Morning quickly turned into afternoon.  After a light lunch, most of the girls spent more time outside, but it was also time for haircuts.  Amber decided Chloe would go first, since she couldn’t bear to wait any longer.  Betty ended up as Heather’s assistant, since she was inside anyway.  Plus, she wanted to spend time with her girlfriend.  Even if it wasn’t the alone time she had hoped for, she would take what she could get.  So, after a quick dip in the pool, Heather came back into the house to find Chloe in a chair with Betty by her side.  The smile on Chloe’s face couldn’t be bigger.

EMBRACING CHANGE

It was different for Chloe this time around.  She remembered that life-changing day, roughly five months ago, when she first sat in Heather’s chair.  It seemed like it was so long ago.  The girl she was then wouldn’t recognize the woman she had become.  Back then her hair was long and the idea of even the slightest trim terrified her.  So, it was a really big deal when Heather chopped her hair off above the shoulders.  But that was only the beginning.  Chloe was timid and conservative in every sense of the word.  She had recently learned to open up a bit more, and now she was thriving.

“I’m so happy you’re here, Heather.  I can’t wait to see what you have planned for this mop.”  Chloe reached her hand up into her hair.  “I was so close to taking scissors to it myself.  I am so done with long hair.  Have your way with me!”  She explained as she laughed uncomfortably.

“I’m sorry it’s been so long.”  Heather combed through Chloe’s hair.  “I’ve been super busy.  I thought you and Amber were supposed to come visit…”  She continued to look over Chloe’s hair.  “It DOES need a lot of work.  Though it’s funny that you consider this long now.”

“Oh my God, Heather! My hair can NEVER touch my shoulders, ever again!”  Chloe stated emphatically.  “Please, please…  CHOP IT ALL OFF!”  She paused a moment, “or you know, whatever you think is best.”  Chloe smiled awkwardly.

Suddenly, Heather held out a chunk of Chloe’s hair.  She reached for her scissors and without further hesitation she closed the scissors around Chloe’s hair near her scalp on the right side.  Chloe and Betty both gasped.  Then Chloe grinned.

“Well, I guess I did say ALL.”

“Oh, I’m not done yet.  There’s still a bit more left to lose, but only on this side.  The left side won’t be nearly as short.”  Heather explained, as she handed the severed hair to Betty and prepared another section.

“That sounds, um…”

“Asymmetrical?”  Heather smiled.  “I never would have given you something like this before, but you seemed so excited and you wanted something different, so I figured it seemed like a perfect time to give you a rather unique style.”  Heather snipped another chunk of Chloe’s hair, right next to the previous one.

“Like when Jessie first cut her hair.”  Betty chimed in.  “Or rather after Evan first fixed her hair.”  She turned towards Chloe as she gathered the latest hair from Heather.  “Chloe, if I know what Heather has planned…” she turned towards Heather and smiled, “and I think I do…”  She turned back to Chloe, “If you are as committed to this new look as you seem to be, then this is perfect for you.”

“I’m committed!”  Chloe exclaimed excitedly.  She trusted Heather and was intrigued by what Heather had planned.  She looked down.  It’s a good thing she liked her new butterfly, as she expected it wouldn’t be hiding much anymore.

With a few quick cuts, the entire right side of Chloe’s head was exposed and her hair reduced to less than an inch.  Heather clipped up the remainder of Chloe’s hair on the left side and reached for her clippers.  She started at the back and worked her way around Chloe’s head, buzzing away all but a half inch of hair.  Heather unpinned Chloe’s hair and the left side tumbled down, nearly untouched.

Heather grabbed her scissors and placed them right below Chloe’s lips on her left side.  She snapped them closed and the hair caught between the blades tumbled to the floor.  Heather moved the scissors around Chloe’s head, moving them higher up with each cut before blending in with the back of her head.  With the rough cut done, Heather moved on to the color.

“So, how do you like being a redhead?”  Heather asked.

“Oh! It’s been amazing!”  Chloe’s face lit up.  “I don’t know what I’ve enjoyed more!”

”So, did you want stick with –”

“NO!  Something new!”  Chloe interrupted.  “I mean whatever you think.  But I’m not against more change.”

“Got it,” Heather couldn’t help but laugh.  “Say no more.”

“Good.  I hoped I wouldn’t have to.”  Chloe exhaled.  “I still don’t know much about any of this.  I trust your judgment.  Whatever you decide is better than whatever I could come up with anyway.  The past few months have been the best of my life!  I can’t wait for what’s to come.”

“No pressure, then.”  Heather started to mix the color.  “Relax, I got you.”

“And I’ve got you.”  Betty chimed in for support.

Heather looked over at Betty and smiled.  She finished preparing the solution and began painting Chloe’s hair.  Chloe was enjoying herself.  She had now fully committed herself to beauty maintenance which was a foreign concept to her the last time around.  Once Heather had finished the color application, there was nothing left to do but wait.  Chloe insisted that Heather go back outside and enjoy herself.  Heather didn’t put up much of a fight, much to Betty’s disappointment, who stayed behind to cater to Chloe.  Betty’s vacation, and more importantly, the time that she wanted to spend with her girlfriend, was not going as she hoped.

POOL GAMES

Heather arrived outside to a lot of laughter and giggles.  Amber, Anna, Janie, and Madison were all in the pool having chicken fights, while Jenny, Jessie, and Tabitha, were in their usual spots on the loungers.

“My sister is going to be so jealous!”  Tabitha exclaimed as Heather approached.  She lay on her stomach with her bikini top untied, to create a smooth and uniform tan.  She lifted her head and leaned up on her elbows.  “With our daily runs and my occasional presence for your workouts at the gym, I’ve never been more fit in my life.  Coupled with this tan…  Oh, my God, Heather, I can’t wait to see the look on Tayna’s face.”  She paused for a moment then smiled and started to laugh.  “And my lack of hair only makes it better.”  She quickly brushed her hand over her buzzed head, which currently sported a few weeks of growth.

“I’m glad to hear you’re doing so well.”  Heather looked over at the pool and then back at Tabitha.  “I really hope you’ll join me in the pool at some point this trip, though.”  Heather started to back away slowly and make her way towards the pool.

“After the sun goes down, and I can’t tan anymore!”  Tabitha shouted back towards her friend, as she flipped over onto her back so her front would match the color on her back.

Heather jumped into the pool, just as Madison fell off Janie and splashed on top of her.

“Good timing!”  Madison declared as they both surfaced.  “Heather, take over for me.”  Madison smiled at her teammate as she made her way towards the pool stairs.

“Oh… okay…” Heather looked towards Madison, and then back towards the rest of the group.  She headed towards Janie.  “I don’t have a lot of time.  I have to get back to Chloe soon.”

“That’s okay.”  Janie dunked under, as Heather climbed onto her shoulders.  Janie stood back up, as she surfaced.  “I doubt we’ll keep this up much longer anyway.”

“Plus, I still expect you to take care of my mess.”  Amber commented as she approached the new team.  “Team A vs Team B, winner take all.”

“A vs B?”  Heather asked.

“B for bald.”  Janie looked up at Heather, “Neither of us have any hair on our heads.”  She looked over at Amber to confirm.  “They’re ‘A’ because Amber and Anna both start with A.”

“And we’ve made for a pretty good team.”  Anna smiled as she attacked Heather.  “I’ve only fallen once.”

“So, Heather, if I give you free reign to do anything you want with my hair, what would you do?”  Amber inquired in a way that indicated how Heather answered mattered.

REVELATIONS AND REVEALS

Betty was never conventionally “hot.”  She was pretty and usually didn’t have too much trouble attracting guys, but she was always the sweet girl next door type.  Things change.  Ever since she reinvented herself over the summer, everything was different.  She could probably attract any guy she desired.  With the looks and the new-found confidence, it was an adjustment.  But she was with Heather, and she was loyal to Heather.

Chloe never had much luck in the boy department.  There had been a few unrequited crushes, and she had been on a couple of dates, but nothing that led anywhere.  She never cared about or put much effort into her appearance.  Until she met Heather.  After her major makeover, Chloe discovered that with a little effort, things had changed for her.  Even after the life-changing haircut and entirely new wardrobe with the help of Amber, Chloe was still adjusting to her new life.  But it was worth it.

Even her present situation made Chloe smile.  She had just gotten her first tattoo, and she already knew it wouldn’t be her last.  Previously, it was not even something that was on her radar.  Then there was the bikini top she had on.  She was so exposed, yet she felt totally comfortable and natural. She was adapting but liked who she was becoming in every way.

Betty and Chloe bonded while they waited, and discovered they had a lot in common.  Besides their shared experiences, they were closer in age than most of the group.  So, the processing time went more quickly than they expected.

“This is my first time in a bikini.”  Chloe confessed.

“You look great.  Hopefully, it won’t be the last?”

“Of course not.”  Chloe smirked as she admitted that.  Then she couldn’t help but chuckle.  “Although, I’m not sure this is the right style for me.”

“You can wear any style that makes you comfortable.”  Betty assured.  “I’m no stranger to bikinis, but this is still a bit new for me.  I used to wear that style a lot.”  Betty sighed.  “Back when I had some extra weight and wanted the extra comfort and support.  You should have no such concerns though.”  Betty pointed out, as she admired Chloe’s figure.

“I’m nothing special.”  Chloe turned red in embarrassment.  “I could NEVER wear what Heather does though.  She’s amazing!”

Betty started to crack up.  “Oh, Chloe…  A year and a half ago, HEATHER never could have worn what she does now.”  She went over and hugged Chloe.  “Ask her about ‘dental floss.’”

“Dental floss?”

“What about dental floss?” Heather inquired, as she had just reentered the room.  She headed towards Chloe, “Come on, let’s get you rinsed.”  She grabbed Chloe’s hand and pulled her towards the sink.

“Oh!  Well, Betty said that I should ask you about ‘dental floss.’”  Chloe remarked as she leaned over the sink.  “This is my first time in a bikini of any kind.  With all of you as an example, I may need to rethink my style…  But I had said that I didn’t think I could ever dress like you.”

“I used to be very covered up and never showed any skin.  At all.  It was just my hands and face.  After I cut off all my hair, I was exposed, and I knew that I was due for a style change.”  Heather explained, as she washed Chloe’s hair.  “I was way out of my element, but Betty was with me, and she knew what she was doing…  Especially with my swimwear.  I still struggled with two-piece suits, since that was already a new experience.  Even something like what you have on now would have been a big deal.  But there was this one that Betty picked out that I was very uncomfortable with.”

“Dental floss?”  Chloe inferred.

“There was nothing there.  It was just a few strings and barely covered anything.”  Heather smiled as she started to dry Chloe’s hair.  “Of course, the irony is that very same ‘dental floss’ probably covers twice as much as what I have on now.  I love my dental floss and now use it as a term of affection… for my bikinis.”

Chloe was in awe.  She was more and more impressed by Heather the more she found out about her. She stood up and let Heather guide her back towards the chair where Betty waited.

“So, I heard about dental floss.”  Chloe informed Betty. “Maybe I’ll get there someday,” she shrugged as she sat down, grinning.

Heather looked over at Betty and winked, then got to work.  With the color done and the baseline of the haircut finished, Heather was focused on the details.   Since Heather had last cut Chloe’s hair, it had only gotten curlier.   Heather wanted to provide Chloe with options but also wasn’t sure how much work she would put in on a regular basis.

“How dedicated are you to a new style?  How much work are you willing to put in?”  Heather asked.

“Oh, um…  I don’t know.  Whatever is necessary, I guess.”  Chloe thought for a moment, then gave a slight chuckle.  “This is all still kinda new.  You know, I never gave much thought or effort to my appearance.  Not to my hair, my clothes, makeup, any of it.  If I spent more than five minutes getting ready it was a lot.”  She exhaled, “That’s all changed now.  I actually care.  So, I put in the effort, I do my hair, I wear better clothes, and my appearance matters.  I’m still learning, but Amber has been a huge help.”

“So…?”  Heather was happy with the way Chloe has handled her new situation, but Heather was unsure if it really answered her question.

“I’ll do whatever I need to keep it up.”  Chloe looked at Heather, “Obviously, the easier the better but don’t let that influence style.  I’m willing to put in the work if it makes a difference.”

“Ideally, something wash and go, then.  I’d like to give you some options, so you can have some variety.”  Heather reassured Chloe. “Either way, we’re playing up those curls.”

“Sounds great!”  Chloe still hadn’t gotten used to the fact that her hair was so curly.  When it was long, she just tied it back in a ponytail nearly every day.  She didn’t realize that the weight and length of her hair had dragged the curls down so much.

Heather got to work.  She had mostly finished the cut, so it was mostly just a little refinement and styling needed.  Just a few minutes later, Heather was done and ready for the reveal.  Chloe bounded towards the bathroom to look in the mirror.  She was excited to see what her new hair looked like.  Heather followed close behind.

“Oh, wow.”  Chloe stared at herself.  She slowly reached her hand up and felt her buzzed hair.  She giggled as she touched the rest of her hair with her other hand.  “Wow, wow.”  She turned towards Heather who watched from the doorway.  Her smile couldn’t be bigger.

“I take it you approve?”

“Oh my God, YES!”  Chloe squealed.  “My hair is SO SHORT now.”  She continued to rub her head.  “Well, most of it anyway.”

“I never could have done this for you last time, but you seemed ready this time.”  Heather began.  “So, you have a combination of an asymmetrical bob with an undercut, and you’ve got lots of options.”  Heather started towards Chloe.  “If you part your hair like this, you’ve got this look, but you can also wear it the other way.”  Heather flipped Chloe’s hair to the other side.  “And because of the way its cut, it appears a lot shorter.”  Heather noted as Chloe’s hair fell to her ear.

Chloe studied every word.  She was in for some fun with her hair.

“You can also pile all your hair on top of your head and really show off the buzzed sides.”  Heather showed Chloe.  “Though it may take some work and styling to stay that way.”

Chloe smiled and nodded.  She was up for the challenge, and it would be worth the effort.

“I also lightened your hair.  So, it’s a nice rich strawberry blonde now.”

“I love it.” Chloe grinned.  “Everything!  All of it!”  She turned back towards the mirror, puffed out her chest and put her hands on her waist, the image before her was not one she was used to, but one she would strive to live for every day.  “It’s perfect.”

BACKYARD CONFESSIONS

Amber and the rest of the cheerleaders were in the backyard, enjoying their time in and around the pool.  It wasn’t long before they were joined by a newly styled Chloe.

“Amber!  Heather said to head in so she could get started on your hair!”  Chloe declared to her friend.

Amber looked towards the voice.  “Chloe! Ya look AMAZIN’!  Ya rock, girl!  Doncha’ just luv it!”  She headed towards her friend and offered her a gigantic hug.  “There’s no going back now.”

“Nope, definitely not.”   Chloe blushed.  She still needed to get used to all the attention, since she no longer desired to hide or blend in.

Amber headed inside as several other cheerleaders approached Chloe.

“Jessie!  She’s got your hair.”  Jenny stated.

“Not anymore! Those days are long gone.”  Jessie grinned as she vigorously rubbed her bald head.  “She looks great though.”

Chloe looked between the two sisters, with a confused look.

“My hair used to be really long.”  Jessie explained, “until it wasn’t.  So, when I first got my hair cut it was similar to your current look.”  She looked between Jenny and Chloe, laughing.  “Obviously, it didn’t stay that way.”

Chloe was really excited about her new look.  She looked at the bald cheerleader, studying her.  She loved her new hair and knew it would never be long again.  There was a difference between short hair and no hair, though.  For the first time in a while, Chloe felt nervous, but Jessie looked great and she seemed supremely confident.

“I never thought I’d love it as much as I do.  I was so scared when the idea first came up.”  Jessie smiled.

“Jessie stop,” Jenny gently scolded her sister, then turned back towards Chloe. “You look great though.  Don’t copy my crazy sister.”  Jenny added, noting Chloe’s shift in body language.  “Not everyone is meant to be bald.”  Jenny put some emphasis on that last part.  She wanted her hair to grow since the competition ended.  She currently sported a buzzcut and it was not her favorite look.  “Come, join us.”  Jenny reached for Chloe’s hand to accompany them back towards the loungers.

“I suddenly feel overdressed,” Chloe looked down at what she had on.  Initially, she was nervous about how little she had on.  But with her new style, plus being around everyone else and being so quickly accepted, it had given her newfound confidence.

“I can help!”  Madison exclaimed as she grabbed Chloe’s hand and led her back towards the house.  “We’re a similar size, I think.  I’ve got a bunch of extra options you can choose from.”

BIG PLANS

For Amber, it was all about the color.  She preferred her hair short.  It hadn’t touched her shoulders since her early teens.  It also hadn’t been a natural color since then.  In that time, she had just about every short style and color imaginable.  She got bored easily and it was a fun way to change her look.  By far, her favorite person who ever touched her hair was Heather.  If she had her way no one else would ever touch her hair again.  Therefore, Heather had free reign to do as she pleased.  Amber trusted her completely.

Heather was an artist and Amber would always hold a special place in her heart.  She was the one that started it all.  Sure, Emma was her first headshave, but Amber was truly her first “client.”  She was the one responsible for the current dream Heather was living.  Amber started her down this path and gave her the confidence needed and forever changed her life.

Heather had already finished the initial cut.  She buzzed Amber’s hair down to a #3 all over.  She was currently crafting the bottom of Amber’s head.  Heather had really gotten into design work.  It really allowed her to show off her creative side, but those opportunities were few and far between, so she took advantage of the opportunity before her.  Then she would get to color it in.  It was easily her most elaborate work yet, but she knew Amber was the perfect client for it.

“Ya know, Heather, I’m down for whatever it is yer workin’ on, but if you’ve got some elaborate plan, I hope yer gunna be around to help maintain it.”  Amber was game for whatever, and looked forward to whatever Heather had planned, but she was a bit concerned about how it might look as it grew out.  She used to get her hair done quite regularly, but now that she used Heather exclusively, her hair was at the mercy of whenever Heather was able to stop by.

Heather knew Amber was right, but she was too far in.  Those were details to work out later.  She knew Chloe needed more frequent attention as well.  If only there wasn’t such a distance between them, and if Heather wasn’t at the mercy of others to get places.  She considered Amber and Chloe her friends and was determined to do whatever was needed for them.

“I’m sure something can be worked out.”  Betty answered.  She moved closer to Heather and cradled her, while she softly caressed her shoulders.  She loved to watch Heather work and was truly impressed with how she had developed over the past year and a half.

“Betty, please.”  Heather huffed, “I need to focus.”  She shrugged Betty away.

Betty shirked away, as Heather finished the cut.  Then she started to mix the color and strategically began to paint Amber’s head carefully, within the design she had just created.    As the color processed, Amber offered a preview of where she and Chloe were taking the team later that night.

“It’s called Stinky’s.  It’s the local hotspot, and not touristy at all.  But it’s good food, good music, and should be a good time fer all.”  Amber began.  “We’ll take two cars.  Chloe can ride with ya, and ye’ll follow me.  I’ll take the other group.”

“So, we’re not going to your restaurant?”  Betty asked.

“No, dear.  I work there I don’t eat there.”  Amber laughed, “Look that place is great and I have nutin’ negative to say.  But I’m there enough.  Ya don’t shit where ya eat or however that saying goes.”

GETTING READY

Everyone was excited about their night out.  It was difficult for some to leave the backyard, but as the sun began to set it slowly emptied out.  The last one to go back inside was Heather, who had spent the least amount of time outside.  However, she also took the least time to get ready.  Madison took the longest, and it was entirely because of her hair.

“I feel so out of place.”  Chloe had adapted quickly.  She had an outfit planned for the evening, but just like earlier, she wanted to better fit in with the rest of the group.

“You look fine.  What did you have in mind?”  Janie, in a bedazzled crop top and hip huggers, questioned.

“Just –” Chloe looked around at the others, all dressed fashionably but not afraid to show their bodies, then at herself in a flannel button down with jean shorts and cowboy boots.  “Less?”

“What about the tank top you came here in?”  Anna chimed in.

“I have that on under this.”  Chloe indicated her shirt.  “I guess I could undo a few buttons?”

“Do you trust me?”  Betty walked over to Chloe, grabbed her hand and started to drag Chloe off before she could answer, but she didn’t protest.

Madison made her way down the stairs.  It hadn’t intended to be a big entrance, yet all eyes went to her anyway.  She was dressed comfortably in a bright purple razorback tank top with short shorts and sandals.  However, what was really eye catching was her hair.  Worn perfectly straight and falling just a few inches above her waist, it was perfectly parted down the middle. The left side was a vibrant teal while the right side was icy blonde.

“Holy shit, girl.  Yer stunnin’” Amber walked towards Madison.  “We just gotta get ya a better bra, so ya show those girls off.  Ya get any guy ya want.”  Amber cupped her hands over Madisons breasts, while Madison chuckled uncomfortably with a nervous look on her face.

“Hey Amber, that’s a pretty awesome look Heather gave you, eh?”  Anna tried to change the subject, since she noticed Madison’s discomfort but didn’t want to draw attention to it.

“Oh, yeah.”  Amber smiled as she walked away from Madison.  “I’ve always worn my hair short and love crazy colors, so Heather really explores the limits.  I love every look she’s done on me.”  Amber reached her hand up and touched her head and squealed.  “I’ve never had my hair so short but never been so happy with the results.”  Amber’s hair was buzzed with a #3 guard on top, which tapered down to the skin.  Heather had carved an intricate design onto her head, filled with stars, hearts, stripes, diamonds, and starbursts.  The top of her hair was dyed a bright sky blue while the lower portion of her head was various shades of red, green, yellow, orange and purple, matching the different shapes on her head.

A few minutes later Chloe emerged from down the hall with a giant smile plastered across her face, with Betty right behind.

“Oh, I feel much better now.”  Chloe declared.  “Betty is a miracle worker.”

Betty had removed the sleeves from the flannel shirt and told Chloe to take off her tank top.  She then had Chloe put on the now sleeveless shirt.  It hung unbuttoned, while Betty grabbed the bottom of the shirt and had tied the corners off just below the bust line.  The butterfly tattoo that Chloe had been previously unsure of was now on full display.  It was bold.  It was daring.  Her hair was piled on top of her head, and the buzzed undercut Heather had given her earlier fully exposed.  She looked totally different from the person who had arrived at the house earlier that day.  It was exactly what Chloe wanted.

“Now you’re putting the rest of us to shame.”  Janie pointed out.

“So, I guess no more hiding.”  Anna smirked, as she walked towards her new friend.

Chloe scoffed, “Would you seriously hide any of this if you were me?”  She giggled, as she and Anna quickly embraced.

A few minutes later, they piled into the cars and took off.  It was an evening of fun, so everyone could really let loose.  Chloe continued to come out of her shell, while it was a rare and refreshing night out for all involved.  They partied late into the night and closed the place down.  Everyone returned to the house, then Amber and Chloe left after Betty and Anna promised they’d all stop by at their restaurant the next evening.

BAD BREAK

“Hey kiddo, how you feeling?”  Betty asked as they started to get ready for bed.

“Oh, it was an amazing night.  I had such a good time.  It was so nice to spend time with everyone.  I haven’t done a lot of that outside of cheer events.”  Heather gushed.  “Chloe really seemed to have a good time.  I’m so happy for her.”

“Uh, huh.  Yeah, it was pretty great.”  Betty dismissed.

“Do you think I should get a tattoo?” Heather asked nonchalantly.

“What?  No!”  Betty was taken aback.  “Why would you even ask that?  Is that something you’ve been thinking about?”

“Not really.  But I noticed how much fun Chloe had tonight.  She looks really good and I’m glad I could play a small part in it.”

“Oh, kiddo.  You were more than a small part.”  Betty smiled, but then quickly turned serious.  “So, um…”  Betty exhaled quickly, “What are your top three passions?”

“Three?  Oh, that’s easy: hair, fitness and cheer.  Just don’t ask me to rank them.”  Heather let out a soft chuckle.

“Uh huh…” Betty expected that answer.  “What about four?”

Heather looked at Betty and thought for a minute.  “I have no idea.  Those three things take up so much of my life.  I mean my school is important and that’s basically the rest of my day, but I wouldn’t say it’s a passion.”

“Yeah, I agree…”  Betty sat down on the bed and indicated that Heather should join her.  “What about hobbies? Interests?”  She paused and looked directly at Heather, “Anything? Anyone?”  Her voice cracked slightly on that last word.

“What’s going on?  Betty?  You’re being weird…”  Heather slowly sat down next to Betty.

“Who’s you’re favorite person?”  Betty reached her arm around Heather and held her close.

“Well, Nikki has probably become my best friend.  I love to hang out with her, and we do so much together.”  Heather’s face lit up when she talked about Nikki.  “I’ve gotten pretty close with Tabitha, too.  She’s been a great running partner.”

“I see…”  Betty exhaled.  She had already decided what needed to happen, but this just confirmed it.  Still, she wanted the answer to one last thing.  “So, what about me?  What am I?  How do I fit in?”

“You’re my girlfriend.”  Heather answered directly and without hesitation.

“Am I?”  Betty questioned.  She cared for Heather deeply and hoped they would be friends for life, but she was distressed about their relationship recently and wondered what Heather really thought.

“Of course.”  Heather smiled as she looked directly into Betty’s eyes.  The smile slowly faded as she noticed Betty’s reaction.  “Aren’t we?”

“Heather, I care for you deeply.  I hope we stay friends forever.  We formed an unbreakable bond.  I never would have embraced my shaved head or made any of these other changes without you.”  She let a small smile grace her face as she indicated her body and rubbed her hand over her head.

“Betty, what’s going on?  You’re worrying me.”  Heather gazed at Betty, fearful of what Betty was saying.

“Remember when you first started to shave my head?  You couldn’t get through it.  It even became great foreplay for us.  All I’d have to do was sit down and wait.  Once my head was lathered you were like putty.  I wouldn’t even have to take off my clothes.  When’s the last time that happened?  When’s the last time shaving my head got you wet or turned you on?”

Heather sat in silence.  She thought about what Betty had just said.  She didn’t want to admit it, but there was truth to what Betty said.

“What we have isn’t love.”  Betty continued.  “Not in that romantic kind of way, at least.  I’m still really into guys and you, well, I don’t really know what attracts you…  But Nikki seems REALLY into you, and you light up every time you hear her name.  You will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart, but I think we’re better off as just really good friends.”

“Betty…” Heather was on the verge of tears.

“Deep down, you know it’s true.  I know it’s hard, and I hate to do this to you.  I don’t want you to be alone tonight so I’m going to go down the hall and switch rooms with Tabitha.  We don’t have to make a big deal about this, but I’ll give you space for a bit if you need it.”

Betty slowly got up, gathered a few personal things and slowly headed for the door.  She opened the door and exited down the hallway.  A few minutes later there was a soft knock on the door, as Tabitha slowly opened the door and peeked her head in.

“Oh, honey…”  Tabitha consoled Heather as she stepped into the room.  She dropped a small bag on the floor and sat next to Heather.  They just sat in silence for a few minutes, while Tabitha held Heather.
