It all started when director Sukumar decided to break every rule the Telugu film industry had ever followed for an item song. He wanted something raw, something no one had dared to do. In a closed-door meeting with Sreeleela, he shared his vision. “this time in item song you should have little more guts to dance,” he said.

She was stunned when he added, “You’ll be completely bald… bald and bold.” At first, Sreeleela laughed nervously, thinking it was a joke. But Sukumar was dead serious. “Imagine the shock in the theatre when you appear. Gundu head, jasmine blouse, red skirt… it will burn the screen.”

Sreeleela had never taken such a risk in her career. She stared at Sukumar, disbelief in her eyes. “Sir, full bald? And I have to keep it secret too?” Sukumar nodded firmly. “Yes, Leela. Until the movie release. No photos, no leaks. It’s a surprise explosion on screen. Promise cheyyali.” Sreeleela narrowed her eyes. “Okay sir… but I have a condition too.”

“I want a real human hair wig. Top quality. If I have to hide it, I want the best.” Sukumar smiled slowly, impressed. “Done. You’ll get the best. But remember… you’re not just acting here. You’re rewriting image history.” She smirked. “Sare sir. Let’s do this. Gundu Maharani loading.” As she stood near the door, looking thoughtful.

“Sir… Gundu look is ok, but where should I get my head shaved? If I go to any saloon, someone might recognize me…” Sukumar leaned back in his chair, thinking. “Hmm… We can’t take that risk, This look has to be a surprise. Do one thing, Leela… why don’t you do it yourself? Alone. It’ll be safer… and You’ll feel every bit of the transformation.” Sreeleela looked surprised but intrigued. “You mean… self head shave ?”

“Yes. This is your journey. Let the change begin with your own hands.” She nodded slowly, a determined glint in her eyes. “Okay sir… message me when everything’s ready. I’ll be prepared.”   With that, she turned and walked out silently—her mind already racing, heart beating fast. A bold step awaited.

After few weeks she gets the confirmation call. Sreeleela watches few YouTube videos on how to do self head shave. Sreeleela stood before the mirror, her heart pounding as she picked up the scissors with trembling hands. Snip. The sound was jarring. Chunk after chunk fell into the basin. The air already felt cooler around her neck. She stared at her uneven, cropped reflection—half shocked, half thrilled.

Next came the trimmer. She switched it on; the buzzing filled the silence. She hesitated, then pressed it to her scalp. The vibration sent a strange sensation through her. With each pass, more of her hair vanished, leaving behind soft stubble. She couldn’t stop running her fingers over it, feeling a rush of excitement. She applied warm foam, massaging it gently.

Slowly, carefully, she glided the blade over her scalp. Smoothness followed every stroke. She took her time, savoring the quiet intimacy of the act. It was oddly calming—like she was shedding not just hair, but something heavier. When done, she looked up. Her head gleamed. Her eyes sparkled. She was bald—and she had done it herself. And in that moment, she had never felt more powerful.

The shoot was done in a tight schedule of 3 days inside a set that resembled a Rayalaseema village bar. Before the first day of shoot, the stylist gently tilted Sreeleela’s head as he applied warm foam and began shaving her already bald scalp again. The razor glided smoothly. After the shave, he massaged in a cooling cream, followed by a shining lotion that made her head glow like moonlight under the bar set lights.

Each time, Sreeleela sat with eyes closed, smiling softly. What began as a risk now felt freeing. Every pass of the blade she owned that look, that song, every moment. Bald and bold, she stepped onto set like a storm. No phones, no leaks, full security.  The song titled “Gundu Maharani Bar Ki Vasthava” was shot with Nagarjuna dancing beside her.

Drunken extras danced around while Sreeleela owned the stage—her glowing gundu head bouncing with every beat, jasmine flowers on her blouse swaying, her eyes burning with energy. Sukumar made sure her bald look was kept secret until the release. Even while leaving the set, she wore scarves and cap upon the wig for double protection.

On the release day, audiences were shocked. The first time she removed her scarf in the song, people gasped in theatres. But the silence was quickly replaced by whistles, claps, and cheers. No one had ever seen a bald heroine like this, owning the stage with raw energy. Her gleaming head, under bar lights, became the heartbeat of the song. A new trend was born. The theater didn’t just watch—they felt it.

Sreeleela set the screen and their hearts on fire. The internet exploded. Her bald avatar was all over reels, tweets, and fan edits. “Gundu Maharani” became a trending hashtag. Girls from colleges, influencers on TikTok and Instagram started recreating the look, even shaving their heads to match her style.

It wasn’t just a song anymore, it was a movement. Sreeleela went viral overnight. Media called her boldest performer of the decade. Awards followed. Interviews poured in. Directors lined up for her. She had not just danced—she had roared on stage. And even she, looking back, felt powerful.

In one quiet moment, staring at her bald reflection again before another shoot, she smiled and said to herself, “Idhi naa style… I didn’t follow the trend, I created it.” That’s how a single item song, born from a wild idea, turned into a national storm. Gundu Maharani became a name no one would forget.
