ParticipantI strongly agree too. I disregard all AI stories as a matter of course but now there are so many. I have just checked before I posted this and there were 17 on the main page (possibly more if not everyone is being honest). Skipping over them is easy enough but what it means is that a significant number of stories which weren’t written by AI aren’t on the front page and could easily be missed. We desperately need a better way to sort the wheat from the chaff (and to me AI stories are nothing more than chaff).

ParticipantThanks for looking into my query, but that is exactly the problem I was trying to outline (obviously not as clearly as I should have). On the main page oll of the filters work, so it is possible to reorder by clicking the title, author, date, views, likes or comments tabs. If, however, I search for a word (eg ponytail) it is not then possible to reorder the results. In other words, those same tabs don’t work following a preliminary search. I hope that explains the issue.
It was rather remiss of me not to have thanked you last time for all your hard work in running the site. I greatly appreciate it.

ParticipantI think you are right klaatu. I must admit, I had read most of the stories but not the last one.

ParticipantMuch as I agree with what has been said recently about not wanting to regulate the number of posts without good reason, I’m sure that you can’t have helped but notice the sheer number of posts by one author over the last couple of weeks. As I am typing this, 15 of the last 21 posts were by the same author – all very short and (in my opinion) poorly written. To my mind, this sort of activity is very detrimental to the site and I think it will discourage authors who spend a great deal of time and effort into writing their stories from posting them, if they are likely to be overlooked in a sea of dross.
I have no idea why can be done about it but once again, maybe a cap on the number of stories within a particular time frame (just a suggestion but maybe two or three posts a week).

ParticipantMe too. I know that you are up to your neck in it, but it would be an improvement when you get the chance.

ParticipantI couldn’t agree more with you and Jenna (Insatiable). Waynebill has been a nuisance for a long time and I hope that him being banned will be a catalyst for improvement. Nobody expects any contributor to be a budding Shakespeare (I am anything but) but there really has been some awful, ill thought out (or vexatious) stuff posted in recent months. Good riddance!
A word of caution though – unless the internet address of Waynebill is blocked and not just his profile name, he may well resurface under one or more other guises. We all need to be vigilant.
Rules and/or guidelines and maybe help monitoring stories would be invaluable. I, for one, would be willing to help if needed. Many of us love this site and get hours of pleasure from it either by way of contributing stories or by reading others’ work. We need to get rid of this scourge as best we can.

ParticipantThis is an excellent suggestion if it can be done (though I am pretty sure I have seen it done elsewhere). I have often spent ages trying to find a particular story but didn’t know either the title or the name of the author, so I have had to search by using words that I think may have appeared in the story. A search could easily have thrown up 20 or 30 hits and then I needed to work through them to find the one I was looking for.

ParticipantAt best, Waynebill might have taken exception to Jenna pointing out the weaknesses in his writing and reacted (in a rather unnecessary way). Ar worst, he is a nuisance along with several others. That said, Jenna is definitely not the problem. All she has been doing is to try to address a continuing problem – that of incessant, ill thought out and badly written stories. I could’t agree more with AB – I do not wish to lose Jenna’s voice either. The good writers (and I don’t include myself among them) could well be missing out and the site is highly likely to lose visitors if all they see is low quality stories.

ParticipantI would also like to add my thanks for all the hard work. I hope that any comments I have made have been taken in a positive light – like the others here I just want the site to be as welcoming as it can be. When faced with a large number of average stories by the same authors on the front page readers could easily miss (or worse still, be put off trying to find) some real gems.

ParticipantHSN admin haven’t followed up, so it may be hypothetical but I agree with Insatiable entirely. All I would need is basic ground rules (if any) i.e. any topics that HSN do NOT want to see in stories. Other than that I would like to think that my judgment is fair – even when I don’t like something. My offer to help is still there.

ParticipantFor what it is worth I agree with Insatiable/Jenna’s comments about quality control – it is a matter for HSN admin to determine. I offered to help months ago but said at the time that I needed his/her criteria to let me decide which stories should be permitted or declined.
The quality of writing is a separate matter – some of you are excellent writers and others are complete beginners (I would like to think I am between the two) and should be encouraged even if the stories are poor. I have to agree with Jenna that recently there has been a proliferation of stories submitted by the same authors (at the time I have written this message, one author has submitted four stories and two others have three entries each). I am not commenting on the quality of those stories just the sheer number of such stories. Many such stories are very average or poor. The site desperately needs a delay mechanism.

ParticipantI would be happy to help out occasionally as I would to vet stories in the first place. Vetting is more complicated in that it would depend on the website’s criteria for acceptance or refusal but ‘critique’ involving a basic spell and grammar check wouldn’t be too onerous (other than for those authors who insist on not using paragraphs)

ParticipantI suspect that ‘clumping’ suggested by Ginger may not be workable because stories go online as soon as they are issued. It would involve a lot of work for admin. I would have thought that the ‘Latest story by…’ suggestion is possible with a bit of IT know how. I still think a delay mechanism to stop multiple stories within a set period might be the best way forward.

ParticipantI agree with Jenna (Insatiable) on this. That said, I wouldn’t want to dissuade less experienced or talented writers from posting their stories (I don’t claim to be any good myself) but I don’t like to see the site being ‘bombarded’ with stories by the same author. I would agree that a limit should be imposed – maybe one a week is a little too restrictive but a limit of two or three should be more than adequate.
