Nancy Gene walks in the front door of the suburban house. She has on her backpack and carries her lunch pail in her right hand. The girl places her lunch pail and backpack on the floor and then she removes her school jacket, hanging it up neatly.

Nancy: I’m home, mom!

Nancy takes up her pail and backpack, walking into the living, as her mother calls back.

Mother: I’m so glad you’re home!

Nancy goes into the kitchen where her mother is cutting vegetables. She sets her lunch pail on the counter.

Mother: Did you have a good day at school?

Nancy: Today was sooo long and boring. Miss Hampton never couldn’t stop talking about hyperboles and Mr. Tanner made us run about four miles around the gym

Nancy cleans out her lunch pail.

Mother: I know it may seem long but you’re getting a good education

Nancy nods her head and shrugs as she lets down her brunette hair. She starts running her fingers through her hair as her looks her way.

Mother: Boy, your hair grows long

Nancy: I get it from dad’s side of the family

Mother: I know and it needs cut

Nancy is surprised by the statement. She starts to rebuttal.

Nancy: Mom, I like it this long. Bobby likes it long too and I don’t want it cut

Mother: Don’t argue with me, young lady. I don’t care if everyone and their mother likes it long. You’re getting it cut and that’s final.

Nancy: Alright, I call Sally’s and schedule…

Mother: Oh no no. We don’t have the money for the beauty salon. No, I’ll be cutting your hair after supper

Nancy: What?! No mom, I…

Mother: What did I say about arguing. Now, please, go do your homework and I’ll call you when supper’s ready.

Nancy: Ugh

Nancy exists the room in a huff (end of scene).

Transition to Nancy studying at her desk in her bedroom. Her mom calls her from downstairs.

Mother: Nancy! Dinner time!

Nancy: Coming!

Nancy pauses her studying to go downstairs to the dining room. She meets her mother at the dinner table. They both sit down and eat.

Mother: I don’t if you know this but I took a class on hairdressing in high school. I’m pretty good at it. Know how to wash, comb, and cut hair perfectly. Top of my class and…

Nancy: Mom, I really don’t care and would just like it to be over quickly

Mother: Oh, alright. I’m sorry for trying to put your nerves at ease but hm

The two continue to eat in silence (end of scene)

Transition to the two finishing up dishes. Mother smiles and dries of her hands with her apron. She pulls a stool into the middle of the floor and points to it.

Mother: Take a seat, please

Nancy hangs up her apron and reluctantly takes a seat on the stool while letting down her hair. She takes a breath as she watches her mother come into the kitchen with her tool and a cape.

Mother sets down the tools on the counter and then flings the cape around her daughter.

Nancy: How short are you going to cut my hair again?

Mother: You’ll see

Mother secures the cape around her daughter and goes to grab her tools. She picks up the scissors and comb and then takes her position behind the stool. The comb starts to comb through Nancy’s hair. Close up shot of Nancy’s eyes as she becomes increasingly nervous. Close up shot of the scissors readying to snap off a piece of hair. As the scissors snap shut, cut to Nancy as she closes her eyes tightly.

Sequence of mother going around the stool, cutting Nancy’s hair shorter and shorter. Cut back to Nancy’s eyes as they flutter as the mother’s shadows move across her face (End of scene).

Transition to mother dusting off her daughter’s neck with a rolled up towel.

Mother: There we are. See, that was quick. Nancy, you can open up your eyes

Nancy opens up her eyes slowly. She tries to fight the urge but she looks down and around at all the cut hair on the floor. Instinctively, as the cape is undone by her mother, Nancy feels up her head and is startled at the length.

Nancy: Ah mom, what did you do?

Mother: I gave you a quick haircut, like I said I would

As the cape comes off, Nancy rushes to the bathroom.

Mother: Hey, no running in the house

Nancy disregards the rule and rushes into the bathroom, quickly turning on the light. She stares at herself in the mirror. Her chocolate hair has been cut like a young boy’s. It’s round her head and her bangs sweep diagonally down her forehead.

Nancy: Oh no. I can’t go to school like this

Mother enters the room and puts her hands on her daughter’s shoulders, looking at them both in the mirror.

Mother: I don’t see why you can’t. You look spiffy and proper for your age. I would jealous of a girl who came to school with this haircut. You look absolutely stunning, darling. What did I tell you, eh

(End of scene)
