Aurora didn’t know why her parents were sending her to this summer school of sorts, she had good grades and was a good girl.But she didn’t complain and willingly got on the bus that was dispatched to pick her up.She wasn’t the only one going to the place, the bus was packed with girls.
The girl made friends with two other girls just across from her in seats, Lea and Cameron, they chatted all the way to their destination.They were in the same boat as Aurora, oblivious to why their parents wanted them to go to this school for the summer.
After about an hour of chitchat, Lea spotted a sign just outside her window,”Look”,she pointed to it.It read: Welcome to Lincoln.When they passed the sign, the girls began talking again about why they were brought to a small town.They couldn’t reach a decision when the bus rattled to a halt.Where they stopped was even more puzzling: a barbershop.
Two women exited the shop and boarded the bus, one with a clipboard and pen.They took roll and when everyone was accounted for, they introduced themselves.
”I’m Miss Levy”,a slim woman in a neat suit and skirt spoke gently,”This here is Miss Gordon”
Miss Gordon waved to the kids as her partner continued,”This is voluntary program for girls to learn skills and trades.Your parents have signed for this so when we say your name, you will get off the bus and go into the shop.Leave your stuff for we will be boarding the bus again when we’re done here”
Miss Gordon stepped forward at Miss Levy’s beckon, she consulted her clipboard and said,”Lucy, Faith, Hope”
The more she talked, the more heads disembarked the bus and headed inside.Aurora and her new friends were among the toppers of the list and they held hands as they went into the shop.It seemed huge inside and the chairs were filling up with girls.
Aurora’s trio had to wait for some of the seats to empty, they sat in the waiting room and peeped the process of the hairdressers.
Aurora followed a black braided girl be greeted by her stylist and seated.She sat daintily in the styling chair as the woman that was assigned to her wrapped a black cape about her, pumping the chair up as she did so.Once all prepped, the barber lady wasted no time.Taking some scissors from her belt, the girl’s black braid was taken and snipped off.The lifeless thing was put on the counter ahead of the chair, the girl didn’t seem to mind losing her braid.Her barber began to separate her sides from her crown.With them separated, she took the red clippers off their hook and turned them on, tilting the girl’s head down to her chest with her free hand.The clippers turned her sides to very short stubble.Turning off the clippers and freeing the remaining hair, the barber bobbed the girl’s hair and gave her a straight fringe.The girl loved her new haircut and left the chair with a smile.
Aurora then heard her name, a chair had opened.She nervously came to it, a woman was there to smile in her face.The barber lady was very peculiar, she basically had her sides shaved smooth and her top was flat a blonde; the light made it look like she had no hair.
”I’m Missy”,she shook the little girl’s hand, inviting her to sit in her chair,”Nice to meet you ,Aurora”
The girl was hypnotized by her hairdresser’s beauty that she took the chair with no fuss.In it, the woman rounded her with a cape and secured it snuggly.Pumping it up, she asked,”So, what’re we doing today?”
Aurora was puzzled,”I can choose my hairstyle”
”Sure”,her stylist answered,”This isn’t a boot camp or private school.The only requirement is that we have to cut it above the shoulders”
”I guess”,Aurora started,”Can I have your hair?”
”Okay”,Missy shrugged, going to work instantly.As the mass of Aurora’s thick hair came falling down, she just kept looking at the craft of the hairdresser.The guardless clippers on her sides felt good and she loved the skin look they unveiled.With such short hair, she could finally feel the breeze.Looking at her friends getting bobbed, Aurora felt special as Missy gave the girl a flat top haircut.To make sure it was level, Missy lightly pressed on the style to Aurora’s amazement.Tidying up the style with the clippers, Missy finished up the haircut as her customer couldn’t stop smiling at herself in the mirror.
”Here we go”,Missy released the girl and gave her a dusting with a soft brush,”We’re all done”
”Thank you”,Aurora smiled as she dismounted.
When all the girls were finished in the barber chair, they were told to line up.Lea and Kim, in their bobs, were shocked to have a friend with a flattop but they complimented her on it as she did to them.All the barber ladies came out the shop and the girls thanked them for the service.Back on the bus, the girls fondled over their new dos but Aurora couldn’t stop fantasizing about the shop and the woman who cut her hair.
The girls came to their lodgings, log cabins with adequate bedding and dining area.Aurora was a smart girl but she had forgotten her pajamas.She had to make do with the nightgowns the camp provided.Before bed, as she bushing her teeth, she looked at her in the mirror.The memories of earlier that day came flooding back and she wanted to go to the barbershop again.
One week, the camp had a career day.The girls could choose anywhere in the town nearby where they wanted to work.Like a lightning bolt, Aurora raised her hand and requested she work at the barbershop. Surprised at her enthusiasm, Miss Levy and Gordon decided to humour her and the former of the two ladies signed her up for it.
Missy was there when Aurora came into the shop, standing proudly.She taught the girl many things for the time they had.As a parting gift, Missy offered to do her hair.Not wasting a moment to think about it,Aurora hopped into the chair as her friend secured a cape round her neck.What Aurora asked her stylist next didn’t seem to surprise her.Taking her order, the clippers were once more to complete a smooth shave on the girl.
