STEPHANIE

Stephanie Gomez was having a REALLY great hair day.

Her thick, lustrous, rich brown hair rippled delicately in the afternoon breeze and glistened beautifully in the sunlight as she walked down the street, falling to the middle of her butt and shining with the color and sheen of melted chocolate.

Stephanie smiled happily as she walked into her favorite coffee shop for a latte. It was a beautiful, spring Sunday, the weather was a perfect 72 degrees, and she was dressed appropriately (and adorably) in her favorite spring outfit, a light, breezy ensemble which consisted of a white tank top underneath a flowy, fluttery white silk tunic, and paired with soft, tight white leggings. The whole look was topped off with white heels and a white leather belt tied around her waist over her tunic.

As she waited in line she looked at the nearby mirror and caught a glimpse of her hair shimmering wonderfully in the bright sunlight, which brought a smile to her face. She had deep-conditioned it last night, and spent nearly 45 minutes drying and styling it this morning to make it fall in the perfect, silky mass that tumbled delicately down her back right now.

“Damn, my hair looks good today,” she whispered to herself as she turned away from the mirror and back to the counter. Stephanie allowed herself to indulge in the self-compliment, as she was not the conceited type at all when it came to her looks, but sometimes she had to admit that she HAD it. She felt her smile broadening, but the slightest hint of sadness lurking within it as she grabbed some of her hair and held it in front of her for inspection.

Despite being incredibly grounded about her looks, Stephanie was drop dead gorgeous. Standing rather short at 5’4”, she had rich brown eyes, a dark, flawless complexion, and a perfect figure from years of swimming. Her face was beautifully shaped with delicate features, always perfectly framed by heaping mounds of soft, fluffy hair. Stephanie was very proud of her hair, which spilled around her like a waterfall of living silk, tumbling down her back and shot through with traces of golden brown from the sunshine and chlorine that was inherent in being a swimmer.

She had always had long hair, as requested by her Latina mother and doting Father, but it had become truly exceptional over the last couple of years. She had grown it from her normal length of her bra strap all the way down to the middle of her butt. It had reached that length 6 months ago, and she had spent the time since then trimming it back and regularly conditioning to it make it as beautiful, thick, glossy, and healthy as possible. The result had been nothing short of breathtaking, giving her a gorgeous head of hair that anyone would kill to have.

“…your hair dear,” a voice said behind Stephanie said, causing her to turn.

“Hmmmm?” Stephanie said sweetly as she turned to face a kind looking 70-something year old woman standing behind her, “I’m sorry, what was that? I didn’t hear you.”

“I said, I love your hair dear,” she repeated with a smile, “it’s… absolutely divine!”

“Oh! Thank you!” Stephanie said with a kind smile of her own as the lady reached out to gently caress her long locks, “that means so much to me!”

“Well it’s true darling,” the woman said with a smile at having lit up the young girl’s face, “I’ve been around the sun quite a few times and I’ve very rarely seen hair half as beautiful as yours.”

“Well, thank you,” Stephanie said sweetly as she reached down and held up some of her gorgeous silky brown hair to her face, the sweet smell of berries wafting off of it from her shampoo, “you have no idea how much I needed to hear something nice about my hair right now.”

The sweet old lady reached out and gently brushed some of Stephanie’s hair back behind her ear for her, and Stephanie suddenly realized it was her turn to order.

She got herself a caramel latte for herself and paid for the lady’s order as well, then took her drink and sat down at a nearby table and sat in silence while she sipped it.

Yes, Stephanie’s hair was beautiful… more gorgeous than almost any hair she had ever seen… and soon it would probably all be gone forever.

“Oh my God, are we really doing this?” Nicole asked as she brushed out her dark, shining brown hair, “are we all seriously agreeing to go through with this?”

Nicole was a stunning young woman, 5’8 with deep green eyes and long, gorgeous silky hair of her own. As Stephanie watched her brush it nervously, she noted that it wasn’t quite as long or as thick and healthy as her own mane, but it was exceptional hair nonetheless.

“I think it’ll be fun,” Heather said as she sat down with a bag of potato chips, “it’s the ultimate wager.”

Heather was quite a looker as well, with flawless pale skin, naturally ruby red lips, gorgeous green eyes, and brilliant, red-gold hair that fell softly to her waist and blazed brilliantly in the sunlight. She had a rock-hard physique from years of swimming, water polo, and volleyball.

“Sure, for you it’s just a wager,” Stephanie said indignantly as she watched from the bed in Sandy’s room, “you have the shortest hair of all of us.”

“Granted, that’s true,” Heather said as she grabbed two massive handfuls of brilliant red hair and held it up in front of her, “but do you think I have ANY desire to lose this hair? I still love it.”

“Well, sure but…”

“OK everyone, gather round, this is it,” Sandy, the swim team captain, walked in, her co-captain Carmen right next to her, “this is your last chance to chicken out and back out of this private wager, which I highly suggest you at least consider.”

“No one is backing out of this wager Sandy,” Stephanie said as she joined the rest of the girls on the floor, “but it doesn’t mean we aren’t scared about this.”

“Well, sure you can be scared,” Carmen said as she sat down and adjusted her lucky pink satin dress, her favorite article of clothing, “but that’s the whole point of the bet, to motivate us.”

Stephanie, Nicole, Heather, Carmen, and Sandy were the best swimmers on the varsity team, and they had every opportunity to take State this year with their speeds, but they needed something to focus them for the home stretch. Something big, something bold, something incredibly important to them. So the girls had come up with an agreement… a dramatic one, but one that would help them do what needed to be done.

The five of them finished getting into position quietly, an uncomfortable silence falling over them, and then they looked around with serious looks as Sandy spoke.

“OK, so this is it,” she said with fear in her eyes, she definitely had the most to lose after all, as her hair was by far the longest and most remarkable of them all, “starting today, we look at our 100 M averages every other week. Whoever has the lowest average… has to shave their head.”

All of the girls knew it was coming, but Stephanie still heard 5 distinct intakes of air at the words. She looked around the circle at each girl, next to her was Nicole, with her gorgeous fall of shining chestnut hair that spilled to her hips. Next down the line was Heather, with her brilliant, shimmering red hair falling beautifully to her shoulder blades.

On the other side was Carmen, their co-captain. She stood as the shortest of them at 5’3”, with dark, lovely skin, deep brown eyes, and impossibly thick and long black hair that spilled down her back to the top of her butt.

Stephanie always thought she and Carmen were on par in terms of how beautiful their hair was. While both manes were magnificent, Carmen had Stephanie beat in length while Stephanie’s hair had a more gorgeous color and beautiful sheen to it. But as Stephanie glanced at Sandy, she realized that as gorgeous as their hair was, neither one of them could hold a torch to Sandy’s own amazing mane.

Sandy was your quintessential high school prom queen: pretty, popular, and somewhat tall at 5’8”. She had remarkably bright, lovely green eyes, a beautiful face accustomed to regularly wearing her disarming, winning smile, and a swimmer’s physique. She was impossibly sweet, but had a fighter’s spirit that always pushed her to be the best, and her looks always helped compliment her champion’s personality. But as lovely as Sandy was, her hair was beyond a shadow of a doubt her greatest trait.

Sandy’s hair was a gorgeous strawberry-blond waterfall of shimmering silken waves, the color of dark honey glimmering with hints of red in the sunlight, and softer than silk to the touch. Her luscious, thick waves spilled down her back, past her waist, and rested right where her butt met her thighs. It fluttered and danced beautifully in the lightest of breezes, shimmering like silk and reflecting the lights like a halo with an almost inhuman ability to be absolutely perfect at any time.

Stephanie had been swimming with Sandy since they were kids, and she knew that while her hair used to be a light brown, years of chlorine and sun had highlighted her hair to a rich, lively golden blond. Impossibly, years of chlorine hadn’t affected its condition at all, as Sandy knew from experience that it was easily the softest, silkiest hair any of the girls had ever had the pleasure of touching. When Sandy asked Stephanie to brush it, style it, or play with it, her hair would ripple through her fingers like liquid silk, and always felt warm to the touch, even on the coldest days. It was the hair of angels, and she was willing to risk it all! If she could put her hair on the line, then the rest of the girls felt like they could do the same with our own gorgeous-but-significantly-less-remarkable hair.

“Now remember, the state finals are in May, that’s 10 weeks away,” Carmen added quietly as she stroked her long black hair delicately, “which means if we are doing this…”

“Then only one of us will be able to keep our hair,” Stephanie said sadly, barely above a whisper, she took a deep breath, then looked up with determination in her eyes, “OK, I’m in. And I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m not giving up my hair without one hell of a fight.”

She held up her hand in front of her, and almost immediately Heather’s hand went right on top of it.

“This red hair is officially on the line,” she said with a smile at Stephanie as she reached up and ran her fingers through her silky red locks, not knowing that 2 weeks from that moment it would be gone, the first victim of the bet. Nicole’s hand joined in the pile.

“I really love my hair you know,” Nicole said sadly as some of her hair spilled over her shoulder and swung into her face, “but I love you guys even more. Count me in.”

Carmen smiled and placed her hand on the others.

“I’ve spent 5 years getting my hair to look this good, and I’m going to fight tooth and nail to keep it,” Carmen said as she looked around the ring of friends, “but if I have to lose it all to win State, then so be it.”

The only one left was Sandy and her magnificent mane of golden blond silken waves. Once she put her hand in, there was only a 1 in 5 chance that her hair would survive until summer. But… with a smile, she placed her hand on the pile… which also placed her hair in serious jeopardy.

“I’m really proud of you guys,” she said with a smile, “and I’m sorry that you’re all going to be bald, but no way in hell am I losing this hair.”

Stephanie reflected on that Sunday night as she sipped her coffee. It had been exactly 28 days ago, and 14 days ago at their first meeting, Heather had been the first to lose. She had been behind Stephanie by an average of 0.14 seconds, and had been forced to shed her lovely red locks to the clippers.

Stephanie had been the one to shave her, as part of the deal had been that whoever lost had to be shaved by the 2nd closest to the bottom. This had been a deviously brilliant little touch by Sandy in an attempt to have whoever was next on the chopping block have to witness firsthand what was in store for them should they not get their act together.

It had worked. As Stephanie had plunged the clippers into Heather’s thick, vibrant red locks, she had been both thrilled at the hair falling away and horrified at the idea that in two weeks, the same would be happening to her own treasured golden-brown mane if she didn’t up her game.

Stephanie had redoubled her efforts after that, but as hard as she tried, she felt like she hadn’t made enough progress to overtake Carmen or Nicole, both of which seemed to outswim her. She would win a few, but she felt like it was nowhere near enough to save her precious hair, and as the two weeks dragged on, she felt more and more terrified that it would be her own hair that would fall to the floor on Sunday night.

So she had spent her weekend pampering and doting on her hair as much as possible. She had deep-conditioned it last night and lightly styled it, and it had come out looking beautiful for what was likely its final day on Earth. She looked down at her watch and saw that impossibly, it was already 5:45, she was supposed to meet the girls at Sandy’s house in 15 minutes.

With a sad sigh she stood up, tossed her cup in the trash, and made her way to the door, stopping ever so briefly to look in the mirror so she could smile wanly at how truly gorgeous her hair looked… and to make peace with the fact that it was all going to be gone soon.

“Hey!” Heather said as she opened the door, her head covered in the bright red stubble that had grown out since her shave, “I LOVE your outfit!”

“Thanks!” Stephanie said as she went in for a quick hug, “I picked it because it really goes well with my hair… although I don’t think that’s going to be a factor much longer.”

“Ahhh,” Heather said as she arched her eyebrows at her, “we will see… we… will… see.”

The comment in no was way was reassuring, and Stephanie shuddered, and felt a chill run up her spine as she felt her hair softly flutter behind her with the movement.

They walked up to Sandy’s bed and were met with the sight of their friends giggling over a story they had just missed, but there was something under those giggles… something terrified about what was going to happen soon.

“Alright, Stephanie’s here,” Carmen said as she got up off of Sandy’s bed, “I guess we should do this now.”

“Yeah, sure,” Nicole said sadly as she fondled her hair delicately, “let’s do it.”

Stephanie felt her heart racing even faster than it had been last week as Carmen and Sandy pulled out the record sheets and began adding up the numbers. Nicole and Stephanie looked nervously at each other, their hands occasionally reaching up to delicately run their fingers through each other’s hair one last time. Nicole was obviously nervous, but Stephanie was convinced that she was the one who wasn’t leaving the house with her hair tonight.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity, Sandy stood up. Her impossibly gorgeous mane of gentle waves danced behind her as she walked towards the others.

“So, here it is,” she said as she read off the list, “first place is me, with an average 100M time of 50 seconds flat. Next, Carmen, right behind me at 50.3 seconds.”

Carmen let out a long sigh as Sandy turned to face the other three with a serious expression.

“So that means… in third place, with an average 100M time of 51.1 seconds…”

Stephanie squeezed Nicole’s hand as she got ready to hear Nicole’s name, then braced herself to make the hard walk towards the chair.

“Stephanie,” Sandy said. Stephanie’s jaw dropped, and she heard Nicole issue a noise somewhere between a gasp and a sob as her hand went to her chest.

“So… that means…” Nicole said, then gulped.

“I’m afraid so Nicole,” Sandy said as she walked over to Stephanie and handed her the set of clippers, “Stephanie, you know what to do.”

“Oh… um…” Stephanie said, still in shock at not being the one being forced into the chair, “I’m… I’m sorry Nicole.”

“It’s… it’s OK,” Nicole said timidly as she stroked her hair frantically as Sandy set an egg timer for five minutes, the final countdown for the hair of the condemned, “I knew the risks, and it’s time to go through with it.”

Stephanie watched as Nicole’s fingers glided quickly and effortlessly through her silken brown locks, her eyes closed, clearly trying to commit the feeling to memory since her hair was as good as gone now. She knew Nicole’s hair only had moments left on this Earth, and she wondered what she would have been doing right now had she been the one who lost.

She looks so scared, but so at peace with this,
Stephanie thought to herself as Nicole continued to cherish her final moments with her beautiful brown mane, is that how I would have looked if I had lost? Is that how I’m going to look WHEN I lose?

She shook the thought out of her head as Nicole unexpectedly brought her huge sheet of shining brown silk across her face, kissing it gently and whispering “goodbye” to it under her breath, so low that Stephanie could barely hear it.

She let her hair fall back into place as she sat in the chair in front of Stephanie, then nodded to her ever so slightly.

“Do it,” she said quickly and courageously.

“But… what about the last 3 minutes?” Carmen said, gesturing at the egg time, but Nicole just shook her head slowly, her hair swinging rhythmically with the movement.

“I can’t take the suspense,” Nicole said quietly, then looked Stephanie in the eye, “Stephanie… do it. I’m ready.”

Stephanie was about to, but couldn’t resist reaching down and playing with her hair one last time for her own sake, to remember what she was fighting to save. After a moment Stephanie let Nicole’s hair fall back down, part of it falling over her left eye and obscuring her vision, and Stephanie’s heart lurched every time she saw her hair flutter slightly whenever Nicole took a breath.

Stephanie took her own deep breath as she picked up the clippers, then snapped them on. She had forgotten how startling the loud POP was that they made last time, but the buzzing in her hand was a very familiar feeling when they had stripped away Heather’s long, flaming locks.

But Heather’s hair had been nowhere near as remarkable as Nicole’s. Granted, Nicole’s wasn’t as remarkable as Stephanie’s or Carmen’s hair, and definitely a far cry from Sandy’s amazing curls, but it was beautiful nonetheless… and soon it would all be gone.

Stephanie inhaled one more time as she reached down with her left hand to hold the crown of Nicole’s head, reveling in the silky texture of her hair one last time, and with her right hand Stephanie placed the clippers at her forehead. Slowly, but forcefully, she pushed the clippers back into Nicole’s hairline, and before she knew it, they made contact… and the slow annihilation of Nicole’s hair began.

The pitch of the clippers changed as the sheer thickness of her hair slowed them, but only momentarily. They slid through her hair like a blowtorch through butter, leaving a pale strip of denuded scalp in its wake. Stephanie watched in fascination and horror as a portion of Nicole’s hair (which had just been covered with thick, soft, living brown silk) was suddenly replaced with hard, bristly stubble, especially knowing that this was only the beginning of the end for her magnificent mane.

The clippers chewed through her bangs, sliding back further and further towards Nicole’s crown and stealing away more and more of her glorious hair by the second. A moment later, the first pass was done, and a long, pale strip was now visible, surrounded by the lush jungle of gorgeous hair that still adorned most of Nicole’s head, but not for long.

Stephanie moved the clippers to the side of the strip, and pulled them backwards to strip away that mass of shining brown hair as well. It peeled it away without pause, widening the strip of stubble as it slowly continued to overtake Nicole’s lush jungle of shining brown tresses.

Nicole let out a sound somewhere between a sob and a laugh as impossibly huge masses of soft dark hair fell from her head. Just two passes had already created an enormous pile of hair on the floor, and she wondered just how large it was going to get by the time this was over.

“How does it feel?” Stephanie asked, clearly trying to break the uncomfortable silence that had fallen over the room since the clippers had first begun to systematically steal Nicole’s treasured hair away from her.

“Um…” Nicole said as she continued to feel her hair separated from her head, “it feels… cold?”

Cold was the best way to describe it. Half of her magnificent mane was already gone, and that side of her head felt bare and vulnerable to the cold in a way that she has never experienced before.

“I’m going to have to wear a beanie until it warms up,” Nicole said with a nervous chuckle as Stephanie made another pass, now working on the other side of her head and clipping away the hair on that side to make the horrible new look unanimous.

“How does it feel shaving it?” Nicole asked as another strip fell… there wasn’t much left now.

“I don’t like it,” Stephanie said as she took another pass, “I don’t like it one bit. I feel like I’m committing a crime against nature by shaving hair like this, and I’m sorry Nicole.”

“It’s OK Steph…” Nicole said honestly, now that the shock was wearing off, “but why not? You already did Heather.”

“Heather’s hair wasn’t nearly as amazing as this,” Stephanie said without pausing, a hint of a smile on her face as she turned to face Heather, “sorry Heather.”

“Hey, that’s… OK, that’s actually true,” Heather replied with mock indignation, then ran a hand over her own red stubble as Carmen and Sandy laughed.

Almost all of Nicole’s hair was gone… rapidly passing into history and being replaced with a head of stubble, and Stephanie worked quickly to get this entire ordeal over with. There was very little evidence left of the lush, soft mounds of silken tresses that had once adorned Nicole’s head, with more and more disappearing by the second. As she made another pass over the last few strands clinging to life on Nicole’s head, some of Stephanie’s own hair fell loose from behind her ear and tumbled into her view.

This is what is in store for your hair when you lose, a cruel thought popped into her head, you should enjoy your hair every second you can, because it’s only a matter of time.

Stephanie forced the idea out of her head as she stripped the last lingering hairs from Nicole’s head, then turned off the clippers and prepared for the worst.

“OK Nicole,” she said with a sigh, “you ready for your big debut?”

Nicole sighed, then nodded slowly as she stood up and walked over to the nearby mirror. She leaned over and looked at herself with a quick cry, but it passed, and soon she was rubbing her head with a look that was much closer to curiosity than the revulsion Stephanie was expecting. Stephanie watched closely, waiting for tears, screams, sobbing, the worst really… she didn’t know what to expect, but much to her surprise, Nicole actually smiled.

“This… isn’t that bad!” she said as she continued to rub her stubble, “I mean, I already miss my hair something awful, but… I could get used to this!”

“Really?” Stephanie asked happily.

“Yeah!” Nicole said as she took out her phone and took a selfie into the mirror, “my head feels so light! I’m just worried about school tomorrow.”

“Well, I don’t think it will be so bad for you,” Heather said from across the room, “most of the school already knows what to expect. After I shaved my head everyone asked me why, and I told them about our game.”

“So the school already knows?” Stephanie asked, her eyes widening, “seriously?”

“Yup!” Heather replied quickly with a smile, “I’m not sure where you’ve all been, but it’s all anyone is talking about.”

“Well, at least I won’t be hit with a million ‘WHAT DID YOU DO???’s tomorrow,” Nicole said as she continued to rub her stubble.

It wasn’t until hours later when Stephanie was getting ready for bed that the enormity of what happened today finally hit her. She was wearing a long-sleeve white satin sleep shirt that fell to her flawless thighs, and she was just putting her hair into a braid to go to sleep when suddenly her hands stopped dead in their tracks, her fingers still dug deep into her mounds of soft hair.

“Oh my God,” she whispered to herself, “I… I still have my hair!”

She giggled loudly as her hands dropped from her hair as she sank to her knees and clutched her chest at the thought, her half-completed braid flopping downward and unravelling as she reached up and fluffed up her magnificent mane. After she caught her breath and composed herself again, she stood back up, pulled out her brush, and began to gently run it through her hair, smiling and losing herself in the feeling of luscious hair that should have been gone hours ago.

But there were facts she couldn’t ignore. She had saved her hair… but for how long? Sandy was almost unstoppable in the water, and Carmen was right behind her. Stephanie was blessed to still have her hair, but it was only a matter of time until…

“No,” Stephanie whispered to herself, her hand stopping slowly putting down the brush and reaching up to run her fingers through her hair, “no, I’m going all in for this… I’m not going down without a fight…”

She looked down at her heavy, shining hair, then brought a handful of it up to her face to revel in its softness.

“And I am NOT losing my hair over this.”

She started to put her hair back up in its braid for sleeping, but smiled and thought better of it. Instead, she flopped down on the bed, her long, silky hair spilled over her chest, and gently stroked it as she laid there.

“I don’t care what it takes or how hard I have to push myself,” she whispered to her hair reassuringly, “but I’m not letting anything happen to you.”
