Part I: The Pact

The Dream Stage Café smelled of roasted espresso and sweet, warm pastries, providing a comforting backdrop to what felt like the most terrifying moment of Mina’s life. Fidgeting with the hem of her pink “Dream Stage” graphic tee, she twirled a long, heavy section of her brown hair around her finger.
“Can I tell you something incredibly embarrassing?” Mina asked, her face flushing.
Across the small table, Sophia took a slow sip of her iced coffee. With her striking, hip-length purple ombré hair, flawless makeup, and an effortlessly chic black top, Sophia commanded attention wherever she sat. “Those are usually my favorite things,” she replied smoothly.
“I like Mark. Like… actually like him,” Mina confessed, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sophia kept her expression carefully neutral, though internally, she was entirely dismissive. She looked at her sweet, overweight friend and thought, Mark isn’t going to fall for her. Sophia harbored her own secret desires for Mark, and she certainly didn’t view Mina as competition. Instead of encouraging her to confess immediately, Sophia expertly deflected, suggesting Mina wait until Mark returned from his upcoming year-long trip.
At the airport terminal, standing beneath the glowing sign for Gates A1-A12, the trio made a pact.
“One year,” Sophia declared, flashing a confident smile. “Then I expect both of you to buy me dinner”. When Mark finally walked through the departure gates, Mina made a silent, iron-clad promise to herself: she was going to use this year to change everything.

Part II: The Metamorphosis

The next twelve months were a grueling, triumphant grind. The group stayed connected through video calls, which slowly documented Mina’s intense physical transformation.
One evening, a sweaty Mina logged on, her hair tied up in a messy bun. “I walked eleven kilometers today,” she announced.
“Voluntarily?” Sophia asked from her pristine room, currently surviving a high-stress fashion marketing internship. Sophia assumed Mina’s crush would naturally fade, confident that when Mark returned, she would be the one waiting for him. But Mina was relentless. She took a job as a “temporary café goblin,” staying active and shedding weight at an astonishing pace, all while talking to Mark constantly.
The reality of Mina’s dedication didn’t truly hit Sophia until the day before Mark’s return. Sophia waited in the lobby of the Dream Stage Hotel, fully prepared to help her friend pick out a nice, modest outfit for the inevitable rejection.
But when Mina walked into the lobby, Sophia’s jaw practically hit the polished marble floor. Mina was unrecognizable. Her body was toned, her waist cinched into a pair of perfectly fitted jeans, and her long hair flowed behind her like a cape. She radiated a stunning, vibrant energy.
“Okay, be honest. Do I look weird?” Mina asked, striking a playful pose.
Sophia swallowed hard, panic suddenly gripping her chest. “You look… really good,” she managed to say, while her internal monologue screamed, Too good.
As they dragged themselves through the Style District, Mina’s boundless energy left Sophia exhausted, her feet aching from the miles they covered. When Mina emerged from a fitting room in a breathtaking crimson dress—the absolute perfect outfit for a romantic confession—Sophia realized she was about to lose Mark forever. She needed a plan.

Part III: The Sabotage

Walking past a salon window, Sophia spotted her salvation: a bright pink poster reading “DONATE YOUR HAIR,” requiring a minimum donation of twelve inches.
“Hey, Mina,” Sophia purred, pointing at the sign. “Didn’t Mark spend half this year doing charity work? Imagine telling him you spent part of yours doing this”.
Before Mina could fully process the manipulation, they were inside. The stylist, a sharp-eyed woman with short black hair, ran a measuring tape down Mina’s back. “Twelve inches is our minimum,” she explained. “Probably somewhere around a short bob, depending on how we section it”.
Sophia pushed harder. “Twelve is generous. But fifteen? That’s something you’d actually remember doing”.
Mina, terrified but desperate to impress Mark, agreed to the fifteen inches. The stylist tightly secured Mina’s massive mane into six distinct pigtails. Mina stared at the mirror, her eyes wide with mounting panic as the scissors came up.
KRRCH. SNIP. SNIP.
The heavy steel sheared through the thick bands of hair. SNAP! The first massive ponytail fell away, leaving a blunt, ragged stump behind.
“Wait, wait, wait…” Mina gasped, but the stylist was already moving to the next section. One by one, the heavy tails of hair were severed, laid out on the metal counter like fallen trophies.
“I look like I lost a fight with a lawnmower,” Mina cried, staring at her choppy, ruined length.
The stylist offered a layered ‘bixie’ to save some length, but Sophia ruthlessly intervened. “Pixie!” she chimed in brightly.
The clippers buzzed to life with a heavy BZZZZZZZ. The stylist drove the metal guards up the nape of Mina’s neck and over her ears, exposing skin that hadn’t seen the air in years. “I can see my EAR!” Mina shrieked, feeling completely naked as the dark hair rained down over her pink cape. By the time the stylist was finished, Mina sported a heavily textured, aggressively short pixie fade.
Sophia smiled, masking her triumph. There was no way Mark was going to fall for the girl with the boyish buzz cut.

Part IV: Reversal of Fortune

At Luna & Co. Kitchen that night, Mark looked handsome in a crisp blue overshirt. Mina sat across from him in her gorgeous red dress, but her head was completely swallowed by a plush, ridiculous winter monkey hat.
“Okay, serious question,” Mark laughed. “Why are you wearing a winter hat indoors?”.
Mina took a deep breath, reached up, and pulled the hat away. “I donated my hair yesterday,” she admitted softly, revealing the tight, edgy fade.
Mark was stunned. He stared at her, not with disgust, but with absolute awe. “Mina… That’s incredible. You donated fifteen inches? That was really brave”.
Blushing, Mina admitted she wouldn’t have done it without Sophia’s encouragement. Mark turned his charming, intense gaze toward Sophia. “Really? It was your idea? Then why didn’t you donate too?”.
Caught in her own trap, Sophia stammered, “I was going to. Tomorrow”.
“Perfect,” Mark smiled. “We’ll all go together”.

Part V: Just Deserts

The very next day, Sophia found herself trapped in the leather chair of the Lumière Salon, a blonde stylist standing behind her. Sophia’s gorgeous, vibrant purple hair was sectioned into four heavy pigtails. She was sweating, completely terrified, but unable to back down in front of Mark.
“Don’t chicken out by three inches,” Mina teased from the sidelines, using Sophia’s exact words against her.
The stylist’s scissors clamped down. SNIP… SNIP… The first massive purple tail fell away. Sophia let out a strangled gasp. The stylist worked quickly, and soon the counter was lined with the long, vibrant remnants of Sophia’s pride.
As the stylist began buzzing the sides of Sophia’s head to match Mina’s short look, Sophia watched the mirror in horror. “Wait, THAT short?” she panicked, hating the choppy, punk-like style taking shape.
But the real horror was happening in the background of the mirror. On the salon couch, Mark leaned in, looking deeply into Mina’s eyes. “There’s something I meant to tell you before you left,” Mina whispered. “I like you”.
“I had a feeling,” Mark replied softly. “I like you too”.
Mark leaned in and kissed her.
Seeing her entire plan go up in flames, Sophia lost her mind. “STOP!” she shrieked, violently jerking her head in the chair.
BZZZT!
The sudden movement caused the stylist to slip. The clippers dug brutally deep, carving a massive, bald runway straight through the remaining purple hair on the side of Sophia’s head.
The salon went dead silent.
“I can stop,” the horrified stylist offered. “But you’re leaving either half-shaved… or I even it out”.
Defeated, humiliated, and utterly broken, Sophia closed her eyes. “…Do it,” she whispered.
The clippers roared back to life. BZZZT… BZZZT… Sophia could feel the cold metal dragging across her scalp, taking every last millimeter of hair with it. “There’s nothing left,” she whimpered, rubbing her bare head.
Later that night, the streetlights reflected off Sophia’s completely bald, smooth scalp. She walked a few paces behind Mark and Mina, who were holding hands, lost in their own happy world. Sophia continually rubbed her bare head, a constant, chilling reminder that her manipulative plan had resulted in her getting exactly what she deserved.
