Summer headshave

The Summer Shave

The blistering heat of summer in India had become unbearable. The temperatures in the small town of Rishikesh were soaring, and for Priya, the 11-year-old girl with thick, long hair, it felt like the heat was constantly suffocating her. Her mother, Anjali, had noticed how much discomfort Priya was experiencing with her long hair, especially under the hot sun. It was becoming more and more of a struggle for Priya to enjoy the summer. Sweating constantly and constantly needing to tie her hair up, she was growing frustrated with the thick, heavy mass of hair that always felt too hot.

One evening, as the sun dipped low, Anjali put down the cup of chai she was sipping and looked over at her daughter. “Priya, have you thought about getting a shorter haircut? Something cooler for this heat?”

Priya’s eyes lit up immediately. She had always wanted a new look, and the idea of something more freeing sounded perfect. “Yes, Mom! Something short! Maybe a buzz cut?” she asked eagerly.

Anjali, always the more cautious one, thought for a moment. Her own thick, black hair had always been something she treasured, and the thought of cutting it all off was intimidating. However, she could see how much Priya needed a change. “You know what? Maybe we both should. It’s so hot, and a fresh start would feel great,” Anjali said, surprising herself with the words.

Priya smiled wide. “Really, Mom? Both of us?”

“Yes, let’s do it,” Anjali agreed, excited by the idea of a bold change. “Let’s go to the barbershop tomorrow.”

The next morning, the air was thick with heat as Anjali and Priya made their way to the small barbershop in the heart of the town. The barbershop, with its weathered wooden sign hanging above the door, was busy as usual. The familiar hum of clippers filled the air, and the sound of men’s voices chatting filled the shop as it bustled with activity. Despite the number of customers, there was a tangible buzz in the air, as everyone seemed to be in high spirits due to the heat.

Inside, a few elderly men were sitting in chairs getting their hair trimmed, and a couple of young men were having their beards shaped. It was packed, and the small room was filled with the smell of hair oil and sweat from the summer heat. Anjali hesitated for a moment, feeling a little out of place, but Priya was full of excitement, dragging her mother by the hand.

“Excuse me!” Priya called out to the barber, a man in his 40s with a thick mustache and a sharp gaze. He turned to look at them, wiping his hands on his apron.

“What can I do for you, beta?” he asked with a smile, his voice carrying a warmth that immediately put Priya at ease.

“We both want head shaves,” Anjali said, trying to sound confident. Priya, standing next to her, gave her mother an encouraging smile.

The barber raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Head shave? Are you sure, madam?” he asked, his eyes scanning the long hair that Anjali and Priya both sported.

“Yes, definitely. The heat is unbearable, and I think it’s time for a big change,” Anjali said, her voice steadier than she felt.

The barber nodded. “Alright. We’ll start with your daughter.”

Priya climbed into the barber’s chair with excitement. She looked at her mother one last time before the clippers came out. Anjali was nervous, but seeing her daughter’s bright smile helped her feel more at ease. The barber wrapped a towel around Priya’s shoulders, securing it tightly.

The buzz of the clippers filled the room, and before Priya could even react, the barber’s clippers began to work through her thick black hair. She couldn’t help but gasp as the first few locks fell to the floor with a soft thud. The coolness of the clippers against her scalp felt refreshing, and the weight of her hair began to lift.

As the barber continued, more and more of Priya’s long hair fell away, leaving her head smooth and shiny. The noise of the clippers was joined by the chatter of the other customers, who glanced over with curiosity at the bold decision being made in the corner.

Soon, Priya’s hair was gone completely. She sat there in the chair, feeling the cool breeze on her bare scalp for the first time in years. Her wide grin showed her excitement as she ran her hands over her smooth head. “This is so cool!” she said with glee.

Anjali, watching her daughter, felt a wave of courage wash over her. Priya looked so confident and free, and Anjali realized she was ready to make the same leap.

“Alright, my turn,” Anjali said with a deep breath, making her way to the chair beside Priya. The barber gave her a warm smile and moved to work on her hair.

Anjali’s heart raced as the barber started, the buzz of the clippers growing louder in her ears. She could feel the cool metal against her scalp as the clippers trimmed away her long hair. The sensation was different from what she expected—cooler, lighter, but still a bit unsettling. As she looked over at Priya, who was still happily rubbing her smooth scalp, Anjali realized how liberating this would be.

The barber worked quickly, and before long, Anjali’s hair was gone. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, feeling both shocked and exhilarated. Her once long, dark hair was now nothing but stubble, and she couldn’t help but smile.

Priya jumped up from her seat and rushed to Anjali’s side, rubbing her bald head. “Look, Mom! We’re twins now!” she said, laughing with joy.

Anjali smiled back, her nerves completely forgotten. “We really are, aren’t we?”

As the two of them stepped out of the crowded barbershop, the summer heat no longer felt oppressive. Their heads were cool, free, and for the first time in a long while, they felt lighter—both physically and emotionally. They walked side by side, their smooth scalps glistening under the bright sunlight, sharing an unspoken bond, knowing that this moment, this change, was one they would never forget.
