I appreciate the the inclination toward charity and caution. But whomever is posting as JimB has made a habit of plagiarizing old stories and claiming them under their copyright. I think at this point, if they post a story the smart bet is that it’s stolen from an older site. Some of the stories they post were written by the original JimB*, but many of them were written by different authors on the old archives.

In this particular case, “Sarah’s unexpected trip to the barbershop” was written by Shavedgurl in 2003, despite JimB labeling it “By JimB ©opyright October 2018”

The blogspot post is also plagiarizing the original author.

At this point, I mostly try to ignore their posts. But it does irk me that they’re allowed to continue posting after repeated incidents of plagiarism spanning several years. I guess the brightside, is that once you’ve identified a plagiarist, it’s pretty easy to just ignore any posts by that username.

*I suspect the current JimB is a different person than the original JimB. It seems odd (and highly disrespectful) for somebody who wrote dozens of stories decades ago to suddenly start plagiarizing other peoples’ stories. But I could be wrong.

“A Match Made in Heaven” (Original author: Scissor Fan):

(I had to create tinyurls versions of the webarchive links for the posts to appear here)

(I had trouble this time too. The solution was to delete “https” from the beginning of the links.)

Here’s the link to HaircutStories’s DA gallery: http://www.deviantart.com/haircutstories/gallery

Edgy Barbershop (there’s five parts, so I’ll just link to the ones also posted here):

Here’s the very recent DeviantArt account that reposted a copy of Eliza’s Haircut part 2: http://www.deviantart.com/jennymilleri3

Apologies for not posting the links in the first message–I had some trouble in the past getting forum posts with links to actually post. Hopefully this works.

Some of the stories in question (“Eliza’s Haircut” and “The Edgy Barbershop”) were written by HaircutStories on DeviantArt circa 2019 (and are still on his page), and have subsequently been posted here by “JennyMiller” (with the accompanying Patreon link) and to a very recent DeviantArt profile JennyMiller13. So I suspect this is not only an instance of trying to monetize via this site, but also plagiarizing someone else’s work.

Yeah, “Sandy’s New Cut” which they posted recently is by CrystieV on deviantart. Another story they posted a month or so ago–The Royal Barbershop– is from the old (pre-2004) Story Archive, where JimB used to post… but this particular story was by ClipperOne, not JimB. My suspicion, also voiced by someone in the previous thread, is that someone other than the original JimB is using “JimB” as their handle. I certainly don’t know that, but I find that explanation preferable to believing that someone who contributed dozens of stories to both of the prior story archives would decide to treat other authors with this degree of disrespect.

Plagiarism is obviously bad, but I generally just ignore the authors who mostly post spam-like stories, and pay attention to the authors who consistently write stories I enjoy (e.g. FizzyC and Ginger Herten’s stories I always read). But I guess this pattern of plagiarism just feels especially egregious because whoever they are, they are adding their copyright (with pencilled-in dates, often from the nineties) to stories they clearly didn’t write. So they aren’t just copying, they’re explicitly claiming ownership.

(Mild annoyance, aside, I find it amusing that this is the sort of thing that motivates me to interact other folk here, rather than just lurk as is my habit. But so it is.)

(Second parenthetical: I tried posting this to the prior thread a few days ago, and that didn’t stick… and then it don’t show up here when I tried to reply a few seconds ago. So if this comment somehow ends up appearing three times… that’s why.)
