At the age of 18, Hanna was modeling, and her agent called her in for a meeting. Hanna arrived at the agency’s office at the agreed time. Her manager explained that they had secured a very lucrative job for her. It involved finding so-called “average teenage girls,” photographing them as they were, and then having a professional hairdresser, makeup artist, and stylist work on them. Afterward, they would take a new photo series. The only catch was that the girls would have no say in how their looks would be changed.
At first, Hanna was hesitant, but after hearing the financial offer included with the proposal, she decided she wouldn’t mind even if they shaved her bald. However, she hoped it wouldn’t come to that. A week later, on Saturday morning, Hanna went to the location for the photoshoot. The client requested that she come in an outfit and makeup that she would wear on a regular school day. So she dressed casually, with simple makeup and her long black hair loose, reaching down to her shoulders.
At the venue, she met the team: the hairdresser Regi, the makeup artist Zsani, the stylist Andi, and the photographer Jázmin. They first took the “before” photos. Then, following Regi, they entered the hairdressing room. The room was relatively large, with a big table featuring drawers below and shelves above. A mirror hung above the table, and in front of it was a swivel chair. Hairdressing tools and a sink for washing hair were placed on the table.
Hanna sat in the chair as Regi pulled out a clip to pin her hair up on top of her head. She then grabbed a hairdressing cape from the shelf and draped it over Hanna.
“When I saw your picture, Hanna,” Regi said, “I immediately thought that you have such a beautiful head shape that it shouldn’t be hidden. So I’m going to quickly cut off this long mane and shave your head smooth.”
At first, Hanna’s expression turned sad, but suddenly a cheerful look appeared on her face.
“I have to try this at least once, and at least I won’t be hot. Let’s do it!” she said confidently.
Regi removed the clip from Hanna’s hair, letting her long black locks fall down her back. She picked up a comb to carefully brush out Hanna’s hair and tied it into three ponytails with elastic bands—one on each side and one at the nape of her neck. Then she took a large pair of scissors and cut off the ponytails one by one, placing them on the table. Hanna’s hair was now much shorter, just above her chin.
Next, Regi picked up the clippers, removed the guard, and adjusted it to zero millimeters. She turned it on and ran it along the sides of Hanna’s head, continuing systematically over her scalp. Each stroke sent black strands falling onto Hanna’s shoulders and the floor. Ten minutes later, Regi turned off the clippers, leaving Hanna’s head completely shaved.
Regi dusted off the loose hair from Hanna’s shoulders with a brush, removed the cape, and covered Hanna’s shoulders with a towel. She retrieved a hot towel from the steamer and wrapped it around Hanna’s head. After five minutes, she removed the towel, wet a brush, and opened a tin of shaving soap. She lathered the soap into foam in a bowl and applied it to Hanna’s head with the brush.
From a wooden box containing 20 intricately designed razors, Regi selected one and began carefully shaving Hanna’s scalp. She started at the back and top with a larger razor, then switched to a smaller one for the sides. Once she finished, she wiped Hanna’s head with another towel and applied aftershave, massaging it in. Hanna winced slightly at the sting but was impressed with the final result.
Regi dusted Hanna’s head with talcum powder and gently brushed it in. Afterward, she removed the towel, and Hanna ran her hand over her smooth, bald head. She thanked Regi and left the room. Meanwhile, Regi swept up the black hair that had fallen to the floor.
After the photoshoot, Hanna decided to grow her hair out. With her friend’s help, she trimmed it to 1 millimeter around the sides every two weeks while letting the top grow out until it reached 10 centimeters in length. She styled it slicked back and kept that look for a long time.
