In a quiet village of Andhra Pradesh, Suryanarayana’s family held onto traditions with great devotion. The men of the house kept their heads completely shaved, while the women followed the custom of shaving their heads every week, leaving only a long tuft behind. His wife Gowri, elder daughter Swaroopa, and younger daughter Sevanthi had followed this ritual since childhood. Their family barber, Sai, had been handling this responsibility for years.

But every time he shaved Sevanthi’s head, his hands lingered just a little longer, his heart beating faster. Unbeknownst to the family, his admiration for Sevanthi had slowly turned into love. Suryanarayana, always occupied with work in another town, only returned home on weekends, leaving his family matters to Gowri. One warm morning, as the coconut trees swayed lazily in the backyard, the weekly ritual began. Sevanthi sat on the wooden stool, adjusting her long tuft as Sai prepared the razor.

The rhythmic sound of the razor gliding against her smooth scalp filled the air, and as her soft hair fell to the ground, Sai couldn’t hold back any longer. In a hushed voice, he whispered, “Sevanthi, I love you.” Her heart skipped a beat. She looked up at him through the mirror in front of her, searching for any hint of jest, but his eyes held only sincerity. She didn’t say anything, but the warmth in her cheeks betrayed her. A week passed, and as Sevanthi sat down again for her weekly shave, her heart felt lighter.

She had spent days thinking about Sai’s words, and today, as the razor moved over her head once more, she finally gathered the courage to respond. “I love you too,” she murmured. Sai’s hands paused for a fraction of a second before continuing, his fingers gently tracing her scalp before dusting off the last bits of hair. The air between them changed, a silent promise exchanged in that moment. Swaroopa, always observant, started noticing the subtle glances and the unspoken connection between them.

Sai’s touch lingered just a little longer on Sevanthi’s head, and she, in turn, seemed to glow whenever he was around. After her own head shave was completed one day, she suddenly turned to Sai and asked, “What’s going on between you and Sevanthi?” Her voice was calm, but her eyes were sharp. Sai hesitated, but before he could answer, Sevanthi’s flushed face gave it away. Swaroopa didn’t say anything further, but her suspicion had been confirmed. A few days later, Gowri overheard a hushed conversation between her daughters.

The realization that Sevanthi had fallen for the barber shook her to the core. She wasted no time in informing Suryanarayana. That week, Sai was not called for the ritual. Instead, a different barber was summoned, and Sevanthi sat there, feeling hollow as the blade moved over her head. Suryanarayana, upon hearing everything, was furious. “You will marry within our caste, and that is final,” he declared. Sevanthi sat quietly, but deep inside, she knew she wouldn’t let fate be decided for her.

With Swaroopa’s secret help, Sevanthi and Sai escaped under the cover of dawn. As they boarded a train bound for a new city, Sevanthi clung to Sai’s arm, feeling a mix of excitement and fear. But something felt incomplete. She turned to him and whispered, “I want to be yours, but I also want to keep my tradition alive.” Sai smiled, understanding her completely. He took out a razor he had carried with him. Under the dim light of the train compartment, he gently shaved her head, just as he had done countless times before, leaving behind the long tuft as always

. Sevanthi closed her eyes, feeling the familiar sensation, her heart swelling with love. Back in the village, Suryanarayana sat in the empty backyard, staring at the spot where Sevanthi once sat for her weekly shave. The pride he once held now felt like an unbearable weight. Gowri and Swaroopa remained silent, their hearts heavy with loss. He had upheld the traditions, but at what cost? The wind rustled the coconut trees, whispering the answer he was too late to understand.
