Maya and Anjali had been roommates for almost three years and best friends for nearly as long. They shared groceries, clothes, small arguments and most of their free time. Almost every evening after work they also walked together to their neighborhood gym, and it was there that they became friends with Rohan.
Their friendship with Rohan, however, didn’t remain inside the gym for long. What had begun with casual conversations between sets gradually became coffee after workouts, weekend breakfasts and occasional evening walks. If the three finished training together, somebody would usually suggest stopping at the small café nearby, where a ten-minute protein shake often became an hour of conversation. On weekends Rohan sometimes messaged their little group asking whether they wanted coffee or breakfast, and Maya and Anjali would tease him that he apparently couldn’t survive two days without his gym partners. He would reply that they were the ones benefiting from his excellent company.
They became comfortable enough to joke about one another’s habits. Rohan knew Maya would order coffee and then complain that it was too strong; he knew Anjali always claimed she wasn’t hungry before stealing something from someone else’s plate. The women knew he was irritatingly punctual and that he would start messaging if either of them was more than ten minutes late. Occasionally they went shopping together, tried a new café or simply sat talking after dinner when Rohan stopped by their apartment building to meet them. Nothing about it was formally romantic. They were simply three adults who had unexpectedly become good friends.
Rohan was also difficult not to notice physically. He was tall and well built, with broad shoulders, defined arms and the relaxed posture of someone who had trained consistently for years. His gym clothes were simple—usually a fitted dark T-shirt with shorts or track pants—but suited his athletic build. More distinctive was his head: Rohan kept it completely clean-shaven. It wasn’t a buzz cut; his scalp was deliberately maintained smooth, with only an occasional faint shadow when he went a couple of days without shaving. His fair complexion and naturally balanced head shape suited the look, while a neatly trimmed beard and moustache provided contrast. Everything about him looked clean, masculine and uncomplicated.
His bald head had even become part of their ordinary friendship. During an outdoor breakfast one Sunday, Maya had complained about the wind repeatedly blowing her hair across her face while Anjali struggled to keep her ponytail tidy. Rohan had simply sat there smiling until Maya accused him of looking far too pleased with himself. He rubbed his smooth scalp and replied, “You both made your lifestyle choices. Don’t blame me.” Anjali had laughed and told him that being bald wasn’t an achievement. Rohan disagreed. “This is aerodynamic efficiency.” The three had laughed about it, and after that his complete lack of hair became an easy subject for teasing.
Anjali, however, had begun noticing the look for reasons beyond humor. One evening at the gym, Maya caught her looking toward Rohan for the second time and teased, “Your neck seems to stretch only in Rohan’s direction.” Anjali laughed and eventually admitted, “Fine. I was thinking that bald look really suits him.” When Maya accused her of studying his head, Anjali explained that some men made you imagine them looking better with hair, whereas Rohan looked completely natural without it. “And the beard makes it better,” she added. “Smooth head, trimmed beard—it looks balanced.”
Maya laughed and called it a research project, although privately she agreed with every word. She too had noticed the smooth curve of Rohan’s scalp, his fair face, clean beard line and the way the bare-headed appearance complemented his broad shoulders. She had noticed those things not only under the gym lights but across café tables, during weekend walks and when the three sat talking together after workouts. She simply hadn’t admitted how closely she had been observing him.
Rohan caught them looking and walked over. When he asked what they were discussing, Maya mischievously told him that Anjali was admiring his hairstyle. Rohan placed a hand on his bare scalp and asked, “What hairstyle?” Maya asked whether his barber’s instructions were nothing on top, nothing on the sides and nothing at the back. Rohan rubbed his smooth head with exaggerated seriousness and replied that it was an extremely technical haircut, making Anjali laugh.
Now less embarrassed, Anjali asked whether he had shaved that morning. When Rohan confirmed it, Maya stared at her. “You can identify his shaving schedule now?” Anjali insisted it was obvious because there was almost no stubble. Rohan passed his palm over his scalp and laughed. “She’s right. I’ve apparently found my quality-control inspector.”
Anjali asked how often he shaved, and Rohan explained that every two days was normal, sometimes three if he became lazy. Maintaining it took only a few minutes. Pointing toward Anjali’s long ponytail, he told her, “You’re the one who chose the complicated lifestyle.” Anjali admitted she sometimes spent longer drying her hair than he spent shaving his entire head. Maya joked that Rohan had eliminated hair management from his life, while Anjali counted the advantages—no comb, no blow-drying, no sweaty hair during workouts and no bad-hair days. Rohan proudly announced that he was slowly defeating the hair-care industry.
When Anjali asked whether he genuinely preferred being bald, Rohan said he did. The clean-shaven head had become such a natural part of him that even if he suddenly had perfect thick hair, he suspected he would shave it off again. Anjali smiled and said she understood why, prompting Rohan to ask whether she was finally admitting that he looked good. Maya refused to let her escape, so Anjali eventually smiled and said, “Fine. You look handsome bald. Don’t make me repeat it.” Rohan rubbed his freshly shaved scalp with exaggerated satisfaction, while Anjali told him his confidence clearly didn’t need any more encouragement.
Rohan then asked Maya for her verdict. She admitted that, unfortunately, Anjali was right. When he objected to “unfortunately,” Maya teased that two women complimenting him would only make him admire himself more in the gym mirrors. Rohan insisted mirrors were for checking form. Maya replied, “Exercise form, not the form of your head.” Rohan grinned and said he checked both, making Anjali laugh and tell him, “Well, your head has excellent form.”
Maya laughed with them, but something about their easy exchange bothered her. Rohan’s attention kept returning naturally to Anjali. He looked directly at her when she spoke and seemed to enjoy making her laugh. Maya noticed because she liked him too. In fact, her attraction hadn’t appeared suddenly that evening. It had grown quietly through all those ordinary moments outside the gym—Rohan remembering her coffee order, walking the two women home after a late dinner, sending ridiculous messages to their group chat and listening seriously when Maya talked about a difficult day.
That was what made her feelings uncomfortable. Rohan wasn’t merely an attractive man she saw exercising. He had become her friend. Maya had grown accustomed to the three of them being a unit, and somewhere along the way she had privately begun wondering whether he might someday see her as something more.
Now she was beginning to suspect he might be wondering the same thing about Anjali.
Before returning to his workout, Rohan jokingly told Anjali that if she admired his hairstyle so much, perhaps she should try it herself. Anjali immediately grabbed her ponytail and laughed. “Absolutely not. Unlike you, I actually have hair.” Pretending to be offended, Rohan advertised the benefits of baldness—five-minute showers, no bad-hair days and no sweaty ponytail. Anjali insisted she wasn’t joining his imaginary bald club.
Maya unexpectedly said, “Actually, I think you’d look good.” Anjali told her not to start, but Rohan studied Anjali for a moment and agreed that Maya might have a point. Anjali covered her hair with both hands and declared the conversation finished, while Rohan reminded her that membership in the bald club remained open.
Later, the three stopped for coffee as usual. Nothing dramatic happened, which somehow made Maya notice things more. Rohan remembered that Anjali preferred less sugar and ordered accordingly. Anjali stole a bite from his snack without asking, and instead of protesting he simply moved the plate closer to her. When Maya teased them about behaving like an old married couple, both laughed, but Maya immediately regretted saying it.
Walking home afterward, Anjali admitted, “I think I actually like him.” She explained again that there was something soothing about Rohan’s whole appearance—the smooth head, trimmed beard, simple clothes and athletic build—but quickly added that she liked being around him too. “He’s easy to talk to. I don’t feel like I have to impress him.”
That part affected Maya more than the comments about his appearance. She forced a smile and joked that Anjali shouldn’t plan their wedding simply because Rohan had invited her into his bald club. Anjali laughed, but Maya knew why she’d said it. She wanted to make their growing closeness sound less significant.
That night Anjali stood before the mirror with her thick hair falling down her back. She gathered it tightly behind her head until almost none was visible from the front and jokingly asked, “Can you actually imagine me bald like Rohan?” Maya studied her reflection and admitted that, if her head shape was good, she might carry it surprisingly well. Anjali laughed, released her hair and said there was no chance she would ever find out.
Maya continued looking at her friend’s hair. Then an uncomfortable thought appeared: Would Rohan still find Anjali this attractive without it? She disliked herself for thinking it. Anjali was her best friend. Yet the question remained.
A few evenings later, Anjali smiled at her phone and announced that Rohan had messaged—not the group this time, but her directly—to ask whether they were joining him for breakfast after the next morning’s workout. Maya noticed Anjali’s private smile and felt the jealousy return.
Looking at her friend’s long hair, Maya casually said, “You know what? I still think you’d look surprisingly good bald.”
Anjali laughed. “Oh God, not this again.” Maya laughed too and insisted that she genuinely thought Anjali could carry the look. Anjali returned to Rohan’s message, treating the comment as harmless teasing between best friends.
Maya didn’t.
For Anjali, the bald-club conversation was playful flirtation inside a friendship that was slowly becoming something more. For Maya, it had become tangled with a deeper fear: that the comfortable friendship of three was quietly turning into a relationship of two, with Maya standing outside it.
And somewhere inside that jealousy, the image of Anjali without her beautiful long hair was no longer merely a joke.
The idea of shaving Anjali’s head refused to disappear, partly because Maya made sure it didn’t. Over the next few evenings she brought it up whenever an opportunity appeared, always lightly enough that it sounded like teasing rather than persuasion. She mentioned Rohan’s easy five-minute routine whenever Anjali complained about drying her hair, and sometimes, while they stood together before the mirror, Maya would pull Anjali’s hair away from her face and tell her that her features were strong enough to carry a completely bald head. One evening after dinner, Anjali was tying her recently shortened shoulder-length hair into a ponytail when Maya came behind her and gathered it even tighter. Looking at their reflections, Maya said, “See yourself properly. Your face actually looks good without hair around it. Imagine there wasn’t even this ponytail behind you.”
Anjali studied herself for a few seconds before laughing and accusing Maya of becoming more interested in shaving her head than she was. Maya immediately reminded her that she was the one who constantly noticed Rohan’s bald head. Anjali protested that she wasn’t obsessed, but Maya pointed out that she could practically identify his shaving schedule. That made Anjali laugh, and after a moment she admitted something Maya hadn’t known. “Okay, I’ve touched his head when it was freshly shaved. It was unbelievably soft—almost like a baby’s skin. I didn’t expect a shaved head to feel like that.” Maya raised an eyebrow and asked when this physical inspection had taken place. Anjali laughed harder and explained that Rohan had jokingly asked her to check whether he’d shaved properly. “Don’t make it sound romantic. I just touched it.”
Maya laughed with her, although internally the revelation irritated her. She hadn’t known Anjali had already touched Rohan’s scalp, and the image of that small, playful intimacy sharpened the jealousy she was trying to conceal. Instead of showing it, Maya cleverly turned Anjali’s curiosity against her hesitation. She pointed out that Anjali already admired Rohan’s smooth head, had touched it and had asked him about maintaining it. “You’re practically studying for the entrance examination to his bald club,” Maya joked. Anjali touched her ponytail and replied that being interested in Rohan’s bald head and actually shaving her own were two very different things. Maya shrugged casually. “Of course. I’m not forcing you. I’m only saying you’d probably look good, and if you don’t like it, hair grows back.”
That was how Maya preferred to handle it. She never directly told Anjali that she had to shave. Instead, she kept presenting the idea as something adventurous, practical and slightly funny, allowing Anjali’s own curiosity to do the rest. Eventually Anjali gathered her hair tightly away from her face and admitted, “I am curious, especially about how it would feel completely shaved.” Maya immediately told her she should try it once. Anjali smiled and said perhaps someday, but Maya glanced at the clock—it was nearly 9:30 p.m.—and replied, “Why someday? Let’s do it now, before you spend another three weeks thinking about it.”
Anjali spun around in disbelief before bursting into laughter. She pointed out that normal people didn’t decide to become bald at nine-thirty at night and that every salon would probably be closed. Instead of abandoning the idea, both women sat down with their phones and began searching. Almost every nearby salon showed closed, and Anjali triumphantly announced that fate had clearly voted in favour of her keeping her hair. Maya kept scrolling until she found a men’s barbershop roughly two kilometres away that was still listed as open. When Anjali stared at her and asked, “A men’s barbershop?” Maya picked up the bike keys and replied, “You’re asking for a head shave, not bridal styling.” Anjali touched her ponytail, visibly caught between excitement and nervousness, before finally laughing. “Fine. Let’s go before I become sensible.”
During the short ride, Anjali repeatedly touched her ponytail as though becoming aware that every movement of it might be one of the last. At a traffic signal she told Maya, “This could literally be the last ten minutes I have hair.” Maya told her to say goodbye properly, so Anjali solemnly thanked her hair for twenty-six years of service. Both laughed, and when Anjali said that tomorrow she would have Rohan’s hairstyle, Maya reminded her that Rohan technically didn’t have a hairstyle. “Exactly,” Anjali replied from behind her. “Tomorrow neither will I.”
The barbershop was small but clean and well maintained, and the barber was already preparing to close when the two women entered. He looked understandably surprised to see them so late and asked what they needed. Maya pointed toward Anjali and said she needed a haircut. When the barber asked what kind, Anjali hesitated for a second before Maya answered simply, “Full head shave.” The barber immediately looked at Anjali rather than relying on Maya’s answer and asked whether she really wanted everything removed. Anjali touched her ponytail, took a breath and nodded. “Yes. Full head.” Maya immediately produced her phone and announced that she was recording the transformation. As Anjali sat down she laughed nervously and told Maya that she seemed much too happy about this. Maya replied that after spending days listening to her talk about bald heads, she deserved documentary evidence.
Once the cape was secured around Anjali’s neck, the barber examined her shoulder-length hair and explained that because it was already tied, he would remove the ponytail first. That simple statement made Anjali unexpectedly quiet. She stared into the large mirror as he tightened the elastic, gathered the ponytail securely and positioned the scissors above it. Maya teasingly announced that this was her last chance, but after looking at herself for another moment Anjali smiled and said, “Cut it.” The scissors worked through the thick ponytail until it finally separated. The barber held it up, and Anjali stared before laughing in disbelief. “That’s my hair!” Maya moved the camera toward it and corrected her, “That was your hair.”
Without the ponytail, Anjali’s remaining hair fell freely around her head in an uneven chin-length shape. She shook it slightly and stared at the sudden change. The barber didn’t attempt to shape it because there was no reason to create another hairstyle. Instead, he picked up the clippers and explained that he would first take the whole head down very close before anything else was done. When the clippers started at one side and travelled upward, Anjali watched a wide path of hair disappear almost to the skin. Her eyes widened as she whispered, “Oh God, this is actually happening.” Maya laughed and told her that she was definitely committed now.
The barber secured the cape around Anjali and looked at the small ponytail formed from her shoulder-length hair. He tightened the elastic and said, “First I’ll cut this off, madam. After that I’ll use the machine.” Anjali looked at Maya through the mirror and suddenly became quieter. Maya raised her phone and grinned. “Last appearance of your ponytail.” Anjali reached behind and touched it once, feeling its familiar weight against her fingers. “Don’t make it dramatic. Just cut it before I start thinking too much.”
The scissors closed firmly through the ponytail. Anjali heard each heavy snip until the bundle finally separated. The barber held it beside her head, and her eyes widened. “Oh God, that’s actually my hair.” Maya zoomed in with her phone. “That was your hair.” Once the ponytail was gone, the remaining hair dropped freely around Anjali’s face in a rough chin-length shape. She shook it slightly and laughed. “For about thirty seconds I have another hairstyle.” The barber reached for the clippers, and Maya replied, “Enjoy it. This hairstyle has a very short life expectancy.”
The clippers started at Anjali’s right side. A wide section of chin-length hair folded before the machine and dropped onto the cape, exposing an extremely short dark covering beneath. Anjali’s eyebrows rose. “Wow. That’s really short.” Pass after pass followed, loose hair sliding over her shoulders and accumulating in her lap as the barber worked systematically around the side, carefully around the ear and toward the back.
When he lowered her chin, Anjali immediately asked, “Maya, how much is gone behind?” Maya replied mischievously, “Hardly anything.” Anjali stared suspiciously at her reflection. “You’re lying.” Maya laughed. “Fine. Most of the back is already zero.” Anjali tried instinctively to turn before the barber gently said, “Straight, madam. I’ll move your head.” She settled again, laughing. “Okay, but somebody has to tell me what’s happening.”
For a few minutes the transformation looked almost comical. One side of Anjali’s head was reduced nearly to the scalp while loose hair remained on the other. When she caught the contrast in the mirror she burst out laughing. “If you stop now, I’m never leaving this shop.” Maya raised the phone closer. “Perfect picture for Rohan.” Anjali immediately protested, “No! He sees only the final result.” Maya smiled knowingly. “Interesting.” Anjali rolled her eyes. “I just don’t want him seeing me looking like half a coconut.”
The barber eventually brought the clippers to the front and pushed them backward. Anjali watched the last substantial sections of hair fold ahead of the machine and tumble onto the cape. Her familiar appearance disappeared pass by pass until there was no fringe, no parting and nothing framing her face. The barber continued around the crown, sides and back until everything was uniformly reduced to zero.
When the machine finally stopped, Anjali stared at herself. She could see the complete shape of her head for the first time. She slipped one hand from beneath the cape and rubbed the top, then immediately moved her palm backward and frowned. “It’s rough.” The barber explained, “Machine zero, madam. Very close, but you can still feel the hair.” Anjali rubbed it once more and asked, “How do you make it completely smooth?” The barber replied, “Razor.”
Anjali looked at her reflection for a moment. The zero shave already made her look almost bald, but the sensation wasn’t what she had imagined. Her thoughts went immediately to Rohan. She remembered the first time she’d placed her palm on his freshly shaved head during one of their jokes at the gym. There had been almost nothing for her fingers to catch against—just warm, smooth skin and the unmistakable rounded shape of his scalp beneath her hand. So this is the stage before that, she thought. Looking at the barber, she smiled. “Then use the razor. I want the proper shave.”
The barber thoroughly wet the zero-length stubble and worked lather over the entire scalp. When Anjali saw her white-covered head in the mirror she laughed again, but her attention sharpened when the barber picked up the razor. “Keep still, madam,” he said. “I’ll move your head.”
The first stroke began near the front.
Anjali felt the blade touch her scalp and then the unmistakable gentle scraping sensation as it travelled through the tiny stubble. It didn’t feel like the vibrating clippers at all. The razor was quieter and much closer; she could actually feel the blade following the contour of her head and hear the faint sound of it clearing the microscopic growth.
When the barber lifted the razor, a narrow clean strip of bare scalp appeared through the lather.
Anjali stared at it. “Oh. That’s different.”
The barber continued steadily. Each stroke produced the same peculiar sensation—contact, a soft scrape, then suddenly cool bare skin where the razor had passed. Anjali found herself concentrating on the feeling. She could tell approximately where the blade was even when she couldn’t see it. As it moved over the top she imagined Rohan standing in front of his own mirror doing something similar every couple of mornings. So this is what his head feels while he’s shaving it, she thought. The idea made her smile.
The barber cleared the first pass across the top and crown, then carefully worked around the sides and ears. He repositioned Anjali’s head whenever necessary, stretching the skin lightly with one hand while controlling the razor with the other. When he lowered her chin and began shaving upward from the nape, Anjali could feel the blade following the rounded back of her head. The sensation was strangely precise: a faint scraping stroke followed immediately by coolness.
After the initial shave, the barber checked the scalp with his fingertips and began the closer finishing work. He reapplied lather and changed directions rather than simply repeating the same path. Some passes travelled against the direction of growth; others moved sideways across it. He shaved from the nape toward the crown, then changed position and worked from the crown downward again. Across the sides he made controlled strokes from near the ears upward toward the crown, then crossed those paths from another angle.
The crown required particular attention because the hair changed direction there. The barber worked around it with multiple short strokes, stretching the skin gently and approaching the same area from different angles. Anjali could feel the direction changing every time the razor touched her—sometimes travelling forward, sometimes backward, sometimes sideways across the curve of her skull.
Maya watched the increasingly clean scalp appearing beneath the lather. “He’s shaving you from every possible direction.”
Anjali smiled without moving. “Good. I don’t want to find one rough patch after we leave.”
The barber made another series of light passes from side to side across the top, then worked around each ear and down toward the nape. Anjali simply let him continue. She was enjoying the strange rhythm of the shave now—the quiet scrape of the razor, the barber repositioning her head and the immediate coolness of every newly cleared section.
And every so often her thoughts returned to Rohan. She pictured his smooth scalp and remembered the almost silky, leather-smooth sensation beneath her palm when she’d touched it. She wondered whether hers would feel the same when this was finished. More unexpectedly, she wondered what Rohan would think when he realized she now understood his shaving routine from experience rather than curiosity.
Maya, meanwhile, was having considerably less pleasant thoughts. Maya had secretly hoped that taking away Anjali’s hair might make her look plainer, perhaps even slightly awkward. Instead, the clean scalp seemed to emphasize her eyes and face. Maya continued recording with an encouraging smile while privately realizing that her clever little experiment was beginning to turn against her.
Once the barber was satisfied with the head, he wiped away the lather and opened the cape. Loose cut hair was shaken away, exposing Anjali’s shoulders and neck. Looking behind her, he said, “Madam, bend forward once”Anjali lowered her chin.
With the cape gone, the barber could shave deeper along the nape. He stretched the skin lightly and carefully cleared the fine growth below Anjali’s former hairline. Several neat strokes travelled upward toward the already bare scalp, leaving a clean transition from the back of her head into her neck.
When Anjali raised her head again, she looked closely at herself under the strong mirror lights. Her freshly shaved scalp appeared lighter and exceptionally clean compared with her face. She turned from one side to the other and said, “My head looks lighter than my face now.” The barber replied, “Scalp was covered, madam. Face gets sunlight. Fresh shave and this light also show the difference.”
Anjali leaned closer. Without hair framing her face, she suddenly noticed the fine facial hair much more clearly. She rubbed her face thoughtfully and looked from her reflection to the barber. “Can you shave my face too? I can see the fine hair much more now, especially with the head completely clean.” The barber nodded. “Full face?” Anjali answered simply, “Yes. Make the whole face neat so it goes with the head.”
Only then did the barber attach the padded headrest. Anjali leaned back and immediately laughed when her bare head settled against it. “I can actually feel the shape of my skull touching this.” Maya smiled. “No cushioning anymore.” The barber reclined the chair and asked whether he could use lather. Anjali nodded. “Yes, do it properly.”
He spread a light layer of lather over her face and began the shave. With one hand he gently stretched and positioned the skin while the razor in his other hand moved in short, careful strokes. Anjali remained still, watching whenever the mirror angle allowed it. The barber gently turned her face from one side to the other as he worked, occasionally pulling the skin taut with his fingers so the razor could travel cleanly.
When he reached the area around her mouth, his movements became particularly careful. He gently positioned the lip to tighten the skin and used small controlled strokes with the razor. Anjali’s eyes moved toward Maya as though warning her not to make a joke. Maya smiled anyway, but Anjali managed to remain still until the barber finished.
Once the facial shave was complete, Anjali raised her right arm to adjust herself and noticed her underarm in the mirror. She paused. “Since we’re doing everything tonight, can you shave this too?” Maya immediately laughed. “You’re personally extending his closing time.” Anjali looked toward the barber. “Both underarms, please.”
The barber worked slowly and deliberately. Anjali raised her right arm while he gently stretched the skin with one hand and shaved with the other, using careful short strokes rather than rushing across the area. When the right side was finished, Anjali lowered that arm and raised the left. He repeated the same controlled technique, keeping the skin taut as he removed the hair, then wiped both areas clean.
“Anything else?” Maya asked.
Anjali laughed. “I think that’s enough hair removal for one night.”
The barber returned to the head and face for his final inspection. He felt across Anjali’s scalp with his broad palm, found a couple of minute areas of resistance and made a few last light razor passes from opposing directions. He swept once more from the nape toward the crown, across the top, sideways over the crown and upward from the sides near the ears. Only when his palm moved over the entire head without encountering obvious roughness did he put the razor aside.
He sprayed cool water over Anjali’s scalp and face. Anjali closed her eyes as the droplets touched the freshly shaved skin directly. “That’s cold!” she laughed. The barber wiped the water away with clean tissue, passing it across the forehead, over the entire bald crown, around the sides and down the nape before gently cleaning her face.
Then he applied a small amount of cooling after-shave gel. He spread it lightly across the freshly shaved scalp and face, and Anjali immediately felt the cool sensation settle over the skin. “Oh, that’s nice,” she said, smiling. The barber finished by lightly wiping away any excess moisture with fresh tissue and gave the scalp one last broad check with his palm.
“Finished, madam.”
The chair came upright.
For several seconds Anjali simply stared at herself.
Under the bright barbershop lights, her completely bare head caught the light softly. Her scalp looked clean and even, her freshly groomed face appeared bright, and without hair surrounding it her smile seemed much more prominent. She looked different—dramatically so—but not uncomfortable or embarrassed. If anything, the expression on her face was becoming more delighted with every second.
Then she finally lifted both hands.
Her palms settled against the sides of her head and slowly travelled upward toward the crown. She moved one hand from her forehead across the entire top, down the back and then deliberately reversed direction.
Her eyes widened.
There was none of the sandpapery resistance she’d felt after the clippers. Her palm simply glided over the bare scalp. The closest comparison that came to her mind was polished, silky-soft leather—warm, supple skin with the firm rounded shape of her skull immediately underneath.
“Oh my God,” she whispered, smiling. “It’s unbelievably smooth.”
She rubbed from nape to crown, then crown to nape. She moved sideways across the top and around the sides, feeling the curves above and behind her ears. Each direction felt almost equally clean. For the first time in her life she wasn’t touching hair at all; she was feeling the actual shape and skin of her entire head.
Her thoughts returned immediately to Rohan.
So this is it, she thought. This is exactly what I felt when I touched his.
She smiled even wider and continued running her palm across the smooth crown.
Maya stepped closer and touched Anjali’s head herself. Her hand glided across the freshly shaved scalp with almost no resistance, and for a moment Maya didn’t say anything.
Anjali looked at her through the mirror. “Well?”
Maya reluctantly smiled. “Ridiculously smooth.”
Anjali laughed. “Tomorrow I’m definitely checking Rohan’s and comparing.”
That sentence brought Maya’s jealousy straight back.
She looked at Anjali sitting beneath the bright barber lights: completely bald, freshly groomed, her fair scalp glowing softly beneath the lights and a broad, radiant smile on her face as she continued touching her new smooth head. Maya had cunningly encouraged this entire experiment because some selfish part of her had hoped that removing Anjali’s beautiful hair might make Rohan notice her less.
Instead, the transformation had made Anjali look strikingly confident.
Maya gave the bare crown a playful tap and concealed the disappointment beneath a joke. “Wonderful. I’ve personally manufactured Rohan’s perfect bald-club partner.”
Anjali laughed, rubbing her smooth head again. “Wait until he sees me.”
Maya smiled at their reflections.
That was precisely what she was now worried about.
Maya came closer and placed her own palm against the top of Anjali’s freshly shaved head. She slowly moved it across the smooth crown and laughed in genuine surprise. “Wow. This really is ridiculously smooth.” Anjali grinned and told her that now she understood what she’d meant about Rohan’s freshly shaved head feeling so soft.
But while Maya’s hand rested briefly on Anjali’s scalp, another realization arrived—one she liked considerably less.
Anjali looked stunning.
Maya had secretly imagined that without her attractive hair, something would be missing. Instead, the shaved head exposed a naturally balanced, rounded shape that suited Anjali unexpectedly well. Her scalp was close to the same complexion as her face, so the transition from forehead to crown looked natural rather than stark. Without hair framing her features, her eyes appeared larger, her cheekbones clearer and her smile brighter. Maya’s little private plan had been based on the assumption that removing Anjali’s hair might remove part of what Rohan found attractive. Looking at her now, Maya realized she might have accomplished exactly the opposite.
Anjali, unaware of any of this, turned toward the barber and asked how she could keep her head feeling exactly like this. His answer was practical and uncomplicated. He explained that once she began feeling the hair return, she could wet her head properly, use enough soap or shaving cream to let the razor move comfortably, shave carefully and then check with her hand. If she wasn’t confident doing it herself, she could simply come back. Anjali jokingly asked whether there was no secret bald-person technique, and the barber smiled. “Hair grows, shave again.” Maya laughed and called it the most straightforward maintenance guide she’d ever heard.
The moment they stepped outside, the late-night breeze touched Anjali’s exposed scalp and she stopped walking. Laughing, she said she could feel the air over her entire head. Maya told her that she had successfully converted herself into a weather sensor, while Anjali kept rubbing the smooth scalp and saying how strange but pleasant it felt. During pauses on the ride home she continued touching it, fascinated that there was no ponytail, no loose strand and not even enough stubble to catch against her palm.
Maya became quieter during the ride. Her jealousy was no longer focused on Anjali’s hair because there was no hair left to envy. Instead, she found herself imagining Rohan’s reaction when he saw Anjali. She could already picture his surprise, the inevitable bald-club jokes and probably Anjali asking him to compare whose shave was smoother. The thought irritated Maya far more than she wanted to acknowledge.
Back at the apartment, Anjali went directly to the largest mirror. She turned her head left and right, checked the sides, used another mirror to see the back and repeatedly ran both hands over her scalp. “I genuinely love it,” she admitted. “I thought the moment I saw myself bald I’d panic and want my hair back. Instead I just keep touching my head.”
Maya walked behind her and lightly tapped the smooth crown with her fingertips. Anjali immediately looked at her through the mirror and protested, “Hey! Respect the bald head.” Maya tapped it once more and announced that she was performing a quality inspection. Anjali reminded her that quality control was her job with Rohan. Maya grinned and replied, “Not anymore. Now you’re the product being inspected.” Anjali burst out laughing and told her to stop.
Maya placed her palm against Anjali’s scalp again, feeling its smoothness while both watched themselves in the mirror. “You really went all the way,” she said. Anjali reminded her that Maya had practically run an advertising campaign for baldness all week. Maya laughed and replied, “And surprisingly, my customer actually bought the product.” Anjali rubbed her scalp proudly and said that tomorrow she was going to challenge Rohan to see whose head was smoother.
That innocent sentence sharpened Maya’s jealousy immediately. She imagined Rohan and Anjali standing together, both completely clean-shaven, laughing while comparing their heads. Yet Maya concealed the feeling beneath another joke. “Wonderful. Exactly what Rohan needed—a beautiful bald partner.” Anjali became shy and immediately repeated, “Partner?” Maya watched her expression through the mirror before cunningly correcting herself with deliberate innocence. “Bald-club partner. What did you think I meant?” Anjali laughed and pushed her away.
After another minute admiring herself, Anjali asked more quietly whether Maya genuinely thought Rohan would like the new look. Maya looked at her friend’s bare scalp, bright eyes and delighted expression and knew the answer she least wanted to give. “Yes,” she admitted. “I think he’s going to love it.” Anjali’s smile widened immediately.
Maya tapped the top of her head once more and joked, “Perfect. I may have personally created Rohan’s ideal bald girlfriend.” Anjali laughed and protested that they hadn’t even gone on a proper date. Maya replied, “Not yet,” deliberately watching the shy smile that appeared on Anjali’s face.
Anjali returned her attention to the mirror and slowly passed both hands over her smooth scalp again. “Imagine us tomorrow. He’ll have his bald head, I’ll have mine.” Maya finished the thought for her: “You’ll look like a matching pair.”
Anjali laughed at the idea.
Maya laughed too, but her smile concealed a much less innocent thought. She had spent days cleverly encouraging Anjali toward this chair because some jealous part of her had hoped that taking away the hair Rohan had admired might weaken his attraction.
Instead, she had helped reveal a look that suited Anjali beautifully.
Every strand was gone. Her scalp was perfectly smooth. Anjali loved it.
And Maya was beginning to suspect that Rohan would love it even more.
That night, Anjali discovered another unfamiliar part of having no hair at all. When she finally went to bed, she automatically reached behind her head as though she needed to move her hair away from her neck before lying down, only for her fingers to find nothing. She laughed quietly at herself and lowered her head onto the pillow. The sensation surprised her immediately. There was no ponytail trapped beneath her, no loose hair brushing her cheeks and nothing cushioning the back of her head. The pillowcase touched her freshly shaved scalp directly. She shifted from one side to the other, feeling the smooth curve of her head slide against the fabric, and then lazily passed a palm from her forehead over the crown. It was still wonderfully smooth. Smiling in the darkness, she remembered the faint scraping sensation of the barber’s razor and then thought of Rohan. Tomorrow he would see what she had done. That thought stayed pleasantly in her mind until she fell asleep.
The next morning, Anjali’s hand went instinctively to her head almost as soon as she woke. She remained on the pillow for a few moments, slowly rubbing the crown and back, fascinated that there was nothing between her palm and the actual shape of her head. The perfectly smooth finish from the previous night had developed only the faintest suggestion of texture in a few places, but she still felt completely bald. When she went for her shower, habit made her reach toward the shampoo before she stopped herself and laughed. “Oh. I don’t need you anymore.” She stepped beneath the water and immediately closed her eyes as it struck her bare scalp directly. There was no hair becoming heavy, nothing falling across her face and nothing to squeeze dry afterward. She simply rubbed both palms over her smooth head while the water ran across it, washed herself and stepped out within minutes.
Maya was still getting ready when Anjali emerged from the bathroom already drying her head with a single quick rub of the towel. She looked at the clock and asked suspiciously, “That’s it?” Anjali smiled and replied, “That’s it.” Maya stared at her and asked, “No shampoo, conditioner, drying, combing?” Anjali shook her bare head. “Nothing. Rohan was right. This is ridiculously easy.” Hearing Rohan’s name first thing in the morning irritated Maya slightly, but she concealed it and replied, “Wonderful. One night bald and you’re already advertising the lifestyle.”
For breakfast Anjali dressed in a fitted T-shirt and fitted casual pants. She stood in front of the mirror for a moment, admiring how different the same clothes looked with her completely bare head, then unexpectedly picked up a cap and pulled it down over her scalp. Maya asked, “Why are you covering it after spending the whole morning admiring it?” Anjali adjusted the brim and smiled mischievously. “I’m not covering it. I’m hiding it from one person.” Maya knew immediately. “Rohan.” Anjali grinned. “Obviously. I want to see his face when I remove it.” Maya smiled and said, “This should be interesting,” while privately holding onto one final hope. Perhaps seeing Anjali completely bald in real life would be different from joking about it. Perhaps Rohan would be surprised but wouldn’t actually find it attractive.
The three had arranged breakfast at one of their usual restaurants before going to the gym. Rohan was already sitting at the table when Maya and Anjali arrived, and almost immediately his attention went to Anjali’s cap. “Since when do you wear a cap to breakfast?” he asked. Anjali sat opposite him, trying unsuccessfully to suppress her smile, and replied, “Since today.” Rohan narrowed his eyes. “You’ve done something.” Maya sat down beside them and announced innocently, “I know absolutely nothing.” Anjali laughed. “You’re a terrible liar.” Rohan looked between the two women and asked, “Okay, what is going on?”
For the first time since leaving the barbershop, Anjali actually felt nervous. She touched the brim of the cap and asked, “Remember your bald club?” Rohan stared at her for a second, and then his eyes widened. “No.” Anjali started laughing. Rohan leaned forward. “Anjali, no way.” She slowly lifted the cap from her head and revealed the completely smooth scalp beneath it.
Rohan simply stared.
For two long seconds his expression was so shocked that Maya almost felt hopeful. Then his face broke into an enormous smile. “Anjali! You actually did it!” Anjali suddenly became shy and rubbed the side of her bare head. “Yes.” Rohan looked from the front and then slightly toward the side as though he needed to confirm that every bit of hair really was gone. “You shaved everything?” When she nodded, he asked, “Razor?” Anjali smiled proudly. “Proper razor shave.”
Rohan laughed in disbelief and continued looking at her. “You look awesome. Seriously, Anjali, you look beautiful bald.” The compliment immediately made her blush. She lowered her eyes and asked, “Really?” Rohan nodded without hesitation. “Absolutely. Your head shape suits it perfectly. You’ve got this really nice smooth curve from the forehead over the crown, and the sides look neat too. I told you that you might actually suit it.” Anjali’s smile grew wider with every sentence.
Across the table, Maya felt her stomach tighten. Her last small hope was disappearing remarkably quickly.
Rohan raised his hand toward Anjali’s scalp but stopped before touching her and asked, “Can I?” Anjali laughed. “After all the times I’ve inspected yours? Go ahead.” His palm settled gently against the top of her freshly shaved head and travelled slowly across the crown toward the back. His eyebrows immediately rose. “Wow. You went really close.” Anjali laughed and explained, “The barber used clippers first, but when I touched it, it felt rough. So I told him I wanted the razor.” Rohan passed his palm across the crown once more and said, “This is extremely smooth.” Anjali looked pleased. “Better than yours?” Rohan immediately replied, “Don’t become arrogant on your first day in the club.”
Anjali reached across the table and ran her palm over Rohan’s own shaved head. After moving against the grain, she laughed and said, “Yours is rougher. I win.” Rohan protested, “I shaved yesterday morning. I wasn’t informed there would be a scalp inspection at breakfast.” Maya forced herself to laugh with them and said, “Wonderful. Two babies comparing whose head is softer.” Rohan grinned. “Correction. Founding member and newest premium member.”
Still smiling, Rohan leaned closer and gave Anjali a quick affectionate kiss on the top of her freshly shaved head. Anjali froze for a fraction of a second before her cheeks coloured noticeably. She touched the place he had kissed and laughed softly. “Was that the official initiation?” Rohan smiled. “Yes. You’re officially in the bald club.” Maya looked down at the menu for a moment longer than necessary. She had imagined many possible reactions from Rohan, but a delighted compliment followed by a kiss on Anjali’s bald head had definitely not been one of them.
Once breakfast arrived, Anjali told Rohan the entire story of the previous night. She explained how Maya had spent several evenings encouraging her, how “someday” had suddenly become nine-thirty that night, how they had searched for somewhere still open and finally found a men’s barbershop two kilometres away. Rohan laughed and asked, “You two actually went to a men’s barber just before closing?” Anjali pointed at Maya. “Her idea.” Rohan turned toward Maya and asked, “So all this is your work?” Maya smiled sweetly. “I merely provided transportation and encouragement.” Anjali immediately corrected her. “A lot of encouragement.” Maya looked at Anjali’s perfectly bare head and replied, “And look how beautifully it turned out.”
The compliment was genuine, which made Maya’s feelings even more confusing. She truly thought Anjali looked beautiful and was genuinely pleased that her best friend loved what she had done. What hurt was watching Rohan love it too.
Anjali continued describing the ponytail being cut away, the clippers reducing her remaining hair to zero and her disappointment when she discovered that zero still felt rough. When she explained that she’d asked for the razor because she wanted the same completely smooth feeling she’d experienced when touching Rohan’s scalp, Rohan laughed. “So I’m responsible for this?” Anjali smiled. “Partly.” Rohan proudly replied, “I’ve finally influenced somebody positively.” Maya muttered, “That remains to be seen,” making all three laugh.
Rohan eventually asked, “So are you growing it back immediately, or are you actually going to keep the bald look?” Anjali rubbed her scalp thoughtfully before answering, “I’ll keep it for some time. I want to see how comfortable I feel with it. But honestly, after this morning’s shower, I’m already understanding why you like it.” Rohan extended his hand dramatically across the table and said, “Welcome to the lifestyle.” Anjali shook it with equal seriousness. “Thank you.” Rohan laughed and pulled her briefly into a warm hug, telling her again, “Seriously, you look great.”
As they separated, Anjali playfully tilted her bald head toward him. Rohan immediately understood and leaned his own head sideways until the sides of their clean-shaven scalps gently touched. Both started laughing at the ridiculous sight. Anjali said, “We actually do look funny together.” Rohan replied, “Matching pair.” Maya heard the exact phrase she herself had used the previous night and smiled despite the sting behind it. “Very beautiful. The matching bald couple who aren’t even a couple.” Anjali immediately protested, “Maya!” Rohan, annoyingly, only smiled.
After breakfast they went directly to the gym. This time Anjali didn’t put the cap back on. She carried it into the changing area and left it inside her bag. Walking onto the gym floor completely bald initially made her conscious of every glance around her, but once the three began training, the feeling quickly disappeared. During cardio there was no ponytail bouncing behind her; when she bent forward, nothing fell across her face; and when sweat formed across her scalp she simply wiped the towel directly over her bare head. Rohan noticed and asked with a grin, “Convenient?” Anjali smiled. “Extremely.” He replied, “Told you,” and she immediately warned him, “Don’t become arrogant.”
Their bald-club jokes continued throughout the workout. Rohan rubbed his own head and complained that Anjali had unfairly arrived with a fresher shave. Anjali proudly swept her palm across her crown and told him, “You have until tomorrow to restore club standards.” Maya joined the jokes and behaved exactly as she normally would, but underneath she was noticing everything: how quickly Anjali had become comfortable without her cap, how naturally Rohan’s attention kept returning to her and, most importantly, how removing Anjali’s hair had failed to change the one thing Maya had secretly wanted to change. Rohan liked Anjali. Her hair had never been the real reason.
By evening, back at the apartment, Anjali was standing in front of the bathroom mirror rubbing her head against the direction of growth. “I can already feel a little roughness coming back,” she complained. Maya leaned against the doorway and said, “Welcome to bald maintenance.” Anjali smiled at her reflection. “I think I’m going to shave it again.” When Maya asked, “Already?” Anjali nodded. “I want to learn how to do it myself. If I’m keeping this for a while, I can’t run to the barber every two days.”
Anjali wet her scalp, applied shaving cream and carefully began removing the faint growth herself. She worked much more slowly than the barber had, particularly around the ears and the parts of the back she couldn’t see properly. Maya watched as Anjali cautiously changed direction over the crown and then rinsed her head. After drying it, Anjali ran her palm backward over the scalp and smiled. “Not bad.” Maya stepped closer and said, “Let me check.” Anjali lowered her head slightly and laughed. “Quality-control department again?” Maya swept her palm across the crown and then down the back. “You missed a tiny patch here.” Anjali immediately felt for it and laughed. “See? This is why I need practice.”
Later they sat together talking about the day. Anjali admitted that she’d expected to feel exposed walking around bald but had become comfortable surprisingly quickly. “The shower took no time, the gym was easier, and after breakfast I didn’t even feel like putting the cap back on. I thought I’d need several days before I could walk around normally like this.” Maya studied her friend’s freshly shaved head and finally said, “You do look beautiful.” Anjali smiled. “Thank you.” Maya shook her head. “No, seriously. I thought it would suit you, but it suits you much more than I expected.” Anjali laughed. “That’s a diplomatic way of saying you expected me to look terrible.” Maya grinned. “Maybe slightly strange.” Anjali nudged her. “Wonderful friend.”
They both laughed, but Maya became quieter afterward. During the past twenty-four hours she had watched Anjali experience everything Maya had only wondered about: the strange sensation of a bare scalp against a pillow, water falling directly over the head, the remarkably quick shower, the freedom during exercise and the almost irresistible habit of running a palm across freshly shaved skin. Maya had also watched Rohan’s reaction, and that part still hurt. Yet alongside the jealousy, another kind of curiosity had been growing.
Maya reached across and slowly rubbed Anjali’s freshly shaved crown.
Anjali looked at her suspiciously and asked, “Why do you keep touching my head?” Maya left her palm there for another second before answering, “Because I’m curious.” Anjali raised an eyebrow. “About what?” Maya moved her palm once more over the smooth curve of Anjali’s scalp and said, “About what my own head would feel like.”
Anjali stared at her. Her eyes widened. “No.”
Maya smiled. “Why not?”
“Maya, you can’t be serious.”
“You did it.”
Anjali burst out laughing. “Because you spent days convincing me!”
Maya nodded calmly. “Exactly. Now you can return the favour.”
Anjali sat upright and stared at her best friend. “Wait. Are you actually saying you want to shave your head too?” Maya looked once more at Anjali’s smooth scalp. She could still remember how unexpectedly pleasant it had felt beneath her palm at the barbershop, and after watching Anjali move confidently through an entire day without hair, the curiosity no longer seemed absurd.
But curiosity wasn’t the only thing driving her.
Somewhere beneath it was the image of Rohan staring at Anjali across the breakfast table, telling her she looked beautiful, running his hand over her bald head and kissing the smooth crown. Maya knew she shouldn’t be thinking competitively. She knew perfectly well that copying Anjali’s haircut couldn’t manufacture the same connection.
Yet jealousy had already persuaded her to make one foolish experiment.
Now it was quietly suggesting another.
Maya smiled at Anjali and finally said, “Yes. I think I’m going to shave my head too. Completely smooth. I want to know what it feels like.”
For several seconds Anjali simply stared at her. Then she reached across, grabbed Maya’s hair playfully and laughed. “You realize this means all of this has to disappear?”
Maya touched her own hair, then looked at Anjali’s completely bare head.
“I know.”
Anjali’s smile grew wider. “Then I’m coming with you.”
Maya laughed. “Obviously.”
Anjali rubbed her own smooth crown proudly and added, “And this time I’m the bald expert.”
Maya looked at her best friend and smiled.
Tomorrow, perhaps, the bald club would gain another member.
And whether Maya was doing it from curiosity, friendship, jealousy—or some uncomfortable combination of all three—she had already made up her mind.
