The week after the alley incident moved slower than usual. Classes continued, friends cracked the same jokes, teachers scolded the half-asleep students in the same tone, yet for Hiroshi and Sora, something had shifted.

The fear that had haunted her was lighter now — a shadow, not a weight. She smiled more often in class, her laughter easier. And though she didn’t say it aloud, Hiroshi could feel the way her gaze lingered on him sometimes — soft, unreadable, and full of something unspoken.

So when Saturday arrived, and Sora asked quietly, “Do you want to try again? Just us this time. No running, no interruptions,” Hiroshi’s chest nearly leapt out of his ribs.

They met in the city, this time without nerves pressing against their shoulders. Sora wore a pale blue dress with a cardigan, her blonde hair shining in the sunlight. Every time Hiroshi caught himself staring, she teased with a smirk: “Do I have something on my face?”

The date itself was ordinary, but that was what made it perfect. They browsed small stores, ate lunch at a cozy diner, and lingered at an arcade where Sora destroyed him at rhythm games, yet cheered when he finally won her a small plush rabbit from the claw machine. She hugged it to her chest as though it were priceless, and Hiroshi’s heart warmed at the sight.

Evening found them at the riverside. The sun sank low, painting the water gold and crimson. The air carried the faint scent of blooming flowers. They sat on the embankment, shoulders brushing, silence between them comfortable yet charged.

It was Sora who spoke first.

“Hiroshi,” she said, voice quieter than the river. “Do you ever think about… why people shave when they start dating? What it really means?”

Hiroshi glanced at her, then down at the faint line where her scalp had been shaved before. “…It means trust, right? A kind of promise.”

She nodded slowly. “Yeah. But it also means… letting someone see a part of you that’s vulnerable. A side you can’t hide.” She touched her hair, then lowered her hand to her lap. “I thought I ruined that. That no one would ever want to see it again.”

Hiroshi’s chest tightened. He turned toward her, gathering courage. “Sora… I do. I want to. Not because of some custom or expectation. But because it’s you. Because I…” His throat caught, but he forced it out. “I like you. More than I’ve liked anyone.”

The words hung in the air, both terrifying and liberating.

Sora’s eyes widened, shimmering in the fading light. For a long moment, she didn’t speak. Then, softly, she whispered, “I like you too, Hiroshi.”

Relief and joy flooded him, and their laughter spilled into the river breeze. They walked back in a daze, finding amusement in the smallest things, as if confessing had lifted a weight they hadn’t realized they carried.

By the time they reached Sora’s home, the sky was dark, stars blinking faintly above. She paused at the door, clutching the plush rabbit, cheeks pink. “…Do you want to come in? Just for a little while.”

Hiroshi’s heart hammered, and he nodded.

Inside, her room was small and warm, decorated with books, sketches, and little keepsakes. Sora sat on the bed, brushing her hair back with trembling fingers. “There’s… something I want you to do. Something only you.”

From a drawer, she pulled out a small electric razor. Hiroshi’s pulse quickened as he understood.

“I don’t want the side to grow out,” Sora said softly, eyes steady despite her blush. “Not anymore. I want it to be yours. I want you to shave it for me.”

Hiroshi’s hands shook as he took the razor, kneeling beside her. Sora tucked her hair away, baring the side of her scalp fully. Her trust was laid bare — fragile and radiant.

The razor buzzed to life in the quiet room. Slowly, carefully, Hiroshi ran it along the stubble, watching short strands fall away. Sora closed her eyes, a small, serene smile on her lips.

When he finished, the side of her scalp was smooth again, the mark of her past transformed into something new — something they now shared.

Sora opened her eyes, meeting his. “…Thank you.”

Hiroshi set the razor down, chest aching with emotions too large to name. He brushed his fingers gently against her scalp, and she leaned into the touch, eyes fluttering shut.

For the first time, it didn’t feel like a scar. It felt like a beginning.
