The Weight of Gold
The humid air of the hallway clung to me as I pressed the doorbell to Marin’s apartment. The chime echoed faintly inside, followed almost immediately by the familiar patter of her bare feet against the hardwood floor.
The door unlatched and swung open, revealing Marin wrapped snugly in a white bath towel. Her shoulders were bare, flushed with the lingering heat of a recent shower, and her magnificent blonde hair was completely hidden, twisted up securely in a matching white hair towel.
“WHOA! YOU’RE EARLY!” she exclaimed, her wide pink eyes blinking in surprise.
“I can wait outside,” I offered, rubbing the back of my neck.
Marin just smiled, a bright, disarming expression that instantly melted away any awkwardness. “ACTUALLY… PERFECT TIMING,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “I JUST FINISHED MY SHOWER. CAN YOU HELP ME GET READY?”
“SHE OPENS THE DOOR WIDER. STILL COMPLETELY CASUAL,” taking a step back into the cool interior of her apartment. “SHE DISAPPEARS BACK TOWARD HER ROOM… BEFORE I EVEN ANSWER”
“I FOLLOW,” stepping out of my shoes and into the apartment.
The Unveiling
I found her in her room, a space entirely dedicated to her passions. “SHE SITS ON HER STOOL,” positioned perfectly in front of her brightly lit vanity mirror. She looked at my reflection in the glass and offered a soft, expectant smile. “SHE TILTS HER HEAD TOWARD ME,” a silent invitation.
“COULD YOU UNWRAP IT?” she asked softly.
My hands were surprisingly careful as I reached out. “I CAREFULLY REMOVE THE TOWEL”. As the fabric loosened, “SHE GIVES A SMALL SHAKE OF HER HEAD”.
The visual was breathtaking. “HER LONG HAIR TUMBLES DOWN… …WATER DRIPS FROM THE PINK TIPS”. The sheer volume of it seemed to fill the space around her shoulders, a cascade of golden silk that cascaded down her back. Instantly, “THE ROOM FILLS- JUST FOR A MOMENT- …WITH THE SCENT OF SHAMPOO”. It was a sweet, intoxicating aroma that made the intimate act of helping her suddenly feel deeply sensual.
“HERE- MY FAVORITE BRUSH,” she said, holding out a wide-bristle brush. “TAKE YOUR TIME. MAKE IT NICE.”
I took the brush, feeling a sudden sense of responsibility. “YOU’VE GOT THIS,” I muttered to myself. “ONE SECTION AT A TIME”
As I lifted the first heavy section of her damp hair, the reality of her signature look set in. “HER HAIR IS INCREDIBLY LONG. MORE THAN I EXPECTED. AND SURPRISINGLY HEAVY. IT HAS REAL WEIGHT TO IT”. Gathering it in my hands felt like holding something precious. The water made the strands cling together, heavy and cool against my palms.
“TOO HOT!” she suddenly giggled as the warm air from the blow dryer hit her neck. “AHA HA HA!”
I adjusted the heat and began to work the brush through the thick locks. “AT FIRST, THERE ARE A FEW TANGLES,” the brush catching slightly in the dense, damp lengths. But I was patient, working from the pink-dyed tips upward.
“BUT GRADUALLY… IT GLIDES”. The texture transformed under the heat of the dryer and the tension of the brush. “SILKY. SOFT. EVERY STRAND FALLS PERFECTLY INTO PLACE”. The sensual rhythm of brushing—the long, smooth strokes down the entire length of her back—was hypnotic. I watched the golden strands slip through my fingers, admiring the way the light caught the pale blonde and the vibrant pink ends. “SOFT. FLUFFY. PERFECT”.
Marin watched my focused expression in the mirror. “YOU’RE ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD,” she praised, a genuine note of appreciation in her voice.
With the hair fully dried and incredibly voluminous, my hands lingered in the thick strands. The possibilities were endless. We began to play with the sheer mass of it, testing different silhouettes.
-
HIGH PONYTAIL: “HOW’S THIS?” she asked, the thick tail swishing heavily behind her.
-
TWIN TAILS: “COSPLAY POTENTIAL,” I noted, lifting the heavy bundles on either side of her face.
-
FRENCH BRAID: The sensual, intricate weaving of the thick locks.
-
LOW PONYTAIL: “ELEGANT?” she mused.
-
HALF-UP STYLE: “DATE MATERIAL?” I suggested, letting the bottom half curtain her back.
-
Even letting it fall around her face: “TOO CUTE?”
“SHE LOOKS AT HERSELF” in the mirror, turning her head side to side to admire the weight and flow of the long hair. “THEN GENTLY REMOVES EVERYTHING”. Letting it fall completely loose, “SHE RECREATES HER SIGNATURE HAIRSTYLE”.
“CAN’T BETRAY THE CLASSIC,” I observed.
“NAH,” she agreed. “SHE SMILES. SHE’S ATTACHED. TO MORE THAN JUST THE LOOK”. Her hair was a part of her identity, a sensory blanket that draped over her, heavy, familiar, and intensely feminine.
“I’LL BE RIGHT OUT!” she announced. “SHE HEADED INTO THE BATHROOM TO GET DRESSED”.
“WHILE I WAIT, HER ROOM SAYS EVERYTHING. HER PASSIONS. HER WORLD,” I thought, taking in the cosplay magazines, the fabrics, and the sheer dedication she poured into her craft.
A few minutes later, she emerged in her school uniform, her immaculate, heavy blonde hair framing her crisp white shirt and tie. “WELL? COME ON. WE’RE GONNA MISS THE TRAIN,” she grinned.
“YOU LEAVE THE APARTMENT TOGETHER. AS THE DOOR LOCKS BEHIND YOU… NEITHER OF YOU REALIZES THIS ORDINARY SHOPPING TRIP IS ABOUT TO BECOME A DAY NEITHER OF YOU WILL EVER FORGET”
The Dare
We ended up at the mall, sitting across from each other in a bustling food court. Marin was radiating energy, holding a massive strawberry and chocolate crepe from ‘Cafe Sweet Days’.
“AND THEN I FOUND THE PERFECT FABRIC! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW RARE IT IS!” she chattered enthusiastically, taking a bite of her crepe.
As she talked, she reached across the table, her delicate fingers lightly catching a long, unruly strand of my hair that had fallen into my eyes. The touch was brief but incredibly electric. “YOUR HAIR’S GETTING PRETTY LONG,” she noted, her eyes tracing the messy mop on my head.
“YEAH. I’VE BEEN MEANING TO GET IT CUT,” I admitted, brushing it back.
“MEANING TO?” Marin laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “IT’S PRACTICALLY ATTACKING ME FROM ACROSS THE TABLE!”
We finished our crepes and wandered down the street, looking for a salon. We passed a sleek, modern establishment with a minimalist sign. “THAT SALON LOOKS EXPENSIVE,” I muttered, intimidated by the pristine aesthetic.
I pointed across the street to a much older, rugged-looking shop. “WHAT ABOUT THE BARBERSHOP?”
Marin followed my gaze. “THE TINY ONE WITH THE SPINNING POLE? THAT SALON LOOKS AMAZING! LET’S GO!” she declared, already pulling me toward the crosswalk.
“WAIT. AM I EVEN ALLOWED INSIDE A MEN’S BARBERSHOP?” she asked playfully, pausing at the glass door.
“IT’S NOT A SECRET CLUB,” I laughed, pushing the door open to the smell of talcum powder, shaving cream, and Barbicide. “ANYONE NEEDING A HAIRCUT IS WELCOME”.
“OKAY! HAIRCUT DATE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED!” she cheered, stepping into the masculine space.
I sat in the heavy leather barber chair. The barber, an older gentleman with a thick beard, draped the black cutting cape over my shoulders. Marin stood right beside the chair, vibrating with excitement.
“COULD YOU TURN HIM AROUND?” she asked the barber, a wicked grin spreading across her face. “AWAY FROM THE MIRROR?”
The barber chuckled and pumped the chair, spinning me so I faced the street instead of my own reflection.
“YEAH! I WANT HIS REACTION TO BE A SURPRISE,” Marin declared, clapping her hands together.
“YOU’RE ENJOYING THIS ALREADY,” I sighed, feeling completely at her mercy.
She leaned in close, her eyes fixated on my messy hair. “WHAT IF YOU WENT REALLY SHORT?” she whispered, her voice carrying a thrilling, dangerous edge. “BUZZCUT SHORT”.
“EASY FOR YOU TO SAY. IT ISN’T YOUR HAIR,” I retorted, acutely aware of the heavy golden curtain draped over her own shoulders.
“I HONESTLY THINK YOU’D LOOK AMAZING,” she insisted, her gaze locking with mine.
The challenge hung in the air. The heavy, sensual atmosphere of the barbershop seemed to amplify the moment. “THAT SOUNDS DANGEROUS,” I swallowed hard. “FINE. SAME GUARD ALL OVER. AND IF YOU HATE IT, I’LL OWE YOU ONE”.
Marin’s eyes widened with thrill. The barber switched on the clippers. The heavy, mechanical BZZZZZZZZ! vibrated through the air, vibrating right down into my chest.
He pressed the cold steel of the blades to my forehead and drove them straight back through the center of my long hair. A massive clump of hair instantly detached, cascading down the nylon cape.
“WHOA!” Marin gasped, leaning over me, completely mesmerized. “THAT FIRST STRIP TOOK OFF SO MUCH!”
“STILL THINK THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?” I asked, feeling the sudden, shocking chill of the air conditioning on my newly exposed scalp.
“ASK ME WHEN I STOP BEING FASCINATED,” she murmured, unable to look away from the clippers. She reached down, picking up a thick lock of my discarded hair from the cape. “LOOK! THIS USED TO BE ATTACHED TO YOU!”
“THANK YOU FOR THE REMINDER,” I said dryly.
She ran her fingers over my newly buzzed head, a look of pure delight on her face. “IT’S SO SOFT! OKAY. I ABSOLUTELY MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE,” she concluded.
The Surrender
I sat up, brushing the stray clippings from my neck. My head felt incredibly light, almost naked. I turned to look at Marin, who was still admiring her handiwork.
“YOU SAID YOU OWED ME ONE,” I said slowly, the idea forming in my mind like a spark.
Marin paused, her hand hovering over my buzzed head.
“YOUR TURN,” I challenged, looking directly at the heavy, waist-length blonde hair that defined her. “WE COULD MATCH”.
Her jaw dropped. She grabbed the thick lengths of her hair defensively. “I KNEW THAT SENTENCE WOULD COME BACK TO HAUNT ME,” she groaned. “A BUZZCUT?! ABSOLUTELY NOT! DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG THIS TOOK TO GROW?”
“GOOD, BECAUSE I WAS ABOUT TO ESCAPE THROUGH THE WINDOW,” she joked, though her grip on her hair didn’t loosen.
“I’M NOT ASKING YOU TO BUZZ IT,” I compromised, feeling the thrill of the negotiation. “START WITH A BOB”.
Her eyes darted to the mirror. “DRAMATIC, STYLISH, AND YOU CAN STOP THERE,” I coaxed, knowing the temptation of a drastic change was pulling at her.
She bit her lip, staring at her reflection, imagining the weight of her hair completely gone. “EXACTLY,” she breathed. She turned to the barber. “OKAY. ONE BOB. THAT’S THE DEAL”.
“CHIN LENGTH?” she asked, tracing a line across her jaw. “AND WE KEEP SOME PINK?”
She traded places with me, settling into the heavy leather chair. The barber draped the black cape over her white blouse, completely obscuring her uniform. He gathered her incredibly long, heavy blonde hair into his hands, pulling it straight back. The tension in the room was palpable. The sheer sensuality of her hair—so prized, so pampered—about to be severed.
He took his large shears and slid them horizontally across the back of her neck.
CHOP!
The sound was shockingly loud. Thick, heavy bundles of blonde and pink hair detached instantly, sliding off the cape and pooling onto the floor.
“THAT WAS AN ENTIRE HANDFUL!” Marin gasped, her eyes going wide as she felt the massive release of weight from her scalp.
“STILL OKAY? LET’S KEEP GOING,” the barber asked calmly.
“YOU CAN STILL STOP WITH A VERY STRANGE MULLET,” I teased.
Marin shook her head, her neck suddenly looking incredibly long and vulnerable. “THERE’S NOTHING TOUCHING MY BACK ANYMORE,” she whispered, shivering slightly at the sensation of the cool air against her bare nape. “ABSOLUTELY NOT. FINISH THE BOB”.
The barber continued, shearing off the length on the right side. The contrast was staggering.
“ONE SIDE IS MARIN,” I said, looking at the profile of her chin-length bob. I walked around to her left side, where the heavy waist-length hair still hung down. “THE OTHER SIDE IS MARIN’S DISTANT ANCESTOR”.
“THE SHORT SIDE SUITS YOU,” I encouraged.
“THEN MAKE THE OTHER SIDE MATCH BEFORE SOMEONE TAKES A PHOTO!” she panicked playfully.
With a few more heavy snips, the remaining length fell away. The barber blew dry the new style, letting the chin-length hair frame her face. She shook her head, the shortened strands swishing weightlessly around her cheeks.
“IT’S SO LIGHT!” she marveled, running her hands through the ends.
“AND YOU STILL LOOK LIKE YOURSELF,” I smiled.
“A COOLER, SIGNIFICANTLY MORE AERODYNAMIC VERSION OF MYSELF,” she agreed, grinning proudly into the mirror. “THE BOB LOOKS GREAT”.
I leaned against the counter, watching the thrill of the transformation wash over her. “I HEAR A ‘BUT’ COMING,” she narrowed her eyes at my expression.
“BUT A SOFT PIXIE WOULD FRAME YOUR FACE EVEN BETTER,” I suggested, pushing the boundary.
She touched the ends of her bob, feeling the sudden, addictive rush of shedding the weight. “WELL I DID CUT OFF THE BULK ALREADY,” she rationalized. “HUH? IT’S JUST A LITTLE BIT SHORTER”.
“COMPLETELY YOUR CHOICE,” I said, holding my breath.
“OKAY. PIXIE ONLY,” she finalized, taking a deep breath.
The Point of No Return
The barber didn’t hesitate. He picked up the clippers.
“WE’LL BLEND IT INTO THE BACK,” he explained, pressing the humming blades against the very bottom of her exposed neck.
Marin shivered as the metal teeth bit into the hair at her nape, shaving the skin completely bare. “SO NOW THE SHORT PART MOVES UPWARD?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly with excitement.
“SNIP! SNIP!” The shears returned, slicing through the hair just above the buzzed undercut. “THERE GOES ANOTHER LAYER…” she observed, watching the golden tufts pile up on the cape.
“IT’S STARTING TO LOOK INTENTIONAL,” the barber noted, texturizing the back of her head.
“THAT MEANS IT LOOKED UNINTENTIONAL BEFORE?” Marin laughed. She reached a hand back, her fingers brushing against the freshly shaved stubble at her nape, then up into the soft, layered pixie cuts above it. “THE WHOLE BACK IS SHORT NOW…”. Her eyes met mine in the mirror, wide and electrified. “OKAY. THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING”.
The barber moved to the side of her head, pinning up the top section. He ran the clippers aggressively up the side of her head, buzzing it down to the skin.
“MY EAR SUDDENLY FEELS VERY EXPOSED,” she noted, her breath catching as she watched her sideburn vanish.
SNIP! The top layer fell over the buzzed side, creating a sharp, edgy contrast.
“HOW DOES THE SHORT SIDE FEEL?” I asked, watching the intense vulnerability in her posture.
“TERRIFYING,” she breathed, staring at her shaved temple. “ALSO… KIND OF AMAZING. DO THE OTHER SIDE”.
The clippers roared again, buzzing away the hair on the left side of her head to match.
“BOTH SIDES ARE GONE. ONLY THE TOP IS LEFT,” the barber announced. He unpinned the final, long section of hair that flopped heavily over her forehead, reaching past her eyes.
“THAT’S THE VERY LAST LONG PIECE, RIGHT?” she asked, staring at the remnant of her former self.
“LAST ONE,” the barber confirmed, pulling it straight up and shearing it down to a few inches.
She ran her hands violently through the short, texturized crop on top of her head. It was completely disheveled, messy, and incredibly chic. “THIS IS THE LAST OF THE BOB, ISN’T IT?”.
“YEAH. ONCE THAT GOES, IT’S OFFICIALLY A PIXIE,” I nodded.
Marin stared at herself, mesmerized by the sharp, boyish cut framing her delicate, hyper-feminine features. “WHY DOES THIS ACTUALLY SUIT ME SO WELL?” she asked, genuinely shocked.
“YOUR FACE ISN’T HIDING ANYMORE,” I told her honestly. The haircut drew all the attention to her huge pink eyes and the sharp curve of her jawline.
She blushed violently. “CAREFUL. COMPLIMENTS MAKE ME RECKLESS,” she warned, a wild glint in her eye.
She reached up, burying her fingers in the short, choppy top layer. “THEN DON’T MAKE IT BORING. MAKE IT CUTE”. She rubbed the closely shaven sides. “IT’S STILL RIDICULOUSLY SOFT…”.
I watched her touch the buzzed sides, realizing exactly what she was thinking. “YOU’RE ALREADY ALMOST MATCHING ME. SAME GUARD. SAME TEXTURE,” I pointed out.
She froze, looking at the clippers resting on the counter. “…SAME GUARD?”.
“SAME GUARD. YOU’RE USING MY OWN ARGUMENT AGAINST ME,” I laughed, realizing she was actually contemplating taking it all off.
The fetishistic thrill of the moment peaked. The sheer, terrifying vulnerability of completely erasing her crowning glory. She looked at my buzzed head, then at her own reflection.
“OKAY. MATCH US,” she ordered, her voice completely steady.
“SAME LENGTH AS HIS?” the barber clarified, raising his eyebrows.
“EXACTLY THE SAME,” Marin confirmed.
CLICK! BZZZZZZZ! The clippers roared to life. The barber didn’t hesitate. He drove the clippers straight down the middle of her cute, texturized pixie. The blonde hair dissolved into nothing but peach fuzz.
“OH!” Marin gasped, a violent jolt of shock going through her shoulders as she felt the steel blades directly against her bare scalp.
“REGRETTING IT?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
“NOT YET,” she lied, her eyes glued to the mirror. “ASK ME AFTER THE NEXT SECTION”.
BZZZT! Another swathe of blonde hair vanished, leaving a pale, fuzzy strip of bare skin.
“IT FEELS COLDER EVERY TIME ANOTHER SECTION GOES,” she shivered, rubbing her arms as the clippers methodically erased her pixie cut. The floor was absolutely covered in a thick blanket of her hair.
When the barber finished the first half, she reached up, pressing her palm flat against the buzzed stubble. “THIS LOOKS SO STRANGE… I CAN’T STOP TOUCHING IT!” she squealed, rubbing the velvety texture against the grain. “IT MEANS MY HEAD FEELS LIKE A PLUSH TOY”.
“THAT MEANS YOU LIKE IT. KEEP GOING,” I encouraged, captivated by her bravery.
BZZZZZZZ! “ONCE THAT SIDE GOES, ONLY THE TOP WILL BE LEFT,” the barber warned, lining up the clippers on the remaining side.
“STILL READY?”.
“DO IT,” she commanded, closing her eyes as the vibration overtook her senses.
“LAST SECTION,” the barber announced, positioning the clippers over the very front of her hairline.
“OKAY, THAT FEELS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. THAT’S MY FINAL CHANCE TO RUN, RIGHT?” she joked nervously.
“I’LL HOLD THE DOOR OPEN,” I laughed.
“TOO LATE. BUZZ IT”.
BZZZZZZZ! The final pass of the clippers swept away the last remnants of her hair. It was gone. All of it. The incredibly heavy, waist-length, pink-tipped mane that I had brushed just hours ago was completely eradicated.
“OH MY GOSH…” she breathed, staring at the near-bald girl in the mirror. She ran both hands vigorously over her fuzzy scalp, completely overwhelmed by the sensory shock of the plush, velvety texture.
“NOW WE REALLY MATCH!” I said, rubbing my own buzzed head.
“YOU ACTUALLY DID IT,” I marveled.
She stood up from the chair, shedding the black cape. The visual impact was stunning—her school uniform, her delicate makeup, and a severe, ultra-short buzzcut. She looked incredibly punk, beautiful, and dangerously bold.
“AND I HAVE NO REGRETS,” she grinned, her confidence entirely unshakeable. “COME ON!”.
We paid the barber, stepping out into the warm afternoon air. The breeze hitting our freshly shorn heads was a shared, intimate shock. As we walked down the busy street, I noticed the double-takes from pedestrians.
“EVERYONE’S STARING,” I whispered.
Marin just threw her arm around my shoulder, totally unbothered, her fuzzy head rubbing against mine. “WE LOOK AWESOME,” she declared proudly.
“THANK YOU! SEE YOU AGAIN!” the barber called out from the door.
“GOOD,” Marin laughed, turning to look at me with her massive pink eyes. “NEXT DATE, NO BARBERSHOPS”.
I smiled, feeling the prickle of my own buzzcut. “NO PROMISES”.
