Wilder Westen 4
“Was ist passiert?” Fragt Joy.
„Ein Hinterhalt im Wald. Ich war wahrscheinlich keine Sekunde fokussiert. “”
“WHO?” “Zwei Männer. Ich dachte, ich wäre eine leichte Beute.”
“Nachdem sie dich erschossen haben, sind sie dir nicht weiter gefolgt?”
“Nein, konnten sie nicht. Und ich war so schwach, dass ich sie nicht mehr begraben konnte.”
“Du hast sie getötet! Zwei bewaffnete Männer? In deinem Zustand?”
Sheena is silent. And Joy puts the big Colt on the table:
“And with just two balls? Who are you?”
Sheena doesn’t touch her Colt.
“I come from the south, worked there for a few months on a small ranch and am now on the way to visit my sister.”
A longer pause.
“And you? You run the farm all by yourself? “” Yes, since the death of my parents I have lived here with my aunt and uncle. But I’ve been here alone for a year. And my neighbors help me as best they can. ”
Tears fill Joy’s eyes and Sheena silently takes her in her arms.
“My uncle discovered a small copper mine up there in the mountains and exploited it on the side. It collapsed two years ago and he died in an accident. My aunt and I got along fine, but then robberies started piling up on the farms around here. People suspected Indians, so the mood for Indians here is not that good. ” Joy pauses.
“It was on my birthday. Four riders, two of them women, came into the yard. And we had no suspicions about the women. If only we had been more careful. They wanted to know where the gold from our mine is.
“Bring her into the house” ordered the blonde woman, she was probably the leader. They handcuffed my aunt and me to a chair. The men then searched our house. But we had no gold or copper.
No gold! Then they let out their anger at us:
The black-haired woman suddenly started pulling the hairpins out of Aunt Ann’s hair, until it flooded openly over the back of the chair.
“We have something golden there.” “Joe! There is work for you. ”
Then Joe came with scissors. I can still see his nasty grin when he grabs Aunt Ann’s long blonde curls from the front and cuts them off very briefly with scissors. A handful after another. He didn’t stop until he cut all of her hair off. She was howling.
Then it was my turn. My red braid, longer than yours. Aunt Ann tied him extra high today and braided it very tightly.
The woman grabbed my braid and pulled it up while the other wanted to cut it off with scissors. But because he was so thick and tightly braided, he hardly got through. It took forever and it hurt so much.
Then I suddenly heard Aunt Ann whine. The younger one found a razor knife. And while one of them cut off the rest of my hair, I had to watch the other shave her head with the short hair, ”sobs Joy.
“Fortunately, our friends came to the valley in the evening, Aunt Ann had invited them for my birthday and they freed us.
The four were already a few hours ahead and they could not catch up with them. Aunt Ann went to see her sister, she couldn’t stand it here anymore. But I really wanted to stay.
Sheena takes her in her arms and Joy howls properly.
Sheena murmurs softly: “I know this handwriting.”
A while later.
“That’s how I got to the farm. And you? What’s your story? ”
Sheena’s gaze falls on the colt on the table.
“This is my father’s legacy.” She holds up both of her braids.
“And that, my mother’s legacy.”
Two weeks have passed and Sheena`s wound heals well.
She helps Joy around the house as best she can.
One morning she hears Joy cursing violently from the bathroom.
She opens the door and sees Joy standing in front of the mirror with a comb and scissors. “Are too long again and today I just can’t get it done!” She scolds. “What?” “Cutting my hair short! Can you help me?” “I? How then? ”Joy sits on a stool and presses Sheena comb and scissors into her hand. “You drive the comb into your hair, pull it up a centimeter and just cut everything that looks out. Shorter on the sides and back! “” If you think I can? ”
“For sure! Very simple. “And Sheena gets started. About 3 cm she trims Joy`s red hair into a fresh pixie. Joy looks in the mirror:
“It’s perfect. I’ve never been able to do it so smoothly. ”
Her hand strokes the raised hair and the even shorter cut back of the head. “Really perfect! And now you! “” What? I?”
Joy reaches into Sheena’s back-length black hair. “Should be cut urgently. Isn’t it annoying for you to constantly worry about that long hair? And with your injured shoulder. ”
“How do you mean? Actually, but as a half Indian? ”
“I’ve seen for myself how long it takes to wash and braid your hair.”
Joy looks at Sheena, who is standing in front of her with her long long hair.
“Sit down!” “What are you going to do?”
“I will now enchant a squaw into a lady.” “But …”
Joy’s smile does not allow resistance.
She stands in front of her with comb and scissors in hand, while Sheena hesitantly sits on the stool. Sheena sees the open scissors coming at her shoulder height from the front. “But not too short!”
“Don’t worry, I’m not scalping you,” laughs Joy.
The blades dip just under her shoulder blade into black hair.
It crunches. Joy has to cut several times until she is through the depth of the thick hair and the first long hair comes loose and falls off.
She cuts into Sheena`s thick mane almost endlessly and works over her back. Again and again the comb runs through the hair and again and again Joy finds something to cut off.
The center parting is accurate and all hair is blunt and cut to the same length. “So get up now.” Sheena looks at herself in the mirror.
“Well, how do you like yourself? It’s not too short. And above all, you can now wear your hair open. ”Sheena smiles a little sheepishly. Then she shakes her head back and side. The shiny black hair swirls around her head, then stays on her face. “I don’t see anything anymore!”
Hm,” Joy thinks as Sheena brushes her hair from her face.
“I have an idea, sit down again.”
Joy combs it through again and then cuts off a large portion of hair at the front to comb it directly over her face. “Now hold still.” She lifts Sheena’s chin and puts the scissors 1 centimeter above Sheena’s eyebrows. Snap and the hair falls on her lap. Snap, snap, straight over the forehead, Joy cuts her full straight bangs into her temples. “So, try again.” This time, no hair gets stuck in Sheena’s face. “Perfect,” says Joy satisfied, “long enough and yet they won’t hinder you.” Sheena sees the huge mountain of her cut black hair lying on the floor.
“I still have to get used to that.”
A large ranch with several buildings. The cowboys returning from the pastures are bustling with activity. A blonde woman is enthroned in a heavy leather armchair in the main house salon. “Aline! Bring me a whiskey! ”
Indeed! Our old friend Victoria!
She did it. Wedding two months ago with the largest rancher in the wider area. Too bad that he was buried a week ago. He looked like the blooming life.
The ranch now belongs to Victoria.
Aline hands her the glass that she empties in one go. “One more thing!”
Victoria has been visibly excited since visiting.
Geraldine Sutter, the teacher from the small town nearby.
Does this person dare to suspect that Victoria was involved in the death of her husband! This will have consequences!
“Are Joe and Linus back?” “No, Victoria.”
“If you are there you should contact me immediately! Now go to work! ”
It takes three days until Joe and Linus come to the ranch.
“You are three days late! Why does it take so long to deliver the goods to the man or the woman? “” We made a little detour just to bring something with you. “” So what? “” Here! ”
Joe reaches into his saddlebag and pulls out a bush of long blonde hair.
“Isn’t that a gem?”
Victoria slowly lets the soft, thick bush slide over her hand.
“Beautiful. Are there more of them? Now for business, did you find a buyer for my goods? “” In Wichita there is a dealer who specializes in “exotic” products. ”
“Very good. But first I have another task for you.
And it’s called “Geraldine Sutter”. Think about something. ”
When the two are gone, she calls Aline. “Here, the blonde hair. You make me a pretty wig out of it. ”
Geraldine Sutter is a woman in her mid-thirties and tends to be chubby. She is not only a teacher in this small community, but also a self-appointed guardian of customs. For this reason, their popularity tends towards zero, especially among the male population.
Even the women shake their heads without understanding when they again demand compliance with their own rules. Often you let her feel her unpopularity, but she remains hard against any contradiction.
Like every Sunday morning, she stands in front of the mirror and brushes her back-length brown hair through, then tied it up tightly at the back of the head and braided it. The braid is then tucked up properly.
The church starts right away and the thick braid is still hanging over her back when she hears the creak of her front door. Two masked men stand in front of her. Today Geraldine Sutter will not go to church for the first time on Sundays. She sits on a stool in front of her kitchen table and runs her hand in disbelief over her smooth-shaven skull.
There is a clear message in front of her on the table:
“If you don’t leave town immediately we’ll come back!”
This is too much! Geraldine Sutter grabs her horse and leaves.
From a distance, she hears the “Halejuja” of the church choir.
On the ranch, Victoria sits in her leather armchair, a thick, 60 cm long, brown braid slides through her hand. “I have to consolidate my position here on the ranch and in the city,” she thinks.
> I will convert a small part of the pasture into farmland. It is best to employ women from the city for the management, this gives the women an income and I the gratitude and recognition. Our sheriff also wants to stop soon. He is a bit old and deserves it. Who could I use?<
She visits Aline in her study and looks around.
Aline is sitting at the table and is dividing long wavy blond hair into small strands. Two finished wigs hang over wooden balls.
On the left a spinning wheel and next to it a small loom. A brown piece of cloth, Aline’s trial work. Victoria takes it in hand, so soft and fragrant.
There is a crown on the shelf, braided from thin black braids.
> Aline`s own hair, which I cut off her back then. <
“Aline, my faithful soul,” Victoria begins, “I see you have talent. Do you like doing this work? “” Yes Victoria, very much. “” Then I have to come up with something to provide you with supplies. Here take this first. ”
She pulls the brown braid out of the linen sack. And you can process the leftovers in here for my scarf. “” Thank you Victoria. ”
Then she lets a young cowboy come to her.
His name is Fred and if she interprets his eyes correctly he is deeply in love with her. “Fred, you know I keep a lot of things on you.” “Thanks Ma’m.”
Embarrassed, he turns his hat in his hand. “A new sheriff will soon be elected in the city and I think you would be the right man for it.”
“But Ma’m …” “Nothing but! Would you love the job for me? ”
“Yes, but the sheriff is elected.”
“Let me worry about that. Tomorrow we will ride into the city. ”
Victoria leaves it up to Fred to let women on the ranch hire women to farm a piece of land. For many farmers, an additional income would be the salvation and five women are quickly found.
Victoria’s reputation rises immensely, where she should actually be the farmers’ greatest enemy as a rancher. But she wants to change times, Fred announces.
So it happens that Fred is known in the city.
When the sheriff elections are coming up, it is no longer an issue that Fred is elected.
One morning Joy and Sheena load heavy sacks onto the car.
They work and laugh with each other.
How good that Sheena is doing, to live undetected and free.
Two horses are approaching the farm. Joy reaches for the Winchester, Sheena stands diagonally behind her. Joy recognizes two of her neighbors and lowers the gun barrel.
Sheena is no longer behind her. A voice behind the two:
“Hands up! And up to the sky! ”
Unsettled, they raise their hands and turn around. There’s a woman behind you, an Indian! No guns in hand! He looks at Joy.
“What the hell,” he takes his hands down. A revolver barks and his hat sails through the air. He turns back to Sheena, who is still in the same position without a gun in her hand as before the shot. Smoke ripples from the barrel of her gun in the holster.
“Sheena not!” Yells Joy, “these are my neighbors! Harry and his son Tom. ”She runs past the two and falls into Sheena’s arms.
“What was that! You just stood behind me? ”
Sheena’s face is hard as stone, but Joy notices how Sheena’s muscles and tendons relax.
“Sorry Joy, I didn’t know that.” “May we get off now?” Asks the older man. “Yes Harry, come in and I’ll make you a decent breakfast.”
To Sheena: “I don’t mean that! I didn’t see you pull, just a shadowy movement. ”“ Let it be, ”Sheena says only and picks up the holed hat to hand it to Harry.
“Of course I’ll pay you the hat.”
There are plenty of beans with bacon for breakfast, and Joy tells how she looked after Sheena in a healthy way. Harry gives Sheena a hard look, then examines his hat. “So you are Sheena?” Sheena is sitting opposite him at the table, but has not eaten or said anything. “Half-breed?” Sheena does not react, no expression shows anything of her. “It’s okay with the hat,” he says.
“I think I can wear it with pride from now on.” “Harry, what do you mean?” Asks Joy uncertainly now. “I’m not entirely sure, but the Sheena I’ve heard of is a half-breed and had two long black braids.”
“Harry, what are you talking about? I was the one with the braids! I cut her hair! “” You? And you are still alive? ”
“My parents called me Sheena,” he whispers softly and looks her in the eye. “Dad what did you hear?” Asked his son Tom.
“Faster than the wind and quieter than the night!”
“She is a gunslinger? Uh, woman? ”Tom asks almost in awe.
“No!” Harry looks Sheena in the eye forever. Then he turns to his son: “Tom, if you only tell a soul something about what we have experienced today and who we have met, I will beat you not softly. Do you understand me! ”He looks at Sheena again and sees the grateful expression in her eyes.
A tear runs down his cheek. “If only you were there a year earlier.”
Joy followed the scene with her mouth open. Now she doesn’t know anything anymore. “Tom make you useful and help the girls recharge,”
Harry changes the subject. “By the way, we wanted to invite you, both, next weekend. Tom marries his Mary. ”
“Great! Of course we like to come. ”
Many miles away.
Victoria`s carriage stops in front of the sheriff’s office.
“Fred, you arrested one of the saloon joy girls?”
“Megan. She stole the wallet from one of your cowboys. ”
“Then let me have a look at her.” In one of the cells sits a young girl with completely wailed eyes. “So, you stole my Linus wallet.” “No ma’m! I didn’t! “” But she was found with you. “The girl starts to cry again. “I don’t know how she got into my chamber. Really!”
“But you sat on Linus’ lap beforehand, there are witnesses for that.”
“No, I wasn’t!” whines the girl.
Victoria looks at the hair, artfully pinned up at the back of the head.
Blue black shiny! A lot, a lot and definitely very long.
“The sheriff says we should wait until the district judge arrives in 14 days and then most likely will send you to federal prison.” I haven’t done anything!”
Victoria’s plan seems to be working.
“Or else,” she pauses. “What or what?” She asked hopefully.
“Megan, open your hair.” “My hair? How come?”
“Just do it.” Megan pulls the needles out of her pinned up hair until it falls openly over her back like a flood. She looks questioningly at Victoria.
“Extremely beautiful hair, so thick and so long. You’re sure to be your pride. ”The girl nods. Linus is now also in the cell wing, he has a linen bag in his hand. “What would you give Linus if he withdraws his ad?” Asks Victoria with a smile. Megan’s eyes light up. “Would he? I saved a few dollars, he can have that. ”“ Is that enough? ”“ I don’t think so. ”
“But I have nothing else.”
“I told you that you have very beautiful hair. It almost reminds me of an Indian woman, so black and so long. Linus would love to cut your hair. “” Cut my hair? “Megan asked confused.
“The mail coach leaves in two hours. You could sit in there or wait for the judge here. ”Megan stares at Victoria`s grinning face in disbelief. “Fred bring us a stool,” she calls to the sheriff. “And then make sure that nobody bothers us.” Linus takes a pair of scissors from his burlap sack and grins. His hand grabs Megan’s hair from the front. The girl closes her eyes, then hears the crunching sound as the scissors cut her soft hair.
Joy and Sheena get ready for the wedding and then go there by carriage. “Don’t be alarmed when you see Mary. Her parents, like mine, are also from Ireland and she has the same red hair as I do. ”After a while, Joy continues chattering:“ Yours may be a little longer than mine, but I have more freckles for that. ”Both laugh.
The festival will be a complete success. Sheena is warmly received and realizes that Harry and Tom have said nothing. Even Sheena dances with exuberance. Her open black hair swirls around her head and the bangs make her look years younger. The slightly longer hair was probably an understatement,
Mary’s thick red hair stretched to the waiste.
They drive home in the carriage late at night.
The next morning Joy stands in the door, completely drowsy.
Sheena saddles her stallion, next to her is the travel bag.
“Sheena! You can’t ride away! ”
“But I have to. My sister is waiting for me. ”
“No Sheena, please stay a little longer.” Joy wraps her arms around Sheena.
“I must. I just waited for the wedding. ”Now Sheena takes Joy in her arms. “Thank you for everything, including this,” she grabs her shoulder-length hair and smiles at Joy. She swings onto her stallion.
In the distance you can hear the thunder of three rifle shots fired in quick succession. Joy’s facial expression changes suddenly.
“The distress signal! It came from Harry’s Farm! ”
Sheena`s stallion gallops from the stall from the farm.
Joy grabs the Winchester and jumps on her bareback horse.
She has no chance of catching up with Sheena.
Sheena`s horse stops abruptly in front of Harry. “What happened?”
“Four men. We were outside on the plantations. ”
His face is all gray.Jetzt erreicht auch Joy die Farm. „Was ist passiert, Harry?“
Er streicht sich übers Haar: „Mary und Maud, genau wie bei dir damals.“
„Wie Now Joy also reaches the farm. “What happened, Harry?”
He strokes his hair: “Mary and Maud, just like you did back then.”
“How much head start?” Sheena only asks. “Over three hours. That is too much, we never catch up with them. Tom left anyway to pursue her. Hopefully he doesn’t do anything stupid. ”
Sheena runs away in a gallop.
“How much head start?” Sheena only asks. “Over three hours. That is too much, we never catch up with them. Tom left anyway to pursue her. Hopefully he doesn’t do anything stupid. ” Sheena runs away in a gallop.
It’s getting dark. Sheena smelled the smell of a campfire a few miles away. She explores the area.
“Well, was it fun for you?” Asks the older man. “Why, surely.”
“And how the redhead screamed when I went to her braids.” “Lady Vic will definitely pay us an extra premium for the red hair.”
“But on the next tour I can go with the scissors.”
Sheena discovers Tom. Crouched anxiously, he sits behind a tree trunk.
>Fortunately, he hasn’t done anything yet<
Sheena silently climbs a tree by the fire and waits. Suddenly she runs out on a branch. She jumps and a sea of sparks whirls up as she lands in the middle of the fire. “What …” shouts one of the men and collapses with a hole in the forehead. “The Half-Blood!” Yells Joe. Crouching in the middle of the fire, Sheena swings around. Her open hair swirls through the sparks and catches fire.
A fire devil! And their fire from the Colt sends death.
Someone jumps at her and pushes her out of the fire. When falling, it turns on its own axis. “It’s me! Tom! ”She can’t stop the shot, but she can change her turn. The bullet whistles into the forest.
With his bare hands, Tom extinguishes the flames in her hair and clothes.
Three days later, two horses approach Harry’s farm.
Sheena has bandaged Tom’s hands, her clothes have large burn holes, her black hair is scorched up to her ears.
A mug of coffee awakens your spirits in the farm.
Harry and Joy sit across from them.
Sheena sets the cup down: “There are four new graves at the top of the pass.”
“Sheena!” Yells Joy, “there were four of them!”
“That was their mistake,” she murmurs.
“You two have …?” Tom just shakes his head and looks at Sheena.
Two shaved women sneak down the stairs.
Tom says the first word in days quietly.
“She was the fire devil!”
“What happened?” Harry wants to know now.
Sheena looks at Tom and only whispers “Later Tom.”
“Ladys,” says Sheena without turning around, “I brought something that was mine. Tom please get my saddle bag. ”
They sit quietly at the table. Tom empties the contents on the table and Mary instinctively reaches for her long red hair bush.
“You were suddenly standing in front of us.” Maud squeezes Mary’s hand.
“I have to tell you.” Maud nods silently.
“They tied us to the chairs and then opened our hair.
They tied our hair up on the head with cords, very tightly until it hurt. Then someone came with scissors.
First me, then Maud. And that was still not enough for them. ”
Mary schluchzt.
