Tangled Troubles: Geetha and Radha’s Struggle with Long Hair

Lakshmi sat behind her two daughters, Geetha and Radha, running a comb through their long, luscious hair. With summer on the horizon, she knew that managing their hair was going to be a hassle. As much as she wanted her daughters to grow their hair out, she also knew that they wouldn’t be able to manage it on their own. Lakshmi looked at both of them and said, “Girls, with summer coming up, I think we need to discuss your hair. Do you think you can maintain it yourselves, or should we take a trip to the salon and get you both a nice haircut for ease of management?”

Geetha and Radha looked at each other, silently agreeing that they had been hoping to grow their hair out even longer. But they also knew that they wouldn’t be able to manage it without their mother’s help. So, they started discussing how they could manage their hair by themselves and avoid getting a haircut.

Lakshmi: “Girls, with summer coming up, we need to talk about your hair. It’s getting too long, and it will be difficult to manage. I was thinking of taking you both to the salon for a haircut. What do you think?”

Geetha: (sighs) “I don’t want to cut my hair, Amma. I’ve been growing it out for so long.”

Radha: (nodding in agreement) “Me too, Amma. I want to keep my hair long.”

Lakshmi: “I know you both want to keep your hair long, but it will get tangled up and difficult to handle during the summer months. Can’t we just trim it a little bit?”

Geetha: “I know, but I don’t want to cut it short. Can’t we just trim it a little bit?”

Radha: “Yeah, just a little bit. That way, we can still keep our long hair.”

Lakshmi: (thinking for a moment) “Alright, we’ll go to the salon, and I’ll have them trim your hair a little bit. But, you both have to promise me that you will take care of your hair by yourselves during the summer months.”

Geetha: “Don’t worry, Amma. I know how to take care of my hair. I’ll make sure to brush it every day and use a conditioner to keep it soft.”

Radha: “And I’ll braid my hair before going out in the sun. That way, it won’t get too tangled.”

Lakshmi: “That’s good to hear. Remember, you have to take care of your hair if you want to keep it long and healthy.”

Geetha and Radha: “We will, Amma. Thank you.”

Lakshmi: “Alright, let’s go to the salon then. We’ll just trim your hair a little bit, and then you can show me how well you can take care of it.”

Lakshmi took Geetha and Radha to the salon for their haircut. The hairdresser greeted them and asked what they wanted. Lakshmi mentioned that these two girls need just a trim. Nothing too drastic. The hairdresser smiled and led them to their chairs. She combed their hair, sectioned it, and began to snip away the split ends. Geetha and Radha watched the hairdresser’s every move, making sure she didn’t cut off too much. After a few minutes, the hairdresser finished and turned them to face the mirror. “There you go, ladies. What do you think?” Geetha and Radha examined their hair, noticing that it looked much healthier and neter. They were happy that they didn’t have to cut their hair too short.

Lakshmi mentioned, “It looks great, thank you!” with a smile. As they left the salon, Lakshmi reminded Geetha and Radha to take care of their hair during the summer months. “We will, Amma,” they both promised, walking out of the salon with their freshly trimmed hair.

A few days after the haircut, Lakshmi fell ill and had to move to her mother’s place to recover. Geetha and Radha had to stay back as they had to attend school, and their father, Ramana, was there to take care of them.

The morning after their mother left, the girls woke up and realized they needed to get ready for school. Everything was set, except for their hair. They tried to help each other, but their efforts were in vain. Ramana was getting frustrated as he was also getting late for work. A heated conversation ensued between the girls and their father, with Ramana expressing his frustration that they should have listened to their mother and gotten their hair cut short.

Geetha: (frustrated) “I can’t do this. I can’t even reach the back of my head to tie my hair properly.”

Radha: (also frustrated) “And my hair is so tangled, I can’t even brush it properly.”

Ramana: “What’s taking you girls so long? We’re going to be late for school.”

Geetha: (sighing) “It’s our hair, Appa. We can’t manage it by ourselves.”

Radha: “Amma always helped us with our hair.”

Ramana: “I don’t understand why you girls didn’t listen to your mother and get your hair cut short. It would have been so much easier to manage.”

Geetha: (defensively) “We wanted to keep our long hair, Appa. We didn’t think it would be this difficult.”

Radha: “And it’s not like we can just cut it off now.”

Ramana: “Alright, let me see if I can help you.” (tries to tie Geetha’s hair, but struggles) “This is harder than I thought.”

Geetha: (giggling) “It’s okay, Appa. We’ll figure something out.”

Radha: (smiling) “Yeah, we always do.”

Ramana: “Alright, let’s try braiding your hair instead. That might be easier.”

Geetha and Radha: “Okay.”

Ramana: (starts braiding Radha’s hair) “See, this is not so hard. You just have to be patient and take your time.”

Geetha: (also starts braiding her own hair) “I think I got it, Appa.”

Ramana: “That’s my girls. You can do anything if you put your mind to it.”

Geetha and Radha: (smiling) “Thanks, Appa. We’ll remember that.”

Ramana: (smiling back) “Alright, now let’s get going. We still have to drop you off at school and then I have to get to work.”

Geetha and Radha: (nodding in agreement) “Okay, let’s go.”

When Geetha and Radha arrived at school, their teachers noticed that their hair was not properly braided. They advised them that twin braids were more suitable for long hair. The teachers also suggested that the girls should learn to manage their hair better or cut it short if it was difficult to manage. Geetha and Radha were unsure what to do and simply nodded before attending their classes for the day.

After school, they returned home feeling frustrated and unsure how to manage their long hair. They discussed this with their mom, and she wasn’t sure how to help. She connected with them on video call, explaining to them how to braid and asked them to try again. They tried very hard for both days but weren’t able to perfect it. Next week at school, the headmistress pulled them out of line at the assembly to talk to them about their hair.

Mrs. Kumar (Headmistress): “Geetha and Radha, we need to talk to you about your hair.”

Geetha: “Yes, ma’am?”

Mrs. Kumar: “Your braids aren’t coming out well, and it’s causing a disruption in the classroom. We’ve had complaints from other students, and we can’t have that kind of indiscipline in school.”

Radha: “I’m sorry, ma’am.”

Mrs. Kumar: “We’re giving you a last warning. If you can’t manage your hair properly, we’ll have to ask you to cut it short. That’s the school rule, and we can’t make exceptions for anyone.”

Geetha: “Yes, ma’am. We understand.”

Radha: (whispers to Geetha) “I don’t want to cut my hair short.”

Geetha: (whispers back) “I know, Radha. We’ll figure something out.”

Mrs. Kumar: “Good. You may go now.” Geetha and Radha nod and walk away from the teachers, feeling embarrassed and ashamed.

Radha: “I can’t believe this is happening.”

Geetha: “We’ll find a solution, Radha. We can’t let our hair affect our studies.”

Radha: “But how?”

Geetha: “Let’s try different braids and hairstyles. Maybe we can find something that works.”

Radha: “Okay, let’s do it.” Together, the sisters walk to their classroom, determined to find a way to manage their hair better.

After school, Geetha and Radha are on the way back home, talking and evaluating their options on what to do further. They neither want to compromise on their education nor want to let go of their hair. Geetha thinks she can still manage it till their mother comes back, while Radha doesn’t want to get a bad name for herself or her parents due to her hair and indiscipline it is causing in school. She thinks in the direction of cutting her hair short.
