The afternoon sun filtered through the leaves of the backyard, casting a warm glow over the quiet space where Shilpa sat. Her legs were crossed beneath her, and her hands rested calmly in her lap as she relaxed, trying to make the most of the lockdown-induced pause in her busy life. She had noticed her hair had grown slightly longer than her usual boy-cut, but it didn’t feel like a big deal—just a little extra weight she had to manage.

Her son, Kiran, had been observing her for a while. He had seen how her hair was growing a little more unruly than usual and how she seemed to absentmindedly brush it away whenever the wind caught it. He also remembered something—just a few days ago, he had caught her watching videos of women getting their heads shaved with straight razors. She never mentioned anything about it, but Kiran sensed the curiosity in her gaze.

That memory stuck with him. And as he looked at his mom, sitting there so peaceful and unaware, he thought, Maybe now’s the time.

Kiran:
“Hey, Mom, your hair’s grown a bit longer than usual, huh? It’s cute, but I think we could trim it to bring it back to your usual boy-cut. How about a quick touch-up?”

Shilpa looked up at him, a little surprised but not concerned.

Shilpa:
“Yeah, I’ve noticed it’s getting a bit long. A quick trim sounds good, Kiran.”

Kiran smiled, grabbing the scissors and combing through her hair as he always did when it was time for a trim. He snipped away carefully, cutting the excess length off to bring it back to her usual short style. Shilpa relaxed into the chair, the sensation of the snips falling away soothing in its own way. It was nothing new, just a standard trim. But Kiran had other plans in mind.

As he trimmed the last of the excess length, he paused and looked at her with a more thoughtful expression.

Kiran:
“Mom, I think we should take it a step further, just a little more. Trust me, you’ll look even better.”

Shilpa, trusting Kiran and thinking it was just a slight adjustment, nodded.

Shilpa:
“Alright, just don’t take too much off, okay?”

But Kiran wasn’t listening. Instead, he reached for the straight razor, or ustra, something she had only seen in videos. He had already prepared it, and now, with his mother sitting in front of him, her eyes closed in peaceful trust, he placed the sharp blade at the crown of her head.

Kiran:
“Don’t worry, Mom. You’ll feel so much lighter after this.”

Shilpa, still thinking this was just part of a regular trim, tilted her head slightly forward as Kiran gently pressed the blade into her scalp, starting at the crown.

Then, the first stroke.

It was cold, the razor gliding effortlessly through her hair. Shilpa felt a sudden, sharp sensation at the top of her head, but before she could fully process it, she felt a few locks fall into her lap. The sound of the blade cutting through her hair was louder than she had expected. The sensation of the hair slipping away left a lightness that sent a chill down her spine.

For the first time, Shilpa felt the weight of the situation.

Shilpa:
“Wait—Kiran? What are you doing?”

But Kiran was already moving with purpose, the razor making clean, deliberate strokes from the back of her head, working its way forward, leaving smooth patches behind. The sensation of her hair being shaved away—stripped from her scalp—was something she had never anticipated.

She tried to move, to reach up and stop him, but the next stroke made her freeze. More hair fell, this time in larger sections, and she could feel the cooling sensation on her scalp as the razor exposed the soft skin underneath.

Shilpa:
“Kiran! Stop! I—what’s happening?”

Kiran’s voice was calm as he continued the task, never pausing, never looking up.

Kiran:
“It’s okay, Mom. You’re going to love it. Trust me.”

Her hands trembled as she tried to process it all. She hadn’t seen it coming, and now, there was no going back. The crown of her head was bald, and as she touched it, the smoothness made her heart race. The coolness against her fingers was strange, unexpected—and yet, there was something freeing about it.

Kiran continued to work, carefully shaving away the rest of her hair. With each stroke, Shilpa felt more of herself disappear. The strands of hair that had once framed her face now lay in a pile around her.

Finally, Kiran finished. Shilpa, still in shock, stood up and walked to the mirror, hands shaking as she tried to steady herself. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Her once-full hair was now in a dramatic contrast, the bald patch at the top of her head was now unmistakable, the smoothness of her scalp obvious.

She reached up and touched it again, the sensation still foreign and chilling. Her mind raced with emotions—anger, confusion, but also a strange sense of freedom.

Shilpa:
“Kiran… You’ve really done it now. You’ve completely changed my look.”

Kiran stood behind her, smiling gently.

Kiran:
“You look amazing, Mom. It’s just a change, but it’s a fresh start.”

Shilpa stared at her reflection, feeling the coolness of her scalp and the absence of the hair she had spent years maintaining. She couldn’t deny it—the change was drastic, and while she had been shocked at first, something about it made her feel light, unburdened.

Shilpa:
“I guess… I have no choice but to accept it now, do I?”

Kiran nodded, his eyes soft with affection.

Kiran:
“Mom, you’re beautiful no matter what. And now you’ll feel so much freer.”

Shilpa took one last look at herself, her fingers tracing the smoothness at the top of her head. She had never imagined it would happen this way, but now, as she stood there with her son beside her, she realized that sometimes change came when least expected—and that, in the end, she could accept it, no matter how it arrived.

After a few moments, Kiran disappeared from the room and came back with a small bowl of cold water. He had noticed how her exposed scalp glistened in the light, and he had one more surprise for her.

He gently poured the cold water over her bald head, sending a refreshing chill across her skin. Shilpa gasped at the sudden coolness, and Kiran’s hands, warm from the water, began to massage her smooth scalp with tender care. The sensation was oddly soothing. It was as if the cool water and the massage were erasing the last of her tension.

Shilpa:
“That feels… amazing, Kiran.”

Kiran smiled softly as he continued to massage, his fingers working gently over the smooth surface of her head, applying just the right amount of pressure. Shilpa closed her eyes, allowing herself to fully enjoy the sensation. The shock of the transformation was fading away, replaced by a calmness that settled in her body.

She had never thought she would find comfort in this situation, but as Kiran’s hands moved over her scalp, it felt like she was shedding not just her hair, but a weight she hadn’t realized she was carrying.

For the first time in a long time, Shilpa felt truly free. She took a deep breath, letting go of the last traces of her earlier frustration.

Shilpa:
“Thank you, Kiran. I didn’t think I’d ever feel this way about it, but… this is nice.”

Kiran smiled, continuing the soothing massage. They stayed in that peaceful moment for a while, Shilpa enjoying the sensation of the cold water and Kiran’s gentle touch. It was a strange and unexpected moment, but one she would never forget.
