First Visit
Marina was 18 years old and had just received an envelope from her mother: “For your hairdresser,” it said in neat handwriting alongside a €20 bill. It was a family tradition she had followed without question, but lately, she felt curious to try something different.
One day, while walking through the neighborhood streets, she saw a faded sign that caught her attention: “Cuts starting at €5.” Intrigued, Marina entered the small barber shop run by Pakistanis. She had never been there before, but the price was tempting compared to what she usually paid at her regular salon.
When she opened the door, a bell rang softly. The place was simply decorated, with old mirrors covered in marks and a few metal chairs strategically placed in front of them. Behind the counter stood a middle-aged woman, wearing shorts and a tight T-shirt, who looked up and smiled.
“Welcome,” she said in fluent Spanish, though with a slight foreign accent. “What brings you here?”
Marina approached the counter hesitantly. She noticed a sign hanging on the wall behind the woman:
“Regular cut: €5. Special experience: €15.”
“I came because I saw the sign…” Marina replied, pointing toward the advertisement. “I wanted to know what this ‘special experience’ means.”
The woman raised an eyebrow, intrigued by Marina’s curiosity. After a brief pause, she responded with a mysterious smile:
“It’s something unique, young lady. Something you won’t forget. But first, you need to sign a consent form. Understand that this experience isn’t for everyone.”
Marina felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. The idea of trying something new tempted her. Without reading the form carefully (something she would later regret), she signed it, and the woman nodded approvingly.
“Follow me,” she said, leading Marina to a side door that led to an adjacent room.
As soon as Marina entered, the atmosphere changed dramatically. The lighting was dim, barely illuminated by small lamps placed strategically around the space. In the center of the room stood a tall metal chair, similar to those used by dentists. Beside it, another woman—also Pakistani—waited silently, dressed in shorts and a fitted T-shirt.
The first woman closed the door behind them and turned the key with a metallic click. Marina swallowed hard.
“Don’t worry,” the second woman said, breaking the silence. “This will be quick and memorable.”
With calm authority, she instructed Marina to undress. Marina hesitated for a moment, feeling a wave of uncertainty wash over her. Part of her wanted to rush to the door and flee, but another part—a mix of curiosity and stubbornness—kept her rooted to the spot. Slowly, she removed her clothes until she was completely naked, her skin prickling from the chill in the air.
She was then directed to sit in the metal chair. Once seated, her wrists were strapped to the arms of the chair with leather restraints, and her ankles were secured in the same manner. Now fully immobilized, Marina’s heart raced as panic began to creep in.
The cutting started abruptly. The scissors clicked sharply against her scalp, tearing out chunks of hair with each movement. There was no delicacy or care; every cut seemed rushed, as if they were determined to finish as quickly as possible. The sound of the scissors echoed through the room, making Marina flinch with every snip.
When they finished with the scissors, they brought out an electric razor. The constant buzzing filled the air as they moved closer to her. First, they worked on her head, removing any remaining hair. Then, with incredible precision, they shaved her eyebrows, leaving her face completely smooth.
Meanwhile, the second woman watched silently, her expression unreadable. Her presence added tension to the scene, making Marina wonder what was coming next.
Finally, when not a single strand of hair remained on her body, the first person picked up a large bucket of cold water. Without warning, they poured it over Marina, drenching her from head to toe. The impact of the freezing water was brutal, forcing an involuntary scream from her lips. For several seconds, all she could feel was the penetrating cold enveloping her.
Slowly, they untied her and offered her a clean bathrobe. As she wrapped herself in it, the two women exchanged knowing glances, as if they had just completed a successful mission.
“Thank you for choosing our special experience,” the first woman said with an amiable smile that contrasted sharply with what had just occurred. “We hope to see you again soon.”
Marina left the room in silence, still trembling slightly. Her reflection in the mirror startled her—her new appearance was radically different from what she knew. She felt strange, almost unrecognizable, but also experienced a strange sense of freedom.
Back home, her family couldn’t help but comment on her drastic change. At first, Marina tried to explain what had happened, but she quickly realized she didn’t have the words to describe it. Instead, she chose to remain silent and reflect on the experience.
Over the following days, Marina began to understand better what she had gone through. The “special experience” hadn’t been exactly what she expected, but it had taught her something valuable: sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected places. And although her appearance had changed dramatically, her perception of herself had evolved too.
From then on, Marina occasionally visited the barber shop, always with a mix of curiosity and respect. She knew they probably wouldn’t repeat the same experience, but she didn’t want to lose the connection to that peculiar place.
Second Visit
Weeks passed since that day at the barber shop. Although Marina initially felt uncomfortable with her new look, she gradually grew to accept and even enjoy it. Her shaved head gave her a more decisive air, as if she carried a silent declaration of independence. Besides, she discovered it was surprisingly easy to maintain—no complicated styles or hair products required.
A month later, her hair had started growing back slightly, forming a small unruly tuft that always seemed to fall out of place just when she least expected it. She decided it was time to return to the barber shop. This time, however, she wasn’t interested in any “special experience.” All she wanted was a clean and professional cut.
When she entered, she noticed the familiar yet mysterious atmosphere of the shop. The same woman who had attended her before greeted her with a friendly smile.
“Ah, it’s you again,” she said. “Are you here for something… special?”
Marina shook her head, now speaking with greater confidence.
“No, thank you. I just want a regular cut.”
The woman nodded understandingly, though her eyes sparkled mischievously, as if she still remembered that particular occasion. She guided Marina to a chair in front of the mirror and draped a pristine white cape over her shoulders.
“As you wish, my friend. But who knows? Maybe one day you’ll feel curious again…”
Marina didn’t respond; she simply smiled faintly while looking at her reflection in the mirror. The woman took out sharp scissors and began working with precise and efficient movements. This time, everything was different—there were no hurried cuts, no unnecessary roughness. Each stroke was measured and calculated, designed to shape her hair professionally.
“Did you know?” the woman asked as she worked, breaking the silence. “Many young people like you come here looking for something extraordinary. Some find it, others don’t. But everyone learns something important.”
Marina glanced at her through the mirror, intrigued.
“What do they learn?”
The woman paused momentarily, weighing her words carefully before answering.
“They learn that appearance doesn’t define who you are, but it can influence how you see yourself. And that, my friend, is powerful.”
Marina reflected on those words as she felt the scissors glide smoothly over her scalp. There was truth in them. After all, her style change hadn’t only altered her physical appearance—it had also shifted her self-perception. She felt more confident, more aware of herself.
The woman continued talking while cutting, sharing stories about previous clients and her own experiences in the trade. She spoke with passion, as if every haircut was a unique work of art. As the process went on, Marina noticed that the atmosphere no longer felt strange but instead became familiar and almost comforting.
When they finished with the scissors, the woman took out an electric razor, but this time there was no intention to shave her head entirely. Instead, she used the machine to define the edges of her hair and create a polished, modern finish. The vibrating sensation of the device against her skin was relaxing, almost therapeutic.
Finally, the woman stepped back to admire her work.
“Done!” she announced with satisfaction. “What do you think?”
Marina looked at herself in the mirror. Her new cut was simple yet effective—a fresh, youthful style that perfectly matched her personality. It wasn’t too daring, but it wasn’t overly conservative either. It was exactly what she had asked for.
“It’s great,” she replied sincerely, smiling for the first time since entering.
The woman returned her smile, placing a hand on her shoulder.
“We hope to see you soon, Marina. And who knows… maybe someday you’ll decide to try something new.”
Marina paid the €5 fee and exited the barber shop with a sense of calm and satisfaction. As she walked down the street, she thought about how much her perspective had changed since that first visit. She no longer saw the women barbers as intimidating figures; now she considered them masters of their craft, people who understood the power of transformation.
And although she knew she probably wouldn’t attempt the “special experience” again, she couldn’t deny that the first time had marked a turning point in her life. She had learned something valuable—that stepping outside your comfort zone, even for a few minutes, can open doors you never imagined.
Since then, Marina continued visiting the barber shop regularly, always opting for regular cuts and casual conversations with the women barbers. Over time, she even recommended them to some friends, who were impressed by both their skill and unique philosophy.
But every time she crossed that threshold, she always remembered that first experience, and a small part of her wondered what other “special experiences” might await within those walls.
