I sat silently beside my boyfriend, Brad, as I twiddled my long blonde hair, anxiously awaiting my mother’s arrival.

We’d been seeing eachother for about a month now, however I’m only a freshman and Brad’s a sophomore, so we have to meet up secretly and the janitor’s closet is our chosen spot.

We’ve managed to go undetected the past few weeks, but today we got unlucky and the janitor found us, landing us in the principal’s office.

My mom is rather old-fashioned, and hates the way I dress and in particular my long blonde hair. Although the way I style myself is the norm nowadays, my mother is stuck in the 80s, keeping her hair cropped short, and never changing from her long floral dresses.

I gulped as my mother stormed into the principal’s office. She apologised for my behaviour before marching me out to the car.

”I’m sorry mom” I mumbled as we got into the car.

She didn’t say anything, but drove us to the nearest Walmart. I got out the car and followed her inside, it wasn’t unusual for her to go grocery shopping in the week so I assumed that was why we were here.

”It’s time you start dressing respectablely, so much so you’re not attracting unwanted attention from boys, follow me” my mom told me as we headed to the clothing section.

”I dress fine” I shrugged as I looked down at my Iron Maiden tshirt and distressed jeans.

”No you do not, it’s time you grow up, hold these” my mom sternly told me as she piled me up with old-fashioned knee length skirts, long-sleeved blouses and cardigans.

”Mom these aren’t my style at all” I protested.

”I don’t want to hear another peep out of you, I’m so disappointed in you” my mom glared at me before we headed to the checkout.

I stood with my arms crossed as she paid before walking to leave the store.

”Ah ah, not yet, we have one more stop” mom said before grabbing my arm.

I followed her across the mall until I saw the sign.

Haircuts for everyone.

She wouldn’t? Would she?

I panicked as she kept a tight grip on my arm as she dragged me into the small salon.

”Hi how can I help?” the hairdresser asked as she got out the chair. She was a rather plump woman, who was a similar age to my mom.

”My daughter got herself into a lot of trouble in school today and she needs a respectable haircut” my mum told the hairdresser.

”Of course, why don’t you come take a seat and we can discuss styles” the hairdresser said as she spun a chair round.

”Go on!” mom ushered me ahead. I slowly walked to the chair and slid into it.

The hairdresser threw a cape over me, locking my hands away.

”What sort of length were you thinking?” the hairdresser asked mom as she began brushing my hair out.

”Could we go straight around the middle of her ears with some short bangs?” mom asked.

”Of course, and did you want me to do a number one on her nape?” the hairdresser asked.

”Yes please” mom said before going to sit in the waiting area.

”Please don’t cut my hair that short!” I protested.

The hairdresser looked to my mum who insisted for her to cut it.

I accepted my fate and watched as the hairdresser began spraying my hair with water.

She picked up her scissors and I gasped as she swiftly dove in parallel to my earlobe and snipped my hair off.

Schnip, schnip, schnip was all that filled the small room as the hairdresser loped my long hair off.

I could only watch as she forcefully moved my head round, chopping about 20” off.

Soon enough, I had no long hair left, and I heard the clippers spring to life. I jumped before the hairdresser pushed my head down.

”Stay still hon” she instructed before pushing the clippers against my hairline.

I felt frozen as she mowed through my nape, leaving a very short stubble behind.

”What length did you want the bangs?” the hairdresser asked once she’d shaved my nape.

My mom got up and held her hand at the middle of my forehead.

”Bout an inch above the eyebrows then?” the hairdresser confirmed.

”Yes please” mom grinned as she ran her hands over my now short hair.

I shut my eyes as the hairdresser combed a v shaped section of hair over my eyes. She slid the scissors in before closing them very high up my forehead.

Schnick, schnick, schnick, the scissors went as she made my bangs thicker and thicker.

I opened my eyes as she grabbed the hairdryer and some mousse to see my face was now exposed, my hair fell to the middle of my ears and I had bangs that were only about an inch in length tickling my forehead.

The hairdresser ruffled my hair and aggressively styled it with the round brush as she dried it.

”How’s that for you?” the hairdresser looked between my mom and I.

”It’s lovely!” my mom exclaimed.

”It’s too short” I huffed as I got out of the chair, sad as I saw my long blonde hair on the floor.

I stood behind my mom as she paid and kept my distance from her as we headed back to the car.

”Stop moping, you’ll thank me one day for this style, you’ll begin to do so much better in school now” mom said as we pulled away from the carpark.
